Can someone let me know why my phone never shows 3g? Either it is showing 'E' or 4G. My nexus used to show 3G.
I am under the assumption that this sgh-t989 can connect to all those networks t-mobile has....
Thanks

It might be because of the fact that everything being advertised now as '4G' is technically '3G.

Thats not true anymore.. the T-Mobile 4G network has been officially recognized as 4G along with WiMax and LTE. Happened a few months ago.
The reason your only seeing either E or 4G is because those are the networks you are near. And many people believe that T-Mo sets the software to show 4G in the 3G area to "lie".. personally depending where i am, I see 3G or 4G we dont have any edge left in my area any longer..
Either way does it really matter? I mean as long as you have a solid connection..

My friend's Nexus S shows 3G or H -depending on which tower it connects to? I don't know but it does show them at different times. we are still living in the same area. So, I am not so sure that they might have "phased out" the 3G. Confusing..

Suppose it doesn't matter but, I'd rather get 4G > 3G > E, and in that order. As you know, 3G is definitely faster than E and not all markets/areas have been upgraded to 4G...
T-Mobiles "4G" is a boosted UMTS (3G) band per say which is HSDPA. As long as the market you live in supports HSPDA you will see a "4G". If not then you will see a "3G". If none of those you will see "E" for EDGE or "G" for GSM. To say that T-Mobile's "4G" is actually 4G is ridiculous.

But T-Mobile's 4G is really fast. Lets not start bad mouthing here.
I get on average 18-20mbps on T-Mobiles "4G" here in South Florida. These speeds are absolutely horrible! Youtube videos are fully cached in seconds and i don't even get the buffering icon so I can sneeze or make sure my car is even being driven in the right direction! Someone should report them to the BBB!

Then call it ridiculous because as of the end of last year the hspa + network was accepted as 4G. As well as wimax and LTE. Since previous non of these where "real " 4G.. 100mbps.

Basically, if you live in an area with mixed coverage where there are 3g bands in addition to hspa plus (a form of 4g), you will see a mixture between 3g and 4g. However, in most areas the 3g bands have been upgraded to support 4g so the 4g > 3g > edge map has the 4g and 3g combined into 4g so you're not losing out on 3g time but rather are gaining 4g time.
Another explanation involves TMobile showing all 3g as 4g regardless of whether it is actually hspa plus or not. This would explain your friend's nexus s coverage changing. Personally, I only see a difference between 3g and 4g on specific roms which would indicate that TMobile does code their roms to label everything above edge as 4g.
Side note: H is the same as 4g as far as we are concerned. H means hspa plus whereas 4g if the more broad category that also includes lte and Wimax. It's like calling my car a ford fusion versus just a Ford. Neither is wrong.
Bottom line: you are not losing out on 3g coverage. At best, you are getting 4g in place of the 3g even when you should be getting 3g. At worst, you are getting both 4g and 3g but your phone is always telling you that you're on 4g

I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.

I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That would explain why my speed test have been the same on umts and hspad on the status section =( thx mate
Sent from my G2, XDA app =)
When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

Max download 0.89!
Hello,
I am new to Android - do I have to turn on something to get higher speeds?
I consitently get 0.89 no matter where I am.
In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.
I am thinking a bad phone, maybe? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mobile Signal Widget for me also

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

Hi,
Might be one of a few having the galaxy nexus GT-I9250 in Canada.. I tuned on the phone and it found Fido and it worked. I get 3g and H on the signal bar. How do i k ow if I have hspa + or 4g lte on the phone? Will it show 4g or H+?
Speed test gets only around 1 meg down...
Fido and rogers are one, according to service map by rogers HSPA+ is in Ottawa and soon LTE. Will they prevent Fido users from 4g?
Any settings I have to enter on phone to get the higher speeds? Anyone in Canada has this working?
Thanks a lot for any insight u might have...

forget LTE it will not work (for CDMA networks like Bell/Telus)
get the GSM version to work
The phone doesn't have LTE. It has GSM and HSPA+.
As far as speeds, you're going to have to talk to other Fido users in the same area and see their speeds (or other phones you own with the same SIM card). There may be some changes to the APNs you can do to increase speeds, again you're going to want to ask Fido users.
as for knowing how fast you are going
it's simply a matter of speed
in Canada normal H+ speed is around 8 Mbps down at best
if you seed speed that goes beyond 16 Mbps, you are most likely on "4G"
there's no real 4G if you check Wikipedia
all the current LTE / 4G technology are fake
they are more like 3.5G = H+, so "4G/LTE" is actually more like 3.75G
the real 4G is on WiMax radio which is not very popular in many places and phones
Is there a version that supports lte? All over web they say galaxy nexus lte...
If anyone lives in ottawa and has Fido, please share ur experience and settings.

There is 1 version with LTE. And that is made for Verizon USA. You're probably only going to see the GSM/HSPA+ version in Canada.
Thanks all. OK, so hspa + I will forget about lte..
How do i know if my phone is connected to hspa+?
Will it has a plus sign on signal bar. If i go to settings, then about phone, then status. It shows the current connection, what should it be? Anybody has hspa+ can tell me what they see in status in setting and the signal icon on top?
I will be happy with around 8mb

So under connection it'll say "EDGE" on 2G, "UMTS" on 3G, and "HSDPA"/"HSPA+" on 3.5G/4G/H+ (depends what your carrier wants to call it).
i believe he was speaking about the ICON indicator on the status bar
it'll be either 3G in most areas, and in really go areas you'll see H+ or 4G depending on the ROM how it was coded for the signal quality strength
once you start flashing custom ROMs you'll notice that will change too, depending on the ROM Dev, it's all cosmetic eye candy
if you want to know the real deal install Open Signal from Market
it has a nice widget that tells you the true tower capacity
It fluctuates between
Umts:3 and hspa:11
The reason I ask about the plus is that there is hspa only.. no plus and i am not sure if the hspa:11 means plus or no plus.

Like I said earlier, if under "status" you see UMTS then you're on 3g. If you see HSPA you're on "4g". What that means for speeds is up to Fido.
The ROM just has "H" icon I believe. You won't see H+.
First of all, Bell and Rogers are GSM networks and they support LTE, however the phone itself only supports HSPA+ 21mb/s. Only the CDMA Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus will support LTE.
Note: This is only as far as my knowledge extends to, and I don't accept any responsibility if anything goes wrong
Thanks for all the replies. I had a nexus one which only supports hspa, not hspa+ and i used to see Hspa there. That is why I was concerned if the hspa I am seeing is using the plus protocol which supports a much faster speed than hspa. This is why seeing an h only, or hspa in connection didn't give me a good feeling as i had it on my nexus one. Its the hspa+ that gives me the extra speed on the galaxy nexus and i wonders if its being used.
Thanks for all your help and comment guys.. I appreciate it
It seems like the Verizon LTE version will not work on Fido/Rogers or Bell/Telus (each of which seems to have their own LTE network)
If you want to do a good speed test while around the BC area, go to Whistler and then do a speedtest.net test (via the app).
I've had 6MB/s down on standard HSPA.
Thanks for the info.
I found that in ottawa if i use spedtest.net app I only get between 1 and 2. If I use open signal, another App on market, I get around 6mb/sec.
Thanks.
I really just don't understand why T-mobile wouldn't include the ability to connect to 3G as well as H+ with this phone. It just sucks because you literally can't do anything on edge and it's pretty much useless. Is there any possible way to enable 3G and H+ through the APN's or something. (I did search around for this but couldn't find anything) Also it can apparently connect to AT&T 3G so wouldn't that show that it might be able to connect to T-mobile 3G in some way? (unless I'm completely wrong in assuming this lol)

All of tmo's 3g is H , you just can't connect to AT&T's 3g unless you have an AT&T sim card and are unlocked ...
You will just normally get an H instead of it saying 3g, IF you can't get H then you are not in a "Tmobile 3g area" ...
TMO H+ should show as 4g, but that depends on the ROM you are using, I don't remember what stock looked like .... I know mine says H when I am on tmo 3g and 4g when on H+ ...

Actually I believe if you check the ITU standards H+ qualifies for 4g so it can be called 4g , really when it was released 4g did not even qualify as 4g ....
When you are using 4g you will see both data and standby as 4g only when on "3g" will it show "3g" during non-data usage and will show H during data usage ... (or it should , might be different if using a non-stock ROM)
EDIT: 3g/H/4g/H+ , really when it comes down to it the name does not matter, the speed of the network is what matters, they can call it "BubbaSmith" band and I would not care, it is the speed that makes the actual difference ...
and in my "4g" area, TMO currently smokes VZ/AT&T "4g" ..

I have seen those reports as well, but the ones I have seen are always theoretical speeds ...
I know in my area where VZ has LTE, and I have H+ I still get better speeds ...
One of the things, not all CPU's regardless of the radio, have the chipset support to reach the maximum, but ours is one of them that does, as does the Skyrocket ....
Where I actually live I have crappy service , but next time I am town, I will try and remember to save a screen shot of my speeds, last time I was getting in the high 20's without any issues, but I do average around 18 down and 2.5 up ....

I'm on the same boat homie. Can't figure it out. I guess it's just another amazing T-Mobile limitation.
Tmobiles 3g and 4g network are the same the 4g is actually just 3g with better antenna technology and I think a power boost. The 3g network is called hspa and 4g is hspa+. That is why att had 3g 3.5g and 4g att considered the hspa+ 3.5g because they launched their lte network as 4g. So technically when tmo launches lte it will be tmos 5g. They changed the definition of the whole thing a while ago. G stands for generation. So that is why tmobile is allowed to call it 4g because it is their 4 generation of high speed internet. There is no actually standard. like edge being 2g hspa being 3g lte 4g the way it should be.
For the roms that use the h, h+, 3g format usually 3g actually EDGE or 2g. H is 3g and h+ is 4g So the net is probally not broken it is just ridiculously slow. I hope I explained that right. That is what it seems like to me from GOOGLEING it.

Hey thanks for that info. I tested out all networks again...
4G = Fast Data.
3G = No Data AT ALL.
Edge = Slow Data.
If T-Mobile's 4G and 3G networks are the same thing, why don't I get data when the phone says it's connected to a 3G tower? I had 3G service with my previous phone and it had decent data speed. I could stream music and browse the web easily. Now... 3G just doesn't work at all.

Cool man keep us updated!!
Hello all!
I have an S4. It's fairly new. I like it and all, good phone. Anyway, my one beef is that I have 2 options for data service - 4g and Edge (no LTE here yet.) I wish that I could use 3g when 4g isn't available (edge is too slow) but nothing I've tried works... APN settings, cell network settings.... It's only 2g or 4g. I live in a reframed area (1900 MHz 3g... Cincinnati) which, according to the phone's specs, it should support. Tmobile support said on Twitter that it wouldn't get any 3g, but I like to take what they say with a pinch of salt, especially since a flagship phone not getting 3g is pretty ridiculous.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'll give you my best guess. T-mobile doesn't have 4G. They call it 4G, but it's really like 3.5G or HSPA. It will show on your phone as 4G though when you are connected to any "H" network or UMTS bands. When you go into menu> settings> more networks> mobile networks> network mode, you should set it to GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) to force 3.5G or 4G as tmo calls it.
I know this doesn't answer your question per se. Edge or "E" is slow as molasses. Verizon's 3G is almost as slow believe it or not (in my location).
Do you not have WIFI?
Or you can dial *#2263# and you will be in service mode. Choose Lte Gsm. It will force Lte
He doesn't have LTE

When you go into menu> settings> more networks> mobile networks> network mode, you should set it to GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) to force 3.5G or 4G as tmo calls it.
I know this doesn't answer your question per se. Edge or "E" is slow as molasses. Verizon's 3G is almost as slow believe it or not (in my location).
Do you not have WIFI?

Yeah, I understand that it's "3.5G" but there should be 3G too....not just "3.5G" and 2G...I'm wondering if I can get 3G on this and if not, why I don't. I have Wifi but not when I leave the house
In short the answer is no. Tmo has its network and it is the way it is. Were you with a cdma carrier (sprint / Verizon) before? Sounds like that's what you are looking for
GS4
No, AT&T and Cincinnati Bell before, never used CDMA.
I read that when T-Mobile upgraded their network, they replaced their 3g with 3.5g - leaving only a few small pockets of T-Mobile 3g remaining. Oh well, I guess that's why they're adding LTE - will be nice when they finally get their stuff straight around here!
Thanks for your help

I live in an area with lte but recently traveled to another city. While driving on the interstate I was getting anywhere from E (in middle of nowhere), 3G (near the city) and 4G (once in the city). So I know this phone is capable of 3G in area with no lte/4G

Thanks! Must be just T-Mo's network then. At least I'll have 4g and LTE when they finally get it here.

Thanks!

If I remember correctly when t-mo started with "4g" the majority of the phones had 2 radios, one for 2g and one for 3/4g and it is basically the same way still. So you're never going to see anything in regards to 3g only. but even though your data connection icon may say 4g, u could technically be on 3g at the time.
