Is this an Android feature or is there something wrong with my 3G?
What happens is that whenever I am using my browser and searching on Google and my data connection shows 3G, when I click something it switches to H. Then, after page load, it changes back to 3G.
It makes me wonder if something is wrong with my 3G, or it is some battery-optimizing done by the phone.
Am I missing something? I did not notice this with my HTC Desire, it stayed on 3G or H until connectivity became worse or better.
perfectly normal,as 3G just being the band you can be called on,but once you start browsing and download stuf, your conection turns into HSPDA(thus the H) this is the data conection integrated in 3G(its faster than actual 3G)
you can see it as a download mode.
H is just a download indicator if you ask me.
thus maybe your HTC was downloading constand or had a lower refresh rate?
the described action you present is pretty common on my nexus S
Yes this is normal behaviour in stock Android.
Great to hear, thanks
Yeah it was constant on my HTC Desire, either on H or 3G. Apps were the same, so I don't think Desire did some background work that Nexus isn't doing.
I like it, thanks!
Every phone I've had from the Nexus One would do this - usually stock roms don't show an "H," only 3G, so you can't tell that it's switching between.
My HTC desire would switch between 3g and h on Orange but if I roamed on to t mobile it would permanently show as H. I guess it can also depend on the network.

You don't want it to stay on H .. it uses heaps more battery. There's also limited capacity on the network to support H connections. If everyone connected in H they would run out. It's meant to be temporary while you need to download a webpage, etc.
Mine is doing this too

I think there's been a thread on this already, but just to reiterate:
This is just a feature of UMTS and HSPA. Using HSPA takes more battery than UMTS or EDGE, so you only want it on when you are actively downloading or uploading data. Otherwise, UMTS serves just fine for background data and syncing.
When you're reading a web page (your example), there's not a lot of data being transfered, and you're sitting on UMTS. As soon as you click a link, it switches to HSPA, pulls down the info, and switches back again.
To my knowledge, stock android shows the difference between 3G and H pretty accurately. Carrier and/or manufacturer customized ROMs often tend to lead towards leaving "H"/"H+"/"4G" in the status bar more than 3G. If you watch your "about phone" > "status" screen, you'll see your phone switches between UMTS and HSPA quite often, even if the interface is preferring to show you "H". I think its mostly a marketing tactic that also reduces customer confusion.
So bottom line, you should be happy it switches to save your battery!
I have this and trust me, it cains battery.
I have never seen H in my Nexus S.
So this is good

That's because the Nexus S is a 3G phone that doesn't have the hardware required to transmit HSPA+ signal.

The Nexus S is HSPA capable. just not HSPA+.
Actually HSPA doesn't use _more_ battery when you're camping. It only uses more battery while transferring, but even thats debatable. Eg 10mb downloaded in 1 minute over HSPA vs 5 minutes on 3G - which uses more battery to complete the task?
What does use extra battery is IF it has to switch to another tower to get you HSPA. However the network is pretty smart at choosing the most efficient thing to do, although it is biased to move people to towers which allow the most number of subscribers to be on the network. For example, if you are in a built up area and there are 3 towers within range, one perhaps right next to you, you may be switched to one further away so that one can service a user on the edge of its signal area. Although this uses more of your battery, it allows both of you to use the network rather than just 1.
Booo. So I just upgraded from a mt4g (the old one) to a GN, and now when I stream Sirius, it cuts out as it switches between H & 3G. I used Wifi today because it was driving me crazy. I wish there was a switch to turn off 4G, not 3G also.
I have tried several different APN's and none give me data. AT&T has eliminated the GSM toggle menu under mobile networks. It should have:
GSM/HSPA/LTE
GSM Only
HSPA Only
GSM/HSPA auto
How can we turn off LTE? and use only "4G" (HSPA+) My phone sits in my desk drawer all day at work and I'd rather not have it on LTE killing the battery. I'd also rather NOT turn off mobile data as then I can't receive e-mails or picture messages.
AT&T really is doing more harm than good by eliminating the GSM toggle menue under mobile networks.
SOLUTION:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect.

It's very strange that they would remove it from the Note II but allow it for the iPhone 5
I look forward to hearing the answer to this as well. Being forced to kill my battery if I'm not in an LTE area would piss me off.
just run juice defender. It will shut off your lte when your phone is locked and turn network data back up when you unlock the screen. It improves my battery by 1.6x-1.8x on my note 1. havent installed it on my note 2 yet, maybe after i see how the battery life is as is.

The iSheep wouldn't quit bugging Apple if they didn't include an LTE toggle. But AT&T can't touch the iOS software on the iPhone 5, which is probably why its on there.

I agree. Seems like a bad option rather than a simple toggle or APN.
I take it the Note II for Sprint doesn't have this issue?

The claim above regarding battery life doesn't help other people much without scientific testing. Battery claims need details on what was done and for how long, screenshots, screen-on battery time, and LTE signal strength.

So I guess we can conclude that att are real pricks and would rather sacrifice our battery life in the hope that LTE always being on will take some of the pressure off their 3G network
Even though I used LTE all day today, it really didn't affect my battery life. I know these chips are not first generation LTE chips and much more battery efficient.
I know this sounds contradicting but if I wanted HSPA+ only I could have very well purchased the international version.
I am hoping that every developer adds the option in their roms.s

Hopefully Telus Rom can be used in are toys , That should provide us setting....not sure how modem would fly though
att has forced this on the gs3 and the first note as well the only way to really get it off is to run a canadian base rom.
If you download "Phone Info" from the Play store, under device information, you should be able to choose between the modes and bypass ATT's bs.

This was taken from a Galaxy S III forum so they didn't take in the Note's form factor obviously. You just have to remove the sim, power on the phone, and then select your preferred network, and then power off, and pop the battery in.
It works though, I get my normal strong HSPA+ signal with NO LTE showing up.
So, when i turn on my packet data, it is switching to edge constantly ... It is set to GSM/WCDMA auto, but im in very good coverage area of my city (downtown) and i notice edge more often than h+ ?
Any one knows reason ?
That will drain your battery when the phone keeps switching 2g and 3g.
I have and problem on my previous Motorola RAZR. I just keep it at wdcma only. Works fine on my previous and current.
But it still switches from time to time from H+ to 3G

Thanks for reply, but... I often go to several parts of my city where coverage is not so great. Then again, in our biggest shopping mall coverage is awful .. So if i just keep it on WDCMA only it would have poor reception there..

Same issue here mate. G Search also starting to show others having similar issues. Do you find you if you hit refresh when in browser it switches 2g 3g or visa versa ? This is the only thing ive found thats consistent also during speedtest net my connection speed does not change significantly while It switches 2g 3g etc. No real antenna issues and in known good 3g area only thing thats annoying is it produces a stall as it appears to switch eg delay in page load. Think we may have to wait for an update pehaps. Only had my gn2 for 2 weeks. Original rom and hard reset to no change. Sorry I cant help ...just adding to your info.

That's how it works. It goes to 3g when your phone become idle to save power and switches to h+ when your requesting data. For the most part, this is a good thing. You don't want your phone to be locked in to H+ all the time and waste unneeded battery power. It usually switches back to 3g after phone is idle for around 30 seconds (but this delay may greatly differ from network to network). As far as switching constantly from edge to 3g, not really sure about that, my guess is you're in an area with not-so-good 3g coverage, or maybe that's how your network operates (though that would be strange, since constant switching from edge to 3g actually wastes power).
You can dail *#0011# on your stock dailer and watch the RCC state to know how your phone switches from one state to another and how long it takes.
Or you can watch this video (which incidentally was uploaded by xdadevelopers) to learn more
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8L50sCY7CI
Thanks Mohjee.
Any ideas why this doesnt appear to happen on my SG2 ? Steady 3g at work compared to in and out 3g with SG Note 2 .

So Raleigh finally has a few LTE towers active, and with the help of Sensorly I know where those are.
Seems though half the time it doesn't connect. I know it's not a tower issue, as if I turn on airplane mode on then off it will connect to 4G just fine.
I noticed under settings there's the Sprint optimize connection thing. Turning that on/off seems to have no difference.
Is there a file somewhere that I can edit to change the default connection lookup time? Since LTE is different from WiMax, where you don't "really" have control over the 4G radio, I'm assuming there is a time-out feature. A specified amount of time it takes before looking for an LTE signal. If this is true, is there a way to edit that to speed it up just a little bit? Say going from 10 minutes to 5 minutes? I'm not worried about battery life. I can't kill this thing in a day anyways and I'm lucky to have access to power 7/10ths of my work day.
Also I'm not sure if this is related to MA7, Deodexed stock ROM, or what but I am having issues with coming off Wifi to 3G, and 3G not being active. Have to cycle airplane mode a few times to get it to work.
I'm rooted with stock and although my my phone switches fine between Wi-Fi and 3g I did have a little trouble switching between 3g and 4g. One thing I did that helped was switch the mobile network to 3g only then after it reboots switch back to the 3g,lte network, after reboot run a prl update. That may fix your issue. The problem may also be Sprint is still not done boosting the strength on the 4g towers and is still testing them.

Folks,
Your phone will connect to the strongest signal possible....if LTE is stronger it will connect and vice versa. When you toggle your airplane mode or power off/on it scans for everything at that time and will scan LTE and connect even if its weaker. As areas become more saturated it will connect easier
Edit:also turn off the sprint connection optimizer

I understand that. My question pertains to how long in between scans for LTE (I've read anywhere between 10 minutes and 30 minutes) and whetheror not that time can be changed on a rooted phone.

Well the note 2 scans pretty quick...id say <5 mins or so. I can leave my station where theres no lte and drive 1-2 miles and be connected. Once it loses lte it seems to reconnect in under a min. The connection optimizer scans available wifi hotspots and attempts to offload your data on wifi networks you have used before. Ive heard that it connects to wifi spots that you havenrt xonnected before but I havent seen this. It will cut your wifi on periodically to check and so forth. I uncheck mine and freeze it in titanium. ...personally I think it isnt needed and is a waste.

Not true. Your phones data connection is set in a priority order. Wifi is #1 and overrides all, 4G is #2 (will override 3G and 2G even if it's a crappy 4G signal), 3G #3, followed by 2G as the final drop back if none of the others are available.

Although I have "4G" just about everywhere, I have also been through the downtown areas and never seen an LTE icon or anything like that on my phone. Speed test results have also not shown anything significant either. Can someone with known LTE chime in?

Yeah crazy right?
A similar question (I have neither an S4 nor T-Mobile service at this time, but will in the near future).
When you switch from HSPA+ "4G" to LTE 4G... is there an interruption in service for a few seconds as you change networks? I have a Nexus S 4G on Sprint right now, and where I live if I drive 10 miles I will go back and forth between 3G and 4G several times. And every time 4G becomes either available or unavailable, I will have a several second interruption in service while it switches networks. It's so annoying that I sometimes completely disable 4G because I'd rather have slow steady 3G than all these switches back and forth with gaps. Does that make sense?

Its quite normal it just means your radio is switching signals and theres a small down time for a second while it searches for the change in frequency.
Your probably seeing the O with a line thru it for a split second then signal bars arise

Yes, I do understand the reason behind it and that it's normal for my phone.
But I have never used an HSPA+ or LTE network or phone and I'm asking if the same thing happens with the S4 when switching between HSPA+ and LTE. I assume it does, but would appreciate confirmation from someone with the phone, on Tmobile, with both networks available in their area. Thanks.
