System storage so large ! - OnePlus 7T Questions & Answers

Just got a new 7t and was surprised to find there is not much free storage space free due to the fact the system storage consumes 27gb !
So I only have around 92gb free after installing a few apps.
Crazy big

By default any storage will provide you 10% less i.e 13gb gone initially, the rest roughly 5-7 gb was used to be taken by system around the time of android 6, as time proceded and storage limitations reduced, some buffer is kept in the system storage if, just, incase for future proofness.

Hi thanks for the reply, I kind of understand that it’s just that I have a oneplus 5t as well with the latest Android 9 software, it also has 128gb capacity but i have more free space as the system storage is only 6gb. So that a huge difference between 6 and 27gb.
I realise it’s android 9 vs android 10, maybe it’s also 32bit vs 64bit, I’m not sure really.

Also I think the system keeps a backup copy of current system partitions for OTA? That might have something to do with it.

Was going to pick one of these up in a week or so. Am I understanding correctly that on a 128gb variant there is 28gb already used out of the box? Wow

I agree, I got the 256GB and also noticed that it takes up 28GB.
My previous OP6 had "only" 10GB System. (9.5GB to be precise). I still found that a bit too much but, meh, not worth the hassle.
But this time 28GB IS TOO MUCH.

Yeah OP has A/B Partitions, so you have like a backup system.
But the System OTA zip is 2.5 GB. So are there over 10 Copies of old Systems ?!
(And LOS Androids are around 400-800 MB).
So it's just crazy.
Not that I'm running out of storage soon, but that's just abou the principle.
I wont accept that some Android OS reserves 28GB for itself.
I can have dual boot Windows and Linux on my computer on that storage space ...

Has this ever been resolved / answered? I've recently got my 7t and was amazed that i'd lost 27GB before I'd started!

See here for more details. The reason is that the system_a and system_b do not really exist, they are contained within the super partition on the 7t. It's the maximum space to be allocated instead. The system_a partition is in fact only ~ 2.2 gb large.

Thai is why I went with the 256GB varient I need a bit more than 100gb if there's no SD functionality

Same ? thank God we have the 256GB ?

I’m having the same issue. I got my 7t from AliExpress. Originally I thought the size was because my 7t was the CN version but has the global software installed on it. Where did everyone else buy their phones? Maybe it’s a correlation

It's still a pretty bad joke and it continues, though OP is not the only one.
It's due to Android's AB system and while I like it, it seems the way Google has implemented it, is pretty wasteful ...
https://www.pcworld.com/article/3561890/why-64gb-isnt-enough-space-for-android-phones-anymore.html
But like I said somewhere earlier too, it's even bigger than Windoze, and Windoze folder (including with all its drivers) is already bloated to 20GB ...
Also I mean, I hate Apple (esp. due to their anti repair policies, see Rossmann videos for Details) but at least they manage to keep their OS/System stuff under 7GB or so ...
And looking at reddit posts, not all variants? have that problem ... super weird.
On OP they discuss it for several pages, but no solution.
So is there really no way to just shrink that dumb partition to a more sensible size ?

I would like to join this thread. I have Oneplus 7T too with 30 gb system partition. Thats awful: how 128 Gb chopped by 30? I don't belive that there is no solution to get rid of partition ab thing. I don't need seamless updates. That blowes my mind.

No I don't think it's possible to get rid of it, it's probably part of the newer Androids anyway.

But if that's really the case, we should be able to resize it to some more sensible amount.
I just don't know the commands for that and can't really risk to brick my phone at the moment

Oneplus roms are bugged and their storage reporting is BS (use something like DiskUsage for a legit estimate of what the "partitions in your phone that can have data written to" are actually taking).
I just spent some hours trying to figure out why a base OP6 (still running 10.3.0, but I believe the point is still the same for other models) was having almost half of its disk filled by system... and it turns out that has nothing to do with the problem. In fact, I'm wondering if "system" is even actually measured, or if instead they aren't just calculating it by proxy of "used space we know something is occupying minus used space of the things we know".

Twenty-five frigging gigabytes were being taken by this gf_data folder, which seems to contain the logs of more or less every god damn phone unlock attempt since the last time the phone was wiped.
After some googling-fu, this folder seems to relate to the Goodix fingerprint sensors that Oneplus is using since at least 3 years.
I had hoped this heap of poo could be cleaned from the proprieties of some system app, but after searching all the firmware for strings, I have only found references to the disaster in \vendor\lib\ with drivers libgf_hal.so and libgf_ud_hal.so.
Good luck trying to fix that without root!

A little bit of research on your part would make the world a better place for everybody. Basically, the reason why you aren't seeing a full sixteen geebees on your device is due to a few things.
How the flash chip manufacturer determines capacities (giga vs gibi)
File system format
Partition(s)
and how the OS calculates the capacity of the flash storage chip (again, giga vs gibi)
I'll leave it up to you to discover the technical specifics on the how's and why's of it all, but just kindly keep in mind that you are definitely getting what you have paid for. There isn't some terrible conspiracy robbing you of your geebees, and this is just "the way it is" with any computerized storage medium.

Thankyou. I admit to being a bit lazy and not searching first . I knew I wouldn't get the full 16gb (taking into account the operating system, etc etc), but didn't realise that it would be this much less. This must be the lowest amount I have experienced on a 16gb phone so far.
I was expecting at least 13gb

What is the stock, available storage according to the Settings menu?

Hello, I was hoping current owners of the Pixel C could tell us potential buyers what the actual available storage is with this tablet if you go to storage, in the settings menu. I'm personally interested in the 32 GB model, but it doesn't hurt to get info on both sizes. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Anyone with a 32GB wanna chime in?
Also, does anyone know why it issues SOO much storage? That's more than I was expecting, to be honest. It's a skin-free OS, after all. And there's no cell connectivity.
The usual reasons apply. 64gb is not the full 64gb as all figures are rounded down to zeroes. The zip/tgz file is compressed and expands when unpacked and all the boot and system files are put into place. This all needs a swap file capacity to work within and that to update system apps. My 64gb N6P has a similar available storage on initial boot.

I never thought much about reserved, needed empty space for those types of operations. But I think of my 2012 N7. 32GB, and 28GB are available. That was one of the perks of a Nexus compared to, say, a Samsung. I just feel like that isn't the case anymore.

I get that the system uses a lot of storage, but nowhere near this.
If you download a firmware file it is about 4 to 5 GB.
There is no way this gets extracted to 44GB
In my opinion Samsung is cutting space to market their cloud service and or bigger devices

I know what you mean, but even with this in mind, there is no way that 44GB are just lost!
It should be less
Somewhere around 470GB
So, after partitioning the phone, there should be 476,8GB left
512 GB / (1024*1024*1024)

If that was the case then why offer 512 or an SDcard. I mean of course they want to sell more devices but thinking they are trying to use this to push cloud services seems a little far fetched.
If you haven't already decided to move to the cloud, I dont see how 44gb out of 512 will push you there. That is without even considering the SDcard.
It's the same on mine, i wouldn't mind even if I see people with half space taken from system: we probably have some dex or knox related stuffs active that they don't. I have the exynos 512 10+

System storage size

Is it normal that the system storage size is 27gb? Thnx
A/B partition 13.5 gb each.
Sounds about right. I have 7t Pro and mine says System is 29Gb.
Seems to be normal for the actual Oneplus 7T but is definitely not normal for Android 10 with A/B Partition. Other phones with similar OS like Pixel use around 10 GB.
My OnePlus 7, also with Android 10, had only 11GB. I am really wondering why the system size on the 7t is so much bigger.

For the future, when I actually need the space (bc some vendor, that makes awesome phones still refuses to add a simple combo microsd slot into the dual sim slot ),
do you guys know way to reduce that space to something more sensible ?
My good ol' XP was below 2GB and a freshly installed Ubuntu is under 5GB, so Android is never worth 30GB ...
I may accept double for the useful A/B stuff, but that's it.
(And yeah, the previous OP, including my OP6 had also more sensible System partition sizes)

Not possible. This is all thanks to Google's new partitioning scheme.
Think it's pretty ridiculous too...

Question Storage Space & Why

I ordered the 256gb option, but with cloud storage these days I don't really need it. I currently have a OP 8 Pro with 256gb and I'm only using 72gb.
What size storage did you order and why?
512GB. Sure I probably won't need all of that space but go big or go home right lol. I'm just now really getting onto the cloud bandwagon. Had Samsung devices with SD cards the last few years so if I need extra storage I would just go that route.
I ordered the 512gb option. The marina where I keep my houseboat does not have the best cell service. In the summertime when many people are there, the service can drop to under 1mbs. I keep all my music on my phone. Also, I keep many work files on it. If I am at a customer site, I can hook my phone up and transfer large files to their computer. We do keep these files on dropbox, but I like having them with me just in case the internet is down. I can also keep a backup of any key files so I have one more source of backup.
Using about 50% of my pixel 5 128gb storage, so I ordered the 256gb just to have extra room just in case, but I feel I won't even need it.
I'm not even using the 128 GB on my OnePlus 6 so I also went with the 128 GB version of the Pixel.
I currently have 2XL with 64gb and using about half of it, so I went for 128gb model, the lowest. I keep my media on my tablet anyway, that's where I have more memory.
I ordered 256gb why? I will keep for at least 2 years and for 4K video
I wanted the 512 gb option in black (mainly for resale) but the only option available when I ordered was 128gb.
My storage is rarely, if ever, over 50gb on any of my devices so it's more than enough.
I ordered the Black in 512Gb just because!
Sorta Sunny in 128GB? Why? Because that's the only option available for some reason!
Though, even if larger capacities were available, I would have gone with 128GB anyway. Everything I do with the phone is offloaded to the cloud anyway, and I am never above 60% of the 128GB capacity I have now.
512 GB. 400 GB+ of local FLAC format music.
Truth be told, I have no idea why I selected 256GB vs 128. I routinely use the "clean" and "free up storage" in the Google Files and Google Photos apps respectively. I just checked the storage on my Pixel 5 and I have 98.17 GB free out of 128. I do have a Google Drive subscription so it also cuts out local storage along with streaming everything.
Guess I'll quit the cleaning and freeing up storage and start using some of that 256 as a backup.

You never go on holidays, making videos? If you are overseas, for example making some videos about a show that lasts for like 30min, that will take up many GB - and you can't upload at the hotel, simply because no hotel has decent internet speed around. The data will stay on your phone until you get home. If you make another round of videos, have fun. Imagine you stay somewhere for 3 weeks and after 3 rounds of videos you are already at your max. Happened to me more than once.
And that's just one way to fill up that kind of small storage. No idea how people can be satisfied with having small sized storage. Imagine you need to download some audiobooks or high quality TIDAL music for a long airplane flight, or some offline 4K videos, or 4K porn. That's just ramping up those tiny GB. Just because you don't need the storage now, I can think of 10 scenarios easily where the average joe in a certain circumstance will have serious problems if he wants to use his phone to it's full potential. Also don't forget that the P6 Pro shoots 4k60FPS, that's double the data needed most of us people here are used to with P4 or whatever that can only shoot 4k30fps. And we still don't know if the 50 MP shooter won't require bigger more storage (even though some argued that it will be toned down to 1/4 ergo 12,5 MP) - we will see.

With my usage patterns, storage is a non-issue for me, and if it were I can easily off-load via an OTG adapter and whichever TB or larger drive I wish to use if I don't have access to a reliable data connection.
128 GB for me. Currently using 10 GB on a Nexus 6 with all my data backed up to a self-hosted instance of Nextcloud.

And to save $100 that can be put to better use.
Stormy Black 512 GB. While it's not a regular occurrence, I have had to clean the storage on my 256 GB OnePlus 7 Pro a few times and I'd prefer not to have to deal with that. I don't mind paying an extra $100 on a $1000 phone that I plan to keep for at least 2 years, especially since I got $15 of it back through Google One credits and credit card points.
Even though I had to wipe my phone this spring, I currently have 81 GB in apps, ~40 GB in photos and video recordings (which I do sync with the cloud but I prefer having local access to recent ones) as well as ~70 GB in files (app backups, game data, music, and downloaded video for offline viewing mainly). With system and other miscellaneous files that leaves me at 208 GB used.

Traveling on buses, trains, and planes means that internet service can be spotty in areas, and I prefer to have some movies and music saved to my device. I also used my phone as a mini USB flash drive to back up documents and system files/drivers for other devices, just in case my laptop gets a virus and needs to be reformatted.
Most people seem to be buying one level up from what they normally use. I'm currently at 127 GB of 128 GB on my Pixel 4 XL, so I considered buying the 256 GB model, but, like you, I also got 10% + Reward points, and decided to just pay the extra $100.00 for 512 GB.
I have a bad habit of upgrading my device every year, while saving money in other areas, but skipped the Pixel 5 because it didn't seem like a true upgrade, compared to my Pixel 4 XL. I can't predict the future, so I don't know Google's plans, but if the Pixel 7 is a mid-range device, or lacks an XL/Pro model, I'll happily keep my Pixel 6 Pro for 2 years, so the extra storage is a little future proofing as well.
File sizes, pictures, videos, seem to get bigger, as resolution and sound improvements are made. I'd rather have too much than not enough. As an aside, when I purchased an Iphone 12 Pro Max for a family member last year, I got them the 256 GB model, in part, because the 512 GB model was $200 more.
If Google was using Apple's pricing structure, paying an extra $200 for 512 GB would've been a tougher sell, but if I keep the phone for a longer period, or sell it in the future, the extra $100 should be easy to recoup in one way or another.
For those that are interested, here is Apple's pricing structure, for the Iphone 13 Pro Max:

Does anyone think it's fair to assume that Google's profit margin on the 512 GB model is substantially higher than other models? I can't imagine it actually costs much more to add a 512 GB memory chip vs. 128 or 256. Does anyone know, based on market conditions, supply/demand, if those 512 GB (or 1 TB chips, in Apple's case) are really that expensive?
