How good is the camera?

I am thinking of getting a Defy as a free upgrade to my Hero. Reviews of camera seem mixed but general impression is that it's not brilliant, especially in low light. Interested to hear the views of people here.

You can compare the photos from defy with various other phones, including N8, iPhone4 on gsmarena site. Just click on some of the latest reviews, doesnt matter which phone, and go to the camera section of the review. There is a photo compare tool.

I was pleasantly suprised with the quality of the flash. up to a metre or 2 it is very effective and doesn't wash out the photo like some others. All in all I am pleases with the camera - thats just my opinion though.

Thanks. I am almost certainly going to get one. The nagging doubt in the back of my mind is the speaker issue. Difficult to know how much of a problem it really is. People who don't have the issue (obviously) don't post to forums

None of those Cell Cameras are that cool in low light compared to a DSLR. What would really help is a camera app that writes out a dng file so that one can properly posprocess this in say Lightroom/Photoshop/Noiseware.
Just for completeness shake, the camera module seems to be a MT9PT012 ...

IMHO - flash and camera is pretty awful. Here's a shot with flash, I even gave it +20 brightness in Gimp:

Ironically - That was shot with my HTC Desire
I guess the Defy's camera is just below cell-phone average. It should't be your only camera, but for "Hey this looks fun!" shots it'll do fine.

I really like my defy but, honestly, the camera is not the best part.
Also the display looks not so brilliant as the desire's one.
I'm not saying they're bad, just they're not wonderful, but considering defy's price it's absolutely fair.

Well, one thing none of the others can do is H2Oing it. I just filmed in water, definitely better results than any other phone attempting the same

I'm using the Camera360 app. There is a filter called "Effect enhancement". If i you this one, the pictures look better - the ones taken in short range. Ok, they do look a bit "artifical", but for me its ok. There is a "free" version of that app for trying out...
The Defy is not the first Android i bought, but it will be the first Android, which will not be sold again. I really like this phone...
Maybe there will be some kind of camera-optimization. Until then, i will take my digi-cam for "more important" pictures to make.

This was taken with the Defy, different day so not a direct comparison. The weather was worse and it was cloudy. Hope this give you an idea of comparison though.

Photos aren't that great but they're not awful. I do find that the built in editing (kodak perfect touch) does an excellent job though. The macro mode and color reproduction aren't as good as my vibrant. But overall im satisfied.

yeah I agree that kodak perfect touch enhancement works well

What about Videos in 720p ?
Anyone succeed to take videos in 720p with Froyo 2.2 ?

have you tryed the kodak perfect touch option?? It's excelent! for night pics, and remember to use the "night" mode in dark places
imo, It's good++

I took pictures with it for the first time today. I did not like the quality of the pictures. My first impressions:
Pros: The LED flash is bright and puts my old BB Curve to shame. You could use it to blind a night time attacker if you could instantly turn it on with an external button.
The interface to take pictures is pretty good and easy to use.
Cons:
-Colors are muddy and off color even when shot outdoors.
-Colors with the flash are not automatically corrected and show up with the blue/white color cast of the LED flash.
-Color space compression is very noticable with banding visible under various conditions.
-Slow to take a picture because it does not focus until you click the onscreen button to take the photo.
I thought video was better on balance than the camera but it is rather poor in low light (as expected). I hope that I will learn to get better results with it after more testing but I'm glad it's not a primary reason for me to own the Defy.

I found the camera pretty good in comparaison of my old phone.
But there's a hudge miss on the native camera app: you cannot change the JPG compression and by default it's very very compressed! Some have their 5Mpxl pictures that takes around 300kB (it should be 1.5MB at least!).
Maybe if someone know a way to change this settings it would be nice for improving the quality of the final picture

I really like the Vignette app for the camera, it's old school styles go rather well with the "performance" of the camear

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the OnePlus 3's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

sucks on this department when compared to those of samsung, iphone or nexus 6p, but is alright... average at best.

even my old xperia Z3, with all the bad feedback that the camera had, takes better photos in low light conditions.

I'm noticing a pink cast on the corners (worse on the lower right) when trying to take low-light indoors shots.
There's an example which shows what I'm talking about (I made an extreme exposure on purpose in order to make the cast stand out, but you can clearly see it during live preview before taking the shot).
Is my unit defective? Please tell me I'm not the only one

Pretty sure I have that too. Only visible when using extreme exposure.

This should be high iso values. Next time try change to manual mode and put iso manually.

I know what I'm saying - leave the iso as it is (auto) and play with the shutter speed - between 1/250 and higher the pink cast should be at its peak (given the situation you're indoors).

Check this out. Photo was taken around 10PM at a camping night. I'm happy about it's camera performance. But lowlight crowded scenes could get blurry. I would rate lowlight camera performance for OnePlus3 8/10 if he S7edge gets 10/10.
Neither too good nor too bad.

I think this camera is pretty good in low light. I got some nice (for phone camera) shots using manual settings. First one is taken at midnight, no lights but the moon. Second one from fishing pier, I couldn't even see houses on the beach with my eyes, but sensor actually caught it. Third one is full moon and bioluminescent ocean.
These are all taken without any artificial light. I think this camera has potential.

Manual mode, iso 400, 0.5-1 s shutter speed.. No edit.. Just stock camera..

IMHO low light photos are amazingly good. Much, much better than my old OP2. Here is an example. Deep night with medium city lights.

can anyone here perhaps explain in simple terms how to use manual mode, in particular ISO?
I use manual mode sometimes but the only thing I change is exposure time in order to get more light into photos in low light scenarios, but I see others modifying ISO as well and I'm not sure why or why not to do that

The higher the iso, the lighter the picture.
But at the same time a higher iso means more noise.
If possible without shaking the phone it is always better to shoot at the lowest iso
and use a longer shutter speed.

Do not worry about iso if you are not shooting a quick object. Like moving thing. Just adjust shutter speed and let the camera adjust other settings. Find out maximum exposure time you can get without a tripod. Play with E. Time to get the best out of night photos. Increase iso incase of you want to capture quick shot. It would be grainy, but less motion blur. :good:

Usually blurry mess, totally unacceptable. Sure manual settings + tripod, you can make artistic shots, but in day to day use, this camera (or the algorhytms behind) is total rubbish

its (much) worse than my previous Nexus 5x.
People here using manual settings are just kidding us.
I appreciate a good manual mode but auto performance is what i want and 1+3 fails miserably here. Night shots are terrible, my 5x (same sensor with Nexus 6p) beats it by a large margin.

Well. It's definitely better than the iPhone 7 and 6S camera that's for sure. I was shocked to see how poor it's low light performance was.

manual mode works well on oneplus 3...........you just need to keep it on timer

The low light camera performance is good. The post processing noise reduction is excellent. I must say that the camera needs to be still though.

The low light performance, as basically all reviews show, is horrible. My old G4 outperforms the XZP easily. The XZP features no OIS, the noise reduction causes blurr. If you want a phone for low light shooting, do not (!) go with the XZP.

Low light of this phone is horrible,, even video is very grainy. Hope sony update this

Low light is excellent using manual mode and my little tripod. Without the tripod, it's just similar to most other high end smartphones without good or completely lacking OIS... The slightest shake and you're left with a mess [emoji17]

You name it - a tripod. I'm not running around with a tripod - other phones managed excellent night photography without one! Just so we understand each other - that picture was taken with my 3 years old LG G4, no tripod, auto mode. See the fine details? And that one is already rescaled by Facebook (!) to 2 MP(!), the original has 12 MP.
The XZP can't even get somewhere close to that in quality.

Very true,, i dont know why samsung uses sony's camera sensor but can get a very good low light shots.. And sony the maker of the camera cannot even match samsungs camera shot. I hope sony will look into this and give a software update to fix this issue.

I think it's all because the market of SONY's camera ....

It's not great, but it definitely isn't terrible. Hopefully Sony will add OIS in their next flagship.

I don't find the low light quality that bad. Here is a couple of shots i took all hand held at a festival this weekend, it was a bit foggy but all the below are unedited.

With tripod in manual mode low light pictures are great. Without tripod you easily can get bad pictures in low light. But despite all the marketing hype trains: the pictures of S8 and U11 are also only mediocre. Sony should add OIS or EIS for stills. I also suspect their business with cameras and image sensors behind those disadvantages.

Great shots. I too find the camera to be good in lowlight. A clean lens, tap to focus and steady hands do the trick.

Guys just use the shutter speed ctrl.
At 1/15 you can already control the handshake etc.
It's just the full auto which is messy, once you use the manual it's amazing.

Can someone who know how to use well manual mode explain how to change settings in any night/low-light situation? A sort of mini-guide... At night I switch in manual mode and put ISO on 800 or 1600 and photos are better, but maybe there are better solutions in manual for a perfect shot. I think that xz premium camera is one of the best, but on low light automatic mode is not as good as has to.

I should just preface this with the fact I don't have this phone yet, so I can't give perfect advice but I'll tell you what I know from experience.
Your goal should be to figure out the shortest shutter speed you can do and use that to set the ISO. The lower the ISO the better, but not too low that you can't get a sharp image because of the shutter speed.
The easiest way to find the slowest shutter speed is to find something with fine lines and take pictures of it, progressively decreasing the shutter speed until it becomes blurry. Probably start at 1/200 and see how you go. That number is then the slowest you can go. Then go a stop or two faster, which should make for a solid baseline shutter speed that you can use. By doing this, you get more flexibility in choosing a lower ISO and therefore get better image quality.
Your ISO choice will depends on the brightness and detail of the scene, the larger the number, the less detail and more artifacting you'll end up with. Try to keep it as low as you can get away with without going below your minimum shutter speed.
But yeah in general, experiment and see what you can get.
Edit: Just got the phone and found you can't choose both ISO and Shutter Speed. I've been shooting at 1/60 shutter speed pretty comfortably with decent results but your results may vary.

It seems that with the XZ1, in manual settings, in the control for Focus, SS, EV. They added ISO as well. So maybe we could also now control ISO and ss St the same time.

It is because of Sony's so called G lens. lot of pro cameras also use Sony sensors (e.g. Nikon). It's not just the sensor that give you great pictures. Sony needs to put a better lens in phones. you know what would be bonkers, putting a lens with an aperture of 1.4 or something. that will blow the competition out of the water.

I don't know this will raise the XZP's point for low light but its so great (at least for me)

This phone is only good at well lighted condition but in low light it's horrendous even the video is very grainy. But i admire it with its capability in shooting moving objects no blur.

the frustrating thing is, the hardware is capable of so much more, its really just the post processing that lets it down, a finer degree of control would be more useful or even allow RAW so we can do the editing later.
low light shots are a different matter, that's probably an optical limitation more then anything else. a CMOS / CCD is only ever as good as the optics the light passes through.

I'm very disappointed with the low detail of the camera.

Oh wow the 3rd an 4th ones look great. I dont see how people can complain about the camera on any mobile device honestly. I came from an Xperia Z2 which had a phenomenal camera I was really impressed with it. The fact I could flash cyberian camera mod just made it even better. That gave me the ISO sensitivity equivalent to our XZP. The mod allowd for the Z3 to support 25600 ISO which I believe is higher than out XZP.

Completely satisfied with just that and I know the XZP will snap photos better. Lets just face it though, the XZP and ever other phone are just phones so youll never get anything like a DSLR but maybe something close. I think alot of people need to appreciate what phones are capeable of now. Especially those at dxomark. They also need to realise that they are just phones once only able to call.

Furthermore proof that dxomark was paid by Apple and Samsung, giving it an 83 and then you look at this? I would think that was taken on an expensive DSLR!

Amazing mate, the colors the blur the contrast, thumbs up!

Oreo update helps immensely in low light, my xzp seems to be using 2000iso now instead of cranking it to 3200 or 6400. More grain but less smearing. Burst looks to do a good job as well, although you cant use it in low light for shutter speed reasons.
Pictures arent perfect or anywhere near note 8 level, but they are more than useable now in low light.

As an ex owner of Nokia 1020 I am quite happy with the new SONY IMX400 sensor performance as I am with my older IMX300 sensor in Xperia Z5. The later still does superb pics in daytime with 23MP manual mode.

overall quality is excellent. it's flagship-like. the only nit picking I can find is an overall slight softness in the RAW files, and noticeable distortion around the corner/edges. However, it's not egregious and the overall especially low light performance is truly excellent if not the tops. Having that Sony IMX sensor really does wonders in low light, and color renditions are generally excellent as well. I can't wait to have a GCam port for A3. I used a redmi note7 port but the colors tend to oversaturate with rmn7's gcam app. Focus has been quick, though I think the software lacks a bit of polish when it comes to face recognition, something I hope they'll fix, or become fixed with a Gcam port.
The photo qualities are excellent. I can't complain, especially for the price.

Manual camera test at morning light at 5:58 AM,
Observings :
1) Photo got brightened up, by bumping bumping ISO, as the result photo is a bit grainy.
2) Phone screen displayed much punchier image by boosting Contrast and saturation , but the actual photo when uploaded to PC was quite natural.
3) Image size 2.3 MB, image taken through Stock cam. In good lighting conditions Stock cam is able give more control than gcam :cyclops:, gcam needs to be optimized for our A3..hope future gcams support be good

overall quality is excellent. it's flagship-like. the only nit picking I can find is an overall slight softness in the RAW files, and noticeable distortion around the corner/edges. However, it's not egregious and the overall especially low light performance is truly excellent if not the tops. Having that Sony IMX sensor really does wonders in low light, and color renditions are generally excellent as well. I can't wait to have a GCam port for A3. I used a redmi note7 port but the colors tend to oversaturate with rmn7's gcam app. Focus has been quick, though I think the software lacks a bit of polish when it comes to face recognition, something I hope they'll fix, or become fixed with a Gcam port.
The photo qualities are excellent. I can't complain, especially for the price.

Yeah, I'm using this phone for about 10 days now, and I must say the pictures from those cameras are very good. Even the selfie cam produces sharp photos with good colors. And the video from front cam is crispy. Didn't test video footage from back camera but I'm sure it'll be impressive too. I installed GCam & the picture quality got a solid upgrade (both main & front cameras), color processing, dynamic range everything got even better. Very satisfied

Hello ti all, But which gcam you use bon Xiaomi mi A3? How to know which is the best ? Mi A3 have API 2 open but not all the APK of gcam are ok right?

Please can anyone tell how much is the max exposure time (shutter speed) you can do with the rear and front camera?
And it does come with cam2api enabled by default?

It comes with cam2api. On Android 9 max for rear camera was 32 secs, at the moment on Android10 it's 0.5 secs (I just hope Xiaomi will fix this).
