Definitely use your screen protectors!

just wanted to post to tell you guys to definitely use a screen protector!
freak accident, but yesterday, my macbook pro alcantera case (without macbook in it) fell on my gnex and the way it fell, the corner point of the zipper fell directly straight down (straight perpendicular) on to the screen and made a really loud "PING" noise!!! My heart sank when i heard the noise. all the force had come down on that small corner of the zipper!
i seriously thought my screen had been cracked/scratched. so much that i keep checking to see if there are any scratches or cracks (OCD LOL!). i've checked the screen under reflection and see that there is no damage or scratches. whew!
the screen protector i was using was a static cling protector. it definitely took the brunt of the force. there was a nice bullet hole indentation on the screen protector that fortunately did not go through to the phone's actual screen..
if i did not have this screen protector, i definitely would have had a cracked screen.
I'm waiting for my XO skin and will be putting that on immediately as i think that a wet screen protector will do a better job than the static cling protector ( eventhough the static one did its job).

the glass of the screen is much, much stronger than your thin plastic screen protector. your post should have said that the screen stopped the screen protector from getting a hole in it

for sure. i know the glass is pretty strong, but the type of impact scared the **** outta me.
its like dropping a nail and the tail of the nail landing perpendicular on the glass and all the force being concentrated into one small point.
i seriously thought it was once of those hit-it-just-at-the-right-point-enough-to-crack-the-screen type of situations.

The content of your thread greatly disappointed me. I was expecting to see a horrifying story of the Galaxy Nexus screen being badly scratched (with pictures attached), along with an appology and regret from the OP for not using a screen protector.

There is an external coating i believe on the glass, as mine had scratched very very easily,
its is extremely faint but they do scratch...
The glass is definitely not like gorilla glass Which is hard to scratch in general...

There was a big discussion on this over at Android Central and while it is true the G-Nex doesn't use Gorilla glass, it does use something very similar to it.

I just put my screen protector on today. I've had my gnex for a week and I noticed some fine scratches all over the screen. This is with normal use, probably got scratched by a plastic label on my wallet.

does your static one covers the screen completely? Just curious.

best screen protector that doesnt hurt the brightness and quality of the display?

It's actually really really easy to scratch Gorilla Glass, Gorilla Glass meet grain of sand, grain of sand will win every time. It's really good at protecting the screen from big stuff like keys but it's very susceptible to the smaller stuff.

Are even you paying attention to the thread at all?
It's been mentioned 1,000,000 times on this forum that keys and knives are made of softer material than the screen. However, dust/dirt/sand, salt etc can have particles that are stronger that the screen, which will scratch it.
Those scratch test videos are completely useless and misleading.

Screen protectors?

Hi All,
I know that the Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass, but does anyone know how scratch resistant the screen is? I have never used screen protectors, and don't really want to put one on my Nexus, but if the screen is easily scratched I might have to think about it. Any thoughts?

I have a Zagg Invisible Shield on mine. It's really nice... adds a bit of friction, but is just a minor learning curve.

I know how you feel OP. My previous two phones had Gorilla Glass I and never felt that I needed a screen protector. However, the coating on this screen does scratch fairly easily so I recommend picking one up. I just put an XO Skins screen protector on mine and I am loving it. You can't even tell it's there.

@sn0warmy: Thanks for this. When you say it scratches easily, just how easily? I tend to treat my phones pretty gently (i.e. never in the same pocket as keys etc), so do you think I still need a protector? Is the screen at all scratch resistant?

Yes, many people are getting scratches on their phones from just random dirt in their pockets.
It sucks...I've had Gorilla Glass phones in the past, that have been thrown like a baseball at cement walls that haven't scratched or chipped, not to mention never needing a screen protector.

With all my phones I have used an Otterbox Defender series while at work and a sunglass bag when off work, out and about. It works for me, I'm not too clumsy and I am fairly careful with my phone so no scratches for me. I don't know exactly why, but I dislike having to use a screen protector.

The GNex DOES HAVE fortified glass, it's just another type without the Gorilla name.

The GNex, while a great phone, does not have the gorilla glass that you've all come to know on other phones. It's bad, and your pocket might as well be sandpaper around it. Cover it up quickly with a screen protector. I speak from experience, my GSM version GNex got "mysteriously" scratched from one day to the next.
Now the question is: Which one? Zagg is leaving horizontal lines on my screen and is pissing me off, so that's out of the question.

This is all very strange to me, because I had my SGS for nearly a year, never used a case, tossed it in my handbag or hoody pocket with my keys all the time...it has no visible scratches.
I've had my Gnex since Christmas and it already has one deep scratch and also a "ding" in the glass, both of which can be felt if you run a fingernail across the defaced area. I have not been nearly as rough with it as I was with my SGS.
I know the plural of "anecdote" is not "data", but still, my Gnex now wears a screen protector, as much as I hate the bl**dy things. I'm also waiting anxiously for someone to come out with a protective case that I don't hate.

Not that Gorilla glass can't get scratches or break (I've had both situations), but from your descriptions I get the feeling, that it will take less force to damage the GNex fortified glass.
If true and if Gorilla glass is stronger, then one can only wonder why Samsung didn't use it on the GNex, like on the SGS2. Doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, I will have to see. I hate cases and screen protection, so I will take the chance with no protection and see how it goes.

get some ghost armor, i hate screen protectors and im loving the protection from this product as so many people have had alot of scratching problems.

On the same data point, I've discovered that dry-application screen protectors are worthless on the Gnex because of the curved glass. I was afraid of the wet-application ones but I decided to try one (XO Skin) after going through 12 dry-application ones without getting a single one aligned and placed without enormous bubbles and peeling edges. I admit I suck at applying the dry ones but with the Gnex it seems pretty much impossible to do.

I consider myself to be gentle on my phones. That being said, I already have a couple small scratches in the glass that in my opinion would not have occurred with a higher grade of fortified glass. I am sure the screen curvature factors into the options they had. So what screen protector is most recommended that is invisible and does not increase friction?

I don't think there is one that's 100% drag-free, but the best one I've found is XO Skins....it doesn't have an orange peel texture, and the drag is only slight after you've broken it in a bit. When I first got mine I thought I wasn't going to be able to stand it because it was rubbery, but after two weeks of use it only feels slightly different to my SGS (which has bare GG).

whats the best screen protector? I already bought a cheap case swisstech and now im looking for a screen protector. been using the one that came with the s3(the one with the stickers attached lol) as im really afarid of smudges and scratches lol

The front is gorilla glass. It's virtually impossible to scratch under normal every day usage. Even running keys along it won't leave a mark. Smudges can always be wiped off. Naked screen is the best way to go in my books.
But if you really do want a screen protector, I think Dataflex and Steinheil make some good ones. Cheers.

It's been said 100 times already that Gorilla Glass is hard to scratch but the thin Oleophobic coating can easily get micro scratches.

In the real world micro scratches make it harder to see in strong light but when your screen protector gets scratched you just stick a new one on, but scratching your screen means either grinding the scratches out or paying $260 for a new one.

$5 for a screen protector seems like good insurance to me.
I use barely there anti glare screen protector. Actually helps with the visibility of the display in bright conditions too.

how is zagg's screen protector?

I've used zagg for my S2 and I was really satisfied. Only downside is that the screen get a bit less responsive and it would t look so clear.

My friend kept his SGS3 in his gf's handbag the other day - which would be considered normal everyday usage. When he retrieved it, there were three bad scratches on it:

The scratches are more difficult to see in real life as you'd be looking directly at it (as opposed to this light-catching angle), but they're definitely there. My fingernail gets caught in it.
If he had a screen protector on, it would be a simple $10 replacement. But since he didn't, his resale value has now gone down the drain. It'll cost $230-300 to replace the screen.
His gf says she has never had that happen to her screen, and she keeps it in the same handbag. She does have a screen protector though.
Gorilla glass is scratch *resistant*, not scratch-*proof*. Metal might not scratch it easily, but simple things like sand can.

Hairline scratches after 2 weeks

So... I've had my GN2 for exactly 2 weeks. I got a flip cover bundled with it, I figured the combination of the cover and my pocket would be sufficient protection from scratches. I clean the cover constantly to make sure there's no grit on it, and I wipe down the screen a couple times a day, because with my Galaxy S, I started noticing little knicks right away.
Checked the screen yesterday... aaaaand it's scratched. They're very light scratches, but they're long, and the screen has never touched anything but my finger, the pen, and the felt cover. For a device that's meant for use with a stylus, and especially for one with such a huge screen, I expected more.
Honestly, I think a screen protector would cover the scratches up. Long story short, if you're a stickler for surface quality, don't trust Gorilla Glass. I'm really surprised that this is still an issue. We're on what now, gorilla glass 4?

And However annoying, hairline scratches, (the ones visible only by angling your device at a light source for reflection) are perfectly normal.
I myself have actually taken a scalpel to gorilla glass in the past and left nothing more than hairline scratches indistinguishable from the other barely noticeable ones.

If you expect perfection you should have a screen protector like me. I'm exactly the same way, and I had the screen protectors before I had my phone. Gorilla glass can be EASILY scratched by sand. It's just a fact of life. If it's the same hardness or harder than the Gorilla glass you can scratch it with it. And sand is usually quartz, which is the same hardness as gorilla glass.

if it's in your pocket, maybe a sand or something like it, you know that sand is pretty much stronger than metals.

Sounds like some grit got into a pocket. The stuff doesn't magically scratch itself.

Ok, update. I realized that the scratches are right where I slide my thumb to unlock the phone. I'm gonna guess that the Note has some kind of extra coating for smoother stylus use, which isn't as hard as the glass itself. I can't decide if this warrants a screen protector, which could sacrifice clarity and pen usability.

you can always get glass protector like GLAS.t and you won't sacrifice clarity or pen usability.

Screen protector dose not bother S-pen, or clarity on the screen.

I just looked at the screen in the sun. There's a scratch for just about every time I've unlocked the phone, so either I'm growing cubic zirconium out of my skin, or something's wrong here. Not that growing cubic zirconium out of my skin would be normal.
Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully the adhesive of the scene protector will fill in the scratches.

Yup, sand is tougher than the glass on any cellphone I've used so far. I hate screen protectors, but after the mess I made of my Galaxy Nexus and Iphone 4, I didn't even leave the mall without half ass putting a cheap screen protector on.

+1 on Screen protector. I also waited 1 week before I started using my note2 just to wait for my case to arrive. Oh that was a very tough waiting period.
I don't use my spen too much either.. came from skyrocket so I'm accustomed to just using my fingers.

No screen protectors don't sacrifice clarity or pen usability

Weird, haven't used a screen protector on my Note or S3 and no issues here. Did the angeling in the light and everything. I guess I am that lucky?

I work in a steel fabrication area, with microscopic dust particles everywhere. And to my surprise no scratch damage is present.
There is no screen protector on the device, and I never wipe the screen at work.
When I get home, I'll shower then use the damp towel to clean the device.
So far the glass seems okay.
The stories of this glass being soft are puzzling me a bit, as they seem to swing wildly to both ends of the quality spectrum.
I suppose only time will tell for me on this one. But so far it's doing well. ...g

I use outterbox and also a screen protector, and I haven't notice lost of anything. Only thing i don't like is outter box screen sometimes gets humidity in it.

Sorry to hear that…*Did you keep it in your pocket with keys, coins, etc.?

I have a pixel XL screen protector on my A7. I cut it to fit the A7.

I thought you had cut a Note 7 cover to fit?

I've had the same experience. I didn't use a screen protector for a period of maybe, 3 weeks? And noticed the micro scratches also when viewing the device at extreme angles. [near 180 obtuse angles? Or near 0 degree acute angles respective to the plane of the phone? Sorry math people.]
One of the few things about the phone that make me a little disappointed with ZTE.
Since then, I've been using a liquid screen protector and it works well.. I've dropped my phone once. From about 4-5 feet up onto concrete with no damage to screen but a metal flake on the upper and lower housing.
I would recommend using something.. Anything, as some protection is better than no protection. Be it from micro scratches, hairline cracks, or complete screen destruction.

The problem is Gorilla Glass 4… It's more prone to tiny scratches than Gorilla Glass 3. But don't most smartphones, including the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy line use GG4 as well?

No screen protector here as I couldn't find one, and luckily I have no scratches at all. The screen seems incredibly resistant!

So you removed the one that came pre-installed on the phone?

Actually the EU version does not come with a screen protector. So maybe he has that version. i do

That's the reason I've always uesd tempered glass - micro scratches! To all the people thinking it's because of keys or coins, etc. in your pocket- it's not, as most keys and coins are usually softer metal that can't scratch Gorila Glass (that's how they're able to make keys for you from blanks).
It's little particles of sand that can end up with the rest of your pocket lint that's believed to be the cause of microscratches. Sand is usually silica which is 6-7 on MOH's scale for hardness which is above what any of the Gorilla Glass 1-5 has been rated to protect.

I'm now on my second Axon 7, due to a cracked screen. I was using an aftermarket flexible protector. Looking for a tempered glass option for the replacement phone.
On the upside, ZTE does at least include accidental damage coverage in the warranty. It's still $80 for accidental damage, but that's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new phone or getting the screen repaired.

Which aftermarket flexible protector? How did it get cracked, and which case were you using, if any?
In my opinion, the case is the most important element of protection from cracking in case of drops, unless the screen hits something sharp, like a rock or the corner of something —*that's when you need tempered glass.

Good point. I wasn't using any kind of case, and it likely would have helped in my scenario. The protector was a DeltaShield BodyArmor Full Coverage Screen Protector. I dropped the phone on to my concrete porch. I think it hit flat face down on the concrete.
I have 2 different cases on order: a Spigen Rugged Armor case and a CoverON Hard Slim Hybrid Kickstand case. We'll see which one I like better.
