This is a software limitation. The processor and modem are supported. Therefore, I ask.

This phone is advertised as a flagship killer not as a flagship one, so some limitations in hardware and software are normal. Xiaomi does not wanna really kill their flagship phones, obviously

Processor and modem are not the only components that can bring support to a certain feature. Maybe the F3 is lacking RF front ends with TWS+ support? Maybe the F3 doesn't have enough antennas for TWS+ support? I don't know the exact reason why the F3 doesn't have TWS+ support but these are my guesses.

Kind of absurd though since Poco F2 Pro supported aptx tws+, even the Mi 10t which I would consider in the same mid-flagship-bracket.
Edit*
Even the older Mi 9t supports tws+ lol

I received today my Haylou Gt1 XR, which supports aptx tws+, and it is only detected as "aptX" on bluetooth.
One earbud is draining faster as it does not utilize the independent master-slave...
I wonder if there's any chance that Poco will add it
There's an option in developer settings. Just try to force it. Maybe the device default(auto) setting has problems.

Is it working on your end (aptX TWS+)?
I already tried every option in that and most is not changing (reverting if I closed developer's option), I'm guessing because the codec is not supported by either my Poco F3 or the wireless buds.
What's working on this list is SBC, AAC, and aptX audio. The TWS+ does not work (though it should be as it's in the product description, and I've seen a Mi 10t with my same buds use it).

Probably not, Redmi K40 users in China asked for TWS+ support but Xiaomi didn't add the feature. Yeah still ****ed that the 9T and 10T supports it while the F3 doesn't. Who knows why it isn't supported.

Forcing it doesn't work, the option is there but the codec isn't there. The lack of TWS+ is confirmed by Xiaomi too.

If it's a software limitation, can custom roms support TWS+?
Has anyone here tried TWS+ earphones on custom roms?

Not sure, no idea how aptX works in custom ROMs. But I still feel like it's a hardware limitation, afterall why would the previous phones support it while the F3 doesn't?
I am currently waiting for my poco f3 to arrive. Upgrading from the legendary f1 btw. My f1 (pixel exp+ rom) supports aptx tws+. I am also using the haylou gt1 xr. It is shame to know that f3 does not support tws+ (for now?).
tested F3 with SOny WF-1000XM3 it does show aptx HD on bluetooth menu, but not quite sure it produce the quality of aptxHD, (not much different form regular tws)
so instead using tws i choose to use mu usb c dac (ibasso DC03)

Try forcing SBC or standard aptX codec in dev settings and see if it sounds worse than aptX HD. Btw do you think the audio through your DAC sounds better than the standard audio adapter provided in the box?

offcourse it's better that standard converter, if you never use external dac...then probably what i'm saying.. you wouldn't understand. as in audio adapter from xiaomi just converter that it nothing more
even on cheapest dac available on market still produce better audio quality
the different with ibasso dc03 you'll get clearer sound, way more detailed sound & on some bass also stroenger (depend on music style)
out there also other usb c dac such as Hidizs S9, AK (Astell & Kern), Shanling UA series, etc the first 2 (Hidizs & AK) i've tested those & it give me even better detail than ibasso.
as for SBC... on my ear this produce the same as non tws (standard usb converter to 3,5mm), also dev opt setting that doesn't do much when try to set on tws (both apthd or sbc)
1 thing that still can't tested it (more kind of i don't own the tws) is LDAC set on dev opt...maybe later when i somehow own WF-1000XM4
note: i use CIEM (Avara Neo) when i play music, also my music file is both Flac & Mp3 320KBPS, also when i tested using IEM that have mic control builtin...the audio quality not much good compare to non mic IEM

I was considering buying a cheap DAC with a ALC5686 to try, but haven't bought it as I wasn't sure if external DACs would work and sound better on the F3, thanks for confirming.
But does using ext DACs still allow you to use Mi Sound eq?
Your ibasso has like a really good Cirrus logic chip so it's quite expensive.. audiophile gear is crazy.

no... don't use Mi Sound EQ..it will literally ruin your music sound, as for me i use spotify with no eq..just running default sound (or if you insist using eq, use bulit in spotify). Hiby (free) & Onkyo HF Player (Paid) (if you want to enjoy usb output/dac )
i got my ibasso on not so expensive ones form lokal online shop (indonesia-tokopedia) at price of IDR 850.000 ( +- $56,7 ) compare to hidizs & AK both of them cost +- $120
i also have small/compact usb dac with realtek 5686 (i think it's same as your plan ALC 5686) (price only +-$5) that also confirmed working on F3 & it give me boost 40% volume, actually most usb dac will work if the phone support usb otg & some of dac are require the phone to be non without 3,5mm jack...
if by any chance you buy usb dac, 1 thing you'll notice is the volume. for exp: on normal/standar dongle you maybe use say...75% volume, then plug any dac it will make use only around 25-40% of your normal volume (depend on the dac you use).
usb dac give a lot advantage regarding music listening, but not all dac support phone call/remote IEM (my ibasso dc03 doesn't supoort for call at all)
that's where TWS came... some tws support high res audio & still have full support for phone call.

I don't use eq for headphones, I want to use it for a specific purpose. I actually used to have a DAC with a conexant chip and supposedly it should work on my old Mi 5s Plus but it didn't, so I was skeptical when I wanted to buy one for my F3. But now I did some research and found out the conexant chip in that DAC is apparently mediocre so I chose one with the realtek chip this time.
How does your DAC with realtek 5686 compare to your ibasso? The one i'm looking at is probably same as yours, no cables just like a oversized plug.
The ibasso is expensive for me now, might look into it if a DAC makes an audible difference to me. Thanks for the all suggestions.

Realtek 5686 gives boost on volume from what used when just dongle on 75% to only 25-30% (depend on the music) not much else produce on this tiny dac dongle (yep oversized plug) a very smal detail came up, it has bass boost but not much.
ibasso dc03 volume well some improvement from realtek (mine jcally brand) also it has standallone apps (for hardware volume control only) but the diferent came on detail, ibasso/hidizs/AK produce way more detail, i used clip form youttube ACDC - Thunderstruck (live version) in this video the different between jcally vs ibasso etc is a lot, especially the detail.
since i already like SQL a long time ago, that reason why i decidec to have usb dac (other that the fact still found the best tws for my ear)
as for dac compability, i can asure that even on old RN9P (this still has 3,5mm jack) i can used those dac perfectly & the sound is way much better than 3,5mm itself
it's all came back to what you want, if you want simplicity the go tws...there are many high quality tws (xiaomi/redmi tws not so much...not that good sound based on my ear, better be looking for 1more), or if your little complicated (wired stuff) the you can go usb dac.
Note: if you just want to hear lil bit clearer or louder music use that tiny dongle relatek dac (any brand that cheap).
even now i still find it hard for android to play my DSD or FLAC at their highest spec (since android by deafult lock output on 16Bit/44.1KHz.... this where the dac came (preferably normal dac/amp with usb c connector) but the limitation goes into android apps, as not much out there that support high res
known apps for high res player:
USB Audio Player, Onkyo HF Music, AIMP, Foobar 2000, Hiby, Tidal (must subscribe & mostly need vpn to use it)
