Which model? A few Tab 3's are voice capable (without flashing), as is the international Note 8.
I'm curious about this as well. I have a t217a for ATT. I was under the impression that the gsm versions were all capable. I know I am boot loader locked...

Could you elaborate on that. Did they remove some of the hardware from the previous version

I havent heard of any development. but if the hardware is capable then i was wondering along with everybody else, could we enable the dialer and use it could it be reverted back to the android 2.2 to enable that part of the radio? do you have any info on this? I know the 8 inch international version has it,

I don't know much about this device even though I own one.
There's no normally placed earpiece so I can't imagine using it as a phone, hell, a tablet would look pretty stupid held to my face - which reminds me, no proximity sensor in it....
Revert back to 2.2? This device comes with 4.2 out of the box. No way to downgrade versions that I can see.

I got rid of my phone service a long time ago and just use voip now on with my samsung note with the tmobile 5gb $30 plan, but i switched over to att for this tablet and have been using it with voip with no problems call quality is excellent, speakerphone is crystal clear but i like using my headphones i use grooveip so all my calls to all phones in the us is free. this thing makes a great phone. but knowing that the hardware is there it would be nice to just enable it and have the regular android dialer, the reason i said to revert it to 2.2 was because people have been doing that to enable the specific gsm frequency radio hardware on certain devices.
I think you are not really understanding what we are talking about, true it does not have a built in earpiece like a traditional phone, but it does have bluetooth for a headset and it does have a headphone jack for headphones and speakers for speakerphone and it has the gsm radio hardware for it, im using it right now as my phone using voip with att 4g network and it works great, someone calls my USA telephone number from a phone and my tablet rings, i answer and it works great as a phone..... but it would also be nice to have the regular gsm phone service active on it as a back up and for texting. and 911 so yes it works great as a phone now. we were just trying to flash it to enable the gsm radio
So you are not being helpful at all. because you dont seem to have knowledge regarding the issues we are referring to, and correct you would not hold it to your head because it has no earpiece but that does not matter and also it might look ridiculous to you but others might not really give a sh** what people think.
so to simplify even more , why dont you just stop discouraging people from trying to make things better
Im with @mentalmike99 on this if your not trying to further the discussion in a positive way no need to post. as for Groove IP I never could get it set right to work correctly so I use Zoiper or OBiON with my G-Voice # and they both work great. As far as sms use the G-Voice app or Hangout's now does sms as well. Just an Idea for you to look into for sms.
Hope we can get this figured out. You couldn't use that $30 5GB T-Mo plan on the AT&T GTAB 3 if it were unlocked? If not is the plan tied to the imei & not the Sim card? I was thinking about going to that plan is why I am asking. Thanks
I am using tablet voice with my Google voice number. It works, but I'm not real impressed with it. I only use it on speaker. Having the full on phone active would be a he he plus for me as well, but I'm wondering if its going to happen because of the bootloader being locked still. I can't really speculate about the older tabs because I didn't have one, but I thought the hardware was there and just needed to have a modem fw flashed to enable it. It seems like the ATT version is going to be uncharted territory for a while, but I'm hopeful...

the tmobile plan is awsome but i had to change to ATT because tmobile's cell tower is messed up in my home area so i havent been able to get data for like 2 months here so i finally had to give up on them. trust me i would have loved to stay with them cause i think ATT really sucks, good service technically but price wise no way!. thanks for the info on the other voip services because grooveip works good but it keeps loosing the incoming connection so i sometimes cant receive calls unless i exit and restart the program
As for using it on Tmobiles network, i dont think it would be a problem as long as Tmobile had "refarmed" their tower in your area to the LTE freq. if not then I believe you can only get 2g , not sure on all of that.
Just so you know you will need to get a new tmobile sim from walmart or at least tell them you got it from walmart to activate on the $30 plan.
i really hope we can get the phone part going cause thats the only thinkg i miss about using my samsung note

I bought 4 sims Directly from T-Mobile awhile back well actually I didn't "BUY" them they were free. All I read about it was that you have to Activate online to get that plan which is not an issue for me cause that's all I do is Activate Customers online all day long its just thru my dealer portals lol I guess its kinda different but don't tell anyone shh lol kinding anyway well thats good to know that it should work & sorry to hear about ur tower issue. The coverage map says they have "4G" in my area & people that have stopped buy with T-Mobile 4G enabled phones get 4G here & some of the T-Mo MVNO's I sell get 4G so I think im good to go on that front unless they are selling hspa+ as 4G still then I may b alittle disappointed idk we will see.
So what is the "UNLOCKED" comment about? was that about the Bootloader or Sim Part? If you want a Good site to get SIP info for G-Voice that will work in any SIP App let me know I'll point u toward a site that u can get it free I gave a "donation" & got the GSM band but you can use other bands I didn't see a difference honestly I just think DEV's & Other that do stuff like need paid for their HARD WORK they put in. Diff topic all together I know
Locked is for boot loader, meaning if there are any packages/firmware that needs to be flashed the ATT people may be out of luck. Sprint on the other hand is not boot loader locked. Sim unlocked is something else, mainly moving to a different provider with existing equipment.

Ok so I got to wondering if it is possible to use this as a phone. Im not a programmer but I went into the Build.prop file & it looks like the phone part of this device is enabled. I took a screen shot & put some red arrows by what I am talking about. I don't have any clue if those help or mean anything but I would think that phone enabled is a good sign.

Why not?
I use this tablet primarily for voice calls, sms texts, net surf, games, etc etc just like normal android phones out there.
got earpiece at the topside (chrome holes thingy), so when making voice calls, we don't need to use external speakers, just hold it just like normal phones do. It also got proximity sensor.
mine is tab 3 7.0 model t211, GSM HSPA, 16gb.
got to admit tho, earpiece voice not loud, had trouble hearing especially at crowded and noisy places.
looks weird placing voice calls with this huge thing, everyone is looking at me lol.
NO Ear Speaker on a T211 that I know of Included link also

I don't know how to edit the info up top I stand Corrected before you chew into my A**.
Is that the International Version? I did a search on it & didn't see the Speaker till after I put my post up then I seen this pic on phone arena & I see the 1 with the speaker ur talking about but haven't seen it anywhere for sale I don't believe. Where did u get it & what carrier is for? AT&T?
Most of us are using bluetooth or wired headsets & using our Google Voice with 1 of many app's & ways to use the setup. I personally have 3 diff apps I on my tab that I could use at anytime but none of them are a "Great" or "Perfect" solution to a stock dialer setup like a normal phone. I'm willing to pay a little bit & help with whatever I can to get this done. If theres a dev out there that wants to look into this & uses hangouts hit me up at snyderswireless if you need a file pulled from the tab or whatever. It would be nice to have a stock dialer that we could use.
I know i'm thinking about getting rid of this tab & getting either a Note 8(for the Phone) or Nexus 7(leaning toward this) on T-Mo but haven't made up my mind yet on what I want to do.
the OP original question is IF he buys the tab3, then will phone/mms work.
and the answer is "depends" on which model he buys.
Some work right out of the box with your existing sim out of your smart phone.
Some wont.. rule of thumb would be the price point.. and the screenshot of the device..
I say if its close to 300$ and higher, it may have the capabilities built in..
cheaper tab3's, (and if the phone icon) doesnt show on the home screen..May or May not.
We should start to list the models we have and let him know what we do to get them to do what he wants..
Tab3 - 8" T-315 international version. Phone/data/mms are built in from the get go. just take the sim out of my smartphone and stick it in the tab.

I bought it here :
Code:

that's our local online store, trusted. i say, local only.
here's the pictures i snapped for your reference
and yes, it's basically a cell phone, a BIG cell phone, you can place voice calls and texts as normal phones do, runs on WCDMA (HSPA) frequencies, and unlocked, SIM free in Indonesia.
I don't know which frequency AT&T is based on, but this information below might be useful for you.

Phone turns on and looks like its brand new except i cant do anything on it (make calls, text, internet) my question is can there be ANY solution to this, or am i just SOL. Its fine if i am, but just figured i could try all options and thats when i stumbled upon this site. Im not asking anyone to do anything for me, just can it be done. Is it "locked" or "blocked" ? If i unlocked it would it work then? Please any help is appreciated

Did AT&T tell you that it's blacklisted, or is that just your assumption? Just trying to make sure it isn't something else like a missing IMEI code.
And if it was stolen, I'd get rid of it if it were me. You can get in a lot of trouble for receiving stolen goods.
At any rate, not here to preach. You can unlock it for free using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34661189#post3466118
That said, if you use a T-Mobile sim card you'll probably only get Edge network, which is slower than dial-up (not really, but it is agonizingly slow). In some areas of the country T-Mobile has rolled out newer networks and you might get H+. Worth a shot at any rate. Good luck. :good:

Chances are, it could be blacklisted on all GSM networks, not just AT&T. All a person would need to do is call up respective customer care, and get it disabled. If he got it for one, I don't think he'd be stupid enough not to get it disabled on other MAJOR networks.
When you got it, didn't you put in your cell sim and check if it was working or not?
So I'll be deploying to Afghanistan soon and I'm wondering if I put my T-Mobile account on hold for the duration, I can just use the WiFi that is on base and use apps like Skype to call home. Any military members have any experience with that? So, I guess what I'm asking is, What is the best way to fully utilize my Note 2 for internet access/calling home using WiFi on base? Do I need to purchase a SIM card or something? I'm not rooted but I have experience with rooting other devices and I'm willing to do so, but right now I have no reason to. Thanks!
Yeah Skype is your best bet depending on what fob you are going to be at. If you are at a big fob or base you will most likely have WiFi if not you might be screwed and have to use the mwr to make your phone calls. Another way is to buy a haji phone when you get there, the only thing is you will spend a crap ton of money on buying minutes. How this helps and good luck on your deployment!
Yes you can do as you suggested. I would recommend you install a few other apps too.
Tango - much like Skype
Google Voice - Good for texting when overseas with your USA phone number (get a Google number or port your number over to Google)
A low cost Voip calling app - for calling land and mobile numbers - I recommend WiCall as they only cost a penny a minute as of today to call any US phone number.
Install a few messaging app for good communication fun. Whatsapp, Line Naver,
iirc phone carriers are required to unlock your phone if you are moving to an area they don't offer service. Call T-Mobile and explain you're deploying with the military. They should probably unlock the device based on that alone. You can tell them you're putting your account on "hold" as well. When you get their buy a hajji(I know Afghans aren't Arabs, they're still hostiles) chip and put it in the phone. If hajji doesn't sell microSIMs you can just cut down a regular SIM card and slide it in. Use a real microSIM to mark where to cut or file the SIM card to.
Iraq had cell service where I was in 06-07 and again in 08. No internet though. Depending on what cities you're near, you might get 3G, Kabul for instance MAY have it. I dunno. Someone where you are going may have opted for satellite internet and be looking to unload their equipment when you arrive also. You can round up some people to split the cost if you want.
edit - The SIM card is gonna be more expensive obviously, you'll want to use that if you can't get wifi for any reason, a last resort if you will.

Does anyone know for sure??? if you can or cannot use the note 8 lte as a phone like the overseas version? So far no joy. Is it hardware or can we load some kind of app to make it work like the note 2?
Someone will probably have to port over the 5120 or 5100 firmware in order to try it since it doesn't' have the phone software installed. Give it some time.

Absolute worst case use Google voice or Vonage with call forwarding from your cell phone number. You can also sideload a mms.apk for texting. For call forwarding you have to enable the native dialer. I haven't tested it on this device but on the n7 3g you had to decompile the framework-res.apk and go to values, then bools.xml and change voice capable to true. This will unlock the native Google dialer hopefully. From there in the settings you can forward your voice calls to your Google voice or Vonage phone number.

Anybody knows why there is no section for this device yet ? also I tried to search all around to find stock firmware for it but I couldn't... anybody have odin images for it ?
Take it for what its worth but I called samsung and they said the att version does not have a voice radio in it.
I used the original AT&T Galaxy Tab as a phone for 2 1/2 years. The hardware worked fine. Never heard of a "voice radio." I have heard that AT&T had Samsung remove an earpiece speaker. If true, then you'd have to use your Note 8.0 with a wired ear phone, Bluetooth device or as a speaker phone. The critical issue for me is: how will this item sell? I don't see AT&T selling a lot of them. To mean that means that the endusers will see fewer ROMs down the road. Developers here can probably root this device and unlock the bootloader. Someone will -- at some point in the next few months -- make a ROM with voice capabilities available. And don't expect "official" Cyanogen releases.
However, AT&T may block the the Note 8.0 from access to voicecalls based on the IMEI. Now, the IMEI can be hacked, but that's -- legally speaking -- a gray area. Altering IMEIs to get "free" service is illegal. Doing so to access service that you're paying for violates the letter of the law, but not its intent and won't bring about any dire result.
At the end of the day, you may be able to access (after jumping through a lot of hoops) AT&T voice services and use the phone for a year or so, but it's not worth the bother. Get the S4 and tether a decent cheaper wifi tablet to it. Yes, it's nicer to have one device, but under this conditions impractical.

phone dialer
I was looking in Titanium backup and saw a dialer... maybe this could help with development
at&t note 8.0 sgh-I467
Seems to either be to dificult to root this device or its just not practible , no one wants a sim unlock
advertisement we can look else where or google it lol, we want a bootloader unlock . If you want to talk on this model download talkatone
if you want to move apps to sd card download ghost commander there is no real good way to
root this particular device there are at least 4 or 5 versions n5100 n5110 n5120 sghmi467 and sghi467
I have tried unsucessfullyo root this device by any forums the only one that gave me root access was cwm
super user and paid version of busy box , now if you have a computer more advanced than mine then
corbins is a good one and the detoxed version using adb is good howrver there is still no custom rom
Dogmans idea of saferoot also is good to go hiwever no custom rom I even tried safestrap 3.65 from hash
code not working with this device I used flashfly and fladhed the 5120 boot.img Big Mistake corbins p cloud
i467 camf1 got me out of that wirh odin 3.07 its known Hash Code has this on todo list of devices but he is
a very busy man im an idiot compared to this genious and I surrender like I teally had a chance to defeat that

I hope this may help others not to have a 1count on thier devce or soft brick !!!!!!!

Would it possible to hack this device for phone calls?
Does it have the needed hardware/radio for traditional cellular calling (not voip or volte)?
A friend of mine told me that At&t will assign you a number with your SIM, would they try to roadblock you from using it to make calls?
Just wondering if anyone else is interested in attempting this.
mine is hk lte version and it supports phone call out of the box. So isn't at&t's?

I keep asking the same questions, I know when Samsung announced the Note 8.0s they promised ATT customers a converged phone and Tablet, the "Phablet" as they so mwere marketing it, then I think when ATT and Samsung saw how much they were going to lose in revenue from people doing away with redundant "iDevices" they paniced and screwed over the customers and removed the dialer from the firmware.

I'm sure someone here could make it work as far as the device goes, but At&t holds the power in the end. Their model doesn't come with a phone plan, just a data plan. This is likely where it would fail.
could you edit your post title and specify the model number since there is multiple LTE version of the Note 8 please.
hi ,
i dont own one , yet , but my other galaxy devices i have google voice installed and then talkatone setup and it can make and recieve calls via google voice number , its voip but it works over data and wifi , so you can use your google voice number just like a normal cell number ,
check it out , i know its not the exact solution you were looking for but it does work , i cut my bill in half over 65$ taken off by lowering my minuets , forwarding all incoming calls to my google voice, and taking off text messages , you still need minuets though , the forwarding costs 1 min per call and someones ALWAYS gonna call your previous number until you get everything moved to GV
I'm starting to get really disappointed with my brand new Note 4. for several reasons.
Now I've discovered that it does not support voice and data at same time. That is a HUGE HUGE HUGE problem for me - especially if I'm using it as a notspot and miss phone calls. Are there any ROMS that deal with this issue? If not then I need to give up and return the phone before my 14 days is up.

If you are using hotspot you shouldn't miss phone calls. IT will automatically still ring but stop your data. :\
No, no rom can help with this.
You can get an unlocked note 4 that doesn't utilize sprint spark or integrate ur sprint number with Google voice and use calling and texting over data with hangouts. Other than that ur out of luck.

To answer the ignorant question, no it's hardware limitation.

No Sprint Spark device will allow calls and data at the same time.

I don't think the question was all that ignorant - its not a hardware limitation of the phone - it's the spark network that it's on. Other Sprint phones have this ability - and if you had a way to get your Note 4 OFF the spark network and onto their other one, this problem would not exist. I was wondering if there was a ROM that dealt with this - but I guess not.
If you try using hang outs for calls do I deleted phone.apk?

Actually its a spark hardware issue. He's right. Be careful the way you word things. The way you are saying it, makes it seem as though you could just turn off spark and solve the problem. Whereas thats not the issue. Itsba combination if the hardware required for spark and the was spark is setup in our devices.

Nope just make a call from hangouts or google voice. Leave the phone apk intact.
There are older phones - such as the Galaxy S4 - that you still get 4G data and can talk at the same time - because these phones are not on the Spark network. It would seem logical that one could configure your Note 4 to use the network that these older S4's are using - changing the APNS, making changes to your CSC...etc etc etc. It's not a hardware limitation of the phone - it's a hardware limitation of the spark network - so all you need to do is config the phone to use the other network. Problem of course is that Sprint sure as hell does not want you to figure this out and thus won't do anything to assist you in doing so.
But - at this point - I really don't care. This has me so pissed that I'm giving up and going to try T-mobile. What kind of loooser move is this by Sprint? Have top-tier smart phone that you can't multitask talk/surf at same time? Horrible, horrible move by sprint.
Yes I understand I could use hangouts to kinda get around this - but it's just worth it - furthermore this problem will still exist when trying to use the phone as a hotspot - and you can't use hangouts to make phone calls while using the phone as a hotspot - so again it's a hole they've dug us into that there simply is no way out of - other than dumping Sprint for ANY OTHER carrier that has the Note 4 - cause none of the other carriers have this issue.
Such a shame.

Except for the fact that no other carriers has unlimited data and Sprint knows this. So if you want unlimited data you have to pay by Sprints rules. Or go to other carrier, pay twice what you pay now, get 5GB per month and hit for ten bucks for ever gig you go over or get throttled so bad you might as well be using radio service.
tmobile now offers unlimited 4g no cap. in my case the total monthly bill is within 20cents of sprint. and surf and talk same time. choice seems obvious to me.
Simultaneous voice and data is a focus for Sprint and is part of network vision but isnt the top priority. Top is increasing speeds and stability in the network. Eventually it will be a capability.

I have a Version Note 4 and a Sprint Note 4 in my hands. Verizon has 2 bars - Sprint has 4 bars. Verizon download speed - around 11mb average. Sprint download speeds - average less than 1mb. So 1/2 the signal yet 10 times the speed on verizon. Tomorrow I will have a Tmobile one and will see how it does - but if Sprint is trying to deal with speed they're sure doing a crappy job of it. I used signal check pro to validate the signals.

Yep - I have it ordered should be here in 24 hours or so. Of course the next thing is all this has taken so long that now I'm past the 14day no-return policy with sprint - so I expect a battle when I try to return the phone 2 days after the 14th day. If anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with that let me know.

Own up and take responsibility for keeping the device longer than the 14day. There is plenty of info here, to search through and make an informed decision.
Lol @ Spark isn't a hardware issue, thats only a half truth. Until we get VoLTE
