I am not sure if you guys know that you can now connect to WiFi and get better phone service. These new phones are called WiFi phones.
I was just wondering if there is a way to get the Dash to be a WiFi phone because I tend to get poor service in my area. Thank you.
wat do u mean wifi phones
Like phones that are able to connect to wifi and speak over wifi, for example instead of connecting to a tower you can connect to your wireless router and the router will act as a tower.
isnt that just SIP? like VIOP? is that what you are talking about?

Swaney no offense dude but you are a bozo! I'm contributing to the fact by posting this but I have to enlighten you. Do me a favor and look at your last 10-12 posts and ask yourself if any of them are relevant or helpful. Instead of adding more work to the mods just think about what your posting please. Your killing me brother.

Rogers here in Canada offers it on certain phones. They call it Talkspot. You can use your cell phone normally but then when at home you use your wifi network to make and take calls that don't count against you minutes. currently here it is only compatable with 2 phones. BB Pearl and Nokia 6086. You could also just use somthing like Skype on you phone.

3 do one via Skype http://www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/skype_phone.omp
BT do it that allows you to have an internet no. and if @ connected via a HUB\Router you can recieve and make calls via internet, the only problem is can't use it with WM6.1 since the software is not compatable.
Yah I know the Pearl does it because I work at tmobile, but what I was mainly wondering was if there was like a third party application program that would allow the dash to do it since it already has the wifi built in...

i know exactly what your talking about and to answer your question no you cant use the dash as a wifi phone t-mobile offers that service here in NYC where i live its called "T-Mobile " ive had that service setup at my house. they send you a router and a phone and you pretty much use use your cell phone like a house phone with unlimited call to anywhere in the USA and Canada for a flat rate of 20 dollors a month. its like you said you use your mobile phone to connect to your router via wifi and you get good signal strength and you can take your phone to any Hotspot places (e.x Starbucks) and use your phone. but your limited to how far you can walk away from your router. anyways make a long story short.. when i was ordering the service they asked me what kinda phone i would like and they offered me some crappy Nokia flip phone and offered me the blackberry curve. i told them well i have the TMO dash that can also run on wifi and they told me the dash cant be used as a wifi phone i was pretty much pissed cause i had to pay for a new phone. well sorry for the long story but no the dash was not built to be used for that.

Hi guys!
So, AFTER agreeing to buy a T-Mobile TP2 for use up here in Montreal on Rogers, I have now learned that it won't work on Roger's 3G band. Brutal! I thought buying the US T Mobile version would be okay.
Oh well.
Now, I have a real-world usage question, for those of you using this device on the ATT/Rogers network...
Just how bad (or good!) is the speed? I really would love a straight answer here, and I think others would, too.
With my AT&T FUZE, the phone typically jumps from H to 3G; but mostly 3G. Nonetheless, surfing is really hit & miss. Sometimes I will wait soooo long for a message with a 1MB attachment to arrive, but other times, it's pretty quick.
I do like to tether my laptop to the device quite frequently, and when I download a file using Internet Explorer, I will get about 100Kb/s, right up to 250Kb/s. I think I once saw 300KB/S while downloading a large file, but it was rare.
I do get faster throughput when I tether via USB and not though bluetooth, of course.
So, my bottom line question is... If you see a 10MB file that you wish to download while tethering, and you are an AT&T or Rogers user using a T-Mobile version of the phone, then just how good or bad is the transfer rate?
I am really looking for some real-world examples, nothing theoretical.
After all, according to Rogers, their 3G HSDPA network is supposed to support 7.2Mbit/s, but give me a break. File, Save As, has never been that thrilling when I tether with my FUZE. And as I mentioned, could sit forever downloading certain emails, EVEN when I see the 3G logo!
So really, please share your bottom line experience with me... Tethering and/or surfing and downloading attachments with the device.
I know plenty of you are on AT&T and Rogers with a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2, unable to use 3G.
Are you guys dying to give it back, or is it pretty darn decent?
Honest answers would be really appreciated!
Thanks!
No matter what, since you got the TmoUSA version, you're stuck with Edge speeds since it doesn't work on AT&Ts 3G bands.
if you don't like Edge, return the phone & wait for AT&T or Rogers to release it.
/thread
Hi!
I know I am stuck with EDGE speeds, I just wonder what that really means.
The good news is that the seller gave me until tomorrow to back out, with no problem at all.
So, part of me is saying, "BACK OUT! WAIT FOR THE AT&T VERSION WHICH WILL BE OUT SOON!!", but another part is wondering... Hmm... just how slow is the EDGE version after all?
I am anxious for a new phone. (And I already ordered several accessories! )
So, I just really want to know how 'bad' or 'slow' EDGE really is!
I have 24 hours to back out of the purchase! That's why I am posting here...
I paid $415.00 for a locked version. Add a few bucks to unlock it, and it's no real steal.
I wonder just how slow EDGE is, that's all! Let's see what others have to say!
Thanks again!
well if you do stick with it, I only tethered with Edge once or twice & it was unbearable for what i was doing. If you want to use the net though, I suggest getting Opera Mini or trying Opera Mobile 9.7 with the Turbo mode. This will make browsing faster.
here's for Opera Mini & the Jbed Java manager:

Wow.
If you say that tethering with EDGE is unbearable, then forget it!
I will not buy the phone, and wait for the AT&T version.
Hopefully a few others will pipe in with some info overnight!
Looks like I think I will cancel the sale.. let's see what anyone else says. Thanks as always!

Without going into any technical jargon EDGE is slow and on most networks real world average speeds are between 70 to 150 if lucky. When I was with ATT I used to get anywhere from 1.5Mb to 2.1.
The difference is clear. The rumour mill has it that ATT will release their version of TP2 in October. I'd return that baby and hang in there.
On a personal note: I ditched ATT to T-Mob to get the TP2. For the first time in years I'm able to watch youtube videos with little to no buffering. Also my Slingplayer no longer stutters when in control mode.
Not a lot of word out about AT&T's version lately.
It's worth noting that there have been a lot of news stories in the past week about AT&T's network not being able to handle the load of iPhone data and being very slow.
Another thing to remember here is that AT&T doesn't necessarily mean CDMA+GSM world phone .... you may be looking at the original GSM TP2 device here, with no 3.5mm jack if/when AT&T releases theirs
On a personal note: I ditched ATT to T-Mob to get the TP2. For the first time in years I'm able to watch youtube videos with little to no buffering. Also my Slingplayer no longer stutters when in control mode.
I agree with this! I'm using TMO this time around and I love the speed for both YouTube and my Slingplayer.
I'm guessing it's too late now but it really depends on your area. You should have taken your TP2 and tested it whilst in Montreal. Different carriers give different EDGE speeds, just like different carriers give different 3G speeds. Some people get easily over 200kbps. In which case it'd be like early broadband. But yeah, just because someone in Florida gets great speeds and someone in Seattle (random examples unrelated to reported performance or anything like that) gets horrible speeds doesn't mean that your experience will reflect either one.
Oh, and comments on ATT's capabilities to handle the traffic are irrelevant here as the OP is talking about Roger's network in Montreal.
Hi guys,
Thanks to the posts so far, my choice is clear!
I will use my FUZE for the next month or so, and await the AT&T version. It would be the height of impatience for me to buy an EDGE phone, knowing that a 3G version is just around the corner.
Also, based on the pics I have seen online, another HUGE plus on the AT&T version (IF the pics are legit), is that the top row of buttons is like the FUZE... ! @ # $ % ( ), as opposed to a row of numbers. The numbers on the AT&T TP2 are in a keypad formation, which I like more.
And as for the top row of keys, I LOVE LOVE LOVE having symbols there, accessible without hitting the shift key. (IF the spy photos are true).
I cancelled the order!
The only pain in the ass is that I already ordered two cradles, 5 clear screen protectors, 5 mirrored screen protectors, 5 extra magnetic styli, 3 batteries, 2 chargers, and god knows what else! So now I have to STARE at these accessories for a month or two, until I get the AT&T version. What a tease!
Thanks for all your help!
Well, at least the ATT version version seems to be the standard build/body unlike the Tmo version which is slightly longer. That means that the accessories should fit it without any big problems (you'll have a hole for the camera that isn't on the ATT version according to the pics, but hey).
Just set your FUZE to 2G EDGE only and see how it is for yourself.

Yes, I thought about doing that, but I wasn't sure how to definitively set this up. Despite many years of purchasing, upgrading, flashing, cooking, and tweaking these devices, I am still a little unsure how to definitively go into each of the various modes/bands (2G/2.5G/3G) and whether or not it would be an accurate test/assessment.
I figured it would be best to get people's advice who have actually tried tethering while on AT&T and Rogers.
Settings>Phone>Band>Select Network>GSM (or something like that)
I did the same mistake.. I bought the Telus version and unlocked it. I thought that I can live without the 3G because I don't browse much. I later realised that the EDGE speed isn't enough for the music streaming I usually do. I really love the phone but I'm thinking about selling it.. I bearly used it for a couple hours and put it back in its box. Still unsure of what I'm gonna do. But my guess is if your lucky enough to be able to back out, send it back. I had to pay $500 + $25 for unlocking. Probably not gonna sell for that much and I only got to enjoy it for an hour or too
Edit: BTW the EDGE speeds ranged from 150-230 kbits/sec which is about 20-30 KB/s when downloading compared to 350-400KB/s when downloading on my Diamond on 3G.

WOW, that is exactly the answer I was looking for (or should I say, NOT looking for!)
Sorry to hear about your situation. Not cool, of course.
I did get my money back and was able to back out, no questions asked.
Downloaded at 30 KB/s is brutal. I know you are not the only one to make this mistake.
All I know is that I hope Rogers/AT&T really come out with their own version... because otherwise, I'll have tons of accessories to sell!!

Lol yeah I hope a 3G version does come out. I use the pro2 from time to time I love the RAM, keyboard and screen side of the phone but when I'm fed up with EDGE I use the Diamond. I must say though that if you need 3G for browsing primarily, the speeds are good enough especially on Opera (thumbs up for Opera). When it comes to streaming its so so..
I say if you can hold back, wait for a 3G version so you dont regret anything.
Good luck buddy.

Per this article, folks at "Mashable" uncovered a working cell phone with a T-Mobile sim in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly meant to be a high-tech ad for the CW displaying live Tweets and crap like that. I was wondering if the inner parts were combined with another cheapo ABO Android phone, if this could be a working cell phone with 3G data and all? Or, if one could simply remove the T-Mobile sim and stick it in their GSM Nexus if they'd get working data/calls?
There are 1000 copies of the magazine scattered around LA and NY. I might try to search for one tomorrow when I'm in the city. If anyone sees one, picks it up, and sticks the sim in their GNex, let me know how it goes. Who knows how long the sim would be good for, or if it'll even work, but it might be worth trying, no?

it's a funny idea. i'll try to bring one for me!
Did you read the original Mashable article? You CAN make phone calls and use data on it. It's a real smartphone
It's probably using a prepaid TMo SIM with a month's worth of credit in it.
The 2 people in the Mashable vid were horrible! I was so angry listening to them talk.
It was only sent to subscribers, in the only two cities that "really matter", New York City and Los Angeles. Same as it was for that Esquire magazine e-ink cover and the CNN video ad which used a simple video player device with a small screen.
The CNN one was quickly hacked to play other videos. Wasn't much to do with the Esquire cover since it was made of fixed elements like a cheap LCD game toy.
The phone appears to be the guts of an Abo 810. Pretty junky little phone but what? It supports JAVA apps?
Why can't I have that on my Epic 4g? Would be nice to remotely access my printer's built in server from my phone but I can't because the phone OS built on JAVA doesn't have a full JRE, but apparently the Chinese came up with one.
I doubt much will be done with hacking those magazine phones with only 1,000 of them out there and likely the majority of them will get tossed in the trash within the next week or two.

Which model? A few Tab 3's are voice capable (without flashing), as is the international Note 8.

I don't know much about this device even though I own one.
There's no normally placed earpiece so I can't imagine using it as a phone, hell, a tablet would look pretty stupid held to my face - which reminds me, no proximity sensor in it....
Revert back to 2.2? This device comes with 4.2 out of the box. No way to downgrade versions that I can see.

I got rid of my phone service a long time ago and just use voip now on with my samsung note with the tmobile 5gb $30 plan, but i switched over to att for this tablet and have been using it with voip with no problems call quality is excellent, speakerphone is crystal clear but i like using my headphones i use grooveip so all my calls to all phones in the us is free. this thing makes a great phone. but knowing that the hardware is there it would be nice to just enable it and have the regular android dialer, the reason i said to revert it to 2.2 was because people have been doing that to enable the specific gsm frequency radio hardware on certain devices.
I think you are not really understanding what we are talking about, true it does not have a built in earpiece like a traditional phone, but it does have bluetooth for a headset and it does have a headphone jack for headphones and speakers for speakerphone and it has the gsm radio hardware for it, im using it right now as my phone using voip with att 4g network and it works great, someone calls my USA telephone number from a phone and my tablet rings, i answer and it works great as a phone..... but it would also be nice to have the regular gsm phone service active on it as a back up and for texting. and 911 so yes it works great as a phone now. we were just trying to flash it to enable the gsm radio
So you are not being helpful at all. because you dont seem to have knowledge regarding the issues we are referring to, and correct you would not hold it to your head because it has no earpiece but that does not matter and also it might look ridiculous to you but others might not really give a sh** what people think.
so to simplify even more , why dont you just stop discouraging people from trying to make things better
Im with @mentalmike99 on this if your not trying to further the discussion in a positive way no need to post. as for Groove IP I never could get it set right to work correctly so I use Zoiper or OBiON with my G-Voice # and they both work great. As far as sms use the G-Voice app or Hangout's now does sms as well. Just an Idea for you to look into for sms.
Hope we can get this figured out. You couldn't use that $30 5GB T-Mo plan on the AT&T GTAB 3 if it were unlocked? If not is the plan tied to the imei & not the Sim card? I was thinking about going to that plan is why I am asking. Thanks
I am using tablet voice with my Google voice number. It works, but I'm not real impressed with it. I only use it on speaker. Having the full on phone active would be a he he plus for me as well, but I'm wondering if its going to happen because of the bootloader being locked still. I can't really speculate about the older tabs because I didn't have one, but I thought the hardware was there and just needed to have a modem fw flashed to enable it. It seems like the ATT version is going to be uncharted territory for a while, but I'm hopeful...

the tmobile plan is awsome but i had to change to ATT because tmobile's cell tower is messed up in my home area so i havent been able to get data for like 2 months here so i finally had to give up on them. trust me i would have loved to stay with them cause i think ATT really sucks, good service technically but price wise no way!. thanks for the info on the other voip services because grooveip works good but it keeps loosing the incoming connection so i sometimes cant receive calls unless i exit and restart the program
As for using it on Tmobiles network, i dont think it would be a problem as long as Tmobile had "refarmed" their tower in your area to the LTE freq. if not then I believe you can only get 2g , not sure on all of that.
Just so you know you will need to get a new tmobile sim from walmart or at least tell them you got it from walmart to activate on the $30 plan.
i really hope we can get the phone part going cause thats the only thinkg i miss about using my samsung note

I bought 4 sims Directly from T-Mobile awhile back well actually I didn't "BUY" them they were free. All I read about it was that you have to Activate online to get that plan which is not an issue for me cause that's all I do is Activate Customers online all day long its just thru my dealer portals lol I guess its kinda different but don't tell anyone shh lol kinding anyway well thats good to know that it should work & sorry to hear about ur tower issue. The coverage map says they have "4G" in my area & people that have stopped buy with T-Mobile 4G enabled phones get 4G here & some of the T-Mo MVNO's I sell get 4G so I think im good to go on that front unless they are selling hspa+ as 4G still then I may b alittle disappointed idk we will see.
So what is the "UNLOCKED" comment about? was that about the Bootloader or Sim Part? If you want a Good site to get SIP info for G-Voice that will work in any SIP App let me know I'll point u toward a site that u can get it free I gave a "donation" & got the GSM band but you can use other bands I didn't see a difference honestly I just think DEV's & Other that do stuff like need paid for their HARD WORK they put in. Diff topic all together I know
Locked is for boot loader, meaning if there are any packages/firmware that needs to be flashed the ATT people may be out of luck. Sprint on the other hand is not boot loader locked. Sim unlocked is something else, mainly moving to a different provider with existing equipment.

Ok so I got to wondering if it is possible to use this as a phone. Im not a programmer but I went into the Build.prop file & it looks like the phone part of this device is enabled. I took a screen shot & put some red arrows by what I am talking about. I don't have any clue if those help or mean anything but I would think that phone enabled is a good sign.

Why not?
I use this tablet primarily for voice calls, sms texts, net surf, games, etc etc just like normal android phones out there.
got earpiece at the topside (chrome holes thingy), so when making voice calls, we don't need to use external speakers, just hold it just like normal phones do. It also got proximity sensor.
mine is tab 3 7.0 model t211, GSM HSPA, 16gb.
got to admit tho, earpiece voice not loud, had trouble hearing especially at crowded and noisy places.
looks weird placing voice calls with this huge thing, everyone is looking at me lol.
NO Ear Speaker on a T211 that I know of Included link also

I don't know how to edit the info up top I stand Corrected before you chew into my A**.
Is that the International Version? I did a search on it & didn't see the Speaker till after I put my post up then I seen this pic on phone arena & I see the 1 with the speaker ur talking about but haven't seen it anywhere for sale I don't believe. Where did u get it & what carrier is for? AT&T?
Most of us are using bluetooth or wired headsets & using our Google Voice with 1 of many app's & ways to use the setup. I personally have 3 diff apps I on my tab that I could use at anytime but none of them are a "Great" or "Perfect" solution to a stock dialer setup like a normal phone. I'm willing to pay a little bit & help with whatever I can to get this done. If theres a dev out there that wants to look into this & uses hangouts hit me up at snyderswireless if you need a file pulled from the tab or whatever. It would be nice to have a stock dialer that we could use.
I know i'm thinking about getting rid of this tab & getting either a Note 8(for the Phone) or Nexus 7(leaning toward this) on T-Mo but haven't made up my mind yet on what I want to do.
the OP original question is IF he buys the tab3, then will phone/mms work.
and the answer is "depends" on which model he buys.
Some work right out of the box with your existing sim out of your smart phone.
Some wont.. rule of thumb would be the price point.. and the screenshot of the device..
I say if its close to 300$ and higher, it may have the capabilities built in..
cheaper tab3's, (and if the phone icon) doesnt show on the home screen..May or May not.
We should start to list the models we have and let him know what we do to get them to do what he wants..
Tab3 - 8" T-315 international version. Phone/data/mms are built in from the get go. just take the sim out of my smartphone and stick it in the tab.

I bought it here :

that's our local online store, trusted. i say, local only.
here's the pictures i snapped for your reference
and yes, it's basically a cell phone, a BIG cell phone, you can place voice calls and texts as normal phones do, runs on WCDMA (HSPA) frequencies, and unlocked, SIM free in Indonesia.
I don't know which frequency AT&T is based on, but this information below might be useful for you.

I love the note 4 but I get one pet peeve. The damn single antenna that prevents me from using the Web when you're on the phone.
This is a major concern for me since I use my phone as part of the home automation. My Gate and Garage is controlled with my phone so if I get to the front of the house and I'm on the phone, I have to get off the phone to get in or get out of the car and use the keypad.
I think this is a MAJOR BS of sprint

It has nothing to do with Antennas..it is the Spark and tri-band that causes this: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Spri...andle-calls-and-data-at-the-same-time_id54789
There are ways around this but it would require further tower upgrades from Sprint.
Yup, all spark phone will be like this. The up side is better faster LTE coverage and better battery life since there is only 1 cell radio operating at a time. It will take VOIP (and a new phone since note 4 doesn't support VOIP) before sprint will provide simultaneous voice and data again. So, if you really need simultaneous voice and data no spark for you!

Yeah its kinda annoying at times... But it's not really a deal breaker. I'll stick with the Note 4. Can't downgrade at this point is how I see it.
I agree. Ofcourse I skipped the note 3 altogether because I wasn't eligible for upgrade at the time it was released and I heard som leaked info about the Note 4 so I decided to wait. I really do miss simultaneous voice & data but I don't talk on my phone for great lengths anyway so it's not that big of a deal to me.
