Havoc vs Pixeldust - which is better - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi,
I'm looking to move from Stock ROM of P2XL to some CUSTOM ROM. I see that Havoc and Pixel Dust are great.
But the question is, which is better in terms of battery&Magisk hide?
I'm having troubles with Magisk Hide on STOCK so I would think to move on the custom one.
Also I don't play games, so I do not need high performance.

If you're looking an improvement, if any, in battery life, your best bet would be stock + kernel. Not much from custom roms these days with speed or battery as it's just down to customization nowadays. Google seems to know what's best for their own product for optimization. It's tough for one person to optimize something better than a company with many coders, testers, and resources working on a product that they made themselves.

Do you have a recommendation for a kernel??

Hi,
Thank you for your reply
I know that the stock ROM is the best option available, but I'm having trouble with Snapchat/GPay as they've stopped working.
Snapchat is constantly banning me as they say that I'm rooted. That's why I'm looking for a good custom ROM
But as the @blaaaazedup said, what's the best kernel in your opinion?
Regards,
Vortuks

ElementalX by flar2. His work has been around for years and knows his stuff, just like Franco. I'm a bit hesitant to try kernels from new developers as I've seen many make a couple of patches and stop while flar has a proven track record.

Do you use GPay on a March Update?
I have a problem with that, as the GPay says that I've altered my device in someway(rooted/unlocked bootloader).
I'll try stock(March update) with Magisk Canary.

This. I feel exactly the same way, but at the same time, both the kernels you named have their own apps specifically for their kernels, so it makes the user experience better as well. Other than that, it just works, lol.

I was using stock+rooted for a long time and noticed the SafetyNet was failing, so I just recently switched the DU and now it's passing the SafetyNet no problem.
But really, there isn't much to custom roms nowadays besides a bit more customization. My favorite would probably be the bottom brightness in the QS page.

I Might Be Wrong But I Think This Phone Does Not Need Custom Roms

I had the gsm version of the GN on Tmobile and now i have the CDMA/LTE Version with Verizon and I got to say this is the first phone that I can actually say there is no need for a custom rom. I had the galaxy s, mytouch 4g, htc sensation and on all those phones a custom rom was always a must and that is not the case with this phone. I have tried many custom roms on here both gsm and cdma and I still havent found one that runs any better, faster or smoother then the stock one. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the developers working on this phone but thats just my opinion I wanted to share with everyone specially the people new to this phone. All you need is root and your good to go for a few custom mods and wireless tethering
No phone needs a custom ROM. A lot of people want custom ROMs. Some may want them more than others. You're happy with the stock setup and thats great. Doesn't mean everyone is.
True thats why I said I might be wrong. Just expressing my thoughts about this phone so far
Custom roms ruin phones. Too many issues. I dont care if they make certain parts better; they always cause more issues than it's worth IMO.

I agree. I am running 4.0.3 but it's stock.

I agree. Not that I'm ungrateful to the modders/devs but I don't know how many times I've seen "smooth as butter, no bugs, ultra fast" etc only to have multiple issues with a ROM.
I totally disagree. My Nexus is running much better after rooting and running a custom ROM. And I have absolutely no issues to speak of other than better battery life and a noticeably faster phone.

I'm on AOKP build X1 with Leankernel 1.1.0. Custom voltages as well.
I'm on the fence about this, might give a custom from a try soon. Think I'll stick with the stock kernel for a while though.

Many people get a development-friendly Google Experience phone such as this for the express purpose of using custom ROMs. Many others just want a straight Android phone with no TouchWiz/Sense/Blur on it and that gets timely software updates. To each his own (though I like to push the boundaries of Android's potential and try various ROM/kernel/mod/theme combinations). Yes, custom ROMs often have bugs in them (our devs often work alone or with small teams for free and squeeze dev work between job and family life - besides, even stock has bugs, and Google has legions of coders and testers). In addition to some bugs, though, they usually offer performance, features, and eye candy not available on stock.
Has anyone seen John Connor?
this is what I'm on all stock rooted and clockwork recovery. battery life is great and I don't have the problems that some people have experienced with google apps and with the market not restoring etc. and like I said I have tried custom roms on both the GSM and CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus. just sharing my experience on both phone also to add Verizons Network runs 2-3 times faster then Tmobile's Network in Los Angeles.

i have to agree. i am rooted but find no rom got my interest. maybe cm9, but it's not stable yet.
my main reason to root my phones have always been to remove all the sh!t that verizon puts in their phones, so with this one being 90% crapware free,i feel no need to root it.
A ROM may not be necessary, but a new launcher for sure. Nova launcher allows enough customization to do most things.
Roman just released a "milestone" ROM version of aokp that's solid and ships with stock kernel. His drop down toggles are the best.
Its my daily driver now for sure. I hit it hard flashing since I bought this phone, but need to take a break and this ROM is it for me. And I'm sticking with stock kernel just to keep GTA 3 working

OxygenOS 3.2.4 still has random reboots

Change log says they fixed it, however mine never had random reboots prior to this latest release.
Since this release, if I am using Google Maps, it goes maybe an hour before the phone just reboots itself. Happened 3 times in 4 hours on a ride on Sunday, which is a pain in the ass when you are on a motorcycle up in the Mtns on unfamiliar roads, and so you have to pull over and stop, fish it out of your jacket pocket, take off your gloves so you can use your fingerprint to unlock it, open up Google Maps and restart the navigation...
Anyone else seeing this? Never had it happen until this latest release. I tried wiping the cache... Phone is completely bone stock, never rooted or unlocked, etc...
Rebooting during google maps happened before 3.2.4.
I experienced it, too, but not since installing Cyanogenmod 13. Not sure if I'm just lucky or if the problem is fixed on it.

How is CM13? What features and functions did you have to give up? Anything buggy or not working with it?
To be honest, I have not played with ROMs in like 2 years or so... The stock ones got good enough that I didn't see the need and I don't really need root for anything. But if they truly work better than stock, then I will give it a shot.
I don't need a gazillion options and tweaks. I want simplicity, elegance, stability, speed and battery life... A little off topic I guess, but it's my thread so that's ok if it addresses my problem in my original post, right?

I haven't used CM in years, but I'm loving it. Lots of little features that make the overall experience great.
The camera quality is pretty good, but I think there's still room for improvement.
I don't think I've given up any features, but I gained several. Automatic do not disturb is included, too.
There are other flavors of CM custom roms, but I like what the official version brings.
It's also been quite stable overall. Same or better than oos from what I can tell.

Yeah, seems like a common problem. I think that it has only happened when using Google Maps and listening to music on my wired headphones. Although this morning I plugged my phone in to my PC to copy off a few pics, and about 3 minutes later I want to do something on the phone and it had turned itself off.
I don't have them. never had with this device.

Same here never had a random reboot
Guys, please don't take offense to what I am about to say... I don't really care about people that don't have the issue. A common problem means that it simply is common, it doesn't mean that everyone or even most people will have it.
Just replying that you don't have the issue, serves absolutely no purpose. Lol
Just had three random reboots. Had reboot before while on maps. This time it was on latest update and doing texting

I'm also having the issue when using Waze or Google Maps navigation, and only when using navigation which may point to this being an issue with the Phone and GPS. I upgraded my phone to 3.2.4 but my phone is still restarting.

custom ROMs

Why have i not seen any custom Roms yet for this wonderful phone?
Lol, I believe it's due to the Pixel being kinda expensive maybe when the price drops we'll see more developers joining the Pixel wagon. All the development is currently over on the OnePlus side of the fence
Because we're all waiting for you to release some
My guess is because TWRP is still getting stablized and because of the pain in the ass associated with a/b partitions on the device.

I don't think this is correct. Pixel XL has nearly zero rom choices... Purenexus and a few others but it's not there. I think Rom development is dead.. 6P was the last great development phone at least for rootable on Verizon.

The one plus devices have great support. I do believe it's because of the pricepoint
Rom's suck no matter what something doesn't work right and with this phone getting updates for 3 years I wouldn't even consider a rom at this point. The only time I use a rom is to get latest Android on a phone that doesn't get anymore updates.

Rom developement isn't dead or else there wouldn't be one plus activity or 6p maintenance. Pxl2 is new and TWRP isn't even stable. It's still in early beta.
If anyone is pissed off that there device does something stupid or if they want center clock or AdAway, there will be rom development. I know AdAway is a root app, but it's an option that there is a demand for. They're will be ROMs as long as they're bootloader unlockable and manufacturers lack the options we need
And as far as custom roms "sucking", must not be running the right roms cause of had great experiences with a half dozen different ones.

Rom development is mostly dead on google phones since the first pixel, and it has nothing to do with the price point. People still buy these phones and they still want things associated with custom roms. My guess is that it may be due to the partition thing.
I remember it being a huge pain in the butt to install a rom on my first pixel. They make it harder i guess.
But I'm still hopeful.

I can build ASOP rom with Gapps built in but I can't get the gapps to work when I boot the phone... I get a null error when I try to setup the phone and if I skip it I cant get any gapps to load. I think that has something to do with it.

Pixel ROMs ain't dead... Maybe trickier, but not dead.
Ps. A true Mastermind can't resist the urge to mess with something that they can't or are told they can't mess with.
I just went and looked at the pixel XL forum. They have Pure Nexus, RR and EX kernel so if that is any indication of where this might go in more than happy with those choices...
We'll definitely have some cool ROMs for our device

The latest version has been released in joshuous' experimental builds telegram. Flashed from EXKM on 10.0.6 EU and seems to be flying so far. Changelog below.
For OP7+ Variants
* This is a proof of concept build where I have not split out sched boost code from Walt code and disabled Walt. This will allow us to use pelt fully while continuing to use caf's powerhal.
Apologies to the mod who edited previously, i forgot about the link rule!

6 hours on screen with stock kernel with 45
% remaining.
Nothing can compare to stock kernel.
anyway, i flashed it to check it out and see for myself... letting it settle in a few days then i'll see...
on another note, i did have an issue with DT2W but fixed it by enabling it in the OS but disabled it in EXKM now DT2W works perfectly. FPR also is working great!
Thanks!

Nice! Let us know how you get on. I'm really enjoying it. I realised how my FPR was really bad on bluspark once I switched to this - you kind of go.... Oh yeah that's how it's supposed to work!
On battery usage it's obviously not for comparison to your own individual usage, I said it just for reference that I noticed a significant improvement given my typical usage. Milage will vary but I feel this is the best balanced kernel for me at this time, so sharing the find with others.
just installed it on my one plus 7t pro . Everything working fine as of now. I would like to give it some time to settle down and then report on battery life . The battery life is real bad on the 7t pro.

Not bad! its pretty good. as of today i have gotten about 4 hrs SOT (after removing it from charger) and still at 88% and I use it pretty heavily and on almost max brightness... i was also getting decent battery life on stock and other Kernels though so not 100% certain yet but seems to be pretty smooth with no real issues

EXKM gives me an error, says unzip error or something below. How did you root the device, via magisk patched boot img, right? I suspect issues with my root. I'm not able to mount system as read write

Flash the either the stock or patched boot.img in EXKM. Here's the latest Magisk-patched boot.img from 10.0.6.HD65AA:

Is the above boot img from tmo?

I got same issue before, your EXKM's version is too old.

No, it's the non-T-mobile version.

Question Favorite A13 ROMs?

Of the various ROMs available for the OP 9 Pro that are running A13, what's everyone's favorite and why? Currently looking at StagOS, PixelExtender, and Paranoid Android, but not really sure what the respective pros and cons of each are.
Oficial Beta 2
I havent tried any of the A13 custom roms since im waiting on some features to get added. But i have tried the A12 versions and my favorite so far is the blissRom. Its has the most features that I am looking for and I had the least amount of problems on that rom.
I am on Xtended using microG - even if it does not supports sign-spoof
I also tried COS but ... custom is better for me

Yes, I really like the A13 Official. Looks like the A12 was a test for this 13. I love it.
I would really like to see the official riceDroid rom for our device in the forum.
This is the best rom i ever used and has very supportive developers, but unfortunately we got only some unstable A12 releases for it and no release for A13 so far...

If you don't mind me asking, what do you prefer about the official OOS13? Is it just more stable than all the custom alternatives?

Hi, of course, I've been using beta 2 since launch and I come from beta 1, just so far I haven't noticed any problems, zero. I got tired of trying out custom roms, several of them, and I never had a lack of bugs, in addition to problems with excessive battery consumption. Anyway, after trying several different roms, definitely the best and least problematic and the original to use daily. (but attention, I'm just curious and I like to fiddle around on the phone, I'll always try it again, just because I like doing these things, it's like a hobby for me)

Stock Rom I spend the day listening to music on YouTube or Spotify (always with the screen off) I get home around 5 pm always with more than 50%. Custom Roms always under 30%.
