I'm trying to figure out how I can open apps using voice control. I've tried "ok, Google", but it keeps telling me it needs permissions that I can't find based on the tree guidance it gives. My goal is to be able to open my garage door while on my motorcycle. I have an Insteon garage door opener installed and it will be controlled by Amazon Alexa. My plan was to say, "ok, Google, open Amazon Alexa." Then I'm hoping to be able to use the same voice control to tell alexa to open the garage door. If there's a simpler solution, I'd love to know it.

2 different cables / adapters, one for automatic entering of car dock mode, the other for automatic entering of desk dock mode.
I've been searching all over this site and the net trying to find anything comparable to what I envision. I see that HTC has one out for the One X, but I would like some assurance that it will work for our phones as well before I shell out cash, and I have yet to find one with desk mode functionality...

use nfc, i use nfc tasker and got my tags from tagsfordroid works great and cheap too
I've got NFC tags and I'm using the Google Car Home app via NFC Task Launcher. I originally set it up to open the app but there was no convenient way to automatically close it. What I found, and others may already be aware of this, is that the Car Home app can be set to monitor BT and when a specific connection is made it will automatically start the Car Home app. Also, when the connection is lost for a user configurable period of time it will automatically close the app. So now all I use the tag for is to turn on BT and set volumes & brightness.
So even though the store says the app isn't compatible it is and just needs to be manually installed.
Hey folks! I come to this forum seeking advice for a client.
In lieu of a recent tragedy, one of my clients has been paralyzed from the neck down... their family has purchased them a Nexus 7 for entertainment and has come to me for help setting it up. So far I've had minor success with apps like Dragon Mobile Assistant and Open Mic+ for Google Now but there are obviously a few barriers that are encountered in a situation like this. The goal would be to be able to do the following with the Nexus 7:
- Read books
- Listen to music
- Watch Netflix
- Play any voice-controlled games
So far I am unable to open a specific book, but Google Play Books opens just fine to the main menu. I am able to launch Spotify using Dragon, but there's actually no efficient way to pause the music with voice commands. You can call up the Dragon interface which pauses the music, but then the screen doesn't turn off. The story with Netflix is the same as the books, the main menu is accessible with voice commands but after that physical input is required. I also have been pretty unsuccessful in finding games that can be played with just the voice, does anyone know of something that doesn't involve yelling at your device?
So I know this post is a little nit-picky, but considering the situation there really isn't any other option. Personally, I am a network administrator and know almost nothing about the ins and outs of Android devices other than what I use on my S4. I'm hoping the wizards here can help me out
Thanks for your time,
- Nick

Hi I know this sounds like a broad idea so ill get straight to the point.
I have a front door lock. I will lickley be getting the August lock or a Kevo. I have wireless lights and a NEST thermostat in the house also, the idea is that I want to create one app to control all my home wireless devices. I might use a rasberry pie which would act as some sort of repeater to link all my IR, RF, Wireless, devices to the Internet so I can use the app from anywhere in the world.
Is this possible? How difficult?
I found a device that can act as the controller to all the individual things in the house and links them to the internet however it uses its own app. any way to override the app with my own design?
Thanks!
Yes it is possible
We used to have a college thesis like this one back in the day. One solution that I can think of right now is you need to have the following:
1. Google App Engine to host a web app that connect your phone and a computer in your home
2. A custom mobile app that will communicate with the web app.
3. A computer / rasberry pi that will query the web app to know which switch to turn on / off. You'll need a USB relay to connect the computer with an appliance or a light bulb.
These are the three things I would start if I was to build one again. Good luck
Hey thanks for the reply.
That is reassuring. I will be communicating wirelessly to the lights however ( or the dimmable wall switch I should say).but that's the least of my concerns.
The main part is what you discussed. Any ideas how much I would need to pay someone to make the app? At there templates? I have some friend who are fantastic programmers however they have not touched apps b4.

No idea how much for the custom app but it cost me about 100 dollars (hardware and software) when I was in college to build the whole thing. Back then I only used SMS to communicate and not the internet. It would be fun building it your self.
If you want a ready made one, there are available ones in the market, and it would cost you about $50. Try searching for Belkin WeMo switch
Does anyone know if there is a way (or something similar like OpenAuto) that doesn't require an Android phone to be attached to it? To run a mapping solution something more as a standalone and has an API that I can send start and stop locations? I can do it easily on Google Maps, but it's not turn-by-turn navigation? I just don't have an Android phone, but an iPhone, and looking to put it on a windows unit along with a raspberry pi.
I own several Fire Stick 4Ks and have always found it very easy to program the remote to control my TV. However, a while back, I bought a JVC LT58EC3508 TV and have not been able to program the remote to turn the TV on/off. Choosing the JVC brand in the Fire Stick's list of TV brands does not work nor does manually entering any of the JVC codes found online.
From what I can gather this is because JVC TVs are now made by a different manufacturer, who is using a different IR code set. There are a finite number of IR code sets so I think I just need to find another brand that is using the same (or similar) IR code set and it will work. Unfortunately, the Fire Stick has A LOT of brands to choose from so it would take a ton of trial and error (or a bit of luck) to figure that out.
I did have some success by running the "Auto Test" feature of the "IR Code Finder NEC protocol" Android app on an old Galaxy S4. This feature runs through all of the codes in the app's database one-by-one. According to the app, the magical code for turning my TV on/off corresponds to device/address "01FE" and command "48B7".
If Amazon made their IR code database public, I might be able to correlate this with a brand but no such luck. I was considering developing an app to help out with this by either partially automating the trial-and-error process or programming the power button directly but it doesn't even seem like there is a public API for interacting with the remote. If I'm wrong on either of these counts, please do let me know.
I've given up on this several times but once in a while I get so annoyed with using two remotes that I pick it back up again, so here I am. Posting here in case anyone has any advice on how I could get this working. Thanks in advance.
I am having the exact same problem. Idd you ever find an answer?
Unfortunately, I never did find a solution.
This drove me crazy to point that I gave the JVC to my mom so I'd have an excuse to buy another TV
Fortunately, her Telus Android box was able to reliably turn the TV on and off via HDMI-CEC.
