PIXEL 2XL charges after a few minutes of plugging in. - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I have been facing this issue since December 4 before the December Security Patch arrived. The device would not start charging instantly but after about 3-4 minutes it would start charging. Same goes for the headphone adapter but it takes about 5-8 seconds. I have performed a hard reset. The issue is still present. The charger and the adapter both works perfectly fine with my other phones. I talked with the support team and they said "MAYBE IT IS AN SOFTWARE ISSUE AND WILL BE RESOLVED AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF JANUARY PATCH".
I am open to all tips and suggestions.
Thanks.

I had some (same) USB issue since the October patch. Charging start quickly but after x min the USB connection lost. No charging. Nothing. If I remove the USB and reconnect still nothing. I have to reboot. I'm going to sell this "phone"

Mine still charges but takes a little time for the phone to acknowledge that the charger is connected.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Have you tried to replicate this issue in Safe Mode? Call them back and insist you have tested in safe mode and the issue still persists after a FDR and you want to RMA. There is a 2 year warranty on the P2. Keep calling until you get an RMA.

G7 will only charge when powered off

I seem to be having the same issue as found on this thread, can't find anything here though.

Anyone else have the same issue and found a fix? Guessing this might have to go back to lg.
Thanks!

I started getting this issue yesterday a day after I got a software monthly update for Nov. I normally shut the phone off to charge but sometimes leave it on. When plugged into something it doesnt seem to detect its plugged in. I even swapped cables to a slower charger and same thing. It doesnt see it.
When I fully charged it off, It beeps the battery and does a circle hue randomly by the home button but than detected the connection to pc. I ignored it and started up again but without the beeping, just wont charge when on. There is no dirt or anything in the unit,. I have not moved any-wires, they have been sitting in the same spot on the counter since day 1. I'm gonna try a factor reset if it keeps happening a day or 2 from now.
Same problem here, it was behaving strangely few days ago (charging problem right away but worked in the end so let it go) and now it charges only when off or if plugged within 30 seconds after turning on and only on normal charge speed (not quick charge). Tried to wipe apps and everything, did the facrory reset 2 times but still nothing.
I have similar issues with charging my g7, first give me notification of moisture detected on USB port, then can't charge normally need to plug a few times and sometimes get slow charging, i was thinking have faulty USB port, and have poor battery life.
Then I turn off and put the cable and charges normally and realized that it's software issue.
I flash the ULM10i firmware and now everything work flawless the USB port charges when it's turn on and have very good battery life now.
As an update, I called LG and they basically stated that it sounds like a software issue and to send the phone in. I declined hoping to get another update that would fix it.
I have yet to get one from T-mobile. Long story short, it corrected itself and now charges off or on and no longer does the beeping. Whatever it was, was a bug that temporary for me.
same problem here; no moisture errors, aleatory starts charging when it's on, poor battery life; mainly starts charging with the phone off
problem solved! I've forced LG BRIDGE to reflash the ROM and voilà, all working like a charm. Just download from lge.com, install LG BRIDGE, under "software update" ... "update error recovery" and it will download and reflash the working ROM.

Pixel XL3 wont charge at all. Turns on/shuts off

Hello im new to the forum, a friend of mine suggested this is the best place to post this so here it goes:
I bought a used Pixel XL3 from ebay, it arrived today and i immediately turned the phone on, it had about 25% battery in it, i used it for most of the day, when i got home i tried charging it with the original charger and when i connected the phone it didnt show it was charging at all. I tried 2 other charges/cables and the same result. I know the phone did detect the cable was being connected because every time i connected the usb cable the phone kind of blinked, but it didnt charge.
I researched on Reddit and someone witha similar problem suggested i completely drain the battery and then try and charge it again. I drained the battery and now when i connect the phone it shows a gray battery icon with a lightning bolt in it for a few seconds, then it boots to the google logo and then it shuts down again. It does this over and over again.
Im at a complete loss of what to try or do next. The phone did work when i took it out of the box! I cannot RMA it to Google since im not the original buyer of the phone and im also out of the US.
Any assistance would be really appreciated!
Try a wireless charger?
If you plug it in when off does it charge? Leave it charging for as long as you can then boot up.
I've had this problem and although it seems like a software issue there's no solution in sight and many people experiencing it.
Once you have the phone on check for a notification that says "Charging connected device via USB" - choose that - select "This device" (instead of "Connected device") Not a fix, but I"ve been getting by doing this and it allows me to charge. I am close to getting a replacement.

Welcome. Both ideas of turning the phone off and charging from there, and wireless charging are good ones. Once you get a decent charge on the battery, go into Recovery and do a factory reset. If the problem presents itself after a reset you may have a hardware issue like the USB port itself or the battery. If the phone is bootloader unlocked (or unlockable) you may have a few more options. What are the first 2 digits of your IMEI?
I'm having the exact same problem with my Google pixel 3 XL. I don't know if it's the charging port or it's because I'm running Android Q beta 4 and it's been happening for 2 days now. I'm going to try a factory reset tomorrow night if nothing else works then I'll update it here.

Ok, so have you tried wireless charging to rule out the USB interface? Hopefully a fresh install with latest P will get you back up and running.

Android 10 Charging issue

Hey, so i just received the android 10 update. I was already running the android 10 beta for some time now. After the update, my wall charger (Tronsmart, type C with PD) stopped working. I was able to rapid charge my pixel with the same charger earlier, but now it simply stopped charging. I used 3 different type C to type C cables with that power brick, but pixel doesnt get charged whatsoever. I tried using some cables that i had lying around, which are not really the top of the line kind of things but still usually get the job done. These are usb C to A cables that I have used previously with my pixel. However, after the update, the phone shuts down within a couple of minutes, if i connect any of those cables. I searched around and some people have had the same issue after android 9 beta update. Using an old toothbrush, i gently cleaned the charging port, but nothing changed. Right now, i am finally able to charge phone with my PC using an old type C to A cable that shipped with my old HTC 10. However, my computer says usb device not recognized and as you`d expect, its charging pretty slowly. I even tried resetting the phone but the problem
Any ideas as to what might have caused this? Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.
TIA

My wife noticed the same thing on her 3a since the update
I also experienced the same problem since i upgraded to android 10. Been roaming google for possible solution, found nothing so far except rolling back to android 9 or wait for an update to fix this bug.
I charges my phone with a usb a to c cable using a power delivery compatible brick (18w, 3A), it is able to fast charge my pixel.

I had to RMA my first phone due to this issue. If you google search pixel 2 xl charging issues you'll find many people who have run into this issue. All of them pretty much end with "RMA phone".
It started out my third-party charger would reboot my phone the moment it was plugged in. My original charger stopped charging the phone soon after.
My computer would only sometimes (1 out of 15 - 20 tries) read my phone so I could unroot it. All of the other times it would pop up as unrecognized.
This is typically due to a hardware issue (loose/damaged port circuitry because of bad quality components or soldering). It gets worst and worst 'til nothing works and phone reboots when you connect the cable... and RMA is the only solution.
IMHO, mainstream usb-c operating amperage is too hard on the ports, specially due to heating. I would prefer to have a not so fast charging technology that would not damage the phones. And yes, this happens on many usb-c phones, not only Pixels.
But hey, maybe you have a different problem related to software
My phone is powering down sometimes, when i plug the charging cable. This happend after android Q update.

Rotating the USB-C cable helps. One orientation (no charging / or slow charging at best) the other orientation rapid charging.
Sadly it appears a number of our phones appear to be having charge port issues as they age...
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA Labs
Not sure if it's because I recently flashed the latest 10 factory image (2 days ago) but my device charges on all the cables, chargers and on the PC as it did prior to flashing the 10 factory image, I even get the charging rapidly notification...
Did this happen immediately to those who are experiencing it? Or did it happen after some time on 10?
Well, glad I came across this thread. I've been having troubles with charging in the last few days also.
TL;DR: Starting this past Sunday, my chargers would report "charging slowly" and not really charge the phone, whether in normal mode, safe mode, or off. Updated to 10 on release day. They all magically started working last night.
Story version: Woke up Sunday and pulled my Pixel 2 XL off the charger to find it at the same percentage battery was when I plugged it in. When I plugged it back in, it reported charging slowly. It's plugged into an Anker USB C to A, and the Anker IQ two port charger. My Wife's PIxel 2 was plugged into the other port, with another of the same cable. It was charging fine. I unplugged hers and plugged mine in, reported charging slowly. I grabbed my Anker battery pack, and used the included USB C to A cable that I've used before, got "charging slowly." I rebooted the phone and got the same results. I powered it down and left it charging, same results. I tried safe mode, same thing. All these chargers/cables/battery packs work perfectly fine on my Wife's Pixel 2.
I was in the car and tried my cable/adapter in there. That one worked. I have a CableMatters 2.0 amp lighter adapter and an Anker braided USB C to A cable. I brought the cable and phone in the house, and tried the cable with my existing Anker 2 port wall charger and it worked. Weird why it would work for my Wife's but not mine, but oh well, at least I could charge the phone. Later on, I took the car cable and connected to the battery pack, charging slowly. I brought it back to the Anker wall charger, charging slowly. Tried my laptop and PC USB 3.0 ports, charging slowly. I brought the car cable and the house cable back to the car, and both cables worked just fine in the car. So, at this point, it doesn't appear to be a cable issue, but something intermittent with my chargers.
I dug up a Monoprice USB A charger I had, that has a 2.0 amp port. Tried that last night, and every cable I have charged normally with it. Just to further test, I then took the cables back to the Anker wall charger, and it worked also. To make it more frustrating, the Anker battery pack also started playing nicely and charging. I feel like it's a software issue with the phone, but I have no viable proof of it. I upgraded to 10 on launch day and have had no issues since. The only other thing I did was install Accubattery after I had an idea to try and monitor charging rates.
I did the October 2019 update and noticed this morning zero charging over night. I use an Anker multi-port brick with 2-ports fast charging. Thanks for the Accubattery idea. It shows 1 Amp charging off the 2.4 amp port. I may have to roll back the October update if I can.
I have noticed over the last few months that the screen uses a huge amount of battery. I can see the percentage drop as I scroll through the news.
Guysss I found the solution ! I had the same problem but this easy fix helped me ! Hope it's gonna work for you.
First you have to drain your battery to 1 or 2 %
Second step, hard reboot your phone (long press lock for 10 s)
As it's without battery it won't reboot but it will show the low battery sign.
Plug in your fast charger and it will show the sign that it's charging, wait a few seconds, boot your phone without unplugging the cable. And that's it. It should work.
I can't believe in so happy it got fixed for me I was suffering for two weeks after the update and no response from Google. The firs time in long time I see 70%>>>
---------- Post added at 11:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 PM ----------
Update : if you don't want to wait for your battery to drain, you can do this instead.
Long press volume down and power for 10 sec.
It will take a screen shot (normal) but wait for the 10 sec.
You will have a menu, choose using the volume up and down to navigate "power off" ( by default it will be power on).
Plug your fast charger and it should start charging

ive tried doing the second option and i never get a menu, it just straight up reboots.
my problem seems to be similar to those stated here before. i cant use my original charger that came with my pixel.
i can use the usb c port on this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0778JNN4B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) with any of the cables i have. none of the cables will allow me to use the original charge brick anymore. i can use the only usb c -> a cable that i have. (its the standard one that comes with the nintendo switch pro controller) i even tested with the nintendo switch dock cable and it seems to work fine. i am outside of warranty so i cant have google fix it any longer(literally started issues 20 days after my warranty ended...). im gonna try draining it down till it dies and try my original charger again to see if it will do it but i was wondering if anyone else has come up with any other solutions to this problem. im thinking about reflashing it to see if that will do it and if that doesnt maybe go to a custom rom to test that even just wondering if anyone else has tried these options so i can have an idea if its gonna possibly work for me or not
hi man.
So weird you couldn't get that menu, try holding for 20 seconds instead of 10 seconds. It should work keep doing it until the phone goes off completely.
Trust me I did it again and it worked. Every time fast charging stops working I do this trick and it works.

idk, i have tried holding it even past the point of it turning off and still no menu, but i finally got it to die completely and it still didnt seem to be working on the chargers i was having issues with, after going for a ride in my car and using AA oddly enough it seems to be working fine, no idea.
Try holding the UP volume button and power.
Mine just started doing this, I left it plugged into the plane the whole trip flying overseas. (Probably shouldn't have done that)

Wireless charging issue

Hi all.
I have had a problem with the wireless charging on the galaxy s20. About 10 days ago it totally stopped working. I am using a powerbank with wireless charging feature. I can't put finger on it why that happened considering the fact that I have not made any changes to the phone (major system changes). The only thing I've done was to install the security patches and so on (last one being the September one). So, my question, is there an option or something to somehow stop the wireless charging feature or something, does the power mode option have something to do with this?
I've stopped Bixby routines just in case that it had something to do with this, no change.
Adaptive power mode- no change.
Fast wireless charging/wireless charging options changed- still no wireless charging.
I have no way to test this phone with another wireless charging pad but I'm pretty sure the one on my battery should be working (1 month old, used about 5 times, should be high quality).
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.:good:
Only way to rule out device failure, is to try your phone on another wireless charging pad. Likelyhood is the wireless charging circuit on your powerbank has failed in some way. Find another wireless pad to test with
I had a cheap wireless stand fail after about 20 charge cycles, replaced it with a Belkin one and it was fine after.
Known issue after the Sept sec patch. Something changed , no one has yet to figure out what or why .
All we can do is wait for next month's patch, or someone to figure out a workaround until then
UPDATE:
Just installed the October security patch. Nothing changed with my problem. In the next days I am going to test my pad with another phone with wireless charging and see where the problem is.
Thanks for the suggestions, just seen how many people have the same problem as me so that gives me hope ?

wireless charging strange behaviour

Hello,
since installing sep 1 security patch I have strange problem with wireless charging. It like recognizes the charging pad, starts charging and says "fast wireless charging" and says i.e. 45 minutes to full. Then a couple of seconds and it changes to "charging" and time changes to 3 hours. and then back to fast charging. And cycles this. And it doesn't charge much
Now I don't know if it's connected with sep 1 security patch but it started happening after that. I didn't drop it or anything. It charges through cable normally. The issue is not with charger, since I have 2 identical charging pads at home and at work, and the phone does the same with both...
Any ideas?
Thanx!
It is. I reported this to Samsung and it's all over Reddit as well that others on the latest update are having the exact same issue.
My other device still fast change on the same chargers and the only difference is that my S20+ was just updated. I don't plug my phone in, so I noticed it immediately as I just have wireless charging in the house for the most part. Thankfully USB C fast and super fast charging still work fine, but that's beside the point. I'm hoping this new update (when it's available) fixes this.

Wow, thanks mate, I was getting depressed because of this, good to hear it is a software thing. I'd hate to have to return it and get another phone took me ages to set it up and migrate everything from my old S8 plus
