[Q] Completely voice-controlled Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hey folks! I come to this forum seeking advice for a client.
In lieu of a recent tragedy, one of my clients has been paralyzed from the neck down... their family has purchased them a Nexus 7 for entertainment and has come to me for help setting it up. So far I've had minor success with apps like Dragon Mobile Assistant and Open Mic+ for Google Now but there are obviously a few barriers that are encountered in a situation like this. The goal would be to be able to do the following with the Nexus 7:
- Read books
- Listen to music
- Watch Netflix
- Play any voice-controlled games
So far I am unable to open a specific book, but Google Play Books opens just fine to the main menu. I am able to launch Spotify using Dragon, but there's actually no efficient way to pause the music with voice commands. You can call up the Dragon interface which pauses the music, but then the screen doesn't turn off. The story with Netflix is the same as the books, the main menu is accessible with voice commands but after that physical input is required. I also have been pretty unsuccessful in finding games that can be played with just the voice, does anyone know of something that doesn't involve yelling at your device?
So I know this post is a little nit-picky, but considering the situation there really isn't any other option. Personally, I am a network administrator and know almost nothing about the ins and outs of Android devices other than what I use on my S4. I'm hoping the wizards here can help me out
Thanks for your time,
- Nick

[Q] Backgrounding Youtube

Does a solution exist to run Youtube in the background on the EVO or any Android device? There are times where I listen to playlists on youtube and as soon as I switch to the homescreen, the video/audio stops due to it running in the foreground. I saw that the new blackberry tablet is capable of this but not sure if that is an android device or not.
Sorry bud, its against the rules of android . You'll have to settle for pandora or tune in radio.
or jango, with unlimited skips and no ads

[Q] Car Mode use Waze for navigation

Anyone know of a way to use WAZE for the navigation app in car mode? Looks like the only choice is Google Maps or an app on Samsung's app store.
...What they asked... re Car mode
Just putting a shout out to say I have the same question. I just switched from Droid Razr Maxx to a Note 4 (I'm giddy happy too). and the car mode there gave me a submenu into which I could put Waze, my favorite music streaming apps, etc. We should probably be asking Samsung, anyone know an email address or forum to which we can direct this question?

What is Samsung Dex and why do you / should I use it?

I looked for an hour this morning looking for Tab S4 communities I could bother with my noobie questions - I've already posted twice here - but haven't found much. Even the Samsung communities aren't specific to the tab S4. I'm not a "developer" in the strict sense of the word - I have an account here related to a couple of android apps I'm on beta for. So I hope you'll bear with me. If there are any other good Tab S4 forums out there, please point me to them!
I'm a home user. I've mostly replaced my laptop with my tablet. About the only things I do anymore on the laptop are taxes, purchasing airplane tickets, and managing my library with Calibre. I'm a light tablet user of Microsoft Office, heavy on banking/bills, books, video, web browsing, and games. My previous tablet was a 64gb Tab S2. I traded up for the memory and speed. The Tab S4 gets me nominally to 656 gb (256 gb + 400 gb card). I probably have a terabyte or so of data, so not quite able to cut the cord, but 90% of the way there.
So I've read a lot about DeX, but still don't really understand what it is and why people use it. I don't have a keyboard yet (but can see that most of the cases for the Tab S4 on Amazon seem to include them). Can someone post a primer on DeX, what it is, how people use it, and how you use it yourself? Maybe eventually this could go into a guide-post? Why do people talk about it as a game changer?
I'm going to be posting a similar question on the S-Pen.
Thanks,
Joe
I think your best bet is to take a look at a few videos on DeX on YouTube. Here is one below but there's quite a few out there.
Basically it's to give users who are familiar with Windows a similar experience on Android;at least one of their goals. If you are pretty proficient with Android, you probably won't use it. I played with it but don't think I will use it much.
So I've played with DEX.
My thoughts are mixed. I crashed it twice in the first 5 minutes I had it up.
Thoughts on Dex after two weeks with the tablet:
I'm using an Insignia USB-C to HDMI+Type-C Power+USB-A adaptor, with a wired keyboard connected to the USB input and a bluetooth mouse. The adaptor works, but I ocassionally get pop-ups that it is charging slowly with the original lightning power supply & charge cable.
I started using Dex on the fly. Opened Watch ESPN, You Tube, Chrome, and VLC, and boom, system crash. I closed everything and started over, this time I only opened ESPN, and while it was connecting to Live video, another crash. So I stopped playing with streaming video apps.
Running local video (located on my external SD card) with VLC and MX Player was "fine"... As in "Fine is a good word. Put it together with 'wine' or 'dining' and you've really got something." Running at high video quality there were pauses and stutters during playback. Resolution seemed higher than with Chromecast (using VLC -- MX Player still doesn't support native casting).
I also got low-memory warnings a few times while I was playing around with multiple apps / windows. I think I read somewhere that the new Galaxy phones have twice the Ram in the Tab S4. That seems like a missed opportunity for enhanced productivity in a tablet that is supposed to compete with high end ipas and low end laptops.
My only excitement was with Excel. Excel is the main reason I can't fully cut the laptop cord (pun intended). It just is too hard cutting and pasting and moving cells around in Excel to do even light spreadsheets in Android Excel. In DeX, Excel was much more like the Windows desktop experience.
There are only a few other apps "optimized" for DeX (I'mnot really sure what it means to be "optimized" - but such it is), and they didn't seem to have significant improvements over the standard Android experience.
One thing that would take Dex to the next level is if it got the ability to run an extended desktop, like a second monitor on Windows. I've been able to figure out how to bring the TV up as a second computer (leaving the tablet to run stock Android), or in mirror mode (which I'm running now because I started this post on my tablet, and then brought Dex on, and was told I needed to close and lose all open windows on my tablet browser when I opened the browser in Dex). Mirror mode has an interesting feature -- the on-screen keyboard is docked at the bottom of the browser window, and there doesn't seem to be a way to hide it even though I'm using an external USB keyboard and BT mouse.
I think what I'm trying to say is that Dex has some intriguing features, but nothing that is a showstopper. The one feature that jumps out (getting the desktop experience with Excel) isn't enough to make me want to move from stock Android to Dex as a regular choice.
Thanks,
Joe

oversimplified media centre using firestick advice.

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section. I'm looking to set up a firestick I've just purchased to allow my mum to watch tv and movies on it she is very much behind the times with technology and even the thought of using a mobile phone worries her.
So far with stick I've tried to make it as easy as possible for her to use and the easiest way I imagined would be the default amazon account with the stick and paying for the prime service but this is a little too confusing for her as so far she has clicked tv shows and movies that have taken her interest and unknowingly selected signing up for starszplay, Netflix and other things that aren't included in the prime account but still continue to flash up as a choice... I've even select in app purcheses off and it has still allowed her to sign up to different packs including itv hub ( when did this become costly ? its free on windows) anyways I've managed to turn them all off again but she is afraid to select anything incase it involves a subscription and isn't free with the prime account.
I then opted to try and remove the Amazon set up completely by using a different launcher and installing free movie/tv apps like teatv or stremio however this isn't great either... the launcher doesn't startup as the default launcher.
I Also have a VPN that would be perfect if I continued down the streaming free apps however even when I set it to have the killswitch and to load at boot... I've noticed im still manually having to go in and start it up and at times it has failed to load an I.P due to the killswitch.
And even using these free apps she is unsure of what streat to select etc... sometimes there will be links showing up for a show that wasn't selected etc...
So basically im looking to bypass the amazon launcher and just have either a plain launcher with only the apps I've installed for her to use and seek movies and shows.. something very basic that will show just movies and tv shows to select and continue watching section... and will auto find the best link and play the correct file similar to ones that pick the 1080p file first and then just loads.
And also have the vpn up and running from boot with no worry of it disconnecting or not running while streaming something.
Just whatever you guys can suggest, she is very much a novice and even with me showing her I don't think she will get until she plays around with it for a while... but she wont do this is if she is worrying about clicking wrong things or purchasing things etc.
How would you setup a Firestick for someone that is new to it just so they could watch movies and shows and be able to resume things they are enjoying with ease.
Thanks for any help.
Kodi with a simple skin. You can customize the skins in their own options even further to remove menu items.

REALLY , really dumb question - I hope!

O.K,
I am trying to switch from a windows car pc to an android version.
To be honest, car pc's are a real dinosaur, so I was hoping for a lot more innovation in the android field.
So '........... I am trying several android car launchers to try to get a feel for things.
I have an allergy ( ) to Google services, so do not want any google voice search, or android auto.
Happy with offline maps as well.
I am now finding a problem with what I think should be one of the most basic things - that is , making and receiving calls.
First off, I have a 10 inch android tablet on which I am trialling these apps.
I am connecting my nokia smartphone ( android 11 ) to the tablet via bluetooth.
NOW....... I foolishly thought that android could take care of the rest without much tweaking.
By that i mean, if my phone is connected and sharing contacts, why can't I click on the ''phone ' icons on the apps, and get either 1) a dialler, or 2) a list of contacts??
Am I wrong? - is that not one of the most basic things - to connect your phone to a tablet and use the tablet app to make calls using your connected phone?
I have had no luck doing this , and have found little info on the web.
I am sure I am going mad, but could anyone give me an idiots guide to how to achieve this?
Many Thanks
pootler
