Turn off 5G to save battery? - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

Does anyone know if the Cellular Settings will have an option to turn off the 5G radio to save battery life? Not sure the config of Samsungs setup but 5G won't be in my area until the S22 lol.
Chris

I expect there will. The previous models have the option for 2G/3G (as well as 2G only) if you want to disable the faster mode. I am with you. I live in the UK but while I occasionally travel to cities that are getting 5G soon (like London) where I live won't be covered for at least a year.

I'm not finding a way to do it

There is probably an advanced option you can access via the dialer app. I believe it allows you to turn off certain frequencies. Not sure if that's only on rooted phones though

Yes
It's under mobile network setting
5G/LTE/3G/2G
LTE/3G/2G
LTE/3G
2G only

I don't have a Mobile Network Settings option on my S20.

I don't have the option to disable 5G on a US unlocked S20 either. Not good because it's apparently causing GPS issues right now.

You have to dig a lil in settings go into connections, then mobile networks then network mode and put it on the one without 5g

Not having any luck on a AT&T variant finding the 5G disable setting... although I am getting 7hrs 15 mins screen ontime which is impressive (standard S20, no Plus or Ultra)

Lots of battery apps measure SOT. I use GSam Battery Monitor. Better Battery Stats and AccuBattery are also good.

I am in the netherlands, on a S20 with latest firmware.
And there is indeed an option to turn on or off for 5G.
Pictures attached.
Greetz...

Possible solution here.

Good day.
I had a similar problem in my old Sony Phone, and i solved the problem with an play store app, that is only an shortcut to an internal hidden android menu, to force select a 2g/3g/4g or 5g band.
Here is the link and screenshot in my Note10.

Uploaded a screen grab to my Google Drive, if you're still curious on how to find the option to disable 5G. I have a factory unlocked US Galaxy S20.

Doesn't disabling 5g make your mobile data slower even if not in a 5g area and not using 5g?im only in 4g areas but when I change the settings to receive only 4g 3g 2g seems slower than if in 5g 4g 3g 2g?

If you are not in a 5G area, the 5G radio has no signal to capture, so enabling 5G has no benefit. You can prove this to yourself using a download speed test app.

This depends on the carrier. Some carriers allow users to switch between 5G/LTE/3G/2G, and some don't. Verizon is notorious for restricting user options, even on Verizon-branded devices.

Turn off LTE? [SOLUTION]

I have tried several different APN's and none give me data. AT&T has eliminated the GSM toggle menu under mobile networks. It should have:
GSM/HSPA/LTE
GSM Only
HSPA Only
GSM/HSPA auto
How can we turn off LTE? and use only "4G" (HSPA+) My phone sits in my desk drawer all day at work and I'd rather not have it on LTE killing the battery. I'd also rather NOT turn off mobile data as then I can't receive e-mails or picture messages.
AT&T really is doing more harm than good by eliminating the GSM toggle menue under mobile networks.
SOLUTION:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect.

It's very strange that they would remove it from the Note II but allow it for the iPhone 5
I look forward to hearing the answer to this as well. Being forced to kill my battery if I'm not in an LTE area would piss me off.
just run juice defender. It will shut off your lte when your phone is locked and turn network data back up when you unlock the screen. It improves my battery by 1.6x-1.8x on my note 1. havent installed it on my note 2 yet, maybe after i see how the battery life is as is.

The iSheep wouldn't quit bugging Apple if they didn't include an LTE toggle. But AT&T can't touch the iOS software on the iPhone 5, which is probably why its on there.

So I guess we can conclude that att are real pricks and would rather sacrifice our battery life in the hope that LTE always being on will take some of the pressure off their 3G network
Even though I used LTE all day today, it really didn't affect my battery life. I know these chips are not first generation LTE chips and much more battery efficient.
I know this sounds contradicting but if I wanted HSPA+ only I could have very well purchased the international version.
I am hoping that every developer adds the option in their roms.s

att has forced this on the gs3 and the first note as well the only way to really get it off is to run a canadian base rom.
If you download "Phone Info" from the Play store, under device information, you should be able to choose between the modes and bypass ATT's bs.

This was taken from a Galaxy S III forum so they didn't take in the Note's form factor obviously. You just have to remove the sim, power on the phone, and then select your preferred network, and then power off, and pop the battery in.
It works though, I get my normal strong HSPA+ signal with NO LTE showing up.

Anyone has VoLTE on EE or Three UK?

Yes, I can confirm that VoLTE and WiFi calling doesn't work on EE.
On Three you can probably use their app for VoLTE and WiFi calling (if you are not rooted).
Hi there. I can connect to the 800MHz LTE on the Three network, however there is no option for me to use native VoLTE or VoLTE via their InTouch app at all.
I doubt we'll see VoLTE natively on this device, but there may be a chance that a future update to inTouch would let it work there, but damn I hate their app.

You can use this app to see your signal type: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite
Or use the dialer and use *#*#4636#*#* to view additional signal information.
It's somewhat of a guessing game also. I only get LTE signal here if its 800MHz as they recently rolled it out.
I have LTE on Three, but not VoLTE.
I also hate their awful app.

I'm trying to get VoLTE working with 3 on my OP3 too. From what I can tell, we need the APN settings for the 3 IMS APN. Damned if I can find these listed anywhere though. If somebody has an official 3 phone with working VoLTE then we can copy it off there.
I'm wondering if the Enhanced 4G voice option will show in settings when a compatible APN is detected? Other people seem to have VoLTE working on their OP3 (looking at posts on xda), but I'm not sure if they're using the stock rom or not.
The issue is that EE/Three really have no incentive to support the OP3 because they don't sell it.
Same goes for all UK networks none of them will enable VoLTE on the OnePlus 3
Just want to bump this thread as 3G coverage is rubbish around my home area. For some reason I only get 4G and am not able to get 3G. I have to use the Three In touch app to even receive calls

How do you get VoLTE on that? According to gsmarena it doesn't support band 20, and as far as I know Three only has VoLTE on band 20? It would be interesting if you could let me know if a) Three are now running VoLTE on band 3 too, or b) It actually does support band 20. Here's the gsmarena page: http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_5-6948.php
Thanks!
I've no idea. We were just sat in a pub and she asked me what the VoLTE in the status bar meant. Sure enough the icon was there and she gets it quite often
If you're on EE you probably won't get VoLTE; they're having trouble supporting the S7 so the OnePlus 3 is pretty much a lost cause. I know that kinda sucks for you guys on the better performing network
Three are more likely to; they support a lot more phones on VoLTE and are generally a lot more Android friendly than EE (EE always release Android updates very late, and everything is given to iPhones first).
But I'm obviously just guessing here, until VoLTE is more mature in the UK it's likely VoLTE support will be the complete mess it is now with only major phones getting it.
Hope that helped

why would you want 3g if you can get 4g ?
Last time I checked with Three they told me that only some phones approved/sold by them support VoLTE.
A few months ago they whitelisted the Oneplus 2 to use VoLTE though their app. The Oneplus 3 is not supported yet (not sure if it will be in the future).
Sorry. If you don't know voLTE (on the three network) only works on 800mhz, which only works on 3 carrier bought phones. 3G is the only way you can call apart from that, and as I already said, my area does not have 3G coverage.

I'm having the issue here. Determined it only flashes to 4G+ when there is active data downloading. Otherwise it sits at LTE. US/AT&T here. Was considering going to T-Mobile to put a SIM in the 2nd tray and see if it does it there too, because I was thinking it was just an APN setting.
An easy way to tell is open YouTube and playback a video off of cellular..indicator will stick on 4G+. Alternatively, run a Speed Test, when downloading it will flash back and forth rapidly, however when doing the upload test it will stay on LTE.
I always thought 4G+ was the same as HSDPA+/HSUPA+ which is nowhere near as fast as LTE. Does anyone having the issue have a recent LTE phone they can swap back into and copmare speed tests?
Edit - typos.

4G is LTE. Not sure what 4G+ is. On LTE when it works I can get around 100 down.
Hmm, no 4G and LTE are different, in the US at least. 4G was marketed before LTE came about, you can see proof of this on an iPhone 4S, which did not have LTE radios but did label HSDPA+ connections as 4G. So you can thank Apple for the marketing confusion. However, upon researching this issue it seems 4G+ (with the plus, not just 4G) is the technical equivalent to LTE. It is just used in different countries, such as Singapore.
Regardless, the issue seems to have gone away after coming to work and being in different AT&T towers. I'm guessing it was just a graphical bug.
In Europe 4g and Lte is the same but the 4g+ is the new faster net

Pretty certain the one plus when using carrier aggregation shows the 4G+ and 4g when on HSDPA. Confusing for certain but when I've noticed it that's been the case (as much as I can tell without field test)

Yes that's exactly what mine is doing, however today it does it sometimes and other times it remains showing LTE when downloading data. I noticed when it remains as LTE, the up/down indicators in the pull-down settings don't show up, which leads me to believe even more that the LTE/4G+ toggling is just a visual bug, as they are technically the same network connection.
I took contact with the Oneplus support about this problem. They told me to send them a log with a hidden menu ( call the *#800#). He sent the log to the development team, I will tell you if I have news

No such luck. You're most likely seeing 5Ge (with a little 'e' at the end), which is just a marketing gimmick for slightly improved 4G LTE. For example, see https://9to5google.com/2020/05/20/att-5ge-android-icon/.
You won't have real 5G unless you have a get a real (and undoubtedly) expensive 5G phone plan from AT&T.

Wow, love the Cell Mapper app. Am I correct that when you are on the Map setting it shows which direction and area is covered by each cell tower? Example: 2 towers next to each other but one is shaded to the west/northwest and the other is to the East/Northeast ...
And I love how it shows which Bands are supported by each Cell Site ...
Very cool app thanks for suggesting!!

Question Samsung F62 slow mobile internet speed

Hello, So mobile internet (airtel 4g) is very very slow in this phone. But with the use of netmonster app by toggling network bands, I'm able to get atleast some speed out of my internet. I thought issue would be absence of carrier aggregation software support by samsung in the phone even though it has Note 10 chip & 8x bands. But NO, my old phone Oppo Reno 2Z also doesn't have carrier aggregation but it's mobile internet speed is pretty fast, even while sharing data as tethering Hotspot for PC its pretty fast with the same airtel 4g network.
I'm totally fedup with this and only option now is to just sell the phone, but i don't want to do that right now. Are there any fixes for this issue or its the same issue with every F62? Any chance of possible fix in future?
Thank you.

this is the main bug in our one ui 3.1 build. CA is not yet implemented in this device as you already know. as u said, use netmotster app and test several bands via speed testing. even I faced network issues in this device, but netmotster and flashing the new firmware solved my issue.

Idl why you want to?. Even if it gets CA it would drain battery so devs haven't implemented yet. Asaig
