LTE? Does The Icon Change? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Silly question, but I'm curious. In my area, according to what I have seen on T-Mobile's website, there is some LTE coverage in the greater downtown area. Although I have "4G" just about everywhere, I have also been through the downtown areas and never seen an LTE icon or anything like that on my phone. Speed test results have also not shown anything significant either. Can someone with known LTE chime in?

Yeah crazy right?

A similar question (I have neither an S4 nor T-Mobile service at this time, but will in the near future).
When you switch from HSPA+ "4G" to LTE 4G... is there an interruption in service for a few seconds as you change networks? I have a Nexus S 4G on Sprint right now, and where I live if I drive 10 miles I will go back and forth between 3G and 4G several times. And every time 4G becomes either available or unavailable, I will have a several second interruption in service while it switches networks. It's so annoying that I sometimes completely disable 4G because I'd rather have slow steady 3G than all these switches back and forth with gaps. Does that make sense?

Its quite normal it just means your radio is switching signals and theres a small down time for a second while it searches for the change in frequency.
Your probably seeing the O with a line thru it for a split second then signal bars arise

Yes, I do understand the reason behind it and that it's normal for my phone.
But I have never used an HSPA+ or LTE network or phone and I'm asking if the same thing happens with the S4 when switching between HSPA+ and LTE. I assume it does, but would appreciate confirmation from someone with the phone, on Tmobile, with both networks available in their area. Thanks.

.12Mb/sec roaming

Description says it all. When I roam onto Verizons towers I only get. 12Mb/sec which is almost no internet at all. Is there a way to fix this? I know the signle from my tower would give me 2.5-3Mb/sec on my evo just a few weeks ago. Ideas guys? Oh i use Roam Controle to switch over to Verizon if that makes a difference
yeah well the best Sprint 3G I can get in my neighborhood is about .25 Mbps. And it's true for many parts of Manhattan, you can't crack .5 Mbps.
I thought verizon dramatically throttles it for roaming.

I dont use 3g much in Manhattan. But where I live(in queens) and where I work and go to school (midtown) I have an awesome 4g signal. When I'm inside, I average anywhere from 6-9mbps and when I'm outside I get about 9-11mbps

It all has to do with the 3g radio in the phone...It sucks...I'm in Dallas TX and I get speeds so low I can't load a web site through opera mini. Any other phone I owned Evo4g and 3d where not that slow at all. 4g is not strong enough to keep a signal while moving/driving so I dont use it much.

Actually, it has all to do with your prl...unless you're on an old or select business prl, almost all current prls only allow 1xrtt data on roaming. So the speeds you are seeing are actually normal 1x speeds
Its confusing though, since our phones seem to be lacking the 1x icon

Actually in many areas, the PRL entry for Verizon is defined to search for Verizon 1x signal while also searching for Sprint EV signal. So you could actually be roaming on Verizon for voice, have the EV/3G indicator, but still be using Sprint for EV/3G data.
This can lead to even more confusion.
Can I get a verizon PRL so I can ise there 3g?

LOL I normally get about .20mbps on Sprint's terrible 3G network, and still no 4G here in Phoenix.
You have to admit Sprints 3G network is a joke. I was sitting at dinner earlier right next to the tower and I was barely breaking 1mbps.

My Moment (August, anyway) was able to roam on 3G in northern Wisconsin. Of course, I believe that that part of AllTel went to Cellular One, not Verizon. That's probably the difference.
In fact, I often got better data speeds in the middle of the forest up north than I do at home in Milwaukee. I usually got 150-200kBs (bytes, not bits) whereas at home, I get 15-20kBs.

speed heavily depends on time and location
can be anywhere from 500kbs-1.5mbs but as slow as 200 if the tower is super hogged.

Damn I would kill for those speeds. In midtown manhattan and on 4G I can only get around 5mbps download (standing next to a window) and 350kbps download.
I can't even get 4G signal in my house downtown. I get only 1 or 2 bars for 3G unless I am standing next to a window.
I need to test the speed of the 3G next time I roam.
this is fps test. hope the pic works this time
From what I understand Verizon does not support 3G roaming with Sprint phones you will only get 1x service. 3G roaming was a deal with Alltel, who got bought out by Verizon and ATT. You are going to get crappy speeds if you are roaming on Verizon.

No 3g on sgh-t989?

Thats not true anymore.. the T-Mobile 4G network has been officially recognized as 4G along with WiMax and LTE. Happened a few months ago.
The reason your only seeing either E or 4G is because those are the networks you are near. And many people believe that T-Mo sets the software to show 4G in the 3G area to "lie".. personally depending where i am, I see 3G or 4G we dont have any edge left in my area any longer..
Either way does it really matter? I mean as long as you have a solid connection..

My friend's Nexus S shows 3G or H -depending on which tower it connects to? I don't know but it does show them at different times. we are still living in the same area. So, I am not so sure that they might have "phased out" the 3G. Confusing..

Suppose it doesn't matter but, I'd rather get 4G > 3G > E, and in that order. As you know, 3G is definitely faster than E and not all markets/areas have been upgraded to 4G...
T-Mobiles "4G" is a boosted UMTS (3G) band per say which is HSDPA. As long as the market you live in supports HSPDA you will see a "4G". If not then you will see a "3G". If none of those you will see "E" for EDGE or "G" for GSM. To say that T-Mobile's "4G" is actually 4G is ridiculous.

But T-Mobile's 4G is really fast. Lets not start bad mouthing here.
I get on average 18-20mbps on T-Mobiles "4G" here in South Florida. These speeds are absolutely horrible! Basically, if you live in an area with mixed coverage where there are 3g bands in addition to hspa plus (a form of 4g), you will see a mixture between 3g and 4g. However, in most areas the 3g bands have been upgraded to support 4g so the 4g > 3g > edge map has the 4g and 3g combined into 4g so you're not losing out on 3g time but rather are gaining 4g time.
Another explanation involves TMobile showing all 3g as 4g regardless of whether it is actually hspa plus or not. This would explain your friend's nexus s coverage changing. Personally, I only see a difference between 3g and 4g on specific roms which would indicate that TMobile does code their roms to label everything above edge as 4g.
Side note: H is the same as 4g as far as we are concerned. H means hspa plus whereas 4g if the more broad category that also includes lte and Wimax. It's like calling my car a ford fusion versus just a Ford. Neither is wrong.
Bottom line: you are not losing out on 3g coverage. At best, you are getting 4g in place of the 3g even when you should be getting 3g. At worst, you are getting both 4g and 3g but your phone is always telling you that you're on 4g

I don't know of any option to make it lte only. Also just cause u have full signal doesn't mean you're not on the edges of it. That's your phones signal not lte signal. Same thing happens to me in Baltimore with LTE. I'll have full signal and lose lte connection.

First, understand that LTE service has not been officially launched in Rockford. It is still under development. Full network buildout will probably continue even after the local market is officially launched.
Second, your "bars" display on the GS3 does not reflect the strength of your LTE signal, only the 1x signal used for voice, text, etc.
Third, if you want to understand the Sprint LTE rollout, go to S4GRU.com and read everything.
i asked because on tmobile when i had them you could just turn phone on to hspa only i thought there would be the same for sprint. ALL THE towers in rockford are complete is what sprint told me i should be receiving lte. east side ,westside, south side had lte even the north just the small neighbor hood that i just moved to today doesn't my old house i had lte which is three blocks away.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using XDA Premium App
The only way to force your Sprint GS3 to LTE only is in the hidden debug menus, for which I think you need your MSL. But when you to that, you are turning off all the other radio functions, so you have no voice or text connectivity.
If you had Sprint LTE service a few blocks away and lost it, and it does not come back by toggling the radio (airplane mode, reboot, etc.) then it may be that you were just on the edge of service in the prior location. What kind of data speeds did you get with LTE there?
It could be that inside your new home the signal is just too weak. If that is the only problem location, the best bet is to us WiFi there.

Ah. Makes sense

I don't get Hspa+ connection everywhere.

I have a Note II Factory unlocked international edition. I also have a $30 Prepaid plan from T-Mobile which is supposed to give me 4G speeds. I dont get them everywhere. At my house i get the 4G speed however when i go to my school which is a mile away. I only get Edge Connection and sometimes out of the blue i get 4G speed back again. Whats wrong with my phone not gewtting those speeds everywhere? its really annoying
My guess is their 4G isn't rolled out wherever your school is.
Or it could be the signal being blocked by all the walls and **** in your school.
It's not a problem with your phone, it's the network itself.

I just got my 7100 unlocked as well and I am on the same plan you are on (its a great deal right?). I have the same problem, I'm stuck on EDGE at home (I'm on wi-fi so its not a big deal) but when I am at work my phone goes crazy. It will switch between H+, H, 3g and EDGE all day long. It will have seizures. The crazy thing is, work is about 10 away from my house so....???
I've been trying to unlock the 1700 band but it may not be possible on the GT-7100. when hitting *#7284#. You're supposed to go into the "Qualcomm usb settings" but that option does not exist on my phone. Anywhere. Its just not there. So I'm stuck.
I know Tmobile is in the process of refarming their network to 1900, but I have no idea when they are going to complete that project. Anyone know?
It may turn out that we'll have to either put up with the EDGE speeds or go with Straight Talk...
Pretty much what the guy beneath you has said. I not every provider guarantees that you will get the same speed everywhere. Not even to mention that tmobile is the only major provider in europe with very very bad coverage.

Sounds like a Tmo reception issue since it happens with both devices.
You can check your dBm signal strength and see how it compares to when you're in a good signal area, both phones compared to each other, and/or individually.

(see attachment below, the lower the dBm, the stronger the signal)
But it sounds like a Tower/reception proprietary issue with T-Mobile.
You can always call Tmo to ask and/or confirm this.....

According to time stamp:
Home - Edge - strongest signal - 79dBm
1 mile away - 4G - weakest 107
2 miles away - LTE - weaker 106 -
I suggest changing your Network mode to possibly the 2nd choice in the list of the 4 options. You can find that here:
Change the setting accordingly till you find the best option.
As I mentioned, call T-Mobile and ask them about their LTE Network in your area, as it is not cconsistent. At your home, you have Edge, which is the slowest speed, but strongest signal. Compared to LTE, which you're connecting to, but weak signal, so suggest to change to no LTE in that area, so it hopefully forces your device to connect to stronger signal. Or words to that affect
Let me know.....

Some reasons why mobile phone signal can be weaker or stronger in some areas.
For instance, a very strong signal outside of a structure, but not inside a structure, etc., etc.
The following are just some basics.

I thought the issue was when you're away from your home, you were getting weak LTE, which is why I suggested to change your setting as per my previous post, as well as calling Tmo to see network availability in your area.

that tower that is close to me I found out is only a 2g (edge) tower, T-Mobile told me that they are getting their engineers out to look at it. My phone won't switch the towers because I'm so close to it. Wonder why it won't just pull off the 4g tower? Hopefully they fix it but idk how all that goes. probably a new tower I assume?
