Galaxy Tab S4 s pen question - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

Hey there xda,
I have a question regarding odd s pen functionality. I am here to pick your brains.
My brand new tab s4 SM-T830 came with a possibly defective pen. The pen is always on. A cm from the screen or so it displays the cursor correctly, but a bit closer the cursor disappears and the pen is immediately active. It writes without touching or any button pressing. Instead of showing the cursor till a screen touch occurs it swipes the screens or long presses buttons or, where applicable, writes. The pen basically non-stop touchlessly interacts with the screen.
I tried switching tips, no fix. I tried the pen on an older note 10.1 2014 edition, the weird behaviour is on. I tried the old note 10.1 2014 pen on the new S4 and the pen behaves correctly and as expected.
Is this a bug or a feature? Is this behaviour intended for this pen model or is it a faulty behaviour? What would you suggest as a fix?
Android 8.1.0 ARK4
The device came from a bigger chain store so it is unlikely that they'd replace the pen only and I already set up this tablet so nicely... I am interested in possible solutions other than resetting and returning it. But ultimately if need be i will do so.
Thanks for your kind answers and help in advance.

Faulty pen. The calibration distance is off. Possibly something assembled incorrectly in it. I have 4 different S-pens from different devices and they all behave the same (correctly) as the new one that came with my S4.

Thank you Note10.1Dude.
I have contacted the seller and requested further advice on the warranty procedure.

For further reference: The tablet has been returned to me in working condition. I can not see in the documentation if a new pen was supplied or if the original was serviced. The tablet was refreshed to Android 9, not something I asked for or wanted.
It has obviously been something for the warranty repair center.
Thanks for your help with this.

[Q] Do I have a faulty S-Pen?

Hi all
I have a weirdly frustrating problem with my new Note 2. I have noticed it since day one but thought it was me using it wrong. But I think I have got to the bottom of the issue.
When you hover the pen above the screen, sometimes it acts as if you are touching the screen. For example, if you were to hover over the Skype app shortcut, it will open the app. And during web browsing it will act like the pen is being held on the screen so it scrolls the page. It's does this while swiping across home screens and anything you can think of that you can select.
However, this seems totally intermittent. Most of the time it doesn't do it, but when it does it seems to become worse. I've only tried this once, but at one time it was doing this CONSTANTLY. I just put the pen back into the phone and removed it, and the issue seemed to disappear.
I am making sure I am not holding down the button on the pen. If I do, it does that snipping thing, so holding down the button isn't the issue and is acting like normal.
Any idea what is going on here? Do I have a faulty pen? :S
I would say its more likely you have a faulty screen as the spen itself has not got much in it that can go wrong.
Yes you have a faulty S-Pen
I had the same problem with my S-Pen, and the white part of the pen was a littel loose, I changed the S-Pen and the problem disappeared

I'm not sure what to do.
I bought it from Carphone Warehouse on Friday. Should I contact Samsung about it first or should I go back to Carphone Warehouse with it?
It's an intermittent problem so I don't really want them to give me hassle with proving it's faulty...
Don't mean to double post, but I just found a thread with the exact same issue. It's the pen for sure,

NOTE II Screen Fault

Has anybody else had any problem with the screen faults on their Note II?
I'm now on my THIRD one, the first 2 developed a very fine grey line going across the screen (left to right in portrait mode, top to bottom in landscape) within hours of being powered up!
both from totally different suppliers and with different build dates, surly I cant be the only unlucky one to have 2 do this?
Any technical boffin who could give a reason for it, could it be something I'm doing wrong? PC sending some too much power when charging, being squashed in my pocket etc etc?
Both where untouched/unrooted etc, Ive attached a picture, looks worse in real and very annoying in movies, or playing fast scrolling games etc.
Im just panicking that its going to happen to my third one now!!
Sorry bro only you afaik.
I dont have it and also no one had reported it before
Yep, this is happening to my Note II as well. I can confirm there is a line that looks exactly like yours.
However, it went away after a while, and then it appears again. This has happened twice already and it's at the exact location.
So I am not sure if that is good news or bad news. I have this unit for less than 2 weeks.
Honestly, looks like a bad TAB connector (the method using to attach the row/column of pixels to the circuit board that tells them what color to be). This usually happens due to years of repeated heating and cooling coupled with physical stress. On a new phone? that is defective.... I wonder if we have more than one screen manu, and one of them is making bad screens.
That's terribly unlucky!
I just checked my GN2, no screen faults at all thankfully!!
I had it on my first note2, exactly what you have there ! And I got it replaced. Now second note 2 and I have not this issue

Checklist for a new Note 10.1 Owner?

Finally bite the bullet and bought the 32GB LTE version. It will arrive this week.
This is technically my 1st tablet, always only use laptops and cellphones. I have a Note 2 and now a Note 3 so I thought the tablet will be similar.
I bought a Nexus 10 before but I gave it to my daughter within a month.
1. So what are the things I should check when I get the tablet to know that I have a good and not a defective one?
2. What are the recommended apps? Is it the same apps that I have on my phone? Will the purchased phone apps work on it?
3. Haven't checked in a while but is there still a problem in triggering the knox counter when we root or flash custom ROMs?
Thanks guys. I guess I'll just ask more when I get it and encounter some problems.
Some people have reported light bleeding around the edges of the display, the pen input seeming to be off a few millimeters, creaking on one side or the other and some get really warm on the back during multitasking. MIne has none of these lol. I would also connect it to a bluetooth keyboard and make sure you don't have the disconnect problem that was initially prevalent. I think it has been less common with newer units though so samsung must have caught the problem eventually. I use many similar apps between my phone and tablet. The great thing about an android tablet it that it can even sideload apps that are designed only for phones meaning you have about 1 million or so to choose from. Screw the Ipads 475,000 lol. I run gmd gesture and spen control and tasker as must haves. I would recommend getting note buddy, secure settings, and external keyboard helper pro as well. I automate mine to turn on my bluetooth and connect to my touchpad anytime my usb keyboard connects to the tablet. and removing the spen using the note buddy plugin changes pauses and unpauses gmd gesture control so It doesn't interfere with writing or drawing. Spen board switcher is also nice to set your imei to change depending on insertion or removal of the spen. stylus beta is faster and more accurate than the samsung keyboard that is based on it. I use nova since touchwiz is a pain to me and i use the 4 window multiwindow mod. Multiwindow manager xposed modules and the one to make any app multiwindow are all musts as well as penwindow manager and pen window launcher. Using gmd spen and gesture you can actually launch penwindow at any time using a simple finger or pen gesture you set up without going into air command. Basically though any android app should run.
Oh and yes knox still gets tripped but if you bought and accidental protection plan its still worth rooting in my opinion especially with cleanrom 2.0r2

What to check...
- Loose Speaker Grills
- Lightbleeding (having lightbleed is normal in LCD's just depends on the severity)
- Loose S-Pen in Silo (activate and deactive the s-pen functions due to it not sitting in the silo properly)
- Loose IR blaster
- Creaky Device
- Dead Pixels
- Screen coming apart from bezel
- Severe Battery Drain (most likely motherboard issue)
The ones listed in red don't bother trying to fix it just return it and get a new one, don't expect to find these problems as they are not common however some people have experienced them so just something to look out for.
The other ones just depend on your level of leniency.

[Q] issue with my Spen, please help

My note P605 has a dead area on its screen where using fingers is normal but not with thr Spen, when i draw a line through this area, the line will be coroupted.
This is a link to the screen shot which will show you my problem.
Please help me if you have any solution for this.

All I can say is that the touchscreen driver is pretty messed up in general. There are multiple issues on this tablet, like shaking when you hold something, multitouch not working properly and touchinput dropping for no reason.
I'm not sure if your issue is hardware or software related (could be both imho) but I'm pretty sure the touchscreen driver will get some bugfixes in the next update. It's extremly needed and Samsung should be aware of it...

You don't have a magnet case on your tablet do you? I know that that can cause issues with the S-Pen.

Thank you for your reply. I will try reinstall the firmware using the kies software. Hope this may work otherwise, i will return it to the shop. Because i'm in Vietnam so i did not have the official warranty of this device.
Happy Lunar New Year guys!!
no hope
It's not work guys!! even i flashed it back to stock may be this is a hardware failure (( have to return it and take my money back
Hi , I had the same prob with my spen . can't write on parts of the screen an its really frustrating . An LCD replacement cost $220.
Being an engineer my self , I went to buy some prying tools and open up the back cover of my note p605. Guess wat. The wacom ribbon cable was slightly detached from the connector . With my newly bought tools , I reattach the ribbon cable and YES!! My s pen works like new again.

would this fix the "dead" zones near the edges of the screen? I have those and everyday they get worse to the point that i have something like an 8inch-screen area to draw.

S-Pen issues

Just got my Note 7 SD and it seems the S Pen is not as responsive as it has been on the Note 5 and 4. From what I recall even the slightest touch registered but with the 7 you need to press hard. Is this normal or is mine faulty?
EDIT: seems to only happen when selecting something (using it as a mouse) and not when drawing

I'm having a similar issue. The pen isn't scrolling well and selecting anything takes multiple taps.
I sont have this issue, it works just as the 4 and 5 would
Same here, I used Note 5 SPen on my Note 7 and it registers with the slightest touch but Note 7 SPen takes a bit of pressure. I might go buy new SPen, or maybe there's some way to adjust its potentiometer.
My s pen works fine, no issues of any kind
with my replacement, the s pen behaves a little weird, when lifted from the screen, it is like I have not lifted it, it keeps writing! this makes imposible to write somerhing, as it does not stops and the letters get conected, so, my s pen is over sensible!
