A good lightweight os - Xiaomi Redmi 5A Questions & Answers

Hi , I have a 5a lying around. And I was thinking of installing a good lightweight os and giving it to my grandpa. He mostly uses a phone for calls and a little youtube. Can you guys suggest me any good lightweight or "go" version of any roms.

So i'm not the only one who are searching a MIUI alternative.
I've made a search on the web but nothing for the moment.
Same here, found, that MIUI isn't my cup of coffee...
So we will see...
Sent from my HM 1SW using XDA Free mobile app
The problem is the MIUI community.
They're sweet but... we can't talk about anything else except MIUI so it will be good if we can regroup a few users here to maybe interest some devs.
PS : I'm sorry for my poor english.
Also interested in this, I have got no developing experience, but I am willing to beta test, who knows maybe one day ill teach myself and cook a rom for it.

Same. But if I can do anything to help I'll do my best.
As far as I have been able to find out, no sources are out = no AOSP roms for us, unless we write everything from scratch
MIUI Developers never release sources code = No custom rom, that's reason why we don't have MIUI custom on XDA.
-XDA has most skilled developers.
-If you take closer look MIUI it combines all Samsung IOS HTC and some custom Mods from XDA developers into one without permissions. It's Chinese Way, i have no comment on this.
Really exist one Cyanogenmod on Xiaomi Mi2/Mi2S... http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=16834&highlight=cyanogenmod
But in Redmi 1S right now nothing of nothing ...
facepalm for me... Miui sucks everywhere....
We just need to wait a bit...
And I guess this Cyanogen can't be used on 1S because of Qualcomm processor...
Can u guys help?
IMO, Xiaomi has pretty good hardware packed inside, but this same happened when i thought of buying Mi 3.
But i have 1 question though. I am planning to by REDMI 1S for my dad, can u help me to choose or reject this phone?
PS - He's a total novice when it comes to smartphones. request you to give your opinion accordingly.
Hi,
The MIUI interface is really easy to use.
The only negative point is the 4G unsupported in the Redmi 1S.
So I guess you can buy it, it's a really good product for the price.
Someone is working on CM11 for our Redmi 1s!!!

I hope it will be out soon :cyclops:

Hi guys, i wanna ask. I'm planning to buy this phone in near months when it launches in my country. However, despite all the great stuff found on this phone - like its processor, GPU, sharp display, amazing cameras, etc - there are many complaints about its battery life and gaming performance - with games like Asphalt 8 running laggy in full graphics. I know that the custom ROM of stock Android for this phone hasn't come out yet until new given that it's a new phone, but i wanna know is there any way to improve its battery life and gaming performance.
I heard that MIUI of this phone consumes a lot of RAM and only leaves around 200MB of RAM. Does this phone allow users to deactivate the pre-loaded apps in order to free some RAM, thus making its battery last longer and performance much faster especially for gaming?
Please, answer my question guys. I'm in desperate for answers here because Xiaomi is about to launch its phones in my country soon and i don't want to be left behind in purchasing this phone given Xiaomi's flash sales.

Thanks for your reply dude. Hopefully, when this phone receives the MIUI 6, it will improve its performance and battery life. This phone is about to arrive in the next few weeks in my country soon. Hopefully, i manage to buy it because the price of this phone at other retailers is just insane!!

Yes, i know that. But i heard that even moto e or moto g can last about 6 hours for intensive gaming without resting the screen. So i think xiaomi should be similar in term of battery life wite moto phones given their similar specs.

What should I know before buying this device?

Hi all, I do not really care about 4G.
This might be my next phone so I'd like what is intersting to know when you use the phone.
I already know about the not so good camera, the noise when recording and the youtube sound bug. Have the owners on reddit something else to prevent me about?
I am also considering Huawei Nova (not plus) and Redmi Note 4x. If someone have tested many of those 3 devices and can give me advice.
Thanks in advance

Hi, the sound sync bug is barely noticeable on my unit, the delay is minimal, I have the UK version with S056 stock rom out of the box. The 4/64 version of Redmi Note 4X is still not available and the Nova is only 5" with significantly smaller battery and also only 3gb ram. I have the 4/32 version of P2a42 and I can't be more happy with the device. The build quality is superb, the display is gorgeous, the rom is 99% stock Android 6.0.1, the cpu is super snappy, only the high end games like NFS No Limits, Modern Combat 5 and GTA are not running smooth on full details. And here comes the battery, the battery life is amazing. Right now I'm on 54%, this is my 3rd day on a single charge and I already have 6h25m screen on time with 2h of heavy online gaming with games like NFS No limits, 5v5 moba games like Mobile Legends, Heroes Evolved and so on. The math shows that I'll end up with more than 12h SOT and using the phone without charging for a full 4 days, if no gaming and only 2-3 usage 14-15h SOT are not a problem for this phone.
I highly recommend it and currently for me Lenovo P2 is the best balanced phone between performance, battery, build quality and reliability under $300.

i dont know as of now, but i will reply to this after 14 days
i am going to Install TWRP , on road to unlocking Bootloader :silly:

Looking for ROM to install.

I've had the Pixel C for over a year and have not really used it much lately. I had at one point installed RemixOS but had issues with the window function (windows would always be stuck to edge of screen and be unmovable) and have since returned back to stock.
I'm looking to utilize the tablet again as I did pay good money for it NOT to be a sitting dust collector. I just wanted input from the community on the different ROMs available. I mainly used the tablet for productivity and occasional gaming/streaming.
I like lineage OS.
It is unofficial still but close to stock with small footprint and is rock solid in performance.

Thanks for your input I'll give Lineage a try. Do you happen to have experience with the Resurrection OS by any chance?

I do not.
I stuck with LineageOS because it is the old cyanogenmod team.
If you were to be on the stable OS which is v14 or Nougat i think you get pretty regular never fail updates.
I went with the unoffical LineageOS v15 as it is based on Oreo.
A little more cumbersome in performing updates as it isn't supported by Lineage proper just yet, but rock solid otherwise
My pixel C is by far the least modified of all my devices and is pretty vanilla excapt for being rooted.
I use Dirty Unicorns. Is the only rom that seems more responsive than stock
Any Chrome OS ROM for the Pixel C? Now that Acer et al have detachable Chrome tablets this should work for the Pixel C, too.

Still a good buy?

Hi guys, I want you to ask if this tablet is still a good buy? I need it for drawing and can get a good one for 150 Euros. I know that there are no more updates, but it seems that some 7.1 Roms work good.
So...what do you say?

Had it for close to 4 years now, and still find it difficult to get an upgrade. Tab S3 just doesn't seem worth the extra money - maybe S4 will.
The software is lollipop, but very functional and quite smooth after some debloating.
If it's a WiFi only model, there's a marshmallow touchwiz based rom by bonuzz which is highly rated.

Thank you for your answer from the specs, I think it should do the job for some drawings. And good to know that the software available doesn't really suck thanks
You won't find anything better below 200 or better 300€, especially with a digitizer, and 4G is also not too common in tablets. And there are current LOS and RR roms good enough to serve as daily driver. Seems still not to be an issue that the SoC is only 32bits.
It's a good device, yeah, but since officially it got stuck on Android L, it's definitely started to lose support in software on the Play Store. Seems developers are defaulting to Android 6.0 as the compatibility watershed now. However, if you're OK with aftermarket ROMs, that's not a problem.

Could be possible to bring a oxygen ROM to our devices?

What do you think about this idea?
If it is possible I would like to request to any dev to bring us this rom.
Peace:good:
Oxygen is honestly the worst stock ROM I ever used on any phone by an extremely wide margin. Some software engineers in China and India analyzed the code in the Oxygen version of Oreo and found that much of the code was actually Android Nougat. They also said the overall coding in Oxygen was sloppy and amateurish. Almost everybody who buys a One Plus phone in North America runs a custom ROM on it. The writer responsible for the XDA review of the One Plus 5 that claimed Oxygen was like stock android but better switched his own phone to LOS.
I can't think of a good reason to use Oxygen on a One Plus phone let alone port it to another phone brand.
What is there about Oxygen that you would like to see on this phone? Clearly I'm missing something.

I used on my old zuk z2 and the rom has very good performance.
That's the reason
After Marshmallow One Plus fired the programmers in Europe that were responsible for Oxygen and moved the coding to the Hydrogen programming team in China to save money and Oxygen has gotten progressively worse and more unstable ever since. One Plus sells almost no phones in China so there was never a reason for the Hydrogen OS team to exist in the first place except to take over Oxygen after the European programmers had created a stable ROM base.
If you were running an Oxygen custom ROM on a non One Plus phone then I don't really know what you were running but it likely just looked like Oxygen. I had a One Plus 5 that ran official Oxygen and the coding was complete amateur hour compared to MIUI. Oxygen updates regularly broke third party apps. A clean install of every update was necessary to avoid excessive battery drain. On top of that the coding in Oxygen was so sloppy and inept that the only way you could use TWRP safely was to keep the memory on your phone permanently decrypted.
If you like the style of Oxygen there are some Oxygen inspired themes for MIUI but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an actual ROM.

You might get your wish but usually custom ROMs are AOSP/LOS/CAF based. If you have a One Plus device there will also be a couple Oxygen based custom ROMs and if you own a Xiaomi device there will be a couple MIUI based custom ROMs. AOSP code is open source but Oxygen and MIUI code is not so creating a custom ROM based on Oxygen for a non OnePlus phone would be very difficult. I still think you were using an AOSP ROM that was designed to look like Oxygen but I could be wrong. I didn't mean to come off rude but One Plus is a sore point with me because I had a terrible experience with them--phone build quality, software, customer service, warranty service--everything about One Plus was bad so the hype that surrounds their phones (at least in the United States where I live) tends to make me angry. But I didn't mean to take it out on you so I apologize .
Not Impossible
Its dificult not Impossible,i haverá a mi mix 2s and os runing a 9.0.4 version of oneplus 6, and its runing very good
