So Raleigh finally has a few LTE towers active, and with the help of Sensorly I know where those are.
Seems though half the time it doesn't connect. I know it's not a tower issue, as if I turn on airplane mode on then off it will connect to 4G just fine.
I noticed under settings there's the Sprint optimize connection thing. Turning that on/off seems to have no difference.
Is there a file somewhere that I can edit to change the default connection lookup time? Since LTE is different from WiMax, where you don't "really" have control over the 4G radio, I'm assuming there is a time-out feature. A specified amount of time it takes before looking for an LTE signal. If this is true, is there a way to edit that to speed it up just a little bit? Say going from 10 minutes to 5 minutes? I'm not worried about battery life. I can't kill this thing in a day anyways and I'm lucky to have access to power 7/10ths of my work day.
Also I'm not sure if this is related to MA7, Deodexed stock ROM, or what but I am having issues with coming off Wifi to 3G, and 3G not being active. Have to cycle airplane mode a few times to get it to work.
I'm rooted with stock and although my my phone switches fine between Wi-Fi and 3g I did have a little trouble switching between 3g and 4g. One thing I did that helped was switch the mobile network to 3g only then after it reboots switch back to the 3g,lte network, after reboot run a prl update. That may fix your issue. The problem may also be Sprint is still not done boosting the strength on the 4g towers and is still testing them.

I am having no problems going to 4g from 3g or 3g from 4g but they are pretty far in my area. That might be the problem is there not that far by you

Folks,
Your phone will connect to the strongest signal possible....if LTE is stronger it will connect and vice versa. When you toggle your airplane mode or power off/on it scans for everything at that time and will scan LTE and connect even if its weaker. As areas become more saturated it will connect easier
Edit:also turn off the sprint connection optimizer

I understand that. My question pertains to how long in between scans for LTE (I've read anywhere between 10 minutes and 30 minutes) and whetheror not that time can be changed on a rooted phone.
What exactly does the sprint connection optimizer do?

Well the note 2 scans pretty quick...id say <5 mins or so. I can leave my station where theres no lte and drive 1-2 miles and be connected. Once it loses lte it seems to reconnect in under a min. The connection optimizer scans available wifi hotspots and attempts to offload your data on wifi networks you have used before. Ive heard that it connects to wifi spots that you havenrt xonnected before but I havent seen this. It will cut your wifi on periodically to check and so forth. I uncheck mine and freeze it in titanium. ...personally I think it isnt needed and is a waste.

Ok cool. So you didnt notice any change with 4g connectivity with the sprint optimizer disabled?
I guess theyre just still working on the towers. My maket hasnt officiallyblaunched yet but close to 1/4 of the city's got connectivity.

I havent had any issues connecting to 4g with it turned off. I think here in Indy we are like the 40-50% or so and its pretty lit up.

Not true. Your phones data connection is set in a priority order. Wifi is #1 and overrides all, 4G is #2 (will override 3G and 2G even if it's a crappy 4G signal), 3G #3, followed by 2G as the final drop back if none of the others are available.

Oh I should've read that thoroughly. I see what you did there. First you were like it connects to the strongest signal possible then you were like it connects to 4G even if it's a weaker signal... What a way to contradict yourself kinda makes no sense which is why the confusion.

So I leave wifi on, and the nexus holds onto to a useless weak wifi signal sometimes before switching to 3g. Annoying #1.
When I t run off wifi, I often have 3g not activated. Often have to either reboot or toggle plane mode. Annoyance #2.
Any solutions?

Pray and wait for next official radio firmware update or burn your nexus and get iTelephone.
Move to an area with better reception. Its not the phones fault at all.

please specify which phone you have. GSM/HSPA or CDMA/LTE?
I have cdma verizon phone.
To say "move to stronger area" is not an issue. If I'm in a solid 3g are, but a weak wifi area, phone holds onto slow unusable wifi instead of solid 3g"
Have 4g off
Is there a way to have wifi only connect if over a certain strength?
Will 4.03 make 3g radio connect more reliably and quickly. Absolutely cannot use battery saving app with this phone, as when I'm using 3g, and turn phone on, either have to wait 5 mins to get mobile connection or I get the greyed out 3g

I've had the same issue. It's only happened twice where I switch off wifi and it refuses to turn on 3g, didn't think about toggling airplane mode though. I had to restart both times. I'm thinking its software, at least I hope so.

Bullschit.
This is 100% the phone's fault.
I am having this problem today. Unfortunately I have not been able to reconnect to 3G all day. 4G, fine... 3G, nothing. My two colleagues with Thunderbolts are having NO problems switching their LTE radios off and running CDMA only. My Galaxy Nexus is the only one that can't find a 3G connection.
I'm starting to hate this phone more and more every day.
If you're in an area with poor wifi, why not just turn wifi off and utilize the 3G at all times?
Same problem here. I prefer 3G to 4G for battery life. For the first week or so, no problem - now I can never get 3G, but 4G works fine. I don't think its the phone - I think its Verizon and its network choices.
Connected to wifi usually offers better battery life in my experience however weak signal kills battery so maybe keeping it on 3g is the better solution here.
Any way of you strengthening your wifi signal?

I love my gnex, but I got a microsim card adapter in the mail, so I can switch back to my bolt when I need a reliable 3G radio, until google/samsung/vzw get the radio is fixed in the gnex.
It took months before the bolt's radio problems got sorted out. I hope it won't take as long with the gnrx.

I would just turn off wifi, but when I do, it takes too long for 3g to start up...and often it doesn't start up unless switch to airplane mode

what roms are yall running?
If you're running Stock, then it's the phone's fault and you should call VZW to get it swapped out.
If not running stock, then it may be the rom at fault.
Just got the phone today and rooted it right away In the last 7 hours its dropped about 7 times. Im not sure if its because of root or what. I have not installed any other rom.
Its not the root... Its the carrier

Could it be because im inside and its trying to switch between H+ and LTE all the time? Is there a toggle i can just keep it at H+?
I would find that unlikely but you can try being on HSPA only and see what happens

You can go to settings, more, mobile networks and switch from gsm/lte or just gsm. But I have not dropped data other than H to 3G every once and a while in weird areas but not a whole lot, but talk to bell online chat and see what they say.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
what do you mean it loses signals?
does it get disconnected to the network completely? and you get the emergency calls only message?
because that happens to me as well. I am also thinking its because the phone tries to switch from LTE to H+ over and over.
I think I'm getting the same problem, a fee times a day i get zero signal, then all of a sudden it pops to full signal, without moving the phone. When i lost the signal, it says emergency calls only...

I had the same issue downtown Ottawa. I switched to HSPA+ only and the problem went away. Turned out, Bell was working on their LTE stuff and that was going up and down and so did the phone. Now, it is all good.
Try having Bell reset your connection from their system....then get them to give you a different SIM card.
I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was in a zone not completly covered by LTE, whenever my phone lost LTE connection I would lose all signal for a bit to eventually drop back to HSPA+, I simply disabled LTE until the coverage reaches where I am completly.
Yep, disabled LTE for now. Problem has gone away and battery life fixed
me and my brother have had the issue in dowtown ottawa on rogers. seems fine in my apt in the market but on a patio and at a restaurant it just wouldnt work!! couldnt send texts, or receive, couldnt call, sometimes it showed i had full bars and lte but couldnt do anything. my brother complained about this the day before. i will try disabling lte next time

For some reason my area inexplicably became a dead zone about a month ago and now I have to rely on wifi calling. Only problem is this phone seems to have a weak wifi radio. My ipod touch and my laptop always have more bars. I get about 1 or 2 bars in my office and it drops calls at that point.
I read somewhere that different kernels can help with this issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You HAVE to have cell service to make calls on wifi. If it can't at least register with the network it won't work.
What case are you using, my case weakens my WiFi signal

I go case free. And wifi calling works perfect when I am in the same room as the router. Go to another room and I constantly get call drop notifications.

i agree wifi is weak. at school i have a hard time connecting to their wifi. in settings it shows strength as very good but when i try to connect it takes along time and then doesnt connect after all because it says the signal is weak.
That's odd. I can't recall ever having an issue with wifi...
Is it supposedly a problem on all variants?

Yes i've noticed that the WiFi reception is a bit weak with this device....I noticed it because I rely heavily on it in my house for WiFi calling, and I compared it with previous devices I've used with WiFi calling in the past.

Are you guys sure it isn't the router? Or perhaps it just reads/reports signal stregnth different than your older phones. (As in, the signal is just as strong, but your old phone reported that signal as 4bars, while the gs3 reports it as 3)
I'm not saying everyone is wrong, I know you're probably right on for your situation, I'm just trying to toss out things you may not have considered.
Right now I'm in my garage, about 15 yards away from my router with 2 walls (one brick) between, and I'm showing full signal. I can double that distance, add more walls and sitting in my car I still pull a signal. Yes it is far weaker but still useable.

I've had the galaxy nexus for a while now and I've tried all the radios. I can stay on 3g just fine, but I can never stay on 4g. It will stay connected for a little bit, but once I start using the phone like on the internet or instagram or anything like that, 4g drops and I go strait to 3g. Any help would be appreciated

What radio are you using right now? I am using Jelly Bean Radios FF02/FG02 and 4g works fine for me.
Ya I'm using the same as u and it seems to be better but still has random drops when I get into high data usage
maybe its your lte coverage? if the 3g signal is better, itll chose that.
Could be coverage, could be capping speeds

Do yourself favor and just turn off 4G.
For 1: Its a battery hog.
2: You don't need 80mbps every second of the day.
Think of 4G as an alternate to WiFi. I enable mine when I want to sit down and do some heavy surfing or app downloads. I prefer WiFi but 4G is my backup. I keep WiFi and 4G off until I need it, then just enable them.
I recommend using a Notification 4G toggle if you have a custom rom or a 4G desktop toggle if you run stock.
3G is plenty fast for background email syncs and updates.
3: 4G is hit and miss. Sometimes the phone will get stuck in NO DATA at all when it tries to switch in and out of 4G service. It isn't reliable enough to really screw with 24/7 and the gains mean jack if your device is dead.

I have an interesting issue. My wife and I both have Note II's. I have a grey one, she has a white one. Both are on the latest Stock Rom and rooted, same kernel and modem revisions. Both phones on the dreaded 2000 PRL (Havent got around to flashing another one because we have an Airave 2.5)
My phone will not connect to 3g at all when I have LTE enabled. The other phone connects to 3G just fine with LTE enabled.
I have another friend that only sporadically connects to 3g with LTE enabled. If I set the phones that wont stay connected to 3G to CDMA mode everything is fine.
Any ideas?
Try automatic?

The only way to get 3g when lte is enabled is when you lose lte sinal is you just want to use 3g set it to cdam mode only if you set it to lte

Cdma only or global
I was reading some other sites and threads after I encountered a problem almost just like this because I had switched my signal type while on AOSP.
I discovered that because our phone are global they have different connection setting and in short when you switch to either global mode or CDMA only, and try to go back to lte evdo the phone will roam constantly and will not be able to reconnect to lte. So while I was trying to fix my LTE I managed to force my LTE on but I wasnt getting any cdma or evdo. finally I got everything back to normal by flashing a back to stock rom and doing a hands free activation.
I'm also have an overwhelming time with 3g. I have no lte in my area but have tried both CDMA only and CDMA/let settings. My 3g is on and off within 1 minute intervals or hours at a time. I pretty much have no data connection 95% of the day, until I get home from work and can hit WiFi.
I'm just stock rooted on MC2 and also on prl 2000.
I've been on the phone with sprint for days trying to figure this out or get them to waive my ETF. I refuse to keep paying for service when I am not getting any. It's bad enough they don't have 4G much less LTE here, but I can't continue to do these sub par dialup speeds to no speeds.
Any other tips to try would be greatly appreciated. As sprint says everything is fine in my area...
Go figure.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, same problem here. Somehow after rooting the phone i completely lost 4G LTE connectivity. Now everywhere i go it's only on 3G or EvDo Rev-8 which sucks. I think the only way of fixing toys issue is to Unroot and go back to stock ROM.
After doing a lot of research on the matter that is the only solution right now to our 4G LTE catastrophe.
