There is a new line of Kenwood car stereos ("DNN" series) including the DNN990HD and DNN790HD.
They are running Android and another thread suggests it's running the following version:
Code:
Kernal version
3.0.8-tcc
[email protected] #2

How can I get started with trying to install the Play Store and/or root the device?
There are two female USB ports on the back but I don't think it has any other ports.
Should I purchase a USB male-to-male cable and try to connect both ports to my PC? ...and then run "adb devices" ?
Can anybody give me any other tips?
I did notice that there're is a 4 pin connector hidden under a clear plactic tab on the right side of the unit. It is either a J-tag or a proprietary USB connector. The older models with WindowsCE core had a 6 pin connector under the same plastic tab. I have a feeling that's a clue to adb access. On a side note, I tried almosst every possible button press/hold combo upon reset/boot to try to find recovery with no success. And while the android version is build 8 the Kenwood build is version is 1.0. I have a feeling that the only other way in will involve modifying an update file.

Thanks for the information!
Do you have a picture of the connector?
USB is 4 pins so maybe it's just a different connector on one side of the cable? (to prevent people from "easily" plugging in a USB A-to-B cable)
...or maybe it's a serial port requiring a USB-to-RS232 cable? (like what is used to update the Metra Axxess ASWX-1 steering wheel adapter)
Here is a photo of the connector as well as a couple of other photos. If it is a rs232 like the flashlogic or xk loader, then it's essentially J-tag. Been a while since I did any J-tag modding though. I also tried plugging in the flashlogic/idatalink loader to the back plug and got nowhere as well. So far, I've found that you can plug in a usb keyboard and mouse for full easy control. I tried to use the browser for a file tree listing but it returns nothing. I was unable to figure out the mount path for the usb flash when connected, or I otherwise would have tried to run/install an apk directly. I also accessed gmail via the web window, changed the UA string for desktop, and tried to download an apk I sent myself with no luck, download showed up, but never started.
So I just downloaded the Google play store.apk file online (did a google search and downloaded the APK) and then uploaded the apk to my dropbox account. I then opened the browser in the DNN990HD and went to the dropbox.com website, logged in, and downloaded the apk file. It downloaded fine and I then launched it. I then got an error message saying "Install Blocked For security, your tablet is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market."
Normally this is no big deal because you just go to applications and allow unknown sources to be installed on your device but Kenwood has hidden or gotten rid of that menu item so I can't access it. It looks like the next step is to figure out some sort of update.zip file but I haven't figured out if there's a way to get into the android bootloader on this thing.
Any other ideas out there yet?
I don't have anything to contribute, but I really, really hope some of the XDA guys can figure this out...
yeah this is a sweet radio, Installed it last weekend and love it,I used the Idatalink Maestro RR and i have all of my vehicle info on the radio screen it a sweet set-up, would be nice to install a regular gmail app and the play store, i`m wonder how much processor it has to run all of this stuff already. I wish I could figure out how to keep the Sirius replay off permanently.
Need to find a developer and probably enough donations raised to accomplish this.
I just put one of these in my car, it's pretty nice. I already noticed a force close on the launcher, lol. It only happened once I have since updated the BT firmware & software. What pisses me off it was suppose to have spotify support out of the box and I can't find any information on it really. I'm hoping this gets added with an update.I also wish they would have included OTA update support, you have to download it manually from kenwood & use a flashdrive.
DNN990HD Bluetooth Pairing
Has anyone had problems pairing their device with the DNN990HD? After installing the Kenwood firmware update I can't get the Pandora app on the head unit to connect to my Galaxy S4. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
So Could we maybe use this "USB UPDATE" method to gain install or root access?
I just installed one of these as well. Love it. I'd be willing to try almost anything to help get it rooted and have the Play store on it.
Scott
Okay guys I just tried editing the update for the radio by injecting the play story and a couple other apps I like into the update itself. The file structure is incredibly similar to a phone update. Unfortunately it did not go well. As it was updating it started to work but then the dead android icon appeared like a E: signature verification failed but it did not say that. I am only an amateur but it seems like we need a custom recovery or a way to adb either wired or maybe by wifi? I'm here to learn too so please any input would help.
Looking for hack into DNN 990 also... plus bluetooth issues...
LOL glad to see my favorite forums are on the DNN990 mission! Any progress on full access/root?
As well, I am having issues using bluetooth media with the device. The phone option works great (although it took several attempts to pair - those having trouble with this might like to know the unit won't pair if you have media source set to Pandora). The problem I'm having is with Ankidroid - I can't get the unit to broadcast my flashcards using text-to-speech, even though my present setup works on other hands-free devices. I tried playing audio file over bluetooth as well and it wouldn't work either. Any solutions?
Thanks!

Check and see what firmware version you are running. They released an update on the 31st of last month that corrected such issues. Ver 1.2.0 is the most recent release. If you need to download it check out the kenwood website and look under the support tab -> car entertainment for Firmware updates.

I think we're looking for Google Play store - so we can install apps - but we're locked out. I asked Kenwood tech support if there are plans for more apps and/or the Play store and the guy said not at this time. So any help to break in would be greatly appreciated!

Did the firmware and the bluetooth update and so far no joy. However I'm now having a problem getting text-to-speech working on Ankidroid minus the bluetooth so must fix this problem first.
I wonder what processor runs this unit. If we can find it out by software or opening the unit, it might give us some clues on how we could root it and unleash it's full potential.

Check BT settings on the deck, pandora has to be enabled. Took me a few minutes to figure it out the first time I set it up. It works great though, the BT control is fantastic don't even have to open the app. It just works. I will say after having the deck now for a few weeks, it's extremely nice however my HTC one is a much more powerful machine. You could put a top of line 4G ipad in would be a much more power machine. The resolution on the deck sucks and I don't wanna call it laggy but it's certainly not as fast as my HTC One. Granted a tablet is not made to control audio in a car. I'm sure a lot of the price take is the R&D that went into it, also certain car only functions a phone can't do. Like SiriusXM that you can pause from a satellite feed. Backup camera support which is nice which even works when the deck isn't booted yet. HD radio is absolutely fantastic. I never listed to the radio in the past but all my pre-sets now are HD only. Those thinking about the deck, yes it's cool but it's not the worth the money they are asking for it in my opinion. The built in Garmin Nav is pretty good, like I said a lot of the price tag your paying for the R&D that went into the thing since it's made specifically to work in a car but at the end of the day it's just android.

Look around in the settings, I wanna say I saw some where to shut it off by default. It's actually kinda a neat feature but can be annoying at times. One thing that pisses me off is when scrolling through channel list, it doesn't show what is currently playing. I had an old Sirius radio with boombox attachment that it use to do that years ago. Also changing your preset banks is a hassle if you don't have list view up which I also find annoying. I'm getting use to it though.
RE: Bluetooth
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I think I may have caused the problem when I rooted my Galaxy S 4 and flashed a new rom. I have working now. I have agree with you on the lagging of the head unit. The could have put a little faster processor in the unit, especially for what they cost.

For sure but it's still a great deck hopefully a few more firmware updates will get it even smoother. I have a paid Pandora subscription but there is no way to select bit rate but it sounds decent in the car. I use a rooted htc one with hacked apk and the unlimited skips works perfectly even through the deck which is great. Only bottleneck is sprints net zero 3g network. LTE isn't done yet in my area but it's getting there. Pandora is pretty fast over bt to the deck on LTE.

I'm very intrigued by the Nexus 5's NFC feature. I have ordered 10 tags from eBay, and plan on playing around with them.
Here are some ideas that I will be exploring:
you could store a URL on then so when someone places there phone near the tag, it loads a webpage, or, better yet, a YouTube video
You could also put an NFC sticker on the back of your business card that contains a VCard so when scanned by a phone, will add a new contact with name, address, email, and phone number
You can also use it to launch app or various actions like NFC Task Launcher
Use a nfc tag to open a photo of your list of medications for a diabetic and then be stick onto a braclet for emergency services to use
Switching on my WiFI and changing my lock screen from "pattern" to "None" when I enter my home
Switching BT on and starting Google Music when I get into my car
Putting my mobile into Aeroplane Mode at night
I have one at work setting the phone to dock mode, wifi on etc
I have one located in my entrance hall so when I get home my mobile data turns off, wifi turns on and a SMS is sent to the wife letting her know I'm home
I have one in my sofa cushion which I use on my Galaxy S3 to run a Tasker script to wake my media center and start a remote control app
Got one on my wallet as my contact card, so if some one asks for my number, I just NFC it onto there phone, works through the wallet, so you can stick it on the inside or to a card in side, or even just slip it into a pouch.
Got one on my work ID badge. So when going into work in morning, after breaks and lunch etc, swipe the phone over my badge, and it shuts everything down, leaving the phone exactly how I specify.
Put one inside the battery cover of my tv remote and if I touch my phone to it it brings up a tv guide on my phone.
On my bedside cabinet, the sticker opens IMDB as me and my girlfriend are always like "OMG who is that?!" when watching films
I have one by my bed to turn phone to silent and load up Music Streaming and then tap it again in the morning and it turn it back to "day mode"
log visitors into your home wifi network without them needing the password.
I can now connect my phone to my car cradle, and the tag on it automatically increases screen brightness to max, increases media volume to max, turns on bluetooth, and loads my sat nav app Waze
The Car
I've attached this tag to the dashboard in our car and it does the following to my phone:
Turns off wifi and enables mobile data
Turns up all of the volume settings to max
Opens my Google Music app, so I can choose a playlist to listen to
Welcome Home!
This tag is located on the bookcase just inside my front door. When I swipe my phone over it, the following happens:
Mobile data is turned off and wifi is turned on
Volumes are turned down to 50%
My phone forces a sync to check for new emails / updates etc.
Bed Time
Attached to the headboard of our bed, this tag sets my phone up for the night, it:
Sets my phone to silent
Turns off vibrate
Sets my alarm volume to full
I could also have it set an alarm, but I have a wife who is far more successful at waking me up than an alarm!
Washing Machine!
This one is my favourite, for out and out unnecessary geekiness! Attached to our washing machine, it:
Set the alarm on my phone for when the washing cycle is due to finish (I worked the length out) and this means I'm less likely to forget to dry stuff once it's washed.
It also sends an sms to my wife, telling her "I've put a load in the washing machine x".
This scores me some husband points and also remind her that there's a load in the washing machine that needs drying if I'm out when she gets home. Domestic bliss!
The Keyring
Along with the 10 tags I purchased came an additional tag on a keyring. I've programmed this one to check into Foursquare. Whenever I swipe my phone over the keyring, it opens up the list of nearby Foursquare locations and I simply tap the correct one to check in.
Darkfire2024 - Right now I have one on my laundry basket to set alarm for 30 minutes to tell me the laundry is done. i also use the keychain as a vibrate/ringer toggle for when I leave and enter meetings.
Is there a list of what others have done? Is there anything more interesting that people have already done?
I can see the potential, and am looking for other's ideas to explore.
Oh, and is Trigger (nee NFC Task Launcher) what everyone is using?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kamor®-NFC-tags-Waterproof-Stickers/dp/B00DRDZ08E/ - £9.99 inc del
Any advice on which type to go for? Pros and Cons for each type?
Just some info incase you guy didn't already know. When buying NFC tags for the Nexus 5, make sure they say NTAG203 or you will have problems writing them.
I got a 5 pack about a year ago to use with my S2. Have yet to use them.
Sent from my Nexus 5
Just bought this 10+1 pack $12 with Prime: http://www.amazon.com/Kamor®-NFC-tags-Waterproof-Stickers/dp/B00DRDZ08E
Could use one to fetch news and turn on music in the morning
I bought 4 from Tagstand and have set up 2 for the car - one for my car dock which will turn on BT, GPS, and auto brightness and launch Maps, and the other I will put on the dash or something to turn off BT and GPS and set my brightness lower.
The laundry one is a great idea!
The novelty wears off pretty quickly. I purchased a few wrist tags to use with my nexus 7, with the idea to automatically unlock when in close proximity. Turns out it's easier to enter a pin.
The Android Beam feature which uses NFC (and bluetooth) is very handy. Find myself using that most days.
What's the difference between the NTAG203 (Type 2) and Topaz 512 NFC (Type 1) tags?
The site I looked at said both should work on all NFC devices.
The only difference I can see is the memory: 168b v 450b. Anything else?

Below I found an explanation of the different tag types. Basically what I took from it is that type 1 &2 are meant to have a more disposable nature because they're not able to store enough information to perform complex tasks and are inexpensive to make. Type 3 & 4 are meant for more difficult things (i.e. probably things like Google Wallet reader where significant amounts of info are being passed around), are set at manufacture and thus can't be programmed as well as are more expensive.
Took the following from http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/wireless/nfc/near-field-communications-tags-types.php
NFC tag type definitions:
There are four basic tag types that have been defined. These are given designations 1 to 4 and each has a different format and capacity. These NFC tag type formats are based on ISO 14443 Types A and B which is the international standard for contact-less smartcards) and Sony FeliCa which conforms to ISO 18092, the passive communication mode, standard).
The advantage of keeping the NFC tags as simple as possible is that they may be deemed to be disposable in many instances, often embedded in posters that may only have a short life, etc.
The different NFC tag type definitions are as follows:
Tag 1 Type: The Tag 1 Type is based on the ISO14443A standard. These NFC tags are read and re-write capable and users can configure the tag to become read-only. Memory availability is 96 bytes which is more than sufficient to store a website URL or other small amount of data. However the memory size is expandable up to 2 kbyte. The communication speed of this NFC tag is 106 kbit/s. As a result of its simplicity this tag type is cost effective and ideal for many NFC applications.
Tag 2 Type: The NFC Tag 2 Type is also based on ISO14443A. These NFC tags are read and re-write capable and users can configure the tag to become read-only. The basic memory size of this tag type is only 48 bytes although this can be expanded to 2 kbyte. Again the communication speed is 106 kbit/s.
Tag 3 Type: The NFC Tag 3 Type is based on the Sony FeliCa system. It currently has a 2 kbyte memory capacity and the data communications speed is 212 kbit/s. Accordingly this NFC tag type is more applicable for more complex applications, although there is a higher cost per tag.
Tag 4 Type: The NFC Tag 4 Type is defined to be compatible with ISO14443A and B standards. These NFC tags are pre-configured at manufacture and they can be either read / re-writable, or read-only. The memory capacity can be up to 32 kbytes and the communication speed is between 106 kbit/s and 424 kbit/s.
From the definitions of the different NFC tag types, it can be seen that type 1 and 2 tags are very different to type 3 and 4 tags, having different memory capacity and makeup. Accordingly it is expected that there is likely to be very little overlap in their applications.
Type 1 and type 2 tags are dual state and may be either read/write or read-only. Type 3 and Type 4 tags are read-only, data being entered at manufacture or using a special tag writer.
Wait...there's three standards of NFC chips? :silly:
Thankfully they can get some things standardised though.

I just bought a 10 pack of Topaz ones. I think they'll both work with the N5, its just the memory capacity thats different. If you use the app Trigger (formally known as NFC launcher) and make your tasks or actions, it tells you how many bytes they are, so you can buy your tag accordingly.
Also as a side note, dont buy the 1K tags as they arent compatible with the newer smartphones. They do have almost double the memory capacity but i rather not take a risk.
Will update everyone once i play around with my tags.

Nice, most people on the sites/ebay opt for the NTAG203 (Type 2) instead of the Topaz 512 so there's not much feedback on it yet.
In terms of memory, the higher it is the more complex the task/action the tag can hold? Haven't had the chance to use Trigger yet so I don't know how many bytes a usual task would require but I'll get onto that soon.
For those in the UK, an eBay seller has 10 sticker NFC tags for £6. Not tried them myself, but will be placing an order later today.

Yeh i was going to go for the NTAG203 but then i used trigger and created some dummy actions that i would use, they were well over the 144bytes mark. The Topaz 512's arent that much more expensive, only a couple of dollars. I dont mind paying for quality.
Hi I know this sounds like a broad idea so ill get straight to the point.
I have a front door lock. I will lickley be getting the August lock or a Kevo. I have wireless lights and a NEST thermostat in the house also, the idea is that I want to create one app to control all my home wireless devices. I might use a rasberry pie which would act as some sort of repeater to link all my IR, RF, Wireless, devices to the Internet so I can use the app from anywhere in the world.
Is this possible? How difficult?
I found a device that can act as the controller to all the individual things in the house and links them to the internet however it uses its own app. any way to override the app with my own design?
Thanks!
Yes it is possible
We used to have a college thesis like this one back in the day. One solution that I can think of right now is you need to have the following:
1. Google App Engine to host a web app that connect your phone and a computer in your home
2. A custom mobile app that will communicate with the web app.
3. A computer / rasberry pi that will query the web app to know which switch to turn on / off. You'll need a USB relay to connect the computer with an appliance or a light bulb.
These are the three things I would start if I was to build one again. Good luck
Hey thanks for the reply.
That is reassuring. I will be communicating wirelessly to the lights however ( or the dimmable wall switch I should say).but that's the least of my concerns.
The main part is what you discussed. Any ideas how much I would need to pay someone to make the app? At there templates? I have some friend who are fantastic programmers however they have not touched apps b4.

No idea how much for the custom app but it cost me about 100 dollars (hardware and software) when I was in college to build the whole thing. Back then I only used SMS to communicate and not the internet. It would be fun building it your self.
If you want a ready made one, there are available ones in the market, and it would cost you about $50. Try searching for Belkin WeMo switch
Hi. Have a JY mtcb head unit with Maylaysk rom and 4.4.4 android. Find it tricky to shift between the 2 phones i have conected in the bluetooth app on my head unit. First i have to mark the active phone and then deselect it. Then i can mark the next phone in the list and connest it. Is there a easy way to do this with just a short cut or a another app that will do it more easy?
I do not know a shortcut but maybe I can do even better
Buy an android compatible Bluetooth dongle and pair both (cost me $4 incl shipping from China), I did that with my OBD device and phone but see know issue why 2 phones shouldn`t work as well.
The only thing that could be a (small) problem is which it would dial a number with.
Just a suggestion of course
Tasker?

What functions would you be using in Tasker?
I was just thinking that Tasker could possibly be used to automate bluetooth switching. I'm not sure HOW to set it up though.
I use the app Trigger. I use it to turn on my phone's Hotspot when it connects to my headunits Bluetooth connection and when it disconnects it turns off the Hotspot and turn on my wifi. It is very easy to use compared to Tasker. Tasker is good as it has a lot of functions but I don't quite know how to use it yet.

I was using Tasker for a few of these things, but actually the Smart Connect on my phone does all these things well.
I think what this thread is about though, which I would like to know two is that if you have two phones connected to the head unit, it connects to one, but even though the other is stored as a bluetooth connection it will only autoconnect to the last connected phone. This means you have to manually hit the connect on the head unit for it to work if you weren't the last one in the car!
It would be better if you could tell the head unit to have a "preference" to connect to phone A over phone B, but if phone A isn't present, then connect to phone B.
Well the headunit is very limited, but if you are very knowledgeable in Tasker you set something like that up on the headunit. I think trigger can let it do the same thing by using restrictions,

So I've had this fantasy of installing a tablet in my car's dashboar to act as a car computer. That means I will be able to access my google music cloud, using it as a radio, navigation system, OBD scanner, etc... (I plan on getting a tablet with cellular connectivity).
But the thing that looks most complicated to me is to hook it up with a reverse backup camera and to make the camera feed pop up every time i put the car in reverse, and close when I put it out of the reverse gear.
Does anyone have an idea of how I could make this happen?
You'd have to, not only, find a way to interpret the reverse signaling via USB or through the OBDII connection, but also accept the video input from the backup cam. Considering most aftermarket backup cams use a standard RCA connection for video and reverse light for a trigger, I'd say you're better off either getting a headunit that supports a backup cam input or a rear view mirror with a ghost screen.

Yea I've seen some people on youtube managing with it. Some used RCA to USB OTG adapter.
Some examples:
This guy used this this which connects to the reverse lights' power.
This guy did it with a webcam so there would be no need of using RCA adapter. The only question is how do you make the video feed pop up automatically when going into reverse gear.
You'd have to find something that understood the reverse signaling or interface with the OBDII on the tablet, other than that I have no idea.
Actually, if you just wired the camera to use the 12v+ from the reverse lights, then the camera would only be on when the car was in reverse. Then it's simply a matter of having the system display an image when one is being transmitted, and turn off the app when video transmission stops. Seems this would be much easier than trying to tap in to OBDII and look for an R signal.

Yea I managed to get to that idea already. But, I will probably abandon this project since in my annoying, full of bureaucracy country it is illegal to mess with your car's electricity if you don't have an electornics engineering degree.
Wow. That is crazy. I had no idea that vehicle laws in Israel were so strict. Would you be allowed to install the system if it all plugged in to the cig lighter? Therefore it could be seen as a complex accessory, rather than a modification? I'm just curious.

Wifi connected reverse cam
You should check out how Garmin codes for this scenario. The BC30 connects to the reverse 12V and only transmits when in reverse. They use a wifi receiver that is integrated into the power cord. There is a setting in the OS to either auto switch to camera or only switch when told to. They use 2.4GHz

What do you mean I should check how they code? Will they provide me with a source code?
I am also exploring this idea

I have sourced a wifi based reversing cam , but the problem is that when it transmits my samsung galaxy note drops its internet connection and therefore google maps etc. I am a newbie, so there might be a way to hold two connections open simultaneously? Any ideas?
I think this is going to be so complicated and that the amount of time and effort put into it would far outweight the cost. you can buy very low cost backup camera addons that work in any car on ebay straight out of china. You could probably sell your tablet on a used goods site and buy one of these addons and still have money leftover form the sale of the tablet.
