How good is Gorilla Glass Victus glass? Will it still need a Screen protector? The curved edges make my hesitant about using a screen protector.

I looked at JerryRigEverything's videos on the S20 Ultra and S21 Ultra (or Gorilla Glass 6 vs Victus)
It seemed that it scratched just the same. I also saw an article where the Corning person admitted that it'll still get scratched by sand, dust, coins, and keys in your pocket.
That said, I haven't decided what I want to do yet. I love tempered glass protectors but they're usually terrible on curved screens and I hate the plastic feeling ones.
It's still a 6/7 on mohs scale.
The only difference is that Victus is slightly more durable, meaning it can endure a bit more force/pressure (newton), something like 8 instead of 5. So your phone will still break and scratch, but it requires a bit more effort to damage it.
Of course it won't help you with sand or anything solid that might make a dent with little amount of effort/pressure.
I haven't used screen protectors in years now. Just don't keep your phone in the same pocket with your keys and you'll be fine. There's only a small percentage of people out there who would need a screen protector, because they operate in rough environments.

Every time I've tried that, the screen gets scratched. All the way up to iPhone 12 pro max.

I wish it was this easy in desert climates. Even with shaking out my pockets regularly, a stray piece of sand always manages to find its way to my screens within the first couple months.
FWIW I had the S21 Ultra before this (also using Victus) and it managed to get scratched. Nothing deep, but it was noticeable in sunlight. I'm planning on keeping the Pixel for a good while, so I actually picked up a TPU screen protector for it.

At this point there is no such screen protector that doesn't degrade usability of this phone. Curved screen AND the damn on-screen fingerprint reader made sure of that. It's down to everyone's personal philosophy, but in my view the phone should serve me, not the other way around.
For what it's worth, even without screen protectors I didn't have any visible scratches on my Pixel 2 XL or 4 XL, after 2 years of usage each, so I'm gonna risk it this time too.
After 6 days I have the first scratch in the display. The device was always carried isolated in a cargo pocket. I will probably send it back.

And that's just... completely untrue. I'm using a TPU based protector, fingerprint works 100%, every damn time. When the UV based protectors come out, they'll work 100%, every time. Optical protectors are a LOT easier to use with screen protectors.

Sand will scratch any type of glass. I had a old S4 that was nearing the end of it's service life.
It had no scratches after over 3 years and bare glass feels better so... within 3-4 months with no protector it had 3 easily visible scratches. In spite of keeping it as clean as possible using a microfiber cloth for cleaning.
Unprotected glass will get scratched...
I always put screen protectors on my phones until I got the Essential Phone. No tempered glass screen protectors would work on it, and I did not like the alternatives. I decided to go without one and just "try" to be careful. It did not take long before I had a lot of tiny scratches all over my screen. When I got a deep scratch on my PH-1, I went back to the TPU wet apply screen protector that I did not like, but it is better than the alternative. I did not use my Pixel 6 Pro as my daily driver until my screen protector arrived the next day. I have to say that the TPU screen protector I purchased is much better than the one I used for my PH-1. Very pleased with it. I think the brand is IMBZBK or something like that. I have never heard of it before, and only got it until I could get a brand name protector. I may continue using it until it gives me trouble. I highly recommend a screen protector on your Pixel 6!

Modern phones displays can withstand a 6-7 on Mohs scale.
Sand is a 7.
Hardened steel is, by the way, 7-8.
Aluminium is, by the way, 2.5-3. Only because it's mixed with other metals & refined can it withstand some of the everyday life abuse. It's still **** compared to hardened steel. It's a shame that only Apple uses stainless steel with their IPhones. I would love to have a Pixel with stainless steel. The few grams I don't care about, give me the durability...

Apples Sapphire is sh*t. It's fake. They only use a partial sapphire screen, which means that it's hardness is still a 6-7.
I think HTC's sapphire U Ultra is the only phone/smart device to date with a decent ("real") Sapphire screen. Other than that you will only find expensive watches with a pure Sapphire screen.

To my knowledge optical sapphire has only been used for camera lense protection. Optically it's not as clear as glass, it has a slight tint. I still wouldn't buy an Apple...
While sand is the most common abrasive floating around it's not the only. Gravel can range up to RH 8 so a screen protector can save it from marring in a glancing slide or a low impact drop.
Face plants into gravel are always a thrill...

I can only repeat myself: Apples implementation of Sapphire on their apple watches & on the backside of devices (camera lense protection) is fake. It was tested all day long on Youtube by people using Mohs picks, it scratched at 6 and 7, which means that it's only Sapphire in name. There is no optical "sapphire" used by Apple, it's a fancy marketing word and only that.

, few days back i have noticed one noticeable scratch on the screen , strange as i am treating my Nexus very carefully.
My galaxy S which has the gorilla glass never had scratches and it is now more than 6 months old.

Just dropped mine 5ft to the pavement landed face first and the battery cover came off. It's still flawless I don't know how but it is.... I was expecting it to be cracked but I'm pretty impressed!

I have mine in my pocket all the time and it's perfectly fine,not even one scratch.
i used my gn with the screen film still on it for over a week until i got my screen protectors in the mail, no glass screen is unscratchable/unbreakable. there are plenty of substances around that will scratch gorilla glass (eg sand) and if even a tiny bit ends up in your pocket, better have a screen protector!
Yea my original G2x had 2 tiny micro scratches on it. Not noticable unless viewing a white background, more commonly when viewing webpages before they fully load.
The LG Updater bricked mine and got an exchange. Haven't had a problem with my new one but just goes to show.

Wise advice here, but nobody sells screen protectors for the nexus where I am. I've ordered some online and I'll be taking it to a professional to get stuck on (every time I do it I leave bubbles; yes I've watched numerous instructional videos alas I cannot do it) - I've only ordered three protectors, hopefully that is more than enough.
All the screen (even Gorilla) would have chance to get scratches...

Yeah I'm gonna have to get some too. I always take extreme care of my phones (whether in my pocket or out) and it already has a small, yet noticeable scratch on the bottom. Definitely need a ZAGG or the like

I'm tired of hearing people say even gorilla glass will scratch blah blah blah. Gorilla glass has proven to me to be infinitely more scratch proof than the glass on the Nexus. Like 100 fold over. After a while I was treating my Vibrant like it was bullet proof. Throwing it across the room, dropping it scores of times, putting it into my pocket with keys, etc etc... and to this day - "not one scratch on it", not one! For those who think sand in your pocket would scratch gorilla glass, you better think again. Obviously there will be rare occassions where it would happen but for the most part, it'll survive without any issues.
My nexus on the hand has been babied to death and less than a week into owning it, 3 scratches.
I will never, EVER buy a phone without gorilla glass again.
I've been rocking my Incredible since day one without screen protection and it's still mint. (besides a complete crack in upper right corner (in an area that is beyond the display) from one of the worse drops, which was more of a drunken throw). I really hope that the Nexus can handle my lifestyle, but sounds like this thread is reporting mixed reviews. I refuse to wear a condom so I hope I get one of the good ones...
p.s. I surf alot in the summer and sand all over but still no scratches. I guess it has to hit with the right angle and friction???

One grain of sand or salt + friction (i.e. pocket) and even the Gorilla Glass 2 on the RAZR gets scratched.
You can run a key across the screen all day long, but it only take a granule of something to etch a deep scratch.
If u get a decent screen protector and install it well (I know it ain't easy) it will look/feel as good as the naked glass, and then u dont have to worry - and in a year when u pull it off, the glass will be PERFECT. Small price to pay. The Galaxy Nexus is so thin that with a slim TPU case it's still crazy thin, and you will keep it in perfect condition

I'm sorry to say, but you should have ordered the SGP Flex instead. The Ultra Oleophobic ones don't extend to the edge of the screen, because they use the dry adhesive method, and if they went right to the edge of the curved screen they would peel.
Frankly, it looks pretty ugly having a band around the edge that's not covered. Plus, because they don't extend to the edges, it's much more noticeable if you get it off centre.
As mentioned in the other thread i have a couple of tiny scratches after 3 weeks of use and never ever putting anything else in my pocket with it. Disappointing.

Couldn't agree more. I was the same way with both my Fascinate and now my charge. Neither device has gotten a single scratch.

Sand will scratch sand will scratch sand will scratch sand. What do I mean by that? ALL glass (including Gorilla Glass and its differently arranged superficial crystalline structure) is the same molecule- SiO2 or "silica." Is there variation within silica? - yes, but minutely.
[good read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness Geology and Mineralogy have huge unrealized relevancy in everyday life- just like under-appreciated physics] The variation will not give silica the hardness of say, "topaz" (at 8 on the scale), but rather is usually due to impurities (additional minerals) that weaken it down to ~ 6 or so. Gorilla Glass seems to be a purified silica, maxing out at 7 hardness. Quartz crystals (what we call "sand") also usually sits at 7 (chemical weathering can both purify and contaminate depending upon the situation), and do not have to be just "sand" like beach/desert sand. Sand is a size classification, you also have "silt" which is just smaller (down to microscopic) quartz crystals, and is "aerial saltating" (airborne- carried by the air but not in solution with it). Many other minerals may be present in the "cloud" that hovers about <50' from the earth's surface due to weathering that will scratch just about anything, so "grit" is a huge issue for ANY screen. Gorilla Glass is nicer than other glass types (although according to the Vickers scale Corning uses, not by much), but it is not invincible and items that can/will scratch are much too common to be flippantly dismissed. I have a nice half inch long scratch in my screen. And its not just a scuff, I mean a scratch you can feel!!
Personally I think the whole gorilla glass is a scheme to make you think you have a better product.
I never put anything remotely rough in my pocket with my phone, never set it on the screen, drop it ...blah blah blah. Some how some way I woke up today and found a scratch!! It was nice while it lasted, but I guess it has officially been "broken" in.

Gorilla glass resists breakage and is thinner than comparable-strength traditional glass. Nothing is scratch-proof.

I used to be one to always use a case and screen protector, but when I had the Evo3d the screen protector ruined the 3d so I kept it off.
I liked the feel of the glass better so I left it off my E4GT, and one day I cleaned the screen and created a inch long scratch. I am assuming there was a piece of dirt on the screen cleaning cloth I always use.
The gorilla glass is to help with broken screens (think how many iphones have broken glass), not scratches. It bothers the crap out of me. I will be an invisashield customer again on my next phone...

Gorilla Glass is Resistant to scratches, pits, chips, breaks, etc. under certain conditions, where glass would not be.
Under other conditions, hardly any material which can be used for the screen of a Smartphone screen is Impervious to the above, at this time.
With the above being said, I recently noticed faint, light scratches when viewing my E4GT under certain Sun angles.
I applied a screen protector a short while ago to lessen the risks of deeper scratches, etc.
I think the issues are:
- many believe Gorilla Glass is Impervious to damage.
- advertisement and spec sheets are not as clear as they could be regarding the real world properties of Gorilla Glass.
Oh, Be Careful where there is SAND, aka THE BEACH ;-)

Yeah..maybe a sand issue...I was in Florida over the weekend.
Lesson learned...I do like the feel of the bare glass, but may have to invest in a screen protector for the future.

In the past, I've tried the following screen protectors:
1) Boxwave
2) Zagg InvisibleSHIELD
3) Steinheil Crystal Clear
I am currently using #3, and like it the best.
2 to a pack.
I usually screw up the first application with any protector, so having 2 is a plus.
Very transparent. Feel is very smooth.
Finger gliding is Excellent.
Goes on Dry.
Scratch resistance is pretty good. Actually very good. But remember the MOHs Hardness Scale examples I previously listed.
#3 here also, love it, no bubbles at all, great stuff.

I've dropped my phone numerous times from a good distance but one day I had it in my back pocket (not the first time) and sat down. When I pulled my phone out it had a cracked screen -__-
I also have some scratches on my device. Gorilla is not diamond. But I still don't use screen protector, after 2 years, maybe I upgrade another phone.
Like the poster on the first page said..the grains of sand will get you if you aren't careful. I got a little scratch on my Nexus that way and I went right out and got a screen protector for my Epic Touch. I definitely prefer the feel of bare screen but a scratch really irritates me

Lotus Glass is called Corning Gorilla Glass 2. I believe Lotus Glass was the speculated name given prior to it officially becoming available. I'm unsure, if any, what devices are currently using it.
I've read on the Corning site that is has the same scratch, break resistant,etc. properties, but that it can be made up to 20% thinner, and keep the same strength and properties as the original Gorilla Glass.

i dropped my phone down some tile stairs. it must have had about 15 contacts and almost slid from the second floor to the first floor.... only had bumps on the bezel and slight scratches on the screen. not noticeable when the screen was on... very durable i must say.
Personally I just can't bring myself to use a screen protector or case. Part of the reason I picked this phone was because of it's profile. The idea of hiding it away in a bulky case and noticeable screen protector makes me cringe.
I don't find it too hard to be careful with my phone. I bought my E4GT at release and I've never dropped it or sat on it and there are no scratches on the screen save for one tiny, faint one that I can only see if the screen is off and the light hits it just right.
Granted people with certain lifestyles can't get away with this. My dad is a mechanic and if it weren't in a case he'd destroy his phone inside a week. Luckily I'm practically a hermit with my face buried in textbooks all day long...
PS I forgot, I do keep a TPU case laying around for traveling. I haven't used it yet, but if I were going somewhere potentially hazardous to my phone I would.

I have a pixel XL screen protector on my A7. I cut it to fit the A7.
I thought you had cut a Note 7 cover to fit?

I've had the same experience. I didn't use a screen protector for a period of maybe, 3 weeks? And noticed the micro scratches also when viewing the device at extreme angles. [near 180 obtuse angles? Or near 0 degree acute angles respective to the plane of the phone? Sorry math people.]
One of the few things about the phone that make me a little disappointed with ZTE.
Since then, I've been using a liquid screen protector and it works well.. I've dropped my phone once. From about 4-5 feet up onto concrete with no damage to screen but a metal flake on the upper and lower housing.
I would recommend using something.. Anything, as some protection is better than no protection. Be it from micro scratches, hairline cracks, or complete screen destruction.

The problem is Gorilla Glass 4… It's more prone to tiny scratches than Gorilla Glass 3. But don't most smartphones, including the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy line use GG4 as well?
No screen protector here as I couldn't find one, and luckily I have no scratches at all. The screen seems incredibly resistant!

Actually the EU version does not come with a screen protector. So maybe he has that version. i do
That's the reason I've always uesd tempered glass - micro scratches! To all the people thinking it's because of keys or coins, etc. in your pocket- it's not, as most keys and coins are usually softer metal that can't scratch Gorila Glass (that's how they're able to make keys for you from blanks).
It's little particles of sand that can end up with the rest of your pocket lint that's believed to be the cause of microscratches. Sand is usually silica which is 6-7 on MOH's scale for hardness which is above what any of the Gorilla Glass 1-5 has been rated to protect.
I'm now on my second Axon 7, due to a cracked screen. I was using an aftermarket flexible protector. Looking for a tempered glass option for the replacement phone.
On the upside, ZTE does at least include accidental damage coverage in the warranty. It's still $80 for accidental damage, but that's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new phone or getting the screen repaired.

Which aftermarket flexible protector? How did it get cracked, and which case were you using, if any?
In my opinion, the case is the most important element of protection from cracking in case of drops, unless the screen hits something sharp, like a rock or the corner of something —*that's when you need tempered glass.

Good point. I wasn't using any kind of case, and it likely would have helped in my scenario. The protector was a DeltaShield BodyArmor Full Coverage Screen Protector. I dropped the phone on to my concrete porch. I think it hit flat face down on the concrete.
I have 2 different cases on order: a Spigen Rugged Armor case and a CoverON Hard Slim Hybrid Kickstand case. We'll see which one I like better.
I don't use protectors or cases, just a slim Spiggen sometimes when working outside , but kept the Samsung screen protector on when the phone arrived as it's been so well applied.
Anyway, took it off today and wow the screen is marvellous. Silky smooth finger print improved as well. Makes using the phone so much nicer. Take it off I say .

I wish I could, but I can't enjoy a device if I know that I'm going to scratch it. It seems that no matter how careful I am, I always get a big scratch in the screen if I don't use a screen protector.

I can't fathom why anyone would spend a fortune on a phone and not enjoy the full user experience created by the designers
This screen is just a joy.
I avoid putting my phone in a pocket with anything else else.
Modern gorilla glass is so good now so many owners haven't caught up, they keep these phones encased in massive cases

Screen protectors really do take away from the feel and design of the phone. How much of a difference did it make with the fingerprint sensor? I know you said it helped, but is it night and day? You may end up talking me into removing my protector.

I took mine off and I will tell you this anything that's going to scratch your screen is going to go through the pre-installed "screen protector" it is such a thin piece of plastic it's not funny.

It's not night and day, but definitely faster
Once the protector is of and you feel the screen for the first time you'll be hooked instantly

I go in and out of building sites for a job and dont even do that, although I have a slim Spiggen to protect against accidental drops (I'm pretty good catching phones on my foot )
I think many people haven't caught up with how fought the latest gorilla glass is

Hey bro, it has been a while crisscrossing the XDA boards. Hope all's well with you...
I definitely noticed the increased color vibrancy when I took off the stock screen protector. The improvement on the fingerprint scanner was quite noticeable in my case. With the stock protector, I was getting print recognition every 6 out of 10. With it off, it's pretty much recognized everyone unless I miss the spot.
Of course like many who would be paranoid about scratching the screen, I tried the Ringke Dual Easy and found it to be actually much better than the stock protector. The surface is slick to the touch and fingerprints were read just the same as the naked glass.
So yeah, in my case the stock protector did affect the accuracy of my FPS.
BTW, one of the best methods to increase read accuracy I found was to do a few scans with the lightest touch possible, essentially providing good image without too much deformity (that would be my guess), and will allow unlocking with a quick light touch.

So you're telling me that thin piece of plastic is stronger and more scratch resistant than Gorilla Glass 6?
Anything that is going to actually scratch the screen is going to go through the thin piece of plastic that is applied.
If somebody wants to leave it on that is their prerogative but it is not going to stop anything that will scratch Gorilla Glass 6.
The pre-installed screen protector is the exact same material that was on the back of the phone when it came out of the box.

No, not stronger, but it won't allow scratches get to your screen and once your protector starts to degrade you can get a new one for a few coins, broke the screen because you had cold hands and it slipped? £300.
Gorilla Glass 6 is just glass, it scratches like glass at the same exact hardness, don't make a big deal about it.

Ok first off the pre-installed "screen protector" is going to do NOTHING if you drop your phone. So if your hands are cold, your phone slips and the screen breaks it's going to happen with or without the pre-installed "screen protector". A tempered glass one might help in this situation but not the plastic film that ships on the phone.
Second, Gorilla Glass 6 does not scratch like standard glass. Glass on the Mohs hardness scale is 5-5.5 while Gorilla Glass 6 is 6.5, actually a big difference.
Now the pre-installed PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) "screen protector" has a Mohs hardness of 1, yes 1. So something with a Mohs hardness scale of 1 is protecting something that is 6.5 on the same scale? That makes ZERO sense. Any scratches you might end up seeing on it would not have scratched the actual screen.

It's always going to offer a degree of extra protection, it's stupid to deny that, they wrapped the whole phone in the same type of plastic to keep it pristine during shipping, environmental damage doesn't always limit to drops.

Mohs is used entirely for mineral hardness, it was never intended to applied on synthetic materials such as PET, the number 1 you gave is completely made up, if you used a Mohs' pick on it anyway it would scratch around level 3.
I suggest you to avoid using whatever you found in your 2 minutes Google/Quora search to debate this and throw me a "Science is your friend." your statements are completely unscientific and you clearly never had anything to do with this field, I don't get who you're trying to impress.

Plastic is a level one on the Mohs scale.
Get with the times modern-day smartphones screens do not scratch like they used to do your research and stop looking foolish.
And there is a difference between the hardness of standard glass and Gorilla Glass

Edit: Plastic is a level 3 you were correct on that. But even with that you have something of a level 3 protecting something that's a level 6.5. Again that makes no sense.
But the first minute of this video will tell you everything you need to know about your pre-installed screen protector.

I haven't noticed since I have an OtterBox Defender case and Whitestone Dome tempered glass screen protector. Same with my wife's P6P.
I don't think it scratches any more than other phones. I use a flip case without screen protector. I do have 2 or 3 miniscule scratches that are only visible under certain angles or lighting conditions. I would say that it all depends on how you protect and treat your phone.
Sand scratches all glass. Use a case and a screen protector. My 2.5 yo N10+ has no scratches or damage in spite of more then a few drops because it's always in a case with a screen protector. The case should have slightly raised guards on all sides of the display to help prevent contact on face plants.
A good case lessens high G loading that can damage internal components like BGA chipsets during an impact.
I've never used a screen protector, since the beginning of smartphones (Dell Streak 5). I keep my phone in a slim case, and it goes into a padded belt clip case (turtleback brand). My phone is used constanly, and I've never scratched one. But, I also don't go to the beach, or other functions that would allow dirt/rock/debris to get to the screen.
I know accidents can happen, but I try to treat my phones as the EXPENSIVE things they are.

I live the desert. Just for giggles I finally took the screen protector off my old S4+, it felt good.
Within 4 months in spite off being careful it had a couple scratches. One grain of sand is all it takes... and sand is found everywhere.
Any pocket grit can mar glass.
Your dry fingers are also abrasive to glass and will gradually wear it down over time.
No screen protector, never used them. Day one purchase and no scratches. I don't think it scratches any easier than any other phone.
6 month old P6P here and it is scratch free.
Somehow, I got a scratch on my screen. It's a small ding and it doesn't bother me, but it's there. I don't use screen protectors, don't like them.
No screen protector but got a case since day 1 in October. No visible scratches.
I noticed micro scratches within the first week - so I am using a screen protection for the first time in my life.

And, factually, it is true that the Pixel 6 Pro scratches quite easily, compared to previous models.
Now, why is that?
The reason is the so-called Gorilla Glass Victus. It's a new product by Corning - a product that is in use in a number of phones, including IPhones. And that's where the interesting part comes in. All Gorilla Glass Victus phones are more prone to (micro) scratches.
Meaning that the Pixel 6 Pro does scratch more easily compared to previous models, but so does any other flagship with Victus glass, currently.
You might ask yourself: Why did Corning release a product that is prone to get scratched more easily? Well, the answer is quite simple: Drop protection. Gorilla Glass Victus is harder to scratch on a deeper level and is much more resistant to drop damage, at least in theory, according to Corning.
In the end, you will be best advised to get a screen protector on. The Pixel 6 Pro is a good phone. I can't call it great, since battery life and reception could both be much better, but you will have a hard time to find a package this good (awesome camera, many software features, timely updates, good root support (Samsung hates root), decent hardware quality, good hardware values on paper) somewhere else. The Pixel 6 Pro is a phone that I can recommend, but it's still a phone that can improve in a number of areas, but so does any other phone.
Considering that the P6a is on the horizon, and it's usually a much better bang for the buck, you might be best advised though, to hold out and wait for that phone (as far as I know, the P6a will be revealed in May).

In my experience, yeah, it scratches really easily.
I've never used screen protectors before, and I baby my phones, but within the first two weeks I had multiple scratches on the screen to the point where I had to put on a screen protector just for my sanity. I'm seriously considering getting the screen replaced entirely because of it.

Same happened to me, I never used screen protectors in the past and I could go several months to a year with very minor scuffs. With the P6 I got a heavy scratch after 3 days.
If you're worried about scratches and want peace of mind just use a screen protector. Glass is glass and will always scratch under the right conditions no matter how much GG hypes it up.
I think the oleophobic coating could be better but scratches are not a problem for me. My release pixel was 4 months without a screen protector and it looked fine, same for my new device after 2 months.
Had mine since mid January, no screen protector...not one scratch. I use a turtleback case. I've never had a screen protector on any of my smartphones. Last phone I had with a protector, was one of those old PDA type phones.
My back glass is COVERED in scuffs and scratches. I'm glad I got the white model because you really do have to inspect it properly to see it
