System taking up huge amount of space - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Greetings,
my system takes up about 44GB in internal storage.
Even after a factory reset, it has been like this since I got the device
No matter if I'm using android 9 or android 10 beta
Do you guys experience the same?

The same, nature of the beast

My device shows a simmilar amount, 44.70 GB, system/user files, I think it is normal

I get that the system uses a lot of storage, but nowhere near this.
If you download a firmware file it is about 4 to 5 GB.
There is no way this gets extracted to 44GB
In my opinion Samsung is cutting space to market their cloud service and or bigger devices

Just checked my N10+(snap), it's a lot less:

Exynos 256GB

I know what you mean, but even with this in mind, there is no way that 44GB are just lost!
It should be less
Somewhere around 470GB

So, after partitioning the phone, there should be 476,8GB left
512 GB / (1024*1024*1024)

If that was the case then why offer 512 or an SDcard. I mean of course they want to sell more devices but thinking they are trying to use this to push cloud services seems a little far fetched.
If you haven't already decided to move to the cloud, I dont see how 44gb out of 512 will push you there. That is without even considering the SDcard.

It's the same on mine, i wouldn't mind even if I see people with half space taken from system: we probably have some dex or knox related stuffs active that they don't. I have the exynos 512 10+

[Q] Can you increase the data.img on evo to 1GB data storage?

ok just got a evo and thinking of making the switch officail from tmobile hd2 now on the hd2 android roms you can increase the data.img size to default 512 MB, 1 GB or in some cases 2 GB allowing you to install more apps on to your phone, I was wondering if the same thing was possible to do with the evo I like to have a lot of apps on my phone so if someone could point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it.
11 views and not one answer seriously someone has to know the answer to this and yes i have searched and found nothing
Forums are kind of dead on the weekends.
I haven't seen anything like that for the evo since it's 512ram/512rom.
We have apps to sd - basically you can move your apps to the SD card, which is normally bigger than the ram/rom.

Obviously you can't increase it its the built in Rom space.
You can use apps to SD (a2sd) on some roms that partitions your card and puts apps on it.
yeah sorry about that and I just know on the HD2 android which I have been using on tmobile you can increase the data.img size up to 1 GB which allows you to install way more apps on your android

that is because on your HD2, the data.img file resides on the memory card, which is likely 8GB or larger, so that increase in size is possible. On the Evo, the data.img is stored on the internal ROM, which has a physical capacity of 512MB, so we have already reached the maximum capacity...

Those are the correct specs. They are the same that HTC, Sprint, and now Google have always advertised. 1 GB Rom and 512 MB Ram.
As to the OP, you may be able to change the partitions some, especially if you clean up the system partition, but it would require building a new ROM and flashing it. At least, that's the only way I know of to repartition your NAND.
Oh, and you probably won't recover way too much memory to the data partition. Probably no more than you free in system by removing some unnecessary built in apps like Quickoffice.

That's how it is. Space is lower than what manufacturers advertise + system hogs space. Just buy a 64GB microsd card, they're not expensive.

The 8GB Nexus 4 has just over 5GB of usable storage. There is a mod for the Note 2 where you can use your external microSD as your internal SD and vice versa. You might want to do this if you have a 64GB microSD so you'll have a lot of "internal" storage.

You still get the advertised 16GB but only 10GB is usable.
There's a good explanation for the "discrepancy" on memory.
Before I explain, you need to know that the manufacturers have not lied about the space they are offering. It's a good play of words.
First, there is a difference between,
A gigabyte and,
A giga byte.
The former is the actual term for that memory band.
The latter is simply a play on 10^9.
A gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. And a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes. And lastly, a kilobyte is 1024 bytes. Multiply that: 1024^3 and you get:
1,073,741,824 bytes.
So a gigabyte has 1,073,741,824 bytes.
You would think manufacturers would give you the full amount of bytes in each of their gigabyte.
Wrong, they simply adopted that a "GB" =
1 x 10^9 bytes. In other words,
1000000000 bytes. Which is technically true.
Since its standard notation that,
Kilo=1000
Mega=1000000
Etc...
Now that you know how they purposefully misled you, but not illegally, you can calculate your own true memory space in byte form.
Take your 16,000,000,000 and divide it by 1,073,741,824
Your magic number becomes
14.9011611938
That's the amount of real gigabytes you have.
Then there's the OS.
Try it yourself with your PC hard drive. There is always ~6.9% "discrepancy".
My HDD sells as 500GB,
In reality, I get 465 gigabytes.
This applies to all flash memory, hard drives. Also includes your SD card.
Firms also use it to advertise Internet speeds. In this case they like to use megabits instead. Where a byte = 8 bits.
Beamed from Jupiter on my Galaxy Note II
There's also a 1.3gb system cache partition which is largely free, Amy idea why it's so large?
Sory if this is ot but Can i ask - do i need to install antivirus for the note 2? Pls bear with me as this is my very first android device

You should probably ask that on a different thread since this has nothing to do with the op posted qustion, But ill answer, I need more posts up anyway gotta get rid of this junior member thing haunting me on my left, anyway, Do you need an anti-virus...no, i don't use one, the amount of Linux viruses are very low, but if you want to be safe then go ahed and get it. Are torrent is safe using the utorrent app. Well the app itself doesn't make them safe it depends on what you download, uploaders can upload good files, or they can upload harmful ones, you gotta be careful, and honestly ive had bad luck with the android utorrent app anyway, I use torrents on my computer there is really not much need to use them for your phone as most app sizes are pretty small and download quickly, and you can find most apps online just searching for the apk's if you fail or don't want to use the market...hope this helps, and apologize to everyone else for responding to an off topic post, and also doubble bumping an old thread

"lighter" roms - any possibility?

As the title says is there any chance a very light rom could be developed? I'm still fresh with HTC but I notice that the system software etc takes up a hell of a lot of the "available" storage. I wish they wouldn't advertise phones as having X internal memory when half of it is actually needed for the whole system itself.
I'm still used to my old galaxy s4 where some light roms only took up a few GB's of the internal memory.
Cheers for any feedback

I could be wrong, but I think that's due to partitioning and not necessarily having a "heavy" rom.
Well between 12-15 GB is a lot to lose from a phone advertised as 32GB memory lol. I understand that a certain amount will ALWAYS be set aside for the system itself, just seems like a huge chunk.
It's just a shame that there aren't any options for reducing this by much. Or if it's even possible. Perhaps I'm just used to teeny tiny rims with my galaxy lol.
There are no Light Roms that I've seen for the M9.
The only thing I could say is install LeeDroids ROM and in aroma check mark all the apps that you don't want installed..
Buy again not really the answer to your question..
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
You'll have a light ROM in cm12. Once its been fixed. In regards to sense, the vast majority of the ROM can be removed using titanium or during install using aroma. Sense has always been quite chunky, unfortunately there's no real way around that, a desensed ROM has been available for pretty much every HTC phone I've ever had so I guess it probably won't be too long before one becomes available for the m9 too.
As for the amount of storage available, no disrespect but its a 32GB phone with external storage as an option! Why would you need an extra GB? As opposed to the s4 you will have more memory even when you've fully loaded your ROM with apps.
I think the system bloat would be a huge issue except for the external sdcard. With it, it's close to a non-issue.
I have a 32GB external card. I keep my music, twrp and tibu backups, and photos on the external card and leave internal storage for system, apps, and roms. Works just fine.

Obviously the main issue is a backup takes up between 9-12 GB so once I have two roms backed up on my external SD then I'm well over half way full . I like several backups, all different roms

What is the stock, available storage according to the Settings menu?

Hello, I was hoping current owners of the Pixel C could tell us potential buyers what the actual available storage is with this tablet if you go to storage, in the settings menu. I'm personally interested in the 32 GB model, but it doesn't hurt to get info on both sizes. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Anyone with a 32GB wanna chime in?
Also, does anyone know why it issues SOO much storage? That's more than I was expecting, to be honest. It's a skin-free OS, after all. And there's no cell connectivity.
The usual reasons apply. 64gb is not the full 64gb as all figures are rounded down to zeroes. The zip/tgz file is compressed and expands when unpacked and all the boot and system files are put into place. This all needs a swap file capacity to work within and that to update system apps. My 64gb N6P has a similar available storage on initial boot.

I never thought much about reserved, needed empty space for those types of operations. But I think of my 2012 N7. 32GB, and 28GB are available. That was one of the perks of a Nexus compared to, say, a Samsung. I just feel like that isn't the case anymore.

How much Internal Storage is available for apps?

I'd like to know exactly how much storage is available for the installation of apps.
I'm in the middle of restoring mine and Already Installed 90 apps and have 44.37 GB available
System has around 30gb locked up for it. My internal storage has around 220gb....
My system is 12.61 gb. Nowhere near 30
28.67GB for 256gb model. I think if you have a lower storage model the system reserve is lower.

Why is there only 28gb available for apps when there's 256gb of storage? Shouldn't it mostly all be available? I know Oppo's color OS had this issue, but they did an update where you could merge partitions. Why is ASUS not letting apps use more of the storage? Is this common with ASUS?
I have a Moto G4 with 32GB. 6GB of that is used for the Android OS leaving 26GB remaining. According to the stats I have 20GB available to apps and whatever else I want.
