Maybe stupid question, sorry, but has the phone rear camera protection from the manufacturer? I ask because i buy glass protection, but when i look to camera on my phone i see there is something and when i move my finger across the surface, the flash is lower (circa 0.2mm) than the ambient. Thanks.
edit: this is not my phone but you can see what i mean.

Yes it is scratch resistant
No, its not scratch resistant.
Its glass, so naturally nothing can scratch it under the glass' own hardness value, like metals.
But a ceramic can easily scratch it.
For example, there are many micro dust everywhere, that is harder than the glass, thus it can be scratched even in your pocket.

I suggest you to watch JerryRigEverything video about Redmi Note 5 Pro. he clearly mentioned back camera is scratch resistance
Oh man...
What are you calling "scratch resistant"?
It has the same resistance as your glass window, thats not scratch resistant.
Or i can say that the plastic cover on my phone is "scratch resistant". Against my finger.
He can scratch is with a level 6 pick, wich is very basic.
Now Apple on the other hand has a "ruby-glass" compund wich is harder than standard glass. Now that is scratch resistant.

Its supposed to be better then gorilla glass, more in line with dragontrail glass.
I just keep my Galaxy Nexus in a fully enclosed case, pull it out to use and put it back when done, no scratches.
Metal like keys won't scratch the screen, sand will scratch ANY glass. Something to remember.

Impossible. Keys can't scratch any type of glass. It was something else.
For a material to scratch glass it has to be harder then glass. Sand, diamond, etc will scratch glass.
The metal in your keys can not. Period.

If you cannot feel it with your fingernail, it's not a real scratch.
There is quite some stuff in the wild that can scratch hardened glass, e.g.:
quartz, hardened steel, tungsten, emerald, spinel, topaz, cubic zirconia, chrysoberyl, chromium, silicon nitride, corundum, silicon carbide (carborundum), tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, stishovite, rhenium diboride, tantalum carbide, titanium diboride, boron nitride, boron, diamond.
Thankfully most of this stuff usually doesn't come close to your screen, except for sand/dust, which is basically everywhere. :-|

I highly recommend getting a screen protector. I had one and removed it 5 days later since I couldn't stand the horrible texture of the thing . The next day I got a scratch on the bezel right above the screen (beside the front facing camera)
EDIT: You may want to look for a case like this (which probably adds some bulk as reported by some reviews): http://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-PREMIUM-LEATHER-QUBITS-PACKAGING/dp/B0062VEF98/ref=pd_cp_cps_1
I also recommend a screen protector, always nice to have I think.
Since I have gotten the One X I have noticed that the screen seems to be oleophobic, because if I leave the phone alone for an hour all my fingerprint smudges are magically gone . To me this is a killer feature .
Is it really oleophobic or am I just crazy, because I can't seem to find anything about it online ?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
It would appear so, same as the Galaxy Nexus
Just checked mine, noticed the screen is indeed totally free of fingerprints for some reason while I never clean it. Didn't even notice it until now, nice!
@Op,
There goes the screenprotector story LoL hahaha

i did sanding of the screen to check if i could wipe off scratches and oleophobic coating - oleophobic coating disappeared almost completely but the scratches are still there very deep in to the glass, hard particles could just glide on top of the glass if there was any oil for it, like the oil in car engine to protect engine from scratching itself, the oil that our skin is releasing to protect our skin from scratches
oleophobic coating is a big mistake, a big FAULT as faulty antenna in iphone 4 - technological fault that should be fixed by HTC at no charge, i want my gorilla glass back as i had in galaxy s after 1 year without any scratches not even tiny ones
Yeah I can feel that indeed, the screen is much different then my previous devices.

Sanding of the screen to get the scratches off?
Very deep scratches that didn't dissapear?
I'm sorry but I do not understand how people can have deep scratches if you keep your device in the pocket.
The only thing I can think of are keys and sand indeed.
If I take my device to the beach I'm very carefull, not only with HTC One X but with any device.
Actualy not only phones but name a device that is sand resistant?

yes sanding using toothpaste is a method to remove scratches
I keep my HOX in HTC leather pouch, there was no keys or direct sand, environment was the same when i had my galaxy s, scratches came visible because i wanted less smudges and i wiped them off couple of times (thousands of times for the galaxy s), so there is like 100% chance i did finger cleaning my galaxy s with tiny hard particles on my fingers and scratches never appeared after a year but it did scratched my HOX in first week thanks to the oleophobic, by the way i got my HTC leather pouch same day i got HOX
Gorilla Glass V1 was scratch resistant (not scratch proof) with our finger oil , Gorilla Glass V2 with oleophobic is not scratch resistant.

sorry, but what the hell are you on about? oleophobic screen isn't a fault. the coating isn't making the scratches more likely. neither is the oil in your skin? clearly you scratched it with a bit of grit/sand/dirt that you didn't notice was there when you wiped it, or there was something in the pouch that scratched it (ie a bit of grit/dirt/sand)
gorilla glass 2 is stronger than gorilla glass 1 - due to the ion exchange, the molecules are pushed closer together than normal glass, hence it being more scratch resistant. but anything harder than glass WILL scratch it.
and all sanding does, even with toothpaste, is replace a bigger scratch with lots and lots of even thinner scratches. why would you want to do that?

I think he meant polishing, not sanding. I'd have to agree, these new screens are more fragile than the ole gorilla glass.
Back onto topic, I noticed the smoothness of the screen straight away, just felt so silky and smooth - nice!
I also noticed how dark and smudge-free the screen looks when it's off compared to me other devices that use the older glass.
The screen surface is awesome against fingerprints.
Just putting the phone into my pocket for 2 minutes is enough to wipe the few fingerprints that managed to stay on the screen.
Hey guys.

I read that has a obleotobic (blablavla) coating and thats for the fingerprints.

Yes. I had it in the same pocket with my keys often. (And before replacement I got curious, and scratched it with a knife. xDD No damage, but I didn't scratch hard.)
I believe a screen protector will have more harm once your remove it from screen and it's not required if you take a little care.

exactly same for me. I care a lot but it was all for nothing because i find two long micro scratches on screen...screen protector is on the way
It's usually sand that would leave light scratches on the screen. My Nexus S had a lot of light scratches on it, but it could be a different type of glass.
Well I don't think sand can EASILY scratch your phone.
Lemme tell you why. The other day I went to the beach with my Galaxy Nexi(my mom had one too) and when I went in the water, I got sand in my pockets. So I went home and the next day I went to my pool with the same swim wear I went to the beach with.
I put my phone in my pocket(no screen protector at the time) and when I took my phone out, I remembered there was sand in my pocket. I carefully pulled it out.
And I was so happy. I only got sand between the plastic and the display (they all fell out by the end of the day) and I got no scratches. And lemme tell you, I had a lot of sand in my pocket.
So I wouldn't say sand can scratch the screen easily.

two micro scratches on mine and I baby my phone..
doesn'tbother me too much since with the screen on you can't see them but definitely one of the easier to scratch phones I've had yet
My watch which uses Gorilla Glass has more visible scratches than my Nexus. I think there's a couple veeery faint ones on the Nexus, but nothing visible unless you reeeeally look for it. My watch on the other hand you don't have to look as hard, although still not deep enough to be visible when the screen is on. Then again I've had my watch for a couple more months than the Nexus..
Hi. I looked for previous threads but wasn't able to find any...so sorry if this is a duplicate.
I saw on the web that various opinions were around on whether the Gnex needs a screen protector. I watched the key test as well on YouTube. Can anyone confirm if this screen is good enough to not require a protector?

Obviously not scratch proof. No gorilla glass. Yes to the arguably "reinforced" glass. As long as you don't put your phone in with keys, coins, etc...you should be fine. I don't use a screen protector or case on mine and so far I only have a few nicks from light drops.

Watch out for sand, I'm pretty sure that's what scratched mine
There is no scratch proof glass on phones. Even Gorilla Glass scratches against things like sand.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Well gorilla glass is not much more than Cornings branded version of the hardened glass found on any phone including the GN. It is as resistant as any phone, but as it's still glass, it's likely that it will scratch. Personally mine has a bunch of tiny scratches(had it since launch). I bet they are caused by sand, and they are no better or worse than my previous phone with gorilla glass.
Whether you need a screen-protector is a question of whether you will be more annoyed by the protector or the tiny scratches. But it is likely that you will get tiny scratches.
My experience:
Galaxy Skyrocket with Gorilla glass: 1 1/2 years without a single scratch.
Galaxy Nexus: scratched in the first month.
Get a screen protector. These screens are pretty soft. It will easily scratch just from being in your pocket.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I've had mine for about 15 months, and I try to be careful with the phone. But try as I may, things happen. My glass is still crystal clear and free of any visible scratches, but there are multiple spots on the bezel around the glass that are scratched and pitted. I don't use any screen protectors or a case.

no it wont. just being in your pocket will NOT scratch the screen. however, if you have some sand in there or something harder than glass, it will scratch it.
i have had my phone for 14 months now, NEVER had a screen protector on it. and i JUST got my first scratch and i believe it was from a grain of sand on my thumb. i spend a LOT of time at the beach in Feb and March (live in Florida ) and its my only guess as to how it happened.
if you are careful, you should be OK without one....but getting one is probably a good idea if you are around sand a lot.
Yes it scratches
- wore out your welcome
Got mine at launch, no screen protector and no major scratches. There are a couple MINOR ones but nothing that can bee seen without careful inspection. I don't abuse the phone but I also don't baby it. I have used a holster and had it in my pocket. Go naked you will be fine if you don't abuse it.

The misconception is what exactly a "scratch" is. A layer of glass is actually removed and cannot be "fixed". Anything will scratch if rubbed against an abrasive with a greater hardness.

Agreed. My comment was just to reinforce the fact that unlike popular belief, gorilla glass is not at all scratch resistant but rather shatterproof. Not so much as an entire "layer".
Well, I've had my nexus 5 for little over 2 months now, and the screen is just covered with surface scratches. It's really annoying as I have never dropped the phone, or left it in my pocket with my keys, nevertheless, despite my best efforts the screen is riddled in micro scratches only visible in the sun. Is there any way I can remove these easily? or could I use a screen protector to hide them? Also, isn't gorilla glass 3 supposed to be scratch resistant, because from what I've seen it's really not.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You can hide/reduce visibility of some or many of them with a screen protector but not all.

Sorry about that, but yeah, i think I may pick up one of those invisible shields, but these scratches are quite thin and light. so who knows i guess we'll wait and see.
For microscratches pretty much any screen protector will do.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'll echo the above sentiments. I had (well, have) a barely noticeable, yet nonetheless aggravating scratch, about a centimeter in length, toward the bottom of my display. A regular plastic (non-matte) screen protector solved that issue, as well as completely hiding a giant 'permanent' smudge caused by my oleophobic coating wearing off (but that's another story). So you'll hopefully be good to go.
Metals don't scratch glass. Sand particles do.
If the tiny scratches that can only be viewed at a certain angle under strong light when the screen is off irritate you that much, you may have to use a plastic screen protector and change it every 3 days, or a glass protector and change it every few months.
Gorilla Glass 3 is already the most scratch-resistant thing you can normally get for your phone. Any protectors will scratch worse than it.
There is no way to remove the scratches without damaging the oleophobic layer. A way to "remove" the scratch is to use toothpaste, but that actually scratches the sides of the scratch to "flatten" it. The oleophobic layer will be damaged and you will leave bad smudges on that area.
The best way is to buy a Nexus 5 front frame from eBay and replace it.

Glass protectors yes, but no matter how good quality a plastic screen protector is, the hardness is still only 4H max, meaning micro scratches can build up pretty soon. I mean those tiny, tiny scratches that you can hardly notice unless under the sun.
