Like buttered toast...

...my naked N5 slipped from my cold, numb fingers and landed flat but face down on a NYC sidewalk a couple days ago. At first it looked like a "soft landing" but no such luck and now I'm looking at a screen replacement (screen itself OK, but glass cracked all to hell).
So now I'm wondering if this could have been prevented simply by a case and not necessarily a screen protector as well. I've used cases such as an Otterbox Commuter in the past but never dropped any of those phones to the extent this one went down. It seems to me that any case with a slight lip on the front -- as most of them must have -- would be enough since the screen itself would not hit the ground.
From research on this forum and web sites I'm currently favoring the Spigen Thin Armor case but am wondering if a high-quality screen protector would also be worth it. My screen at the time it was damaged really had no scratches at all, so the Gorilla Glass was doing its job. Would one of those tempered glass protectors also provide shatter protection? Or would a decent case by itself be sufficient?

Even with a case on, if there was a small rock or a jagged edge on the ground that nicks the screen, it would have still been toast anyway. This is regardless of if there was a lip protecting it or not. It all depends on what's on the ground by chance.
A tempered glass protector probably could have saved the screen though, since you said it landed flat on its face. Tempered glass protectors are perfect for impacts that land face down, not so much on edges or sides. You will see most demonstrations of tempered glass done with nails, hammers, drop tests, etc. with the phone being impacted directly on the face. If it impacts from the side, there is a good chance the screen could still break as tempered glass isn't really designed to protect from those types of impacts.
That is where the case with a lip comes in. Those are meant to protect from side and edge impacts. Most drops generally don't land flat like yours, they tend to bounce around on corners first, so the case would absorb most of the impact and not the phone directly.
Your best bet is to both have a tempered glass screen protector (for flat impacts), and a bumper frame or TPU case (for the rest).
I use a Nillkin H+ Tempered Glass screen protector and a bumper frame (back not covered as I put a skin on the back) and I'm pretty much covered for most brain lapse moments.

Once you learn the hinge method for putting on screen protectors, you won't have air bubbles or dust underneath. You can't even tell my phone has a screen protector on it. Youtube has several videos on how to do it properly.
I refuse to pay big $$$ for glass protectors because you only get one of them, and you either do it right, or throw it away. With plastic protectors, you get several for a few dollars.

That's not true. I applied and removed my Nillkin more then 10 times during the application to get rid of the dust I missed trapped underneath because I suck at applying screen protectors. It reapplied the same every time. All you have to do is make sure you don't firmly press it down and you're fine. This is even after you see the adhesion process occur. It will still peel up. The adhesive takes a few hours to a day (depending on brand) to fully stick/cure.
If a person like me can apply one glass screen protector, anyone else will do it better. One is all you need.
Plastic will only give basic scratch protection and leave a greasy screen after a while. If it takes the same fall his did, the screen would still be done for.

Cases protect the actual body of the phone, and maybe the screen if it happens to land flat. But if a rock of some other elevated object hits the screen then it will be done for. And a plastic screen protector will do nothing, that protects against scratches like from sand. A glass one would be the best bet for shatter protection. I've seen a person take a hammer to a screen with a glass screen protector on. The protector was rekt but the phone screen was fine.

There are 2 that I would probably recommend. I'm currently using a transparent bumper case off of ebay. I did a review here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/lucency-transparent-bumper-case-review-t2690108. It is $2.88 shipped. If you do choose this one, I would stick to black. After using them for a while now, the various colours tend to stain easily, but the black doesn't. It is just for light drop protection, but since the main body is a harder plastic, it won't absorb a higher drop like a softer bumper frame, or a TPU case would. I personally like it because it is transparent and you can still see the sides of the phone and the skin through it.
The other is the replica Nexus 4 bumper, for the Nexus 5. Mine is still in the mail so I haven't tried it out yet, but others have bought it and it seems to have gotten pretty good reviews overall. http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/replica-official-nexus-4-bumper-nexus-5-t2698422. It's a little bit pricier at $12.99 off Amazon, or around $8 - $10 off Aliexpress.

There are many choices for thicker protection cases. Properly applied screen protectors don't have any bubbles.

Ways to potentially hide/remove scratches on the Nexus %

Well, I've had my nexus 5 for little over 2 months now, and the screen is just covered with surface scratches. It's really annoying as I have never dropped the phone, or left it in my pocket with my keys, nevertheless, despite my best efforts the screen is riddled in micro scratches only visible in the sun. Is there any way I can remove these easily? or could I use a screen protector to hide them? Also, isn't gorilla glass 3 supposed to be scratch resistant, because from what I've seen it's really not.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Since you posted in this section and didn't use a (?), I thought you where providing a magic product to erase scratches
You can hide/reduce visibility of some or many of them with a screen protector but not all.

+1 to above. Matte screen protector helps a bit. Depends if it's your thing though.

Sorry about that, but yeah, i think I may pick up one of those invisible shields, but these scratches are quite thin and light. so who knows i guess we'll wait and see.

For microscratches pretty much any screen protector will do.

I'll echo the above sentiments. I had (well, have) a barely noticeable, yet nonetheless aggravating scratch, about a centimeter in length, toward the bottom of my display. A regular plastic (non-matte) screen protector solved that issue, as well as completely hiding a giant 'permanent' smudge caused by my oleophobic coating wearing off (but that's another story). So you'll hopefully be good to go.

Metals don't scratch glass. Sand particles do.
If the tiny scratches that can only be viewed at a certain angle under strong light when the screen is off irritate you that much, you may have to use a plastic screen protector and change it every 3 days, or a glass protector and change it every few months.
Gorilla Glass 3 is already the most scratch-resistant thing you can normally get for your phone. Any protectors will scratch worse than it.
There is no way to remove the scratches without damaging the oleophobic layer. A way to "remove" the scratch is to use toothpaste, but that actually scratches the sides of the scratch to "flatten" it. The oleophobic layer will be damaged and you will leave bad smudges on that area.
The best way is to buy a Nexus 5 front frame from eBay and replace it.

Wow isnt 3days too often? I would say with a good quality screen protector it should at least be good for 3-6months.

Glass protectors yes, but no matter how good quality a plastic screen protector is, the hardness is still only 4H max, meaning micro scratches can build up pretty soon. I mean those tiny, tiny scratches that you can hardly notice unless under the sun.

[Q] Tempered glass

I want to use my phone without any case. I'm not afraid of scratches, but I'm afraid of screen cracking if I drop my phone. So my question is: if I use tempered glass, will it protect my screen from cracking? Or they will both be cracked? And I also want that glass is the thinnest. So I was thinking about getting 0.15 mm tempered glass. Is it different from 0.3mm or 0.4mm in term of protection, or does only the hardness matter?

I've dropped mine many many times onto wood and concrete without a screen protector. The phone is a little chipped and scratched, but the screen is absolutely fine.
A nilkin tempered glass screen protector is a good investment as it feels brilliant although when I dropped mine with that on it smashed the corner of the protector.
The edges of the phone are slightly raised so without the screen protector on, a drop onto a flat surface will not damage the screen but will damage the screen protector.
A drop onto a raised surface like a stone would probably break the screen protector but don't know if it'd also damage the screen.
Question is, how often do you drop your phone, and how much do you want to spend on glass protectors?

I was thinking about Nillkin, but I think it would be too thick. So I'm considering those 0.15 mm protectors in this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc...5mm-dot-view-friendly-tempered-glass-t2810825
I also thought about xtremeguard, since I use their normal protectors and they are great. It 50$, but with 85% off coupon it's just a few bucks. Only problem is that it's 0.4mm.
Which one would you recommend? I'm planning to spend 10-15$, because 40-50$ is really to much for a protector, in my opinion.

If your looking for it, but after putting on, I haven't paid much attention to it. I dropped my phone once, chipped away at the edges of the shield. The seller replaced it free. I like tempered glass, it is the only screen proctor I will put on my phones. The only bad thing is that it goes edge to edge with the glass. So if you have a case that touches the screen, that might cause a problem. I use a thin clear cars I got off ebay. Works for me.

The only annoying thing could be top edge, when I pull down notification bar.
Case wouldn't be a problem, because I'm planning to use phone without case, and that why I'm looking for a tempered glass, to protect screen from cracking.

Actually then it could be a benefit, because going edge to edge means you will probably not touch the edge. And the edge is not sharp, nice and smooth. The price is cheap enough to try it. I have tried several over the last few months, mostly from China. But this is US born and works and feels great.

I never use screen protectors, I think they're ugly and ruin the look of the phone

I never use screen protectors, bit a thin case and pouch for on the go...

I guess it depends on how careful you can be with your phone. I never use a screen protector but I'm always aware of where my phone is (i.e. not putting my keys in my pocket that has my phone in it) I also have a Google fabric case which let's me keep a good grip on the phone.

I also don't use a screen protector, or a case. But I'm careful with my phone and want to enjoy the device for what it was designed for. No since keeping it prestine just for the next owner.

Haven't used them since my blackberry days. Going fully naked with this phone. It's nice and grippy.

Don't use one, saving money in the long run as I'll just replace it myself for the cost of a screen protector. Besides, with the way on installing them now with UV light and LOCA glue, it's as labor-intensive as installing an actual screen.
Cases do a great job in preventing the screen from breaking anyhow.

This is exactly what I'm doing as well. Tried an IQ Shield "skin" type protector, but the edges lifted up which looked terrible to me. Also got the tempered glass protector from the Google store, and while that looked good it killed touch responsiveness so I removed it. Just going with no screen protector and the Google fabric case (which I think is my favorite case ever on any phone) and all has been good.

I use one only because I am around fine particulates like dirt and metal shavings daily. Whitestone dome. The only drawback is when playing fps games, it sometimes registers ghost touches.

I didn't use a screen protector or case with my HTC EVO 4G, GSII and GSIII (Until I broke the screen). Then started using a screen protector and case (For drop protection not really scratch protection) for my GS5 and Nexus 5X. Since none of the cheap screen protectors fit well for the Pixel 2 XL, I've been without one since October and it's been scratch free.

I use one, but not for shatter resistance. I use it to protect the screen from hairline scratches. The dirt on your skin will eventually scratch and scuff the screen to the point of being visible and I just can't stand permanent scratches on the screen surface.
I personally use a hybrid screen protector (flexible glass) because it's so much thinner than tempered glass and still feels like glass.

This. Hairline scratches and the oleophobic coating wearing off is why I always use a tgsp.

This is the 1st phone that I didn't use a screen protector on and as far as I can tell the screen still looks new after 6 months.

Comes down to how anal u are. If you can live with minor scuffs or scratches. Go protectorless. I cannot. This display is too beautiful and how the phone is holding its value. Imma keep it fresh to get a good price when P3XL comes out. So I tried 3 different ones before settling on Whitestone. Which looks and feels like the natural screen.

Protector all the way considering how easy this phone is to scratch Gorilla Glass 5 is trash.

I've always put screen protectors on my phones ever since the purchase of my very first one. As the user mentioned above, it's less for the screen shattering but more so for preventing hairline scratches.
I've only been able to find wet apply protectors that work best; every other glass protector on Amazon has had really bad reviews for not sticking on the edges.
If anyone has good recommendations for a glass protector (or even that flexible glass mentioned above) please let me know where you got it from!
This wet apply protector sticks very well to the edges unlike the standard glass protectors available, however there is that classic Orange Peel effect and the screen looks a bit grainy under light or white backgrounds.
The only screen protector I've been able to find with good reviews is the one with that UV light install and it's about $60, way too much for a protector in my opinion.

Interesting claim as Gorilla Glass 5 and 4 have the same scratch resistance as seen in Jerry Rig Everything videos.

I always use a matte finish screen protector so it's easier to use outdoors in the sunlight and no fingerprints

I have never used protectors and have never had scratches. On this phone I do. It's possible I am doing something different but can't imagine what?

Accessories Screen protector with Gorilla Glass Victus glass

How good is Gorilla Glass Victus glass? Will it still need a Screen protector? The curved edges make my hesitant about using a screen protector.
Thoughts?

I looked at JerryRigEverything's videos on the S20 Ultra and S21 Ultra (or Gorilla Glass 6 vs Victus)
It seemed that it scratched just the same. I also saw an article where the Corning person admitted that it'll still get scratched by sand, dust, coins, and keys in your pocket.
That said, I haven't decided what I want to do yet. I love tempered glass protectors but they're usually terrible on curved screens and I hate the plastic feeling ones.

It's still a 6/7 on mohs scale.
The only difference is that Victus is slightly more durable, meaning it can endure a bit more force/pressure (newton), something like 8 instead of 5. So your phone will still break and scratch, but it requires a bit more effort to damage it.
Of course it won't help you with sand or anything solid that might make a dent with little amount of effort/pressure.

I haven't used screen protectors in years now. Just don't keep your phone in the same pocket with your keys and you'll be fine. There's only a small percentage of people out there who would need a screen protector, because they operate in rough environments.

Every time I've tried that, the screen gets scratched. All the way up to iPhone 12 pro max.

I wish it was this easy in desert climates. Even with shaking out my pockets regularly, a stray piece of sand always manages to find its way to my screens within the first couple months.
FWIW I had the S21 Ultra before this (also using Victus) and it managed to get scratched. Nothing deep, but it was noticeable in sunlight. I'm planning on keeping the Pixel for a good while, so I actually picked up a TPU screen protector for it.

At this point there is no such screen protector that doesn't degrade usability of this phone. Curved screen AND the damn on-screen fingerprint reader made sure of that. It's down to everyone's personal philosophy, but in my view the phone should serve me, not the other way around.
For what it's worth, even without screen protectors I didn't have any visible scratches on my Pixel 2 XL or 4 XL, after 2 years of usage each, so I'm gonna risk it this time too.

After 6 days I have the first scratch in the display. The device was always carried isolated in a cargo pocket. I will probably send it back.

And that's just... completely untrue. I'm using a TPU based protector, fingerprint works 100%, every damn time. When the UV based protectors come out, they'll work 100%, every time. Optical protectors are a LOT easier to use with screen protectors.

Sand will scratch any type of glass. I had a old S4 that was nearing the end of it's service life.
It had no scratches after over 3 years and bare glass feels better so... within 3-4 months with no protector it had 3 easily visible scratches. In spite of keeping it as clean as possible using a microfiber cloth for cleaning.
Unprotected glass will get scratched...

I always put screen protectors on my phones until I got the Essential Phone. No tempered glass screen protectors would work on it, and I did not like the alternatives. I decided to go without one and just "try" to be careful. It did not take long before I had a lot of tiny scratches all over my screen. When I got a deep scratch on my PH-1, I went back to the TPU wet apply screen protector that I did not like, but it is better than the alternative. I did not use my Pixel 6 Pro as my daily driver until my screen protector arrived the next day. I have to say that the TPU screen protector I purchased is much better than the one I used for my PH-1. Very pleased with it. I think the brand is IMBZBK or something like that. I have never heard of it before, and only got it until I could get a brand name protector. I may continue using it until it gives me trouble. I highly recommend a screen protector on your Pixel 6!

Modern phones displays can withstand a 6-7 on Mohs scale.
Sand is a 7.
Hardened steel is, by the way, 7-8.
Aluminium is, by the way, 2.5-3. Only because it's mixed with other metals & refined can it withstand some of the everyday life abuse. It's still **** compared to hardened steel. It's a shame that only Apple uses stainless steel with their IPhones. I would love to have a Pixel with stainless steel. The few grams I don't care about, give me the durability...

Apples Sapphire is sh*t. It's fake. They only use a partial sapphire screen, which means that it's hardness is still a 6-7.
I think HTC's sapphire U Ultra is the only phone/smart device to date with a decent ("real") Sapphire screen. Other than that you will only find expensive watches with a pure Sapphire screen.

To my knowledge optical sapphire has only been used for camera lense protection. Optically it's not as clear as glass, it has a slight tint. I still wouldn't buy an Apple...
While sand is the most common abrasive floating around it's not the only. Gravel can range up to RH 8 so a screen protector can save it from marring in a glancing slide or a low impact drop.
Face plants into gravel are always a thrill...

I can only repeat myself: Apples implementation of Sapphire on their apple watches & on the backside of devices (camera lense protection) is fake. It was tested all day long on Youtube by people using Mohs picks, it scratched at 6 and 7, which means that it's only Sapphire in name. There is no optical "sapphire" used by Apple, it's a fancy marketing word and only that.

Yeah as said before marketing nonsense. I think the saphire would shatter too easy if they needed to get it that thin for weight control
