Lost connection with O2 while 3 miles offshore - in full view of Bournemouth, Poole & Swanage. Came ashore, still no connection. Drove 4 miles home, still no connection. Only re-connected after power off and re-start. Had similar connection drop once before.
Is this lack of re-connection usual, or is there a fault?

Sorry for the belated reply. If you haven't yet resolved this issue, there are some remedies you can try. Sometimes, while traveling abroad, or otherwise outside of the normal coverage of your mobile provider, it may be necessary to change your band parameters within your cell radio menu. (To do this, open your dialer and enter *#"#4636#*#* and select PHONE INFORMATION from the list of options. This menu provides pertinent and technical info regarding your cellular radio (baseband), and gives you the option to change your preferred network type and band configs) But to start, I'm not very familiar with the O2 network; from my rudimentary research, it appears that its 2G, 3G and 4G coverage is vast and quite impressive overall as a global provider, claiming a 99% global 4G coverage area. So, I am in full agreement with your position -- that the disconnect you are experiencing is abnormal. Try these possible remedies:
• First and foremost, let's make sure your network configuration is optimal for O2's voice and data parameters. There are a couple of ways to do this, with the simplest being from device settings. Go to Settings>System>Advanced and select the option for Reset WiFi, mobile & Bluetooth. (Ensure that you are within a strong 4G coverage area when performing this step). Next, go to Settings>Network & Internet>Mobile Network>Advanced>Preferred Network Type. You will see a few options here, the first of which should be AUTOMATIC. Ensure that this option is set. Next you will see a menu for Access Point Names; select this option and ensure that (1) your APN is set to an O2 configuration and, if so, (2) that the parameters are correct and optimal for 02's recommended settings for your particular type of mobile plan and your region. O2's recommended APN settings, as well as a comprehensive how-to guide, can be found on 02's official website at this link:
https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android/Connecting-Android-Phone-to-Data-Services/td-p/544202 It appears that 02 can send the recommended APN settings directly to your device via texting the word ACTIVE to 2020. Once received, a normal reboot will be required.
Hopefully, these remedies will resolve your carrier disconnect issue. It is also very important that you are updated to the latest available Android OS version/build, because updates and optimizations to your radio firmware (baseband) are often encompassed within OTA update packages. If, after performing these steps, you are still experiencing the disconnect issue, please let me know. There are some more in-depth steps we can take to resolve the issue (e.g. the Cellular Radio Menu I mentioned in the beginning of this post.) There are also some fastboot commands which can be executed to more efficiently optimize your network settings to the parameters of your provider. Good luck and let me know if this works.

Hi,
Does anyone know of any app that restricts data connection to only when in WCDMA (UMTS 3G) network?
Reason why is that i use my Dopod D810 to surf the net and download files. However i have managed to rack up $320 in roaming charges for internet usage even though i am on a 1 GB XSeries plan on 3.
I was not aware that i was roaming at all. So in future, i want my phone to automatically disconnect when "Roaming".
Is there such an app? I have tried Bandswitch but i couldnt get it to do what i wanted.
use search.
There is an app called trinity hacks or something that adds this feature.
Are you sure? I have Trinity Hacks v0.3 and it doesnt seem to have this feature.
What i want is for my phone to automatically disconnect once it is "roaming" onto Telstra's network from the 3 network.
Yes,
Trinity Hacks v0.3 --> Phone tab --> 'Enable GSM/UMTS Band Selection'
Ticking this enables a new tab under 'Settings' --> 'Phone' --> 'Band'
Switch it from 'auto' to 'WCDMA'
Then you will never incur roaming charges on Telstra network.
Yeah i already have that setup.
What i want is to be able to Roam to Telstra so i get full PHONE coverage, but once it goes to roaming, i want the data connection to automatically disconnect.
What you have asked me to do is to permanently connect only to 3G which means i cannot get reception everywhere.
Does that make sense?
What you want is not possible without some serious programming! The Radio stack can be set to connect to GSM, UMTS/WCDMA or either, but you can't split voice and data functionality.
Hi,
Thanks for all your replies, but im not asking for voice and data functionality to be split. The phone can already tell whether it is roaming or on the home network. Isn't it just a matter of getting this information from the phone possibly via the OS API and then when the phone returns a value to signify that its roaming, then the program will disconnect the connection, just like pressing the disconnect button, but this time programmatically?
Im not asking for someone to write something like this, but if something already exist like this.
Maybe this reply is not needed anymore sinds the thread is one month old. Still, I use spb grps monitor. It has a lot of customization option. Maybe it has a feature that will do the trick. I'm not going to look into it myself. Just wanted to give you a headsup.
Hi guys, after installing the latest radio on my Hero I get the feeling that my mobile internet connection (both HSDPA, 3G and 2G) seem to be dropping more often than before. I haven't monitored this prior to upgrades so I can't say for sure. But is anybody having the same experience?
Also is it possible to downgrade the radio? Do you just reinstall the old radio?
Thanks.
yes i have the same issue. my mobile internet and also the gps stops to work after a while of not using the phone. i have to restart the phone to get gps back to work.
mobile internet can also be reactivated by activating and deactivating the "only 2g networks" option.
this failure sucks because i just recognize that the mobile internet is down because i didn't get push mails for a while.
I have noticed that as well
Yep me too. I can be browsing (web, market, or rss) for a while, then lose connection for a bit, then it will suddenly work again.
Can we reflash the old radio?
No need. It could be the APN settings. I was having problems on T-Mobile with HSDPA dropping and read in another post to go to the T-Mobile support page for the G2 and select Connecting to the Internet --> Set up the phone for internet surfing --> and follow the instuctions to set up a new APN. Worked for me
I have the same problem.
I have installed the new Hero ROM two weeks ago, one week ago mobile internet disappeared from my phone. Before this it was very good.
I can't find the good solution for this issue. Please help.
Same radio ROM. But there were internet for a week with this ROM.
I don't understand.
(I have tried to reflash the ROM, but not solved.)
Same problem here.
Mobile network has been unstable since I bought it.
When I turn it off for a while and turn it on again, I can't see the icon on the top bar. What I have to do is going to Settings - Wireless controls - Mobile network settings - Network operators - Select automatically.
Sometimes the connection is lost while using. I have to do the same thing like above to make it work again.
I also contacted HTC's customer service, but I haven't got any response.
Too bad!
I find if I leave it then it comes back. Every so often it goes...then the firmware eventually notices and it reconnects. Annoying. Hopefully this will be fixed when T-Mobile release thier version of the ROM update later this week.
I have the same issue, but it seems like it only happens when I leave a wirelss-zone (and not every time I do that either).
When I leave home, it will maybe 1 of 3 times not connect to 3G before I manually connect again (Settings - Wireless controls - Mobile network settings - Network operators - Select automatically)
I've just used AnyCut to create a shortcut to this menu-option so it is less annoying, but a more permanent and official fix would be great.
same thing in my one thats why i hate htc from now one loots of bugs in hero headphones led net go back to htc hd how you can release phone if is not done properly

wow, how much better is that
Guys, if u have the dropping connection concern, as I did, please follow tmobile link in previous posts or a one for your mobile provide apn settings, I've just done it and have had no dropped connections for ages
i was also having the same issue but since installing the modoco 2.6 enhanced rom with the radio ending in 07.08 all has been good.
dropping connection
Hi,
I have a g2 Touch from T-Mobile germany.
It runs Runs modaco 2.6 with the newest Radio. Dont know the number it ends on 0708.
I have the prob with dopping connections. But i cant download the settings from tmo germany, because there are no settings to download. Can anyone help me? Or Can i flash the old Radio back? And where can i get it for tmo germany?

I frequently used the Phone settings on my Treo 750 to turn off 3G in the Band settings tab when I wasn't browsing the web or downloading files. It extended my battery life tremendously. So I was bummed to see this tab missing in my new Tilt 2 Phone settings. Well, it's there, just hidden.
Navigate to
HLM\Software\OEM\Phone Setting\ShowUMTSBandPage
and change the default from 0 to 1. Now when you go into Settings/Personal/Phone the Band tab is exposed. To force GSM only and save battery, change the "Select your network type" drop down to 'GSM'. But here is where I need some guru help. When you try to OK this change you get the following message:
"If you change the bandset setting, the PDP context/Data call will be deactivated. Do you want to continue?"
I choose Yes and everything seems to be OK. The phone stays in GSM mode and I can still surf the web and get my push email and phone calls. To change back to 3G (if available in your area) just select 'Auto' in the drop down. You will again get that same warning...select Yes. Obviously you shouldn't ever select the WCDMA option.
Now, if you want to create a quick shortcut to that tab and add it to Mobile Shell or whatever UI you want, create a shortcut with this in the target line:
\windows\ctlpnl.exe cplmain.cpl,20,3
For those of you worried about the PDP warning, here is some info I found on PDP context. Maybe you can tell me what it means in english.
PDP (Packet Data Protocol) context is a data structure, which is created on both the SGSN and the GGSN of the GPRS core network and is used to contain the subscriber's session information when the subscriber has an active IP session over GPRS. When a GSM or UMTS mobile user wants to use GPRS, the handset must first attach and then activate a PDP context. The process will allocate a PDP context data structure in the SGSN that the subscriber is currently visiting and the GGSN serving the subscribers access point. The PDP context data structure will store the subscriber's IP address, the Subscriber's IMSI, the Subscriber's Tunnel ID (TEID) at the GGSN, the Subscriber’s Tunnel ID (TEID) at the SGSN, and the Subscriber’s tunnel ID (TEID) allocated by the GSN. Through the PDP context data structure, the GPRS core network knows how to route tunneled data between the mobile phone and the IP network (e.g. the Internet).
Well it sounds to me that when you are making that switch it is dumping your current session & aquiring a new one.
It would be nice ot hear what other believe would be possible consequences, but it sounds to me that if you had an active browser session (or phone call), you would lose it and in the case of the browser session any session variables or context about your web session would be lost & you would need to refresh your browser.
I have done this reg hack, and I never get that msg. I use gsm because it has a better signal where I am cause the 3G is just about dead till they put more cell towers up, but I can switch between auto and gsm, and hit ok, and I never have gotten that msg. I am using the tilt 2 on ATT.
OK, forget my original post because there is an easier way on the Tilt 2. I was browsing through all of the .exe's in the windows folder and ran across CMBandSwitching.exe. Just make a shortcut to this executable and there you have it.
U could do that, but I found that by sliding to settings/communications/phone and then scroll to the bottom you can choose band.
Don't worry about the PDP thing. All it does is force the phone to reestablish a data connection. If you had anything currently using data that will cut it off until it reestablishes the connection.

Good find. I like to leave 3G off unless I actually need it
3G On/OFF
This is funny but my AT&T Tilt 2 in GSM mode or let's say when 3G is off has a better coverage!
nice find, but is there anyway to get this to work for CDMA users?
sorry, a neophite here, how do you "navigate" to HLM/...., do you mean regedit? and how to do that too? my phone is htc tilt 2--and thanks a lot!!
OMG Thank you! You don't know how much I resented not being able to disable the 3G band like I could with my Hermes. Like most people replying, I also have issues with 3G reception in my area and this was exactly what I needed. This should definitely be included in the tips/tricks sticky post.
Why dont you use the nice little function that HTC has put on the device?
This is what I did on my htc touch pro2:
Browse to Windows/ on your device, and run the program "CMBandSwitching"
Nice little program which allows you to toggle between Auto (3G), GSM, WCDMA, and change band freq.
Just Copy this program and paste a shortcut into your start menu.
Then you can also put a shortcut on your home screen.
or you could just use one of the many 3g com manager cabs floating around that lets you toggle 3g from the comm manager tab
just install NoData from Modaco and then you re set
I enabled the Band tab in Phone settings and now I can have better reception in a couple of areas where 3G has a very poor signal. Great...
Now, if I shutdown the phone or go to Airplane mode while GSM is enabled, on powerup or on coming out of Airplane mode the phone will again go to 3G. A quick check on the Band tab shows that GSM is selected, but the phone is in GSM.
Is there a way to make this selection actually survive a power down or Airplane mode?
Thanks!
I'm running my Captivate glide on Orange network (device is unlocked).
I rooted it following all the steps shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082 (BTW, works great thanks).
I kept AT&T rom, but issue happens also with Rogers rom.
This happens only on 3G/3G+ connections.
WiFi works great.
The issue looks quite simple: data connection drops (very) often.
No more email push notifications, ...
Have to go to Settings > Network > Airplane mode : switch it on and then witch it off to get data connection back.
It is not an operator issue. My other phone(s) are using the same and data connection works.
Is this a radio rom issue ? Is there a fix ? (didn't find a thing related to that issue).
Anyone having this issue ?
Depends on how strong your network is, I have experienced this a few times.
I keep getting this now that I have had more experience with it, anyone else experiencing random sharp drops in data speed/connection?

Well, I have 4 out of 5 bars... Signal looks strong enough to me.
If I use the same SIM card in a HTC MyTouch 4G slide => Works great, no data connection drops at all !
Looks like it depends on what programs are running and using the data connection:
- email push - connection last long enough.
- when I'm running Bejive (IM) - connection last a bit less (before the 1st drop).
- when I add Skype & LoudTalks : almost every 5 minutes connection drops.
I also noticed that after a voice phone call, sometimes data connection doesn't (cannot) restart by itself ...
Here is an idea :
Is there a way to tweak Operator connection like it can be done with HTC phones : GSM + CDMA, CDMA Only ?
Because when you switch the phone to CDMA only, it uses different frequencies and allow to keep data connections while talking on the phone.
Didn't find that option in Captivate Glide settings ...

I just checked ... I don't have the "Network Mode" option in "Mobile Networks" section.
I have Roaming, allow data connection, APN, ... but not Network mode.
Weird...
I checked the operator info. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
I'm stuck ...and it keeps happening. No solution for now.

Already did that, but that was a few days ago when looking for the WiFi tethering feature ...
I'll flash it back to Rogers kernel & ROM and test.
Update: Flashed Rogers rom.
Good news is I now have the Network settings back. (AT&T rom is not the right one, for sure !)
Data connection last longer. But the issue is still here.
Still investigating...
Anyone else having this issue ?
the day before yesterday, I went to the copier room in my school and stayed for about 2 hours (too many copying). before i get out, i have no signal (mobile network not available). I need to go out to have signal back or reboot.
It happened again yesterday on the exact same location, I'm going to be there again now.
I believe it might be location wise....in my case at least.

I checked, looks like it is not linked to a specific location. I've been travelling and issue kept occuring.
Once data connection is ok, it usually stays up for 2 to 5 minutes, then drops.
"4G" symbol is still displayed - but no more data connection. Web pages not available in browser, no email sync, no more IM, ...
While data connection is down, Cellphone still works, WiFi as well.
It may be linked to an APN issue ... Or definitely a Radio ROM issue.
I'm running Baseband I927RUXKJ5.
Anyone else having this issue ?
When I got the phone the AT&T rep told me there was a known issue with the phone dropping down to lower data speed. He told me if I experienced it to get a new SIM card. Doesn't sound exactly the same but maybe try that?
I have a galaxy nexus
ROM : XenonHD 4.2.2 (tried Stock 4.2.2 for 2 weeks)
Baseband : 19250XXLJ1 (was on earlier ones as well)
Kernel : Stock
Location : Bangalore(India)
Connection : TataDoCoMo
My internet (primarily using 2g, sometimes 3g) and it drops very often.
To enable it, the below steps does NOT word:
1. Toggling flightmode
2. Restart mobile
Only one step works (75% success)
Manually search for network and select network automatically and sometimes to manually select the network.
Please help.
Update: (Strict 2g mode enabled)
I've been sitting in my seat since posting the previous post. Checked my internet and i do not have data connection. Gonna enable it now.
Even manual selection of network dint give me data connection after waiting for 5 mins.
Enabled and disabled flight mode - waited for 5 mins - no go.
Gonna restart and check - last option - no go.
Now i disabled data - strangely, i lost signal for a few second.
Enabled data again - waited for 2 mins - and walah it came.
I dont know on what basis the internet comes and goes like this. It is not humanely possible to do all these steps, just to get the internet enabled. Can anyone help me from this plight.
Can anyone please offer some advice?
You can change rom, and check if it will be fixed.
What kind of network strength do you see in “Status“ page in settings? Post a screenie.
Try a different ROM to be sure it isn‘t a network fault.

I tried a lot of methods and this worked finally. Am on latest radio release I9250XXLJ1. Browse and install it if you are not on it.
Dialed *#*#4636#*#*
selected "Testing"
Selected "Phone Information"
Scrolled down and set the option of "Set preferred network type" as GSM auto (PRL)
Noticed change in GSM Service, GPRS service.
Next time, this dint work tried the below method and finally worked.
At the bottom right corner, the properties option indicated by 3 perpendicular dots took me to change Radio Band.
I tried with the first 5 option with no network coverage and finally AUS Band started giving me uninterrupted data signal.
Success...
