I ordered the 256gb option, but with cloud storage these days I don't really need it. I currently have a OP 8 Pro with 256gb and I'm only using 72gb.
What size storage did you order and why?
512GB. Sure I probably won't need all of that space but go big or go home right lol. I'm just now really getting onto the cloud bandwagon. Had Samsung devices with SD cards the last few years so if I need extra storage I would just go that route.
I ordered the 512gb option. The marina where I keep my houseboat does not have the best cell service. In the summertime when many people are there, the service can drop to under 1mbs. I keep all my music on my phone. Also, I keep many work files on it. If I am at a customer site, I can hook my phone up and transfer large files to their computer. We do keep these files on dropbox, but I like having them with me just in case the internet is down. I can also keep a backup of any key files so I have one more source of backup.
Using about 50% of my pixel 5 128gb storage, so I ordered the 256gb just to have extra room just in case, but I feel I won't even need it.
I'm not even using the 128 GB on my OnePlus 6 so I also went with the 128 GB version of the Pixel.
I currently have 2XL with 64gb and using about half of it, so I went for 128gb model, the lowest. I keep my media on my tablet anyway, that's where I have more memory.
I ordered 256gb why? I will keep for at least 2 years and for 4K video
I wanted the 512 gb option in black (mainly for resale) but the only option available when I ordered was 128gb.
My storage is rarely, if ever, over 50gb on any of my devices so it's more than enough.
I ordered the Black in 512Gb just because!
Sorta Sunny in 128GB? Why? Because that's the only option available for some reason!
Though, even if larger capacities were available, I would have gone with 128GB anyway. Everything I do with the phone is offloaded to the cloud anyway, and I am never above 60% of the 128GB capacity I have now.
512 GB. 400 GB+ of local FLAC format music.
Truth be told, I have no idea why I selected 256GB vs 128. I routinely use the "clean" and "free up storage" in the Google Files and Google Photos apps respectively. I just checked the storage on my Pixel 5 and I have 98.17 GB free out of 128. I do have a Google Drive subscription so it also cuts out local storage along with streaming everything.
Guess I'll quit the cleaning and freeing up storage and start using some of that 256 as a backup.

You never go on holidays, making videos? If you are overseas, for example making some videos about a show that lasts for like 30min, that will take up many GB - and you can't upload at the hotel, simply because no hotel has decent internet speed around. The data will stay on your phone until you get home. If you make another round of videos, have fun. Imagine you stay somewhere for 3 weeks and after 3 rounds of videos you are already at your max. Happened to me more than once.
And that's just one way to fill up that kind of small storage. No idea how people can be satisfied with having small sized storage. Imagine you need to download some audiobooks or high quality TIDAL music for a long airplane flight, or some offline 4K videos, or 4K porn. That's just ramping up those tiny GB. Just because you don't need the storage now, I can think of 10 scenarios easily where the average joe in a certain circumstance will have serious problems if he wants to use his phone to it's full potential. Also don't forget that the P6 Pro shoots 4k60FPS, that's double the data needed most of us people here are used to with P4 or whatever that can only shoot 4k30fps. And we still don't know if the 50 MP shooter won't require bigger more storage (even though some argued that it will be toned down to 1/4 ergo 12,5 MP) - we will see.

With my usage patterns, storage is a non-issue for me, and if it were I can easily off-load via an OTG adapter and whichever TB or larger drive I wish to use if I don't have access to a reliable data connection.
128 GB for me. Currently using 10 GB on a Nexus 6 with all my data backed up to a self-hosted instance of Nextcloud.
I went 128 since that's all I really require...and to get the order in on crazy launch day!

And to save $100 that can be put to better use.
Stormy Black 512 GB. While it's not a regular occurrence, I have had to clean the storage on my 256 GB OnePlus 7 Pro a few times and I'd prefer not to have to deal with that. I don't mind paying an extra $100 on a $1000 phone that I plan to keep for at least 2 years, especially since I got $15 of it back through Google One credits and credit card points.
Even though I had to wipe my phone this spring, I currently have 81 GB in apps, ~40 GB in photos and video recordings (which I do sync with the cloud but I prefer having local access to recent ones) as well as ~70 GB in files (app backups, game data, music, and downloaded video for offline viewing mainly). With system and other miscellaneous files that leaves me at 208 GB used.

Traveling on buses, trains, and planes means that internet service can be spotty in areas, and I prefer to have some movies and music saved to my device. I also used my phone as a mini USB flash drive to back up documents and system files/drivers for other devices, just in case my laptop gets a virus and needs to be reformatted.
Most people seem to be buying one level up from what they normally use. I'm currently at 127 GB of 128 GB on my Pixel 4 XL, so I considered buying the 256 GB model, but, like you, I also got 10% + Reward points, and decided to just pay the extra $100.00 for 512 GB.
I have a bad habit of upgrading my device every year, while saving money in other areas, but skipped the Pixel 5 because it didn't seem like a true upgrade, compared to my Pixel 4 XL. I can't predict the future, so I don't know Google's plans, but if the Pixel 7 is a mid-range device, or lacks an XL/Pro model, I'll happily keep my Pixel 6 Pro for 2 years, so the extra storage is a little future proofing as well.
File sizes, pictures, videos, seem to get bigger, as resolution and sound improvements are made. I'd rather have too much than not enough. As an aside, when I purchased an Iphone 12 Pro Max for a family member last year, I got them the 256 GB model, in part, because the 512 GB model was $200 more.
If Google was using Apple's pricing structure, paying an extra $200 for 512 GB would've been a tougher sell, but if I keep the phone for a longer period, or sell it in the future, the extra $100 should be easy to recoup in one way or another.
For those that are interested, here is Apple's pricing structure, for the Iphone 13 Pro Max:

Does anyone think it's fair to assume that Google's profit margin on the 512 GB model is substantially higher than other models? I can't imagine it actually costs much more to add a 512 GB memory chip vs. 128 or 256. Does anyone know, based on market conditions, supply/demand, if those 512 GB (or 1 TB chips, in Apple's case) are really that expensive?

Come on folks...128gb microsd?!?!
At first I was excited about the Sandisk announcement (http://dailymobile.se/2008/10/20/sandisk-to-develop-128gb-micosd/); but then I asked one question--When will this end?
I'm torn between constantly buying "the next biggest memory card" versus start storing everything I need online.
Sure they both have their PROs and CONs -- but since 99% of my travels are in a 3G area...
...why NOT use one of the many FREE picture/file stores online?
...and why NOT watch movies and vids online instead of a downloaded copy to my memory card?
...and why not start storing my contacts, calendar, tasks and everyday To Do lists online too?
...and why not even run my desktop applications online where I can access them anywhere I have connectivity?
We Tech OGs know this "cloud computing (Web 3.0)" is nothing new--remember DUMB TERMINALS and THIN CLIENTS? Amongst other advantages, it was SUPPOSE to put a halt to ever-growing disk space needs and excessive licensing costs back in the 1980s and 90s. It didn't really fly...and so now Here we go again.
With only a handful of today's mobile devices having more than 640K of RAM, maybe Bill Gates was right after all when he supposedly said "640K of memory should be enough for anybody".
What is better than to have a large cyclinder capacity?
Right - even more cyclinder capacity ...
I am not traveling always in good 3G connection area and I like to carry arround the data I need. The more the better, for me it is realy that simple.
Wikipedia, MP3s, Navigation, Presentations, fotos, documents, etc.
With a smal card I have to select the data. The larger the card the easier it will be - just have everything.

128GB on a MicroSD card is just insane.

Until about 2 years ago, I loaded gigs of TomTom and Mapopolis maps to my SD card. The problem was those maps NEVER had street names and areas less than 4 years old. So I abandoned that and started using Google Maps, YahooGo and Nav4All. The only downside is that an internet connection is now required. I'm now starting to go online with fotos so I can share. I abandoned loading encyclopedias, dictionaries and wikis to my SD cards a long time ago. To me loading those on a card is the same as carrying around hard/printed copies. It's outdated the second you put it on paper. By accessing those online, in theory, you'll have the latest updates.
My only concern with accessing contacts, calendar, tasks and documents online is SECURITY.
Not long ago I spent $60 on a 4GB micro SDHC
Haven't come close to filling it -- but when I saw a 8GB for only $25 last week, I just had to grab it.
I just might do the same when 16GB get to that price point.

Meanwhile this rule of thumb isn't true anymore. The pressure inside the cylinder affects the power of an engine too. So more cylinder capacity isn't neccessary that much.
Had a 512MB SD Card - was enougth but a bit too small ... !
Upgraded to a 1GB SD Card - was enougth but again became a bit too small.
Bought me a 2GB SD Card - damn, still not enough space ... !
Got me a 4GB Card - ... will it ever be large enough for my needs?
Sitting on my 8GB Card - ... not enough space !!!
Well, avoided so far the 16Gig Card because I think it is just too expensive! Hopefully prices will drop soon - so, 128GB would be cool, I could get rid of my 160GB USB drive.
However, I doubt that any currently available MOBILE HANDSET would be capable of handling a 128GB Card ... !
..let me hear ya say tera. oh yeah
The more space you have, the more space you´ll need/use
So the "When is enough" will have to be answered by users and not by manufacturers. The day we don´t buy something that will be the day when they maybe say "Now it´s enough"
Keep in mind those Cards will be used as well for other things then Phones. with a USB reader ( that you could carry on your key chain) you could carry complete data of your desktop with those. (pictures. movies, music etc)
I am selling those readers and many company's that have been using CD/DVDs moving to USB readers with cards. >see the picture for sample<

I suppose the question is not necessarily whether or not "when will enough be enough" but more so "when will they develope phones with much better camera and video quality? It did nto sell well because it never had a great sale on it but the thing had amazing video, camera, and even voice to text on it.

like this nokia n98? id rather buy a camera and a phone/pda i mean its not like digital zoom is amazing or anything, but yeah that would use alot of space, so would a phone with better screen resolution then all of the games/videos would be bigger. there probably wont ever be an end because people are lazy so they program lazy and dont optimize code and people want everything to be hd so everything will be bloated just for graphics
Wow, that is a pretty sweet phone anda carl zeis lens is really killer for a phone! So I guess that would be a yes.
so this is still using the SDHC interface or what??
it wouldnt make sencse to make a new subunit of SD if it can only go 128 Gb, because face it........ that isnt large enough to support another couple of years.
the jump from 2 Gb to 32 Gb was pritty big, 16 times the capacity.
32 Gb to 128 Gb is nothing compared to that first jump, its only 4 times bigger.
The real question should have been. Where can I get one and how much?

What if the next generation of ultra portables has one or a couple of these in addition to the full size USB. It would encourage flash memory makers to start making micro USB flash drives (with built in OTG)?
If consumers demand it, then someone somewhere will supply it? China makes tons of niche products.
SoC manufacturers should just stop messing around and give us the large amounts of local storage we've been asking for. I can buy a 128GB flash drive that is smaller than a stick of gum, yet somehow 64GB of storage in a much larger tablet or smartphone is seen as uneconomical.
If this were desktop computers we were talking about, cloud storage would be the niche and massive local storage would be the norm. It's like nobody remembers the days when the biggest selling point of the iPod was the storage capacity. You can still get an iPod Classic with 160GB of space for only $250, but a 64GB iPhone costs $300 more than the 16GB version.
I'm convinced the flash memory market is basically a racket.

There are different types of flash memory in terms of reliability, speed, and cost. Most of the time when you talk about flash memory you're referring to NAND or NOR type memory.
NAND is cheaper to produce and is commonly used in USB drives, MP3 players, etc. due to its higher storage capacities but suffers from poor read speeds which a smartphone heavily relies on. This is where NOR memory comes in, its MUCH more expensive than NAND but gives the read performance that devices like smartphones need to simultaneously for example play music, launch an app, etc. without bringing the phone to a complete halt. This explains why the cost of storage on tablets/phones per gigabyte is much higher than for example a flash drive.

That uses a small hard drive not flash based memory making it even cheaper in terms of gigabyte per dollar than flash memory. In general we don't use hard drives in tablets and smartphones because as a trade off you lose reliability, power consumption, and not to mention its physical size (Theres a reason the iPod classic is so thick).

This.
Desktops use DRAM for memory-intensive processes, and slower HDD-based storage for secondary media. There is no reason why a smartphone can't have 1GB of NOR reserved for the OS and RAM, and a secondary NAND-based volume for apps, games, music, etc.

I agree with earlyberd. This is exactly how people have been doing it with SSDs in computers for a while. While large SSD devices are typically prohibitively expensive. up to 7 times the cost per GB, putting a small <200 GB SSD in a computer, coupled with a larger HDD, gives both the performance for the OS and apps, and the amount of storage needed for large media libraries or work documents.

The difference in cost between the two amounts of memory is just a few dollars.
It is highly likely that the the cheap version costs MORE to produce than the expensive one.
The reason they do it is what economists call 'price targeting'
Basically, they could sell you the 64GB for the same price as the 16GB version and still make a profit. But they would lose out heavily on all those people who would have happily paid another $300 for the same product.
In an economist's perfect world Apple would sell just the 64 GB version for the manufacturing cost plus 'whatever the customer can afford', be that $20, $200 or even $2,000. This way they could maximise their profits.
But we all know they can't do that so instead they provide two versions of pretty much the same product, one for poor people and one for those with a bit more cash to flash.
Businesses have been doing this for years; second class train carriages, overpriced extras in coffee shops, different models of printers etc. The cost to the manufacturer of adding the extra 'luxury' is minimal but it encourages richer people to reveal they have more money to spend.
Hell, Amazon took the who thing one step further when they added a tracking cookie that would change the listed price of their products depending on whether you were a new or returning customer. Two people looking at the same DVD at the same time would see two very different prices (unless they deleted the cookies off their pc.
So yeah, it sucks ass for us consumers, but I don't see the problem going away any time soon. In fact I expect it to get worse and for more phone/tablet manufacturers to remove the sd slot altogether. This is a trick they won't give up on easily.
There isn't something like this out yet, is it?

Hurry up china I want one !
I'll give away the secrete sauce which is how Flash vendors should be making their drives...
Have you seen most of the multi-cables avaialbe now, which include a "Magnetic" end which adapts to Micro, Lightning, Type-C?
Well why hasn't this made its way to the flash media?
Why make your flash device fixed to one platform... Make it universal like cable manufacturers are!
---------- Post added at 11:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:56 PM ----------
And if that doesnt work, todats young generation loves keeping their fingers busy, now with the spinners. why not make a spinner flash drive?
Each of the 4 ends can have a different connector (eg: Type A, Type C, Micro, Lightning) it could be balanced by the caps so it works like a true spinner, but have flash storage, lights, you name it...
I need to stop giving away all these good concepts and get a job with a company to produce them!
Anyone Hiring?
why not use those thingies?

I have had my 16gb nexus 5x for about 3 months now and i was wondering if it was worth getting the 16gb option? i bought my device off amazon and the total cost of the device was $2700TT and the 32gb version was about $3300TT ($100 US more as compared to the 16gb! using my exchange rate ($6TT=$1US)) of course this includes all the shipping and handling to my country (as this device is NOT available in my country, only way to get it was to import it) and due to living in Trinidad...in the Caribbean........ as i did not want to shell out the extra $600 (because i did not have it ) i settled for the 16gb model. It has become apparent... 3 months after that the 32gb option would have been the better choice and i should have saved a bit more as 10gb (yes the 16gb is only 10gb usable) seems rather unusable in my case. I have done research on the device and knowingly bought the 16gb version *facepalm* .
I just want to know, is the 16gb version popular among the community? and do any of you regret your decision of getting the 16gb instead of the 32gb?
I know it's a useless question and all but I'm just curious, I want to know if other people have had similar thoughts as me.
Thanks.
Take advantage of streaming services and Google Photos backup to free up space on local storage. You can also try clearing your storage cache as it tends to build up a lot over time Settings > Storage > cached data then reboot.

I don't know about the popularity in this community but in my hometown, almost every 5X is 16 gbs, as people buy it as a budget phone, they try to cut down the price for the less storage.
I am also kind of regretting this 16 gb phone. The fact that it doesn't has expandable storage, making backups are pain in the ***. I can keep multiple Roms zips in my phone. I can hardly pull any nandroid backup.
On the other hand, if I don't mod my phone, I can live with it. I remember that there is a law (or phenomenon) that whatever the storage size you'll get, your data will always expand and fill it up. Aand I've experienced and witnessed it enough to believe it.
The only solution I've discovered is either using cloud services and cutting down my data. And I was also thinking of getting a usb type c flash drive (as I'm upgrading my laptop too). So I'll get expandable storage on the go and can pull backups on it.
Is 64gb truly enough? I had a I phone X with 64gb however I could never fill it up it was always somewhere around 25gb no matter how many pictures or apps I had. I currently have a 6T and it really doesn't seem to be the case on Android, I mean I have a few apps installed, barely any pictures and already hitting 30gb used storage. Really wanted the white pixel 3 xl in white at 128gb but right now it has a 5-6 weeks delay and thinking of settling for a 64gb instead.
I had an OG XL and my wife a small Pixel both with 32. The only time it would get close for them was if I had more than one TWRP backup saved. With the 3, she went with 64 and I went with 128 just because. I can't imagine using that much. I am sure 64 would have been fine. Keep in mind, I store almost no video (taken or D/L) on the phone. YMMV based on that.
When I was on the LG g6 with 32 gigs I was running out of memory and could not get anything to the SD card to save my life (or memory) but with this phone and all of the same apps loaded I am running about 32 gigs of apps installed and with my music downloades brings it up to 43 gigs I got the 128 gig version. I don't want to say I regret getting it as there is always more stuff I can put on my phone, but if there was a substantial difference in the prices between the 64 and 128 (more than there is now) then I would have gotten the 64 knowing what I know now.
For me, 64 has been totally fine. 128 is nice, but given no sd card, i never keep the same data on my phone forever, you get photo backup etc.
I contemplated for some time before purchasing mine. After using my Pixel 2 XL 128gb for a year i was well under half storage used when I sold it. As I tend to upgrade yearly this time I went with 64.

You could get the black 128 and get a white Dbrand skin and turn your 3 XL into a panda .

I think with the unlimited storage on google photos, it might be okay to have 64GB for the average person. I personally need AT LEAST 128GB because I love to take videos with my phone and I also have over 2500 songs that I put on it as well. Also, apparently google claims that google photos will back up your videos in full reso (1080p & 4k), but I've heard it actually saves it in 720p. So for me, keeping videos at full reso is very important and will most likely end up eating away at my storage the longer I have the phone.
Hello,
I wonder what version to buy - 128 or 256 GB, more is better, I know, but budget is not flexible ;-)
Is 128GB ok if I am going to get about 2 hours of 4K movie?
Will filling the storage with data make the phone slow?
Greetings!
Neither. 128gb isn't much space. 256 isn't either especially with no expandable storage.
Leaves no room for growth.
Not having a SD card slot is a major liability and wastes your time, battery and makes reloading much slower and difficult.
Thanks for the answer and for your time, although it is quite possible that this was a bit of a wasted time as there are no references to the questions of my post. But perhaps my question has not been very precise. Well, my point is that someone who has the phone model mentioned in the topic, wrote how much really free memory is available for data storage (because the system usually takes part of the pool).
The second question concerned the requirements of 4K movies, theoretically it is 70 Mbps, i.e. about 30 GB per hour of movie, which theoretically gives over 3 hours of recording on this phone (depends on the answer of previous question). It's even too much for me, especially since you can rip everything to the cloud at the end of the day. Nevertheless, the opinion of a practitioner would be very valuable to me.
Regards!
You'll suck up 128gb before you know it not including 4k recordings. With a relatively light load I'm using at least 60gb* of internal on my N10+. The lowest I would go is 256gb. That's not all that much.
Something with a SD card slot would work better. A V30 rated card can stream 4k vids.
*critical data, media, docs aren't on internal memory; the 60gb initially is just apps, DCIM and download folders. It quickly increases in size from there though.
Well... N10+ is not I am asking about...
Please, anybody with S22 kindly to check?
If anything scoped storage based apps will require more memory than my non scoped storage ones. You will be running mandatory scoped storage. I run Android 9 and 10, no scoped storage. So there's that.
128gb be cutting it tight... you want to have at least 20gb free at all times. Otherwise you'll end up playing stupid games.
