RK3288 TV Box - Philips, Sony, TCL Android TV

Hi guys. I own Rk3288 TV Box that runs 5.1 Android. When i try to run IPTV on it, kodi keeps buffering for ages (IPTV tested on other devices and works like a charm). Even loading channels list takes few minutes. I figured that the problem is in the outdated kodi and since i can't install newer versions of kodi on lolipop I would like to update the box's firmware. After some digging i've found that there is no official update beyond 5.1 but i've also found custom 7.1 .2 firmware for Ugoos boxes that run on the same RK3288 chip. I was wondering if i can flash it to my box anyway? Or is it a bad idea?

Very unlikely. You could try and risk a brick but simply relying on the same SoC as reference for custom Ron to install is unfortunately not working. If the PCB and and all its components are identical, it could probably work, but only the SoC is not enough.

Damn, i was really hoping for it to work. Box seems to be decent but it just suffers from lack of updates.

There are chinese boxes from different "brands" which are internally 100% identical. If you have a custom Ron for those, there is a high probability this Rom will work for all those devices.
It's a guess and you could still try, but there is a risk of hard bricking the box.
Have you tried to play around with the Kodi buffer settings to get rid of the stuttering?

Yeah I tried that. I'll look for similiar boxes and try what you said. Hopefully it will work. If not i'll just order a new one. Won't really loose anything becouse the box in it's current state is pretty much useless.

[Q] Question about HOX development

Why is the development for HOX going at such a slow rate compared to other phones??
i know some of you will properly go "you'll get 4.4 fast enough" when i say this..
But yea, 4.4 is out, is even out for Samsung Galaxy S2, which was my phone before the HOX.. I really enjoyed the development there.. I've had my HOX for about 10 months now, and the development rate is SOOOO slow
It's a great device without doubt.. but i keep wanting more because of the slow development
i'm even thinking about buying a new phone only because the development is better
Even for 4.2 and 4.3 many of the other phones were first.. Samsung Galaxy s3 has 4.4 too.. i know that samsungs devices may have sold a bit more than the HOX, but still .. so many people in here and so many roms (which i'm grateful for), but yet, so slow development and it's just the same rom's all over and over with just some minor tweaks which is very hard to tell apart..
TL : DR = I'm just being sad because HOX development is so slow compared to other phones, even older phones..
It's probably because devs moved away to other (newer) phones without TEGRA3 !
Most phones runs on for instance snapdragon, those roms can't "just" be ported to tegra. That's also keeping dev work slow. It's so much work. When you have 2 snapdragon phones it's easier........

Thanks for the answer! ..
I guess that Tegra is kinda bad then?, kinda the thing to move away from when picking a new device? (development wise)..
But yea, i still miss the development though.. and when looking on an older phone (Galaxy S2), running a Cortex-A9
Tegra is not bad...it's just difficult to make the best out of it...

A9 has been ported to the M8.
If this is possible I'm sure someone may be able to port it to the M9.
I however am not great at porting so it won't be me, but I'd like to see MM on the M9.

If I'm understanding the situation correctly (a dubious bet at best), the A9 to M8 port is still the stock Sense experience. Going from that to an AOSP ROM will involve quite a bit of work. It probably not possible - or at least not very worthwhile - to build a stable AOSP ROM of the newest version of Android on the M9 using another device's firmware.
On a happy note, HTC has said that the M9 is getting Android 6.0. The exact timeline was somewhat unclear. The consensus seems to be that it will be releases somewhere at the end of this month or the beginning of January.

Both m8 and m9 are being tested now for Android 6.0.
A more precise timeline will come once more time is tested on the devices and fixing bugs.

I havent done a port before, but I think there may be some issues since A8/M8 are 32bit and M9 is 64.

Thinking about getting the Swift...

But there's a lot of other options (Moto G4, etc) for not so much more, I like the removable battery and the way the back looks. I've heard some negative about the GPS, but since it has a S410, is it the antenna or software?
The camera seems to lack some in taking pictures outside in daylight too, from what I have read.

The camera is really great, best i ever had and it's the cheapest device i ever bought.
Gps is good enough, surely tops all mediatek devices and is as good as a 250 bucks sony m4 dual for example. Accuracy after fix is very good, fix is super fast with network, in airplane mode without any supplementary data the first fix is slow (around two minutes).
So if you're outside your country and want fast fix with no network the first day you need to be patient. But that is a problem most devices have and it is only of you have no data, no wifi to get the agps data downloaded.
So i would recommend the device.

I think if I had to buy now, I might take the G4 Play for the bigger battery, but I'm still quite happy with the Swift.
It's a tie, I think.
The Swift has a gyroscope that is missing of the G4 Play. The latter one has bigger battery.
I'm perfectly happy with the Swift (especially if you can grab it on 99£ promotion) but neither will be a bad decision

I would not buy it again. Mainly because of the battery. It does not last a full day and the fact that even though it is removable, this does not help. I have not found the possibility to buy neither a battery nor an external charger.

I'd get a Wileyfox Spark+ instead of the swift. It has the same specs but feels a lot nice in the hand. Better finish and it just feels a lot more premium. Normally it's also the same price.

"Android O - 8.0" PossIble for Zenfone 2?

Hello everyone, it is possible to receive custom ROM "Android O" for our Zenfone 2 ???
O was just announced, we're going to have to wait a little longer before we can know if it's possible, and a lot longer before it's actually built.

I wouldn't say completely. Google is laying out minimum hardware requirements for stuff like audio, vr and ar which our old phone may not mean.
But do I have confidence that our devs will make everything else work? Yes, completely. Although it's gonna take a long time. I will be elated if N hits stable.
Since the question of this topic can't really be answered, someone knows how long statistically can a device be supported by custom roms? I mean maybe Android Z is too far fetched, but android P for example?

Hardware is the least of our problems, considering the one in Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML for example) is more than adequate.
Google making up it's own hardware requirements is nothing more than pandering to the idea of planned obsolescence to be honest so that they can sell newest phones.
I think that if the devs can get their hands on viable drivers that support the hardware in our devices and are compatible with Android 8, then technically, it shouldn't be an issue.
For Oreo, google would be pushing certain updates (fixes, etc.) not as a standalone feature, but something that would work in the same way as Windows and MacOS system updates do within the same OS version.
We know Windows updates usually work on a variety of hardware if the Windows as an OS is the same... the only thing that you also need are drivers to properly support the hardware in question (which can be difficult if the hardware is ancient, but I doubt this would apply to Zenfone 2) - this especially applies to upgrading from say Windows 7 to Windows 10 for example as some features like a microphone might stop working if the hardware in question was say from 10 years ago. Works on say Windows 7 for example because Vista drivers were made for the hardware in question which were compatible with Windows 7 to a point, but for Windows 10, compatibility between drivers for older Windows was not maintained and new drivers need to be written.
So, large OS replacement would likely depend on hardware drivers support and updating the OS sequentially shouldn't be an issue if the drivers exist - if they don't... then it's a problem.
Manufacturers tend to stop supporting hardware after a certain time... OEM's are even worse.
If we can find drivers independently from a company that produced it, then it might be possible to find more recent drivers that work.
In case of GPU's (or any other hardware inside your PC), you wouldn't rely on the OEM for drivers. You'd go to AMD's or Nvidia's websites to download latest drivers.

Should I get this phone?

Hi guys, currently using Mediapad M5 but I'm starting to get a little bored and frustrated with things I thought I could live with like no headphone jack and no ear speaker. Thinking about getting the Mate 20 but I have a concern. I'm a dedicated user of Nova Launcher and have read about people having difficulty changing the launcher. Is there something I can look out for when buying the phone to ensure I have a version that will allow me to delete the Huawei launcher or change the default? Also I'm interested in anything else you guys can advise me to look out for. I'm in NJ and I use ATT. I'm assuming I should be looking for the international version, but other than that I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hello there!
I am a big fan of big phones and I understand why you would want this phone, its dual speakers are great and headphone jack sound is the best I have heard with dolby atmos.
You can only change launcher on global version (EVR-L29) like mine, non-stock launchers work great!
I suggest you to buy the global version and not chinese for less bloatware, working notifications, working 3rd party launchers, fully working rom out of the box and gapps.
There are 2 versions of the phone Global and Chinese; Global version is EVR-L29 while the chinese version has 2 variants - normal EVR-AL00 and a branded china telecom version EVR-TL00
I personally got my phone from a local store near my home which luckily had the evr-l29 in stock, but I suggest to look on amazon for internation version or ask some people here

I'm in the USA, and I agree with Omer.
I'm in the USA and have this phone. It works great on att but here is the problem. With a locked bootloader you have no options once Huawei stops supporting it. I have the Chinese version so you deal with little quirks here and there as well.
I got mine when I was in hong Kong. Everything works perfectly including google, nova launcher. And works in Canada on all networks so I assume the US should be good as well.

I initially thought that 7.2 inches is too small to watch movies. 8.4 or 10.5 would be better. BUT after a few weeks, this is the perfect size for consuming media for me and it's light enough for the pocket. I don't miss my tablet at all. I sold my phone, tablet and laptop and only use this Mate 20 x and a PixelBook. Happy as hell!

Get it, You won't regret it. Best phone I've ever had. I replaced my Note 9 that I had for only 2 months with this phone. And I barely use my tablet now.
But make sure you put a glass screen protector and a nice case before you use it. The glass one on Amazon is perfect.
The only thing I don't like is Telegram App does not always toast new messages. The OS automatically kills some apps that run too often in the background.
