Fingerprint scanner completely disabled after July 5th update - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hey guys just looking to see if anyone has ever experienced this type of behaviour before. So I believe it happened a day after I took the ota and put of nowhere my fingerprint scanner suddenly stopped recognizing my fingerprint. So I decided to check the settings and to my freaking surprise the option to configure the fingerprint settings is nonexistent! Gone! Vanished! Contacted Google support and they said to reach out to the third party store I bought it from which was from Rogers (Canada) on two year contract. So I will be heading to Rogers this weekend to see what they can do. Google representing also mentioned that if I'm not satisfied with Rogers warranty service I can contact the same Google representative and she'll help me with that. Anyone ever experienced this before?
Also worth mentioning I'm 100% stock and my phone is a little laggy and lies responsive since update smh Google smfh.

Did you try factory resetting? I know it sucks to have to reset all your apps, but something that is probably a software glitch is offered fixed by a reset.

Second this... Actually I'm surprised the Google tech person didn't insist on a factory reset after failing to get a result from the scripted "jump through hoops" nonsense they make everyone go through.

Best shot is a factory reset. I'm running beta 5 with no issues.

Uuugh done that multiple times already even tried beta 5 and here's the kicker the fingerprint gesture actually works on beta 5 for me but not pixel imprint. Google would've sent me a replacement if I hadn't cracked my screen a couple months ago! FML!

Stock Internet Browser disappeared

Just went to use my stock internet browser and it says application no longer installed and the icon isn't in the app drawer, but it shows up in the settings/applications list.
Any suggestions?
This happened to me as well. I also lost my phone app too. Haha. The only way to fix it is either 1) do a factory reset 2) install a 3rd party browser or 3) order a warranty replacement. I'm getting mine today. The factory reset only temporarily worked for me. The issue seems reoccurring.
I just factory reset. If it does it again back to Verizon. I have only had it for a week.

has this happened to to anyone so many times Verizon offered them another phone? I read if they have to give you 3 new phones they will offer you a different phone.

If you have had multiple handset exchanges (depending on the rep you get you will have to exchanged 3 to 5 times) Verizon may offer you a replacement phone (usually a CPO now).
However Verizon is not obligated to offer you a newer model only a comparable model to what you already have.
Yeah, random system apps seem to disappear. After a couple factory resets, it seems better. I've lost Clock and Core Google Services. LOL
I went through 4 inc2's before I asked verizon for an x2. All the inc's were randomly deleting different apps and I facory reset a million times. Got so sick of it. Love my x2.

Yeah, i agree. it does get frustrating; however, i would choose sense over blur any day. Hopefully htc can fix this.
II know I'm rooted so this doesn't help much, but I've never had any of these issues.. and I'm on the rooted OTA ROM.. weird.

I thought I had pretty lucky myself until it happened to me today on my rooted OTA ROM. Hopefully it doesn't happen to you. Verizon told my wife today that they expect to have a fix out by the end of the month. Who know's how accurate that is, especially since my wife wasn't real polite and the csr probably just wanted to get her off the line.
This has happened to my Incredible 2 also.
Basically what happens is:
Phone is fine for a misc. amount of time
Use the phone as normal for that time (nothing out of the ordinary)
Restart phone
Missing apps AND/OR Force close of apps
Unable to use phone (to call) in some cases
Unable to access Google Account features and Google apps
Only known fix is a factory reset, wiping entire phone
To me, this is unacceptable, but understandable. I urge anyone who is having this specific issue with their Incredible 2 to CALL VERIZON SUPPORT. 1-800-922-0204 Notate this on your account with the support rep, and get this issue on the known issues list for the Incredible 2. The rep should work with you to get a replacement.
I can confirm that this is NOT currently a known issue for the Incredible 2 with Verizon. That means that there is no "fix coming in a month" to fix the issue, since they don't even know about it enough to put it on the known issues list. Obviously that list is the major issues list and is what they push out OTA updates to try to fix. Since every Incredible 2 owner is not getting the issue, that leads me to believe that this is more of a hardware problem than a software problem, but there is a small chance I could be wrong.

Thanks for confirming. I had a feeling the CSR was blowing smoke. I have found more often than not that Verizon CSRs will tell you just about anything to get you off their lines (gotta keep those talk times down).

I am thinking that navenedrob is on to something about hardware. I don't know enough about the internal specs (ie system boards, type of ram) to speculate between the two phones. However the fact that this is being reported as happening on the Sensation as well leads me down that path. Neither phone is running the same version of Sense so unless there is a bug that carried over from 2.1 into 3.0 I would agree on hardware.

got a second hand Lg G4 and just saw the promotion???

Folks, I recently purchased a month old LG G4 from a guy and its through Verizon, well the guys has been shipped overseas(he is in the service) and I just saw the promotion for the battery, battery cradle and micro sd card and my question is this, I have the phone and of course the IMEI number but I don't have a receipt for the phone, I've contacted LG and they tell me I have to have a copy of the receipt along with IMEI number of phone, can anyone suggest anything that would get me closer to being able to get the receipt for the phone like calling the store where it was purchased or anything like that? I texted the guy and he said he is locked out of his Verizon account so he couldn't get me a copy of receipt.
love the phone though and works great.
thanks in advance.
I doubt you can do anything, you bought in a secondary market.
If you really need a battery just buy it on ebay I seen some go for 20 bucks

Not 100% sure but I might take mine back due to unresponsiveness. IF I do take it back and get the N6, I'll give you the battery pack. You'll just pay shipping. Again, I'm not too sure. Just send me a pm so I won't forget if I end up doing it
Give me a break... At least wait for the update. It's not nearly bad enough to return the phone
My choice brother. Sorry if that bothers you
I agree. If you are having lagginess and have NOT factory reset, you are doing yourself a disservice. Phone is solid. Mine was freaking out when I first got it. I suspect it was because the Carrier tech skipped the initial setup and it was freaking out. After a factory reset and finished the setup properly, it has been amazing. I use Nova btw. Supposedly some of the LG Home Launcher widgets were buggy and eating ram and resources that cause lagginess and battery draining.
You can always try to submit for the Free battery and stuff. Worst case is they tell you no. I think you have until July 15th to Submit. Unfortunately you have to have a Receipt of Purchase. So unless you have the original Verizon receipt, you will be SOL.

THIS. Mine was having all kinds of lag and miss-touches (To the point that I kind of wanted to throw it against a wall) so I opted to do a factory reset and now I have literally NO lag at all. Was even able to install the launcher I wanted but could not use prior because of how buggy my G4 was being.
So as stated just do a factory reset and then give the phone a real chance.....You will thank yourself later for it.
folks, again I'm still new to Android, when you say " factory reset" I'm assuming you start from scratch on the phone? if you do this how are you getting your information back again as far as contacts, emails, pictures and so forth?
thanks

If your contacts are on Gmail, then you won't have any issues. That goes the same for emails.
Pictures and videos must be copied first to either your PC or copy them to Micro SD card. Then you reset your device, and then copy them back. It's quite simple. Let me know if you don't understand and I'll be more than happy to give you a more detailed explanation.

For pictures and videos, just like email/contacts store on the cloud, if you've loaded Google Photos and had it auto-upload all your content, it'll always be available as well.
Now, that said, while I'm with the others on holding onto the phone and giving it time, I do realize that the actual return windows for the product are finite. It's a lot harder to sell the device later on your own (not hard, just harder) rather than leverage a return to the store and potential impact of a restocking fee. The restocking fee may be a small price to pay for the piece of mind acquired by getting out of a device you don't want. For that, you're the only one that can make the decision.
Yeah no one cares what anyone else does with their own phone but don't go around telling others it's bad. It has a bad release software. LG messed up but hopefully they can fix it soon. They already claim to have updates ready soon.

LOL! The software on this phone isn't nearly as bad as the Optimus G. At least this is manageable for most (in my case, it's no issues at all really). The Optimus G would turn into a pocket heater due to borked kernel at release.
I can only imagine what some of the crowd in these G4 forums would have done if they had the S2 back when Sammy didn't do their homework and pushed out a release that bricked the devices that took the update before they could pull it....

Never told anyone the G4 wasn't good for anyone. I just said MY phone is having the issues. I don't have lag after the reset but the miss clicks are still there and it's horrible to the point where I have to touch 6 times just to wake the screen and I have to go back and rewrite stuff because it's missing a letter. I myself want a phone without issues out of the box and that's what I thought I was paying for. Again, I'm not saying the phone in general sucks, Im just upset at the first impression I got from it

Ouch. I would say you have a lemon. A few people do have legit problems, exchanged and 1000x better.
To factory reset, go into Settings. Security. Wipe device.
Contacts, apps, etc will restore when you first sign in to your google account during initial setup. There are tons of Getting Started guides for Android. If you are new to Android, welcome.

I wouldn't say that's true. I've been following several different forums, apart from XDA, and there are A LOT of people who complain of the knock-on issue. As well as the keyboard issue (with any keyboard). Many people claim that the issue goes away after a reset, but I actually do see a lot of them return saying "I was wrong, and it took 3-4 days for me to notice it again."
I think that there is a bug in the software. If they had found it, it would have been pushed ASAP seeing as it plagues a great many people. They're still working on it... Hopefully they'll fix it soon!
Just sayin'.

Is anyone else running into this? I did a quick search, and didn't see any hits in the the Q&A section or the PureNexus ROM forum which I'm running. I think it is a somewhat common problem. The first thing google support chat asked me was if I was rooted. I said no, but is this only happening to rooted phones?

You could try flashing February stock rom, then doing factory reset, in case anything is out of kilter in software causing this.

This is now widely reported and seems to be major problem affecting lot of pixel phones. Check out the number of entries in the product support page and in the android code tracker.
https://productforums.google.com/fo...!msg/phone-by-google/QiGBJRx9oxg/Xy5_pkJZDAAJ
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=230806 - Google has marked it as fixed and status is updated as future release which means that it is a software bug.
I also had this issue but i dont have it right now. Mine got resolved by using a non-stock and non-quick charger to charge the phone. I havent faced this issue for the past couple of weeks now. Some people had success doing it and some did not. So its more of a hit and a miss. My guess is that this is a software bug caused by the battery reporting percentage
I have this bug at the moment too. Some users are reporting that a factory reset solved it for them so I have done one yesterday. Can't say yet if it fixed the problem for me too.

Thanks for you reply. I have seen reports of people sending their phone (usually the 6p but even a couple pixels) back for repair under warranty . If its a software bug and we're on the latest version of software, what could they be doing to fix it when they send it back I wonder? Make me think its hardware.
This could be indicative of a malfunctioning battery. Flashing back to bone stock would be the best troubleshooting method.

Was the replacement directly from Google? Or from your service provider.
Apparently google made a fix to this issue in upcoming updates.

The replacement was directly from Google.
Coming up to 30% soon so I'll see if it does it again. Apparently it's still happening in 7.1.2 so god knows what update it's fixed in.
I have been reporting in the Pixel community and bug report. My phone was purchased in November from the Google Store, has never been rooted, and always use the OEM charger. My phone ran great until the February patch and then began encountering the abrupt power off around 30% battery.
Android OS, Android System, and Google Play Services are always the top battery consumers. Turning off various things has had no impact. I finally contacted Google and they are giving me the run around about a replacement. The Support staff did confirm they are aware and are replacing some phones but working on a fix, which implies it is software as noted above.
I am still pushing for a replacement and will see what happens.

If its happening continuously this is probably something wrong with the battery. I have two Pixel XLs and had this happen once at around 35%! I left it powered off and recharged and this seemed to do the trick. Its clearly a software problem in that instance. So this could be two distinct issues IMO.

Issues with February delivered Pixel XLs

For those who received their XLs in February after the delay (who ordered in November/December), have you been experiencing issues? I had trouble activating the phone and ever since, my cellular connection has been spotty. Even when it says its connected, texts and calls sometimes fail to go through or drop. Despite the reviews, I have experienced some lag and freezes. And my battery life definitely does not last a day (I have to charge it twice a day for moderate to light use with 2 hours screen on time). I wonder if this is common with the new batch of XLs that were shipped out or if, I hope, I just received a faulty device.
Try flashing the new Feb factory image, it will wipe all data and be a complete factory reset. Try that it will most likely fix any issue or issues.
I'm completely stock (locked and unrooted) and have done a couple factory resets. I'm on the latest build. Would it still help? If so, how do I do it?

Oh sorry about that I looked past the part where you listed your stock and locked. Since your all factory I would call verizon and let them troubleshoot it, or if you bought through the google play store contact google cs about it, because you cant flash factory images with a locked bootloader.
Thanks for the replies! I bought it directly through Verizon and they will be sending out a replacement (in a couple weeks tho :/). I'm just wondering if anyone else with a February-delivered XL has been dealing with these issues.

No problem here. Got mine last week.
Picked up mine from a corporate Verizon store a week ago and my cell connection is garbage. No service 30% of the time for no reason. Not to mention, the wifi calling keeps disabling itself. I going to try a factory wipe and reflash a Google image to see if that helps.

Are you running a custom rom or stock ? Honestly I get better signal and performance running the rom Pure Nexus and the Elemental x kernel. If your on stock I would recommend giving Pure Nexus a try and Elemental x also.
I got my pixel xl at the beginning of feb, thru verizon, so far no problems. The pixel xl definitely doesnt get the same reception as my g3 did/does. All i can say is thank god im not having any issues with wifi calling, cuz i now get zero bars at my home. Purenexus is pretty nice, but i saw no gain in reception using it but ymmv. The only other thing is with substratum on PN, regardless which theme i choose they all set the color of links in irc for android to the same color as the background.

Thanks for the replies! I bought it directly through Verizon and they will be sending out a replacement (in a couple weeks tho :/). I'm just wondering if anyone else with a February-delivered XL has been dealing with these issues.

That's what they had told me. Though I did notice that they shipped it yesterday!

Guess what? Verizon shipped a regular Pixel instead of an XL! Verizon has been messing up and misleading at every freaking point. This is unacceptable on so many levels. And they charged me for it!
And they no doubt will make it right. Ffs anybody or company if you prefer, can make mistakes, nobodies perfect. But, because verizon is everyones favorite whipping boy any and all oopses are just dogpiled onto. Give just a tiny bit of room for human error, believe me, they undoubtedly will do something else before long to incur everyones anger.

Of course, I understand this is a mistake and human error is normal. But, it can be frustrating for someone after ordering a phone, it taking two months to be delivered with constantly being told different dates and information each time they contact Verizon, being promised a fee being waived by one rep but then being told otherwise by another, and then again being promised it but it not being applied after multiple calls. Then, the same thing occurs with a Daydream View. Then, when the phone finally arrives, it has cellular and battery issues. Then, when a replacement phone is promised, it turns out the be the wrong one. And this is just a summary. I had to speak with Verizon multiple times for different things and the customer service to address these issues was not so great.
To update on this situation, they now tell me I need to wait for this phone to arrive and activate it, in order to return it for a refund and receive the correct replacement without charge. So I still have to wait another couple weeks to enjoy a usable Pixel XL :/
I feel your pain, ordered mine dec 15th, i also kept getting diff shipping dates, was literally on the phone cancelling my order when the shipped e-mail arrived. I didnt have a clue about the vr headset until fedex dropped it off on monday cuz i had not returned their call that previous fri.
I can understand your frustration, and tbh, had forgotten the litany of mishaps you had already gone thru, i just see and read so many gripe fests against them, and most of them are from people that are mad about the locked bootloader and they then blame them for world climate change, dropping birthrates, famine, pestilence and hillary losing. Allbeit, that last one i for one would praise them for, if it were their doing.
Anyhoo, dealing with most any corporation can and often is a PITA, but ill say this, after six years, verizon has not once failed to make it right by me. The wait has rarely been very long, but it has happened.
Hope they fix it for you sooner rather then later.

I got a QB and a VS Pixel XL in February. No problems at all. I live in a rural area and both my wife and I had Samsung GS4 phones before these. I actually get a little better reception I believe.
The only problem I've run into is Trusted Voice doing its auto-disable thing, but I applied the workaround and haven't had any problems since.
My battery life is really good. I play Pokemon Go with my kids and use my phone as a hot-spot, and I can still get through a full day. Though, if I'm around a charger when the phone hits 50% I just charge it anyway.

That's good to hear! It means I just received a faulty device and the replacement should work fine. I was worried that the new batch may have all come out like this since perhaps Google rushed their production by reducing time for quality checks or something like that.
I still haven't received a replacement :/ Verizon keeps sending a regular Pixel by accident.
Anyways, from the many conversations I've had with them, they eventually admitted that the February XL's have had multiple reports of issues with activation, like mine did.
Did anyone else have activation and cellular issues? If so, how are your phones doing now?

Phone is now starting to exhibit glitches/problems

So I've had my XL2 for almost a month - original was RMA'd due to poor quality display at the beginning of the month. Anyways, everything has been great up to about the last 3-4 days. In that time I've noticed the following:
1. Phone would not stay on LTE. Only HSPA+ despite 3 other people(who were with me) with the same carrier all having LTE service all day. I restarted my phone 2 times. Toggled airplane mode several time. It only grabbed LTE for a few minutes then reverted back to HSPA+ when I would turn off cellular.
2. Android Auto. My vehicle detects the phone, in-car application launches, but either there is no sound from any song or when I hit play, song is automatically paused everytime. I have to unplug/plug phone for it to all start working. This doesn't happen everytime, but it's done this about a half dozen or so times now.
3. Last but by the far the most annoying and worst. Randomly, when I'm interacting with the Google keyboard or Swiftkey, the phone just starts to spaz out. Random apps open, incorrect text being entered(for example, I type "m" and instead "z" and 3 commas get entered in instead, and just total loss of control on the phone(can't keep anything open or incorrect actions happen).
So I'm the point where either I go for a factory reset(I hate doing this) or I contact support and see about getting an RMA.
FYI: I'm on the November update.
Went through 2 really blue displays to get what I thought was a keeper yesterday, my 3rd device. But now today I noticed the screen flashes bright white when going into always on display. Quality control must be non existent between Google & LG.
It's just unbelievable to me that a $1000 device is so poorly made or passed off as ready to be sold. I've been sticking up for Google during most of the screen blue shift fiasco, but after this last string of incidents, I'm losing faith completely. This is especially apparent when I see that my wife's iPhone X has had nothing to this magnitude.
I've been having major, major problems with SwiftKey myself, to the point where I no longer even want to use this phone until the situation is resolved.
Everything was fine, even on the beta, and then suddenly about a week or so ago - as you mention - SwiftKey just starts going nuts. Incorrect predictions, mistaken input, slow/lag, etc.
I wonder if it's something with the November Security Patch Update or SwiftKey's cloud network or what.

Seeing as you have to start from scratch anyway, I'd try a factory reset first. You can always RMA it if the problem persists. Why risk losing your "good" Pixel 2 XL for one that may have a crummy screen restarting the RMA cycle?
Also, was Swiftkey recently updated, like in the last 4 days or so?

The RMA is a little better than the previous one in terms of how extreme the shift is, but overall it's not anything worth keeping. The bottom firing speaker buzzes like you wouldn't believe at 60% or higher volume. I don't recall the original one doing this although I did read in another thread that pretty much every phone is doing this.
If the replacement is worse, I'll send it back. It's not like it's a hassle for me. It's pretty much the same doing a factory reset.

So, I guess the answer you wanted to hear for your either or situation is do an RMA... Good luck with it.

I pretty much wanted to hear if anyone else is seeing these issues. Also, this replacement that I have now is a mid October build.
