overall quality is excellent. it's flagship-like. the only nit picking I can find is an overall slight softness in the RAW files, and noticeable distortion around the corner/edges. However, it's not egregious and the overall especially low light performance is truly excellent if not the tops. Having that Sony IMX sensor really does wonders in low light, and color renditions are generally excellent as well. I can't wait to have a GCam port for A3. I used a redmi note7 port but the colors tend to oversaturate with rmn7's gcam app. Focus has been quick, though I think the software lacks a bit of polish when it comes to face recognition, something I hope they'll fix, or become fixed with a Gcam port.
The photo qualities are excellent. I can't complain, especially for the price.

Manual camera test at morning light at 5:58 AM,
Observings :
1) Photo got brightened up, by bumping bumping ISO, as the result photo is a bit grainy.
2) Phone screen displayed much punchier image by boosting Contrast and saturation , but the actual photo when uploaded to PC was quite natural.
3) Image size 2.3 MB, image taken through Stock cam. In good lighting conditions Stock cam is able give more control than gcam :cyclops:, gcam needs to be optimized for our A3..hope future gcams support be good

Awesome Camera quality for the price
Yeah, I'm using this phone for about 10 days now, and I must say the pictures from those cameras are very good. Even the selfie cam produces sharp photos with good colors. And the video from front cam is crispy. Didn't test video footage from back camera but I'm sure it'll be impressive too. I installed GCam & the picture quality got a solid upgrade (both main & front cameras), color processing, dynamic range everything got even better. Very satisfied

Please can anyone tell how much is the max exposure time (shutter speed) you can do with the rear and front camera?
And it does come with cam2api enabled by default?

It comes with cam2api. On Android 9 max for rear camera was 32 secs, at the moment on Android10 it's 0.5 secs (I just hope Xiaomi will fix this).

Hi guys! I don't know if someone already post something about...
I'm quite expert in photography, i got a good experience in serveral years of photoshots with my canon 350D and later Canon 40D, so i would like to espose a technical issue of the nexus camera.
You maybe need some skill in photography to understand all, i assume you know the basis.
I notice that nexus camera shot photos ONLY at f/2.8, that is also the maximum aperture of the lens. For those who knows the general rules of photography this just sound not good.
Maximum aperture (our case F/2.8) is needed when you shot with low light situation, but for other situation, in daylight, shot at f 2.8 reduce the depth of field and also the sharpness of the detail in picture, because the lens works better when you close the aperture to an high numer ( f 4 or f 5.6). This more closed aperture would be better for ALL picture you take in daylight, results as more detailed picture and a general better sharpness.
I do some test for understand how the camera work, but there is no situations where the camera shots at different aperture... if you take a photo with strong sun light (at 12.00 ) camera take f 2.8 aperture and, for not burn the light, 1/3400" time !!!!!! like you take photo at F1 cars in action !!
Obviusly, if you shot a landscape you don't need a SO FAST time (landscape did't move ) but you need a close aperture for obtain a better picture!
i hope it's clear (sorry for english....)
Now, what we can do? can the camera shot at more close aperture? or it's an hardware limit? (it would be strange however...)
maybe we can tell google to take a look at this "problem"
You're forgetting something, the 'lense' is most probably an f/2.8 prime, it's not going to have aperture blades so it can't possibly change f/stop.
The only thing we could change if there were manual settings are ISO and shutter speed.
After having a play for five minutes it looks to me like the Nexus has a prime aperture of f/2.8, a maximum shutter speed of ~1/3400th of a second and 1/17th of a second is the slowest. The ISO ranges from 50 to 650.
It's pretty crappy, I'd love to have manual ISO and shutter speed controls, it would make cell phone cameras much more interesting to use for sure.

ok understand, i was thinking that is present an electronic shutter that is able to "simulate" the change of aperture..
so we must take this as fix aperture... and so it's not possible to have feature for manual speed control, you risk to get under or over exposure... maybe it could be sync with iso, but i don't think we get a good results...
There are no moving parts in the camera lens, so no zoom or aperture control. The aperture is fixed, so therefore the only control we have is shutter and ISO. Sadly this means the DoF is fixed for any given focal distance.
However, f/2.8 is not so bad as it sounds. The DoF is related to the aperture size and the focal length of the lens (hence the f/x in the aperture - f is the focal length!).
Because the lens on your phone is tiny and mounted very close to the camera sensor, the focal length of the lens is also very small, particularly when compared to an SLR camera where the lens is mounted some distance away from the sensor, so has a much larger focal length.
The result is, an aperture of f/2.8 on a phone camera will have similar DoF to a lens on your SLR at around f/8 to f/11 i.e. around the mid range. Also, because the lens if effectively a prime lens with fixed aperture, they can optimise the lens for those parameters, so you have less compromise than you would have on a typical zoom lens for your SLR.
One thing to always remember though, is that its a phone first and a camera second. You shouldn't expect SLR performance from a phone! There are other camera apps out there than can give you a bit more manual control than the standard app, but you'll never be able to control the aperture! With the standard camera, you can however adjust the brightness level by +/-3 EV in 1 EV steps - tap the settings icon, then the +/- icon, then you can set the exposure compensation level.
Fixed aperture. Can't change it. Very small focal length means wide DOF.

It's not possible to simulate a change of aperture, you'd need blades to do it. It's just a feeble 3.43mm f/2.8 prime. You'd end up with a hulk of a phone if you tried to introduce aperture blades to the little CMOS. I don't even think it would be possible on such a small sensor.

can you post some sample screenshots of camera here?
So far medium to high brightness takes excellent photos. I am finding HD much more appealing than HDR in most situations. In low light HD or manual mode must be used to get an acceptable photo. HD works very well in a single 13w(cfl) light illuminates room (low bedroom light level).
Soft fine grain present in photo, but it is not distracting and plenty of detail left.

Camera seems to be very compareable to my 6S Plus. In low light the iPhone does a slightly better job, in good lighting the 1+3.

I have both the 6p and the HTC 10 and while the 10 sucks and the 6p is hard to beat I am pleasantly surprised with the op3. It's really good actually. https://goo.gl/photos/RgwFUT3Rwhyt6XJL6
I am using Camera FV-5 and Cinema FV-5. So far no problems with them. Also to my eyes they seem to have better image quality.
I am uploading 2 photos: Direct jpg from camera app, another is edit of the same image in snapseed app(edited jgp, not raw file).
I am happy with the camera quality
When looking at photos other people have taken with the OP3 it often looks like they have a watercolour filter on them when you zoom in due to the image processing, but some other images don't. Is anyone who has the device able to explain this?
Thanks

Really great pics!! ?
my pics
After testing the OP3 and my 6P, the SD820 could be a beast, but man the pics on the 6P are much much better, specially in a low light environment AKA where most pictures happen AKA in your house. I cant say i am dissapointed, its pics are good in daytime and average in low light for a "$400 phone". But not sure I am going to keep it. So if you are planning on dumping your Galaxy, 6P or iphone for this phone, you might want to wait for another one if the camera is that important to you.
Hope this helps someone.

Disappointed here, but I knew this was an issue going in. Not as bad as some phones I've had though, but should be better.
I wonder what the chances are that this can be fixed with software updates... as everyone says, the low-light pics are the only real camera problem
question are you doing full auto or using manual mode to capture this low light pics ? Have you tried other apps to see if it makes it any better low light pics ?
After some testing, i found that the lens is capable for decent low light shots if you use the manual mode...unfortunately seems that the auto mode has some problems..also i found that is better to take shots in 12mp mode instead of 20mp (even if you resize the 20mp to 12mp)...i attach some 100% crops from 12mp photos..the pillow shot is really low light and the moon shot is with zoom. Of course with minimum Photoshop work the photos can be really good for smartphone.
They should had stick with a smaller MP.
The reason low light sucks because the sensor size is too small for 20 MP.
There's a reason all Nexus 6P/5X and Samsung went to smaller MP to achieve better low light camera.
The opposite is true for iPhone. 6s takes worse low light picture than 6 because they went to higher MP without increasing sensor size.
Lowlight pic I snapped. Tried to expose for general scene which ended up blowing out the highlights on the sign (unrecoverable jpg). If you shoot with a steady hand and drop the shutter speed in favor of a lower iso it doesn't end up too mushy.
My first lowlights pic with this phone. ISO 100 3.5 sec. Super soft corners, I didn't expect it to be sharp but boy this lens module is soft.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using XDA Free mobile app
I've also found low-light is a lot better with manual mode, but sometimes we don't always have time to adjust. This brings hope for better software updates, however even when you go manual there's a decent amount of noise. Not sure the way around that but you do get brighter pictures.
What about using a different camera app?

The low light performance seems better to me than I was expecting from the reviews. I got mine yesterday and it had an update waiting as soon as I turned it on. Perhaps the newer build has better camera software? Let's face it, low light performance is mainly software these days. Probably with expensive licensing attached.

Exactly the same phone and same version.
As I have seen, ZTE has improved a lot the camera on this device, because from all the reviews I saw that were made last year, I was just disappointed and wondering if I should get this one or not. It seems ZTE is focusing a lot in camera performance and it's improving everything with the updates, and I'm pretty much happy with how their acting with the Axon 7.

Nougat was delayed until February, because of the new Chinese year, but it seems we will have an update this week.
Regarding the pictures, you can find them in the other threads where I have posted some, because this is only for low light. I tried to put as many pictures as I can because no one does, and the camera was also important for me. I was between this one and the Mate 9, and even when probably Mate 9 has a better camera, I have seen that is just slightly better but it lacks of some other important things to me like sound and display quality.
As for the camera, I don't think you need to worry at all as long as you are looking for a decent and nice camera. If you want absolutely the best one, then go with another phone because this is slightly below, but manual mode is really useful and can get really nice and sharp pictures as well.
For the price and the specs, I highly doubt you would get anything better.

Isn't that the major real world difference between the 8 and the 8 pro (OK, faster memory and a faster screen but can you actually tell)? So you want an OP8Pro but at OP8 prices. That isn't going to happen any time soon.

Me too.
Having moved from P20 Pro to the OP8 I'm quite underwhelmed with its camera.
I knew I wasn't going to get flagship 2020 camera specs but I didn't expect my 2-year-old P20 Pro to outperform it in every situation. Pardon the pun in anything other than bright light the P20 in night and day ahead of the OP8 and even in bring light I still prefer the P20 Pro's photo processing. The OP8 seems to either be too whitewashed lacking colour or the opposite, too much colour. That'd be fixable with a firmware update, however.
If anyone cases to see some comparisons shots I can post some up
it's exactly the same camera as OnePlus 7 models so it's average at best, you can have the same main camera for half the price with OnePlus 7 regular
Slightly much better than the Oneplus 7
Here's a macro picture
I got as close as I dared with my OP8.

Outdoor photography is good but indoor is much inferior to my dad's old samsung galaxy note 8.
Macro Camera has very low quality output and observed the color temperature is very warm.
Update :
Main camera with Digital zoom is giving much better results than the MACRO camera.
The macro camera is just completely useless. It would be better if they had just not added that camera. Instead they could have provided a ultrawide camera more on par with the main or wireless charging.
In fact that could have ended up being cheaper for them.
I compared photo with my old Samsung's S8
The photos on OP8 are better in normal light but just bad in low light. The selfie camera cannot even detect my face in medium low light, while S8 could at least detect my eyes and face outline.
The OIS in back camera is also not on par with S8.
Apart from the cameras everything is good in this device.
Under the right conditions not too bad.
Hello,
I have the X80 pro with the European Funtouch OS.
I am not too happy with the colours (although it was overcast today, maybe that's to blame) of the default setting or Zeiss Natural Colours.
I'd like to try the Gcam but when I google for it, there seem to be so many sources and I don't know which to trust.
Can you reccomend one?
Thanks!
I have the same opinion. I move to Vivo from OnePlus6. When shooting objects the pictures are excellent - for example in the buildings city, persons, .... Night photos are beautiful.
Unfortunately I am not satisfied with the performance of the camera when shooting the landscape. In my point of view the pictures at an infinite focus distance are not very good. In some cases the colors of picture seem not nice to me. I would also welcome more settings in the camera, such as disabling digital zoom.
I would also like to try different camera app. I tried several versions of GCAM but none was completely reliable. Thank you.
Have you guys tried open camera? or HedgeCam 2?
what kind of results are you getting?
Thank you for the tip for the camera application. I quickly tried the OpenCamera application and you can see a big difference in image processing. OpenCamera has the possibility to store photos in PNG format that seems to me to be the best. The size of the file is greater of course but it would not bother me. Unfortunately, OpenCamera has no opportunity to switch lenses.
It would be nice if Vivo create the possibility of PNG into a standard application or store JPG in higher quality. I know the VivoCamera has the opportunity to store high-resolution images but unfortunately there are no other settings in this mode.
I tried to make a comparison pic but I don't know how much it will see on forum. For example note the detail of the branches on the trees. VivoCamera may have more detail but there is a loss of quality in JPG processing - something like noise.

Hi clone.x. Thank you for the tip for GCAM by MGC. Definitely the best image quality of all camera applications I have tried so far. I set the best possible JPG quality and the result is fantastic. I was surprised by the performance of the telephoto lens - very nice. See attached pictures.
The only disadvantage I have noticed so far is the slower switching of lenses. At the moment of switching the camera seems to turn off and the screen is lost and immediately jumps again. Original VivoCamera doesn't do it. But I don't mind, the quality of photos is more important for me.
I think this has definitely been confirmed that problem is the VivoCamera software. Vivo should still work and maybe in the future software will be as good as the Vivo X80Pro hardware.
Thanks, I'll try that.
can you tell more about the GCAM compared to the stock camera?
Hi all. I add two photos taken by the GCAM night mode. The first is a wide lens 0.6-1x and second is a telephoto lens 5.4-2x. The exposure lasted about 2.5min but the result is unprecedented. Note on a wide picture how far is the building that is taken on the second picture with an optical zoom. A tripod was used of course. Hardware Vivo cameras is really excellent I think.
At GCAM it has happened to me several times that the application crashed but it did not bother me. The quality of the images is definitely better in my point of view. The only thing that bothers me a little is a longer time when you switch the lens.
I think the original VIVO camera application would help a lot if Vivo allows you to store higher quality of JPEG.
wow, this is quite incredible coming from a phone
vivo sensors are very good
thanks for sharing

Please Test this GCAM. It is for X80 Pro.
I have now received my device myself and was able to test the camera.
This camera app is the best I've seen from any manufacturer.
Even the GCAM linked above is not as good as the standard app.
For me it does not require GCAM. This is the first phone where I don't have to use it.

I only have tested the GCam for some snaps and the results were very inconsistent.
I'll have to take more shots with it.
That being said, I think the stock app is the best there is for night photos.
As for daylight, I'm curious to see whether the GCam is better. Especially colour-wise.
GCam will be always better than stock app in day and night if you know what to with it.
Gcams has lots of settings to improve picture quality.
Yes, she has. I've been using the GCAM for years.
And I can say for myself that I don't need one for the x80.
The only GCAM that works properly is the latest LMC.
By the way, every GCAM makes images that are too dark. The exposure is wrong.

Can you put here examples gcam vs stock.
in the light the difference is not that big. Then more in the dark.
GCAM is LMC with some settings on the main lens for a good result. By default, the picture doesn't look that good.
Stock-Cam with Zeiss Mode.
I found the mistake. I was using an XML config for the OP9Pro and this was the problem in the dark. Found the setting for it.
I just got the other lenses up and running now I have to configure them. But that will take a while because it is very extensive.
