RCS enabled android messages - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Finally enabled RCS for android messages.
Anyone knows how to identify users who enable RCS too?

When you type a text on a message and on the send button it should not say sms if it works.
Tried it and was disappointed. I wasnt able to use the features with another tmobile phone that is using the regular tmobile rcs. So everyone needs to do it and use messages on their phones. I thought this would be universal.

That's make sense. If it is universal, then imessage can do that as well. But it isn't.
So far only apps like WhatsApp that can cross all different carriers and manufacturers.
I know that the symbol changes when sms is used. But what I wish is able to see who are using it from the contact list.

You can. When creating a message select your contacts list and there should be a blue dot by the contact that supports this feature. At least mine does this and I'm in uk on Vodafone network.

Since today my status has been connecting.

[Q] SMS to MMS Fix

Firstly, I would like to pay respect to the developers who mapped the hardware button for the camera app. Respect to you all. Starting this thread hoping those same geniuses would be able to solve this problem. Android generally has this crazy notion that if i want to send a long sms, it will be cheaper for me to send an mms. I get like unlimited sms but i gotta pay for each mms i send so everytime i need to send a long sms, it costs me money. plus, if the recipient does not have mms configured, its money lost from my side and nothing recieved on theirs. so is there any way to stop the native messaging app from converting sms to mms after 3 sms length.
currently using Handcent sms for long sms but its a pain and it crashes often.

uhm.
why would a long sms convert to a mms?
I've never seen this happen.
Have no idea why this happens. if i use "MyPhoneExplorer" to compose sms on pc and send them, this problem doesn't occur. tonight, i decided to send a long sms directly from my phone and i saw that it converts to mms. so decided to google it and it appears Xplay isn't the only phone with this problem. a quick browse on google shows that loads of device owners are frustrated by this. check it out on your stock device as mine is stock also. just bootloader unlocked and rooted ;-)
Yea, mine does the same, bootloader locked, and does it un-rooted and rooted.
Very annoying. You'd think sony ericsson would have made this an option.
But i did have this issue with 2.1 on my motorola milestone.
mine just gives me a notification saying it will send 2 SMS, it even counts down hoow many characters i have left until it adds another SMS to it (only when below 20 character left)

Its after lyk 4 or 5 sms's it turns it into a mms, i can confirm every android phone i have had (hero, desire, desire hd and xplay) have all done this, i resorted to sending half an sms then writing the other half n sending that lol

I just tested mine to 5 sms. All it does it countdown how many characters I have left for each sms, and then adds another sms.
Converting into an mms sounds like a cheap trick to make more money by some carriers.
I am with Vodafone Uk and they don't use this trick yet it seems, although thanks for this post because now I will be keeping an eye out for this.
Still don't see it as much of a problem though. Just send one sms at a time?
Happens often here (when going into 4th txt), I just break messages down not to get stung with a MMS charge.
It can be annoying as when breaking the message down you can get a reply from the other side before they have read the full message, which can cause confusion.

Try expressing your feelings to your GF one message at a time...
Have you tried writing the whole message, copy/cutting half of it, sending half then quickly pasting and sending the rest? Or email/call the person lol? It might just be me but my texts are pretty small.

Well the solution is to go with a network provider that doesn't adopt this cheap tactic.
Alternatively, telephone them and threaten legal action with demand for all lost money sent on mms.
Changing an sms into an mms can not possibly be legal.

Why does my Xperia Play not do it then?
What makes mine different, other than the network providers own software?
It has to be a network provider setup?
I can't imagine an android stock rom ever having this feature.

Ok just to make a few things clear. I noticed this problem on my Xplay which has a stock rom 2.3.2 and i got it sim-free. i have tried it with several different vendors, like vodafone UK, 3, O2 and international vendors in Pakistan as well. Also, i've tried composing a message with no sim in it and still have the same problem. So its a problem with the OS and not network related. Saw the same problem on a stock Galaxy S Sim-free.
So Devs, please find a solution to this if possible.

how can it be network providers?
I got my handset SIM free (generic UK rom) and have used a few networks. it does it on all of them. and reports of it being the same on other Android devices.
It is nothing to do with networks, it Android OS.

[Q] Stop texts from breaking up

Stop texts from breaking up, How?
Every time I get a long text message it's broken up into multiple messages, it's annoying because sometimes they dont all come in at the same time, or they do and i think i have a **** ton of msgs lol. It's the same on the stock messaging app and google's messaging app. Is there a setting somewhere that I've missed? It's happened with incoming msgs from iphones and android phones on different carriers.

There is little you can do, it is the carrier of the sender that is doing it. Many carriers limit the number of characters you can have per text. So if they go over it gets broken into multiple text messages. It is not an issue on your end.
I also hate this.. When I had att I didn't have this problem..
Wasn't there an option to send messages bigger then a # of characters through MMS instead of using normal split SMS?

Yes I think there is. This is for sending messages though. When receiving a message it depends on how the senders app sends it.

Easy fix, just make hangouts your default SMS app...

Just a guess, but I'd say it's likely due to being Google's app and having tighter integration with the framework than carrier based bloat.

Yeah hangouts works great. Only problem I have is you can't send or receive mms while on wifi calling.
Now i have always had that issue but my GF gets all my messages as one no matter how long i make it without turning it into an MMS and hers to me get chopped up. We both have sprint. And she has an S5.

Just tried this sending myself a very long text via Wi-Fi on Sprint messaging app; it does work to combine the messages without converting to MMS.
Like others have said variables may limit results. My wife is also on my Sprint account using an iPhone 5 and her messages to me split from what I can see; don't know if hers from me split or not. Cross platform texting hasn't been reliable.
Have you tried the setting?

Initially failed to Motorola Photon Q. Had found the setting and enabled it and rebooted the phone; split the long message into 4 out-of-order texts. Did the System settings/System update/Update Profile on both phones and it works both ways. Sent the same text to to the iPhone 5 and it split. I've asked my wife to update her profile but she's busy; will try again later.
On my phone, had to defrost Samsung DM Service and reinstall Sprint Zone and let it update and opt out of EUL anonymous data sharing, agree to terms before I could update the profile.
BTW, combining the long text and sending a short text after that may have the shorter message arriving first. I actually sent an inquiry after getting notification that the long text test message had been forwarded back to me. The notice and inquiry went through before I got the combined message sent first.
I don't know if it happened to me or not.. never pay attention to it....gotta test later to see if if it's the same problem
How long is long. . I tested by sending to myself. But don't know if it is long enough.
My test text message consists of 80 words which was splitting into 4 text messages. Seems to be working between two different Android phones but still unknown if profile update will get it working cross-platform to/from iPhone. The Sprint iPhone 5 on the account seems to frequently have inability to sync texts with Android over Wi-Fi. Sometimes, it's just texting in general that the iPhone 5 loses.
For testing, just kept using the same message forwarded until it was received by both phones without the split.
May be wrong but sending it to yourself may only be an indication your phone can combine. It takes the profile update to tell Sprint you wish to use the combining method which appears to be an exception to every phone. Being on Gingerbread and CM for a long time, this is the first time I've seen the combining feature. About time! Hope it continues to work without frequent profile updates then broke again/update again.
This doesn't make sense. .i sent to my wife iPhone.. she received one full message but when she sent to me using the same text message it broke up to 4...wth

Did you perform the profile update on both phones? Does the Sprint iPhone have the combine text option for texts?
I haven't tried the profile update and retest with the iPhone 5 yet. Haven't seen the the settings menu on the iPhone 5, either. I think that phone is still on iOS7; afraid the update would result in early upgrade.
Not on the iPhone just the note 4
Open the stock messaging app and go to text message settings and make sure auto combination is checked.

Pixel XL Group Message/MMS issues

Day 2 of life with Pixel XL, and so far im honestly loving it. Coming from an S7 Edge (which shouldnt feel like a huge jump) definitely feels like a huge jump. Anywho, im having issues receiving group texts from what i suspect samsung phones (1 of the persons i cant receive from 100% has a samsung) I can text and send pics back and forth with that person sms no problem, but when we get in our group text and start responding it comes to me in his personal text thread as "Couldn't Download Tap to Download" i KNOW ive had this issue before with nexus phones, i wanna say my 6P did this and i switched to hangouts (back then) and it fixed it, however now switching to hangouts makes a mess out of my text messages ( i guess they seperated the two apps completely). Im on AT&T if that makes a difference, google store purchased.
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have any ideas?

AT&T Nextgen is the APN you want. I run into this from time to time on my Nexus 6P on AT&T. It can be the size of the message (number of photos or too high of a resolution) someone is trying to send you or the source. I had a problem a few weeks ago with a video clip from Facebook (which I don't have), it would not "download."
I've had the same problem. It seems to only happen coming from my wife's Note 5 on ATT. I also had the same problem on my Moto X Pure. Can't say for sure if I remember having the problem using Hangouts, but definitely do using Google Messenger. I'm like you, I believe it may just be a Samsung problem because I can't remember it ever happening with anyone else I know.
I had the same issue with a group text with two other people. Once of them is using an S7 (I am on ATT and that friend is on ATT as well) and i could not receive any of his messages with the same "touch to download" error.
It seems to have fixed itself yesterday somehow and his messages started to come in.
Glad I'm not the only one. I came from an s7 edge. Can't get certain mms from my work group message, some have iPhone some have Android. ATT doesn't have a clue, google doesn't have a clue, I don't have a clue.....really no one has a clue. I did a hard reset, deleted the other APNs, put my sim card in my old phone and back in, tried a new sim card, 3 different SMS apps. It's almost as frustrating as Google's 100 pointless SMS apps but not quite that bad.
Yeah i randomly have them come in and then randomly stop working. It's frustrating definitely. Hopefully someone smarter than me comes around and tells us what's going on and how to correct?
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
And it just stopped working again. I noticed this is only happening when I'm using the Pixel and the other person is using a Samsung S7, on AT&T, in a group chat and is sending regular text (i.e. not an image). If that person sends an image to the group, I get it on my end. If that person is sending me a direct text message or a direct image, I can get. This only happens when he sends a text to the group.
I have another group where one of the users is using an S7 but not on AT&T and I can get his messages in the group text.
If I put my SIM in another android phone, everything is working even in the group text. This has to something to do with either the S7 on AT&T or the Pixel.
Very odd.
Interesting. Pixel 5 on at&t and I have issues with txting as well. Sometimes they just stop altogether until one triggers my txt some how and I get a few in a row. I was using chomp but I don't think that's the issue. My moto x pure on at&f was fine. Must be something with the pixel on at&t. Group MMS also takes a while to get to me. Sometimes I get them an hour after the fact. Same three ppl on my moto x pure last year with no issues.
Anyone figure anything out? Was hoping the new messenger update would have solved it but nope. Still doing it

Solution: This seems to be happening when both sides are using the same carrier and one side has a stock android and the other has a carrier branded Samsung phone with "advanced messaging" enabled and all parties are in a group chat.
Ask the Samsung user to disable the advanced messaging feature under: Messages > MORE > Settings > Advanced Messaging and you should be able to receive group text messages from this person on your pixel.
Seems like something half baked with the carrier or Samsung advanced messaging setup.
I just tested this with my friend and it started to work.

My friend has galaxy s6 and in group texts I can not see what she puts. Only a tap to download.
Turns out deleting the APN doesn't fix it. I think it has something to do with the advanced messaging that the Samsung phones use. Ask your friend to turn off advanced messaging and see if that helps.

I'm also having the same issue. I have a pixel xl and my friend is using a Galaxy S7 . When we are in a group text together I do not get any of his messages (unless it is an image). I'm going to have him try disabling the "Advanced Text Messaging" in his messaging app to see if this works. This is a very annoying issue.

SMS settings missing in Verizon S8+

I originally ordered and used the S8+ on T-Mobile. I wasn't happy with the service, returned the device after using it for a week and a half and went back to Verizon and i'm noticing differences between the 2 different carrier phone model (which i expected to see).
The S8+ on T-Mobile allowed me send SMS messages (using the native Samsung Message app) that were as long as i wanted and they did not get broken up. On my new Verizon S8+ all incoming and outgoing messages are cut up and sent individually. On the T-Mobile version, there were settings in the Message app to change the different SMS settings and coding and that are missing on the Verizon model. I even enabled and used the terrible Verizon Messages app to see if i could make changes there, but there were no options there either.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed, or better yet, if it CAN be fixed? It's kind of frustrating. And Google provided no help except threads like this that were started and never completed with an answer.

That sucks. I know that SMS and MMS can be tricky. May have something to do with carriers. I have had to mess around with using different ones in different situations. I was using Chomp for a while with good results, but had to swap to Textra which has been doing well for me for my last 2 phones. Using Verizon on Verizon.

I've been using it for 2 days now and i love the app, but it still doesn't fix my issues unfortunately. Still receiving a bunch of mixed up messages

I am not having that issue. When someone send me a long message, it actually turn into an mms and I'm seeing it as 1 long message.
I also don't like the Verizon app, I want to use the native app. My native app works but the latest update wakes the screen on incoming SMS every single time no way to shut off. Very annoying, stuck using Verizon app for now as well. Have posted a thread here about that https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/screen-wake-incoming-sms-verizon-s8-t3594258 Also have opened a ticket with Samsung about that issued and Verizon community. Will see if it gets fixed with OTA patch. I have seen this before on beta builds on S7 edge, very annoying.
Also noticed they locked out the engineering menu, I mean come on Verizon. While I like the network way way way better than Sprint, this thing is locked and locked again.
I have been using the Android Messages app for a couple months now on my HTC M9. Just got this S8+ about a week ago. Hate the Samsung messages app. No individualized options for each person. The Verizon SMS app... well, it's the Verizon app, enough said. I have really liked the Android Messages on this now. No problems with sending short or long texts, or sending media. Seems to work the best out of all i've seen with the most options or features.
Does anyone know if Verizon killed RCS messaging features in the stock Samsung messages app? I'm not getting read receipts, typing notifications etc

I don't think Verizon supports RCS messaging, last i read they had no plans to implement it. Also, i don't remember Samsung having support for it either. I could be wrong, but that's what i remember.

Those options only work in the Verizon messaging app, it may only be limited to others also using the Verizon messaging app to message you, maybe someone can test it to verify. But I can indeed verify typing notifications and read receipts do working in the Verizon messaging app.
What's crazy is the other carriers support RCS messaging.... Like tmobile

AT&T does as well, but it's limited to within the carrier. Same for T-Mobile. And Verizon has it in their Messages+ app (which sucks).

Double text messages: Red Magic 5G issue or Android issue?

So I have had my Red Magic 5G Pulse Version for two weeks now and I have been experiencing a very frustrating issue when it comes to group messaging with this phone.
It might be hard to explain, but whenever my friends start a group chat, my phone number appears on in the group list, which isn't correct since the group list should only be showing my friends and not my phone number. Whenever I try to send a message within that group chat, my message ends up showing up twice on my screen, one from me and one from my separate phone number, causing two version of my messages to appear. Apparently, the second message only appears for me and not my friends. I also do not get any issues when I try to start a group chat with my friends, as my phone number does not appear separately within the list of users when I create the group. This only happens when a friend starts the group chat.
I have tried multiple things in an attempt to fix the situation. I have tried resetting the data and cache for my messenger app. I have tried resetting the phone number within the messenger app. I have tried factory resetting my phone. Nothing has worked to fix the double text message issued.
Big thing to note that I previously used a Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite as my phone and have been using an AT&T prepaid sim card with that phone. I never had any issues with group texts using that phone. The issue only started when I transferred my sim card from my Mi A2 Lite to this new Reg Magic 5G. I may have reason to believe that the sim card or my service with AT&T is causing these issues, and I will try and see if they can help me out here, but I am curious to know if any Red Magic 5G users are having this issue with group texting. Last thing to note: I am using the default Google messaging app that comes with the phone.

Are you using Google messages or some other app? I tried to create a group conversation in Google messages. And checked group info and I was not there. Only 3 of the other member showed. So I could not reproduce the issue you mentioned.

Yes, I am using the default Google messaging app. No other messaging apps are installed on my phone.

I can confirm I don't have the issue in NA rom. Atleast not in 8-128 black model. Probably it's only in pulse?
Edit: I don't have rcs so probably rcs is the issue?

Oh, I never even heard about RCS until now, so that may be a possibility. I will turn off the chat features and test my group chats again.

I don't think it's a good idea. Your chat features work based on rcs. Else they will just be sms and you will be charged a lot. Don't do that.

Well, what else would you suggest? I have tried mostly everything else at this point.

I am sorry I really don't have a solution. If you are ok with spending some money. You could disable chat features and reset the messages app and create a new group then test sms once to confirm if the rcs is the issue. Then maybe send a bug report to Google. Other than that I really don't know what can be done.

Yeah, well I should be okay in that regard, since my prepaid service at least comes with unlimited texting. I only have some data to work with but for the sake of testing, I should be fine.

Bumping this. I got my phone back and even with the new update from Nubia, I am still having trouble with group texting.
This thread topic is basically what I have been dealing with. https://support.google.com/messages/thread/977504?hl=en
I have tried multiple things in an attempt to fix the issue, and from the looks of things that it seems to be a device/software issue, which wouldn't be much of a surprise since the software for this phone is pretty terrible.
Might just be your sim card. I get double messages when my sim is near death.
