Pinephone Retail Release Phone - Device Reviews and Information

Since I couldn't find a post up for the model and I'll likely be putting up a look at it once I get it in. And hacking away at the OS load-out! The modifications of which it'd be nice to post somewhere with a community interested in small device OS's.
I'm excited to develop on the Pinephone Braveheart edition soon and have one on pre-order. It's going to be a bring-your-own OS linux based phone and, with any luck, will fit the bill for those of us who want a phone you can hack your own kernel on (me, certainly!).
My take on it, from the hardware, is that it'll be a capable run-of-the-mill phone but with an out-sized capacity for modification and software load-out. About the only thing I'm non-plussed by is the Mali 400 MP2 graphics which are a bit long in the tooth at this point. Although that's probably down to the Allwinner A64 CPU.
Looking at it there's mainline support for OpenGL on the 400 MP2. So that might be a decent choice in regards to being able to roll your own OS.
Another part I'm not clear on is the use of the Allwinner A64 restricting the OS load-out. Since the A64 isn't completely supported in-kernel
Spec's from the manufacturer (Pine):
Allwinner A64 Quad Core SoC with Mali 400 MP2 GPU
2GB of LPDDR3 RAM
5.95″ LCD 1440×720, 18:9 aspect ratio (hardened glass)
Bootable Micro SD
16GB eMMC
HD Digital Video Out
USB Type C (Power, Data and Video Out)
Quectel EG-25G with worldwide bands
WiFi: 802.11 b/g/n, single-band, hotspot capable
Bluetooth: 4.0, A2DP
GNSS: GPS, GPS-A, GLONASS
Vibrator
RGB status LED
Selfie and Main camera (2/5Mpx respectively)
Main Camera: Single OV6540, 5MP, 1/4″, LED Flash
Selfie Camera: Single GC2035, 2MP, f/2.8, 1/5″
Sensors: accelerator, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, ambient light
3 External Switches: up down and power
HW switches: LTE/GNSS, WiFi, Microphone, Speaker, Cameras
Samsung J7 form-factor 3000mAh battery
Case is matte black finished plastic
Headphone Jack
There's also good information on the A64 chip set over at the sunxi porting community: over at linux-sunxi (can't post links)
And it looks like Armbian has mainline kernel support for the chipset, based on similar devices from Pine: on the armbian website (can't post links)
So what do you all think? Anyone else interested in these devices?

I actually just heard about the Pinephone. Will it be able to run on the Sprint network in the US?

The pinephone supports the following:
LTE: B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B13, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28, B38, B39, B40, B41
WCDMA: B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, B8, B19
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 (MHz)
You can look up your carrier at frequencycheck.com

The Pinephone should be shipping now, did any of you get it? I'm considering getting it if my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 no longer works. It's one of those things that's really cool, but only Linux users would likely buy. The specs also aren't the best compared to phones at the same price, but maybe the leanness of Linux would make it feel snappier than other Android devices.

I have it and the development is really active. If you can I suggest you to take it (pmOS is sold out so expect for next edition)

Porting Android To Non-htc Smartphones Can It Be Done???

Well I like the HTC manufactured sony ericsson xperia X1 but I really LOVE THE SAMSUNG I900 OMNIA!!!!!
Is it possible to port android to any windows mobile device with these specs???:
Network: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE + HSDPA 7.2Mbps
Wireless: stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), WiFi
Display: 3.2-inch WQVGA (240×400 pixels) touchscreen
Camera: 5 megapixels with auto-focus, featuring face and smile detection as well as auto-panorama shots
OS/UI: Windows Mobile 6.1 with Samsung's widget-friendly TouchWiz user interface running on top of it
CPU: Marvell 624MHz (*update*)
Other: built-in GPS, accelerometer for auto-rotation, optical mouse
Two models will be sold: 8GB and 16GB, that can further be expanded with microSD memory cards
what makes HTC phones different in terms of running android??? isn't samsung in the android alliance with google??
Samsung is also with the LiMo solutions. I agree, the Samsung OMNIA looks real good. I have the SCH-i760 and it is acting up big time and I am not getting my calls from my Doctors or Nurses so it's bad.

802.11n WiFi driver for BCM4329 chip?

Looking through the teardown from iFixit.com, the EVO has the same Wifi/Bluetooth chip as the Nexus 1 and Droid Incredible: BCM4329
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC-Evo-4G-Teardown/2979/2
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-One-Teardown/1654/2
http://www.broadcom.com/products/Bluetooth/Bluetooth-RF-Silicon-and-Software-Solutions/BCM4329
Anyone with the skills to get an 802.11n driver hacked in?
Saw this Android Open Source :
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg09253.html
Linux WLAN driver for BCM4329 - Low-Power 802.11n with Bluetooth(R)
2.1+ EDR and FM (Tx and Rx)
And this from Android open source project:
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=pl...c;hb=f427424c414886903e4ad654c143c8ce6ec10e3c
Froyo has it, Nexus one users who updated to froyo already enjoy N although some say the difference in speed is very minimal.
if you are anywhere near your router, wireless g is tons faster than your router-net connection will be, most likely. so, going faster to the router isn't going to make much difference if it bottlenecks at the router.
where you may see increases would be in a WLAN, if everything is configured to N-band. otherwise, if you are accessing a 802.11g device on your network, that's the slow man in your transmission, and it won't matter, again.
What about range (which is a problem for the EVO)
It may only be that the router is better, or it may be that 5GHz is better (I know the new iphone only does N on 2.4Ghz, I'm not sure about the EVO) but I know with my airport extreme the range is better to my MacBook, and that in general other N routers have better range to N devices.
This should answer your questions:
BCM4329 - Low-Power 802.11n with Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR and FM (Tx and Rx)
The Broadcom BCM4329 integrates a complete IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n system (MAC/baseband/radio) with Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), and FM radio receiver and transmitter. In addition to bringing greater Wi-Fi throughput and coverage to mobile consumer electronics, the BCM4329 is Broadcom's smallest and lowest cost dual-band 802.11n solution. It features integrated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WLAN CMOS power amplifiers, which reduce BoM costs while maintaining superior performance. The BCM4329 also utilizes advanced design techniques and process technologies to reduce active and idle power consumption and extend battery life.
With wifi-N working, you will get the benefits of dual band.

i would like to see new Windows phone 7 come out with This specs
it Will be amazing
maybe for Mango update to the end of year
I will transfer my LG Optimus 7 to a family member of choice, and acquire whatever LG or Samsung come up with that has the same build quality as my current phone, with better screen of course (and better camera) along that dual-core goodness...Here is hoping the Storage and Memory will increase too...(something along the lines of 32GB storage with 1GB RAM and a 100mm screen (3.94 inch) will be awesome).

Dunno.......it most probably will have because an older phone from spice - mi410 had one....
--------------------
I didn't find the COMPLETE specs anywhere on the web......we'll have to wait for spice to start the sales or gsm arena to post the complete specs!!
Spice Mi-500 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz Dual-Core processor. It is even not clear whether it has a LED flash. Comes with ICS out of the box.
wowee
Seems more likely to have the MSM8225 at this price point.
The Mi-500 is said to have a Snapdragon S4 processor.
It has Cortex A5 dual core and Adreno 203 Graphics processor, which if you go by the numbering system of Qualcom, it will be less powerful then the Adreno 205.
I seriously hope not. I am so looking forward to this mobile.
And the screen resolution is definitely going to be 800x480.
Well lets see upon the release of the product in the market
is it a rebranded chineese
does any one know its oem i guess it is a rebranded chinese phone as always.
I was interested to hear about the dual core CPU on the Mi-500. But there is a lot of repeated articles around the net, most are cut n paste from each other and lacking the same information.
The only say 3G, I have not been able to find what bands it supports. If it is only 2100 then its not much better than the four variants of chinese/korean 5" phones (mtk6575 1Ghz, single core based) around the market (ebay & internet stores). Superior CPU, inferior camera.
Notable points,
No LED flash, No auto focus, a step down in feature from their smaller screened Mi-425
CPU Dual core Snapdragon 1Ghz
GPU 300Mhz
RAM 512 (1g would have been nicer to go with the dual core)
3G? HSPA likely
Dual Sim, guessing this will be a 2G only slot and a 3G/2G slot
It seems this brand is aimed solely at the Indian market, so getting one elsewhere might be difficult (only found one Spice brand ph on ebay as an indication)
I would really like dual sim in a 5" phone, But to suit Australia 3G 850/900/2100 would be best, might have to wait 6 months, or forgo dual sim and go for a galaxy note.
I've never liked the small screens on smartphones, its only the new 5" versions that make me consider changing from carrying an old 2G only phone & laptop.
(i found some of the extra info in a thread titled "First Look Spice Stellar Horizon" -google it)
Found the manufacturers website see (si2imobilityDOTcom), no information posted there, nor could I find information on what 3G bands are supported, I guess the answer is "the Indian ones" Though it does seem likely it is HSPA judging from their other phones

Sorry but what's wrong with
"snapdragon ?? MediaTek ?????"
snapdragon is manufactured by Qualcomm & MT65xx is manufactured by Mediatek...However, Mediatek choose to keep secret for their source code while Qualcomm public part of their source code on-line...
With the source code, developers & ROM cookers at XDA can do wonder with it !
Just stumble upon this video about snapdragon melting butter test...
Hilarious but very true...

Iocean X7S Elite - Real Octa-core phone mini review

Hi
Last seven days i have Iocean X7S Elite phone. I have to say that this device is really great. The most important features of this device are MT6592 1.7GHz Octa-core cpu, 2GB of RAM, Mali 450, FHD screen, Gesture control and 3G WCDMA can work on 900Mhz or 2100Mhz.
Significant technical specs
MT6592 1.7GHz Octa-core cpu
Mali 450 gpu
2GB of Ram
Screen: 5.0 inch, 1920X1080 pixels FHD screen, 443PPI
Network: WCDMA+GSM
Band: 2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
3G: WCDMA 2100MHz/900MHz
Gesture control
If you will be interested you can see here the full review for Iocean X7S
As for the design, I have a model in black and white combination. but it is possible to buy it in a completely black color. The case is made of good quality plastic.
This is how it looks
The screen is 5 inch big with resoulution of 1920X1080 pixels. It is Full HD screen or FHD. I have to say that the screen is brilliant. Color rendition is excellent, and also have an excellent viewing angle. therefore I do not have some objections for the screen.
This V8 beast have MT6592 1.7GHz octa core cpu + 2GB Ram + Mali 450 = win+win combination. It is really good combination, all applications that I have tried, it worked flawlessly. If you do not have too many installed apps, then there will always be freely around 1.3GB of ram.
Iocean X7S Elite scored 27200 points in antutu benchmark app. You can see screenshot below.
Also you can see the Vellamo Mobile Benchmark results :good:
All certainly wondering how GPS works on Iocean X7S ? Gps works great, I'm also pleasantly surprised because without wifi and network connection and without any fixes, gps works great with no problems.
I also want to say something about Gesture control function. It is really cool function which works good and that can be very useful. For now you can use it only for basic functions such as going through menu, etc.
Thank you
About the video quality you can see below examples:
And here you can see how Iocean X7S plays movies, in this example is Star Trek Ds9 fight :victory:
Great Review! thank you- I am happy to ee that they have fixed the GPS problem from MTK6589 version..
I am thinking to buy the MTK6582 version.

Yes, they fixed the problem. Now gps is working good.
What rom you have?
what rom u have
what rom u have
How would you compare it to Neken N6S?
What is the pricing of iOcean X7S Elite?
N6S has practically same specs as X7S, no bloatware, standard android no candy like MIUI, around $220 + shipping + tax.
Can you post more GPS screenshots and first fix times? Of course no WiFi, somewhere outside in the open.
What is the battery endurance? I guess it's going to be around the same for all MT6592 devices.
Hi,
There is stock rom on the device. Gps works good in the same way without sim card and Wifi
I checked it out. Looks really nice
I have the x7s one month now.
I cannot say I have found any single issue yet. The phone rocks and also with open wifi all day and normal use on calls the small battery lasts easily for the day.
It was much worse during the first days but after a week the battery started performing better.
gps locks in no time, the screen is ultra sharp in colours and the phone is very light overall
