I have tried several different APN's and none give me data. AT&T has eliminated the GSM toggle menu under mobile networks. It should have:
GSM/HSPA/LTE
GSM Only
HSPA Only
GSM/HSPA auto
How can we turn off LTE? and use only "4G" (HSPA+) My phone sits in my desk drawer all day at work and I'd rather not have it on LTE killing the battery. I'd also rather NOT turn off mobile data as then I can't receive e-mails or picture messages.
AT&T really is doing more harm than good by eliminating the GSM toggle menue under mobile networks.
SOLUTION:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect.

It's very strange that they would remove it from the Note II but allow it for the iPhone 5
I look forward to hearing the answer to this as well. Being forced to kill my battery if I'm not in an LTE area would piss me off.
just run juice defender. It will shut off your lte when your phone is locked and turn network data back up when you unlock the screen. It improves my battery by 1.6x-1.8x on my note 1. havent installed it on my note 2 yet, maybe after i see how the battery life is as is.

The iSheep wouldn't quit bugging Apple if they didn't include an LTE toggle. But AT&T can't touch the iOS software on the iPhone 5, which is probably why its on there.

This isn't really a solution. We need a toggle or a valid APN.

I agree. Seems like a bad option rather than a simple toggle or APN.
I take it the Note II for Sprint doesn't have this issue?

The claim above regarding battery life doesn't help other people much without scientific testing. Battery claims need details on what was done and for how long, screenshots, screen-on battery time, and LTE signal strength.

So I guess we can conclude that att are real pricks and would rather sacrifice our battery life in the hope that LTE always being on will take some of the pressure off their 3G network
Even though I used LTE all day today, it really didn't affect my battery life. I know these chips are not first generation LTE chips and much more battery efficient.
I know this sounds contradicting but if I wanted HSPA+ only I could have very well purchased the international version.
I am hoping that every developer adds the option in their roms.s

Hopefully Telus Rom can be used in are toys , That should provide us setting....not sure how modem would fly though
att has forced this on the gs3 and the first note as well the only way to really get it off is to run a canadian base rom.
If you download "Phone Info" from the Play store, under device information, you should be able to choose between the modes and bypass ATT's bs.

This was taken from a Galaxy S III forum so they didn't take in the Note's form factor obviously. You just have to remove the sim, power on the phone, and then select your preferred network, and then power off, and pop the battery in.
It works though, I get my normal strong HSPA+ signal with NO LTE showing up.

Hi Guys,
I have LTE coverage where I am, but phone keeps going to 4G.
Is there any way to force it so it stays on LTE?
I have tried the following app but no luck. Once I select the LTE Only mode it switches to WCDMA Preferred mode some how.
LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt, https://play.google.com/store/search?q=lte+on+off
Any way, any idea any one??
Thanks
If it keeps dropping back to 4G then the LTE service probably isn't strong enough where you are. You can't just force it on either. That's like forcing any service at all in the middle of the ocean.

Previous poster is right.
But u can play around. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, reboot. Flash different ROMs, usually one Stock based, another AOKP - I believe modems are vastly different there.
The only way to fix this is make a new APN there's a post on skyrocket fourms that shows you how

I have done forcing on other devices such as Galaxy Nexus, currently using Sierra 754S that has feature where you can force it to stay on LTE, and it stays put.. Only problem it gets WICKED HOT if I pump a lot of data
Assuming you subscribed with your provider for LTE-service, then definitely it's because your LTE coverage is not great.
If you've never seen your phone connect to LTE before, I suggest you contact your provider and make sure you are on their LTE-network.
LTE-device doesn't automatically mean you're getting LTE service. I've seen people make that incorrect assumption.
Well, all you really need is LTE Sim card for AT&T, it works awesome ... as I said it works great with Sierra 754S air card.
So any device that has LTE capability it works perfect with that.

No voice coverage on Lte so the phone still needs hspa to make and Recieve calls and text messages. Until all the voice over Lte and hand off standards are in place Lte is a data only feature.
On a data stick it makes sense to allow an Lte only mode but on a phone it would not be a good idea.

Not sure if this was posted already but looking through the menus I found how to easily disable LTE. It's not around here and I read having it enabled eats battery. My HSPA speeds are 5-10 megs which is more than enough for what I do.
Anyway:
Settings
Connections Tab
More Networks
Mobile Networks
Network Mode
Choose GSM/WCDMA (auto connect). 2nd one from the top.
It seems this device sucks up battery at twice the rate of my former Note 2. Maybe this will help.

It just says 4G when you have LTE on the Galaxy S4. At least for Sprint anyway. I use Cyanogenmod so mine does say LTE. For AT&T I know for a fact that it says LTE on the top right of the 4G icon.

I think some people are too obsessed with this notion of battery life. Sure, LTE might degrade it a little, but is it really worth disabling completely? I'm sure I wouldn't, I want the full features of a phone, whether that is data speeds or other features. Unless you don't have a LTE plan, then I understand completely.

I think that's backwards move there! Because I love my LTE speeds I get, almost faster than some WiFi at home!!
If you don't want lte speeds, then don't get a LTE PHONE!
And another thing if your really concerned about battery life then purchase a extended battery! They start out at 6200 mAh, 6500, 7600, 9300. Don't think they'll have to worry about battery life with one of those!
And tons of external back up batteries also. I have a16,000 mAh backup battery

Often time, there is a "4G" signal nearby but for 10 seconds I switch between Edge and HSPA I loose data connectivity.

Hey guys, Not sure if this is normal or not, but in my house I get 1 bar signal with the phone bare and laying on the table. If I put my case on it (Spigen Slim Armor View) it loses that one bar. (without case I get 101-DBm, with the case it jumps to 109-DBm or so. I thought it was the case at first but than I remembered the "death grip" so I put my hands on both sides of the phone while it was laying on the table and it lost the bar from my hands covering the sides.
The case i have can be taken apart into three pieces. I stripped it down to JUST the TPU part and put that on the phone, and it still loses it just with the TPU part of the case on it. Originally I figured I'd just get a different case to use at home where I have low signal but it seems I can't even use a regular TPU case without it dropping the signal...
Anyone else in low services area's experiencing the same?
(Note: I have a T-mobile S4, but its unlocked and running on AT&T's network. Not sure if that matters but I figured since the phone itself is T-mobile I'd post here)

Yeah Wifi calling is cool but I don't make many phone calls anyway, the only problem is the 1 bar of signal is enough to receive text messages. If I have my case on and it loses that 1 bar, I get text messages about 45 minutes after they're sent to me. Which is really annoying since I hate leaving my phone bare in order to get my texts on time... Guess that's the price I pay from going to AT&T from Verizon network.
Their coverage map shows "Good" at my address (Which it is, OUTSIDE) but inside any building its garbage.

I see, however inside my house I don't get LTE (well it goes in and out, but the speeds are like 1mb down and 0.50 up when it does connect) So should I continue to keep it on automatic at home? (Data doesn't matter though, I run on Wifi at home, its just signal strength that I need increased so if the LTE/GSM setting is best for better reception I'll keep it on that at home anyway.

All I can say is be patient. I had the same issue for a couple of months where I had to cycle airplane mode (or update PRL) to get LTE then promptly lose it. Disabling bands 41 and 26 helped. But after those two months, LTE works great most of the time without doing any of this.
Sprint is likely working on towers in your area.

Sprint has been "working on towers" in my area for over a year. Every time I go into the Sprint stores to ask when LTE will be here its always the same answer: 'Well they are actually working on upgrading the towers right now, so if you are experiencing issues with data connectivity or slow speeds thats probably why. They expect to have LTE fully up and running in 1-2 months'. And as of today, still no LTE. And 3G speeds that are so slow it wont even register on a speed test.

Click on the link and read the section about 8T8R radios. So basically before Sprint brings LTE to all of its customers they started introducing Spark in select areas. Then also before completing their LTE rollout they will be upgrading the Spark towers. Even after LTE is installed it consistently tests the slowest of all 4 major carriers. And as more people buy phones that are LTE/Spark compatible, it will only get worse.
So yes it is good to be patient. But Sprint's upgrades and improvements are very slow coming so don't hold your breath.
I like it
Lets me know how network is going
Freaking hate Spark. Glad to find this thread... I disabled the two bands and it's MUCH snappier now... Is there any reason I will need to re-enable these bands?
You'll want to reenable those bands unless you want a device that only works on 1/3 of the spectrum that Sprint has in the market. I can see disabling those bands during the upgrade process if you are having difficulty but with a finished product, I can't think of a single reason why you would ever want to disable those bands.

Sorry, this thread is for the LG G2 LS980...
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry but is it really that serious? My question was completely relatable to the topic...

Yeah it's serious, your phone may have a different behavior than the LS980 due to the service provider unique tweak to stock android on your phone. Once the LS980 hidden menus are unlocked using the SPC code, the bands toggle no problem. Maybe that could be your issue, if it's not, that's why I suggested to find a thread related to your phone. Good luck!
