I don't get Hspa+ connection everywhere. - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Note II Factory unlocked international edition. I also have a $30 Prepaid plan from T-Mobile which is supposed to give me 4G speeds. I dont get them everywhere. At my house i get the 4G speed however when i go to my school which is a mile away. I only get Edge Connection and sometimes out of the blue i get 4G speed back again. Whats wrong with my phone not gewtting those speeds everywhere? its really annoying

My guess is their 4G isn't rolled out wherever your school is.
Or it could be the signal being blocked by all the walls and **** in your school.
It's not a problem with your phone, it's the network itself.

I just got my 7100 unlocked as well and I am on the same plan you are on (its a great deal right?). I have the same problem, I'm stuck on EDGE at home (I'm on wi-fi so its not a big deal) but when I am at work my phone goes crazy. It will switch between H+, H, 3g and EDGE all day long. It will have seizures. The crazy thing is, work is about 10 away from my house so....???
I've been trying to unlock the 1700 band but it may not be possible on the GT-7100. when hitting *#7284#. You're supposed to go into the "Qualcomm usb settings" but that option does not exist on my phone. Anywhere. Its just not there. So I'm stuck.
I know Tmobile is in the process of refarming their network to 1900, but I have no idea when they are going to complete that project. Anyone know?
It may turn out that we'll have to either put up with the EDGE speeds or go with Straight Talk...

Pretty much what the guy beneath you has said. I not every provider guarantees that you will get the same speed everywhere. Not even to mention that tmobile is the only major provider in europe with very very bad coverage.

Yes exactly the problem i am facing. its very frustrating. My phone switches with all day long it mostly stays on Edge though.

This has nothing to do with your phone. Tmobile USA has not rolled out the compatible 3G frequency yet.

HSPA+

I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That would explain why my speed test have been the same on umts and hspad on the status section =( thx mate
Sent from my G2, XDA app =)
When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

Max download 0.89!
Hello,
I am new to Android - do I have to turn on something to get higher speeds?
I consitently get 0.89 no matter where I am.
In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.
I am thinking a bad phone, maybe? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mobile Signal Widget for me also

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

[Q]HOW TO Connect To A 4G Band Galaxy SII?

A few weeks ago, I posted a thread asking why does my friend get 4G, but I don't. If you are like me in a situation like this, the process is simple. In my area, there are 4G and Edge bands that phones connect to. My phone persistently connected to the edge band while my friend connects to the 4G. So lets get to the point shall we.
If you are having problems like me try this:
Go to your settings, wireless and network, mobile networks, and then select network mode. (After doing some research about GSM and WCDMA, I found out that GSM (3G aka edge) was slower than WCDMA (the newer technology 3G).
Select WCDMA. (For me it took a while so don't worry. If it does take too much time then select WCDMA + GSM.) You are going to have to select it anyway when you are done if you don't automatically connect to 4G.
When you select the combination, your phone should reconnect to your carrier provider and you should get 4G like me.
Oh. F.Y.I. T-Mobile doesn't actually have 4G. It's just a fast 3G network called HSPA, but they still display the 4G symbol when you have it. Hope it helps somebody.

I don't know if you still have the sticker, but look on top of your Galaxy S2 and there should be a sticker that reads "Qualcomm 3G HSDPA". Sorry folks, correction HSDPA*
No company has "4G", none of them meet the official requirements of 4G. Just because your phone says 4G doesn't mean it actually is. Just because David Copperfield made it LOOK like he made a Boeing-747 disappear doesn't mean he ACTUALLY did

Well sort of. Wiki mentions it but glazes over it a bit. It's a reference anyone can change of course so take it with a grain of salt. ITU relaxed their position about this time last year to include "evolving technologies" of which WiMax, LTE and HSPDA are all included.
So the reality is, all the carriers can make the 4G claim and sleep comfortably and the extended reality is, the speeds are all showing that next evolutionary step in speed, even if the technology as it sits today is just that. Steps toward LTE Advanced and whatever WiMax is calling their next version. As a TMobile customer, and one that it seems will stay with the TMobile branding it's unfortunate they are using a technology that has it's limits. But I'm getting 10-15Mbps on occasion and solid 7 to 8 Mbps speeds generally speaking so I'm not complaining. Until the carriers clear more spectrum what "G" it is isn't relevant to me. With 2Gbps, or even 5Gb soft caps I don't need to get to my ceiling any faster than I am now.

Well technically it is a quarter of the speed. If you are going by 100mbs defintion.
By industry standards , marketing, its 4g. But the term is meaningless. It is way faster than previous generation of phones.
So whatever, I'm calling 4g.
Multi-channel HSPA is capable of ~40Mbps, which is damned fast.
Call it what you want; technically LTE ir WiMax is 4g, but if it runs as fast as the others, who cares what it's called?
You would think at those speeds you'll burn through your data cap in days. I don't get the requirement for faster data speeds let alone just for minor things.

Can we end this stupid 4g/3g debate? I'll end it for you right now.
Until a few months ago NONE of the technologies out were 4g, not LTE, not WiMax, not HSAP+ ...BUT the ITU (International Telecommunications Union), which are the people that say what's what in the wireless industry, folded under the marketing schemes of the big 4 here in the U.S. and said that TECHNICALLY NOW LTE, WiMax, and HSPA+ All count as 4g. So...yes they have 4g. A few months ago they didn't. Now they do.
So what was the trick again? lol

Yeah... mine says 4G also.. odd your sticker is different... As for hitting your cap faster, that doesnt really make much sense since it is just loading faster not loading more..
I have no issues calling it 4G since I get about 19-25 in the late hours pf the night and no less than 13 during prime time hours.

Wikipedia is an administrator-approved peer-editing system. For one, there are references to back up the claims made, two, you can't just click "edit" then put in whatever you want. A Wiki admin approves all edits made, so bogus stuff can't just be easily added. (Sorry, I'm just sick an tired of people claiming wiki is a poor source for valid information, when in reality it's one of the most largest and beneficial information sources on the internet. Again, sorry, didn't mean that as an attack on you lol)
Either way, yes, our "4G" is fast, but in reality it's not in comparison to what it should be. And for those of you with worries about your data caps, these will be removed in due time. It becomes easier and easier to reach those caps without any effort at all (Google Music being a perfect example), carriers won't have a choice but to remove data caps, especially with carriers like sprint still offering unlimited data (for now lol)

T Mobile Pay as You Go on N7100

Hi there. So I have been using my phone in Simple Mobile and was wondering if making a jump to T Mobile would make difference in the data speeds as they are laying down the new towers and all.
So is anyone using their N7100s on T Mobile? If so please tell me how good are the data speeds and if you are from Chicago even better.

Hi
I activated a tmobile online only offer, 30$ for 100 min, unlimited text and first 5 gb at 4g speeds. The phone can't get 4g but it's still fast, when it's in a refarmed area. I'm living in DC and I say "as long" because even though DC should be all refarmed, as I go to work I often go to edge... I guess it's just based on the different towers and the phone switching from one another... Unluckily I work in an area without a refarmed tower...
I was so frustrated that I bought a nexus 4 to always have h+! Used it 2 weeks and went back to the Note today... I just like it better, even if with the h+/edge thing going on...
I am considering on getting straightalk, so that I can go on an att network. I believe the phone would work fine and att should have better coverage. I still have to look into it. I don't know if it would be h+ but having always 3g is better than having h+ sometimes...
With straight talk att you would get hspa+ (4). I'm curious about the t mobile service working though.
The N7100 will only get edge data on TMobile's network. Yes TMobile is moving their HSPA+ to 1900 Mhz but it is nowhere near complete and even cities that people claim are already converted have spotty coverage. Sell your N7100 and buy a TMobile Note2 or buy an ATT Note2 and do the AWS mod to it. For the transition, it's best to have a phone that covers both 1700 and 1900. Note2s are dropping in price. I just bought 2 like new TMobile Notes for $400 each.

totally agree with you on that...
did you buy it new for that price? where?
I'm still hoping that little by little they will improve the coverage... but it seems pretty stuck now, 2 months and still the same coverage...
I'll just wait for the note 3 to come out...

I have the same issue. I'm in the SF Bay Area and even though TMobile's site has where I live and work as dark green (excellent 4g) I am lucky to get even one bar. Half the time I get network errors. Anyone else with TMobile experience anything like this? Any chance it's something that'll get resolved before my 30 day return period ends?
do any of you have other tmobile phones to compare signals with? if so, do that and if there are major differences talk to a tmobile store about getting a replacement.
these might be isolated incidents, because the majority of people are getting fully functional units

my data speeds are *top notch*.
you are either in an area thats out of tmobiles footprint or have a defective unit.
best bet would be to wait till tmobile actually gets the GS4 on display in the store.
when they do, go to your nearest tmob, and do a speedtest.net comparison with the demo model, and yours. if they are similar, then your part of the bay is legacy; if there is a big difference; 3,4 5 etc megabit difference; your unit may be worth exchanging for a new unit.

Still no signal inside my workplace. Will do more tests. It does seem the signal is more stable, but it's only been a couple days.
Also, 4G LTE flashed for a couple seconds at my house. I live in the D.C metro area. Nice.
I have the HTC One in the Phoenix market. LTE is difficult to find more than a few bars on. 4G HSPA+ has been very easy to get full bars on.
I'm somewhat convinced T-Mobile is still working on building out in even LTE and re-farmed markets.

Its funny how T-Mobile improves their network and yet many years later I still don't have service in places where I had no service maybe 5-6 years ago. And on top of this I noticed even more dead spots. I think T-Mobile should be working on that along with building penatration.....I would much rather have 3G everywhere then LTE almost nowhere.
Lately it became very frustrating since my wife has no service at work, i have no service at work, and i recently moved to different location and still no service....and God forbid I loose my wife in the mall, I have zero chances of finding her because no T-Mobile service inside.
Just got my S4 today and did not realize theres LTE where I work (fremont) which I never saw on my note 2. Even went out to lunch and was still getting LTE the next street over. So just to test I'm now back on my note 2 and it is not picking up LTE at my work. That tells me the radio on the s4 is much better.

yea its something with the S4's phone/modem. I get bars and shows signal strength of 3 to 4 bars and i can make call but no internet in certain areas all around Los Angeles County/Orange County/Las Vegas/NYC. To test it i had my buddy go with me with his LG L9 and my buddy with his LG L9 phone would work fine on the calls and data/internet meanwhile my S4 would only get calls but no data as if it was a deadspot. i would have to go around like 1/4 or so before it would work again. its really strange not to mention annoying. I noticed this started happening to me after i upgraded from MDB to the MDL baseband and after i unlocked the phone using the "debug service menu". i wish i knew someone else with a stock TMO S4 to test my findings out more. I also cant wait for more tmo S4 modems. ive been thinking of ODINing back to stock MDB to test my theory, but i have just been lazy.

i think it was a TMO LTE tower upgrade issues. after doing the Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Network mode > and switching between the WCDMA and GSM one or the other now will work. better to have some internet than no internet, weird how the S4 just wont switch over to the working GSM internet if WCDMA fails....i guess when they coded it they figured if u have bars it "should work in theory" but they were wrong ...personally i think this should be considered a "bug"
I thought I was the only one. I found that if i keep my diztronic tpu case on while in my pocket it destroys all signal for some reason. I take it off and its fine.

I further tested my theory and went without my case all day. It didnt appear to do anything different at all. I am on CM10.1, I think I might go back to stock for awhile to see if it changes the fluctuating signal issue.
Just curious on how everyones signal is and which baseband they are on?
I'm on M919UVUAMDL and I have seen up to 15% of no signal while my S3 had 0 signal loss in a regular day.

LTE? Does The Icon Change?

Silly question, but I'm curious. In my area, according to what I have seen on T-Mobile's website, there is some LTE coverage in the greater downtown area. Although I have "4G" just about everywhere, I have also been through the downtown areas and never seen an LTE icon or anything like that on my phone. Speed test results have also not shown anything significant either. Can someone with known LTE chime in?

Silly question, but I'm curious. In my area, according to what I have seen on T-Mobile's website, there is some LTE coverage in the greater downtown area. Although I have "4G" just about everywhere, I have also been through the downtown areas and never seen an LTE icon or anything like that on my phone. Speed test results have also not shown anything significant either. Can someone with known LTE chime in?

Yeah crazy right?
A similar question (I have neither an S4 nor T-Mobile service at this time, but will in the near future).
When you switch from HSPA+ "4G" to LTE 4G... is there an interruption in service for a few seconds as you change networks? I have a Nexus S 4G on Sprint right now, and where I live if I drive 10 miles I will go back and forth between 3G and 4G several times. And every time 4G becomes either available or unavailable, I will have a several second interruption in service while it switches networks. It's so annoying that I sometimes completely disable 4G because I'd rather have slow steady 3G than all these switches back and forth with gaps. Does that make sense?

Its quite normal it just means your radio is switching signals and theres a small down time for a second while it searches for the change in frequency.
Your probably seeing the O with a line thru it for a split second then signal bars arise

Yes, I do understand the reason behind it and that it's normal for my phone.
But I have never used an HSPA+ or LTE network or phone and I'm asking if the same thing happens with the S4 when switching between HSPA+ and LTE. I assume it does, but would appreciate confirmation from someone with the phone, on Tmobile, with both networks available in their area. Thanks.
