So now I'm wondering if this could have been prevented simply by a case and not necessarily a screen protector as well. I've used cases such as an Otterbox Commuter in the past but never dropped any of those phones to the extent this one went down. It seems to me that any case with a slight lip on the front -- as most of them must have -- would be enough since the screen itself would not hit the ground.
From research on this forum and web sites I'm currently favoring the Spigen Thin Armor case but am wondering if a high-quality screen protector would also be worth it. My screen at the time it was damaged really had no scratches at all, so the Gorilla Glass was doing its job. Would one of those tempered glass protectors also provide shatter protection? Or would a decent case by itself be sufficient?

Even with a case on, if there was a small rock or a jagged edge on the ground that nicks the screen, it would have still been toast anyway. This is regardless of if there was a lip protecting it or not. It all depends on what's on the ground by chance.
A tempered glass protector probably could have saved the screen though, since you said it landed flat on its face. Tempered glass protectors are perfect for impacts that land face down, not so much on edges or sides. You will see most demonstrations of tempered glass done with nails, hammers, drop tests, etc. with the phone being impacted directly on the face. If it impacts from the side, there is a good chance the screen could still break as tempered glass isn't really designed to protect from those types of impacts.
That is where the case with a lip comes in. Those are meant to protect from side and edge impacts. Most drops generally don't land flat like yours, they tend to bounce around on corners first, so the case would absorb most of the impact and not the phone directly.
Your best bet is to both have a tempered glass screen protector (for flat impacts), and a bumper frame or TPU case (for the rest).
I use a Nillkin H+ Tempered Glass screen protector and a bumper frame (back not covered as I put a skin on the back) and I'm pretty much covered for most brain lapse moments.

Once you learn the hinge method for putting on screen protectors, you won't have air bubbles or dust underneath. You can't even tell my phone has a screen protector on it. Youtube has several videos on how to do it properly.
I refuse to pay big $$$ for glass protectors because you only get one of them, and you either do it right, or throw it away. With plastic protectors, you get several for a few dollars.

That's not true. I applied and removed my Nillkin more then 10 times during the application to get rid of the dust I missed trapped underneath because I suck at applying screen protectors. It reapplied the same every time. All you have to do is make sure you don't firmly press it down and you're fine. This is even after you see the adhesion process occur. It will still peel up. The adhesive takes a few hours to a day (depending on brand) to fully stick/cure.
If a person like me can apply one glass screen protector, anyone else will do it better. One is all you need.
Plastic will only give basic scratch protection and leave a greasy screen after a while. If it takes the same fall his did, the screen would still be done for.

And a plastic screen protector will do nothing, that protects against scratches like from sand. A glass one would be the best bet for shatter protection. I've seen a person take a hammer to a screen with a glass screen protector on. The protector was rekt but the phone screen was fine.

There are 2 that I would probably recommend. I'm currently using a transparent bumper case off of ebay. I did a review here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/lucency-transparent-bumper-case-review-t2690108. It is $2.88 shipped. If you do choose this one, I would stick to black. After using them for a while now, the various colours tend to stain easily, but the black doesn't. It is just for light drop protection, but since the main body is a harder plastic, it won't absorb a higher drop like a softer bumper frame, or a TPU case would. I personally like it because it is transparent and you can still see the sides of the phone and the skin through it.
The other is the replica Nexus 4 bumper, for the Nexus 5. Mine is still in the mail so I haven't tried it out yet, but others have bought it and it seems to have gotten pretty good reviews overall. http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/replica-official-nexus-4-bumper-nexus-5-t2698422. There are many choices for thicker protection cases. Properly applied screen protectors don't have any bubbles.

Zagg HTC One High Def Screen Protector - Amazon
I think Zagg makes the best screen protectors, I have used them on both the HTC Droid Incredible and the HTC One. The Zagg screen protectors are not the cheapest option for screen protectors especially if you go for the ultra clear model but I think the cost is worth it, especially since zagg offers warranty replacements, you only pay for shipping. With the warranty replacements, registering your product on the Zagg website is quick and easy, there are no serial numbers you need to have or anything, you only need to tell them what device you got it for and which model screen protector you got.
Another benefit of the zagg shields is the lifetime of the screen protector, in my experience the screen protectors lasted almost 2 years for my Droid Incredible before I replaced it, the screen protector started to come off around the edges of my phone. While the screen protectors do age, I would much prefer the aged screen protector opposed to any damage to my screen. In my entire life of my Droid Incredible, bought in April 2010 and still used as an e-reader by my girlfriend today, there is not one scratch on the screen thanks to the Zagg shield.
While I have not personally tried the Verizon 3 pack of screen protectors, I have had friends use them and they were disappointed with the quality of them, the biggest issue was having the screen protector stay on.
Zagg screen protectors have done such a great job in my opinion I have not wanted or even thought of trying another brand.
As for tips to putting the Zagg brand on, make sure you wash your hands before you do anything, clean the screen so their is no oil, fingerprints, dust or anything else on the phone, make sure the spray gets on both the screen protector and the screen but do not soak either, just enough spray to cover the phone and protector. I found it best when applying the screen protector to start at the top of the screen in one of the corners and work your way to the opposite top corner then work your way down, make sure to use the applying tool they put in the packaging, be sure to use a good amount of force when use the tool but be careful not to apply too much pressure and crack the screen.
If you do not want to try putting the screen protector on yourself, you can go to the Cell Phone employees at Best Buy and have them put the screen protector on. You do not need to purchase the protector from Best Buy, but they charge you a fee to do it. The major benefit of this is that if they screw up and ruin your protector they will replace it.
I tried the Verizon 3-pack when initially purchasing the one. While they are decent, I knew I wanted something a little more rugged.
I did some research and ended up settling on the Mime USA Feather lite tempered glass screen protector. It's super thin and flexes nicely when unboxed, so it's highly unlikely to actually shatter like other tempered glass protectors. It's extremely scratch resistent. I tested car keys, nails, and knives on the screen protector after applying it to the phone and absolutely no marks showed up. It fits perfectly to the parameters of the screen and is hardly noticable after application. I would highly recommend this product. I ordered it from the Mime USA website for about $28, they even threw in a code for free shipping!

I usually don't use screen protectors and whenever I put on a case, I take it off an hour later. I've had the phone for like 9 months now and the screen is fine. There are tiny little scratches but you can't notice them unless you try really hard to, they don't affect the clarity of the screen in any way. I just don't like using screen protectors because they attract finger prints and smudges so easily even when I try a more expensinve screen protector. Honestly the screen will be fine for a long time. Yes there will be extremely tiny scratches but you won't care because they're almost non-existant. But one thing to keep in mind though, is that sand is crazy harsh on the screens, so I'm extra careful when I go to the beach with my phone. That's when I suggest putting on a case and a screen protector. Because even if a tiny bit of sand getes in your pocket, it might cause a little damage. Right now my phone is brand new since I got it replaced because of a camera issue, and I just can't get myself to stick with putting on a case or screen protector, I had a screen protector on it but I took it off 2 weeks later because I miss the naked screen.

Reviews go with what you said. I think when I buy my next screen protector when my zagg wears down, I'm going to try one of these.
i'm using an invisible shield screen protector. Went on pretty easy, there were no bubbles, and it's pretty thick. I've only had it on for a week, so I can't say much about durability, but it's pretty good as far as a screen protector goes. I'm still very partial to those matte finish screen protectors, so i'll probably be picking up one of those in the future.

Got a MIME Feather myself about a month ago or so now, and I must say that it's the best choice I've ever made as far as screen protection. I'd had a Spigen and some other tempered glass brand, but they were both just too thick and noticeable on the screen. The Feather is perfect because it's hard to even tell it's on there, plus it has the Oleophobic coating to prevent smudges and fingerprints. Seriously, don't even waste your money on another screen protector. You can't beat the MIME Feather.

+1 what he said, minus the experience with Spigen. The MIME Feather is the first glass screen protector I've tried, and I don't think I'll ever use anything else. It's superb and well worth the premium price. With that on the screen and a Ballistic Shell Gel case on the rest of the phone, I don't worry about it too much.
I got a EBay $6.99, Chinese made, 0.4mm thick tempered glass screen protector a few weeks ago.
Went on really well, no bubbles and sticking down along all edges and corners. Has the beveled edges on the glass so no sharp edges.
Far better than ANY plastic one i have used on any phone. Touchscreen works well with it on.
Actually hard to notice now its on unless you run your finger from the speaker onto the screen , so the REALLY thin ones must be pretty close to invisible.
I polish up the screen every 2-3 days. Does get prints on it, so maybe the expensive ones have a better oleophobic coating??

Its definitely putting another layer of glass on the screen. You have to be careful and get it in the right position 1st time as they dont move around once stuck down. Removing them without breaking is, i suspect, very difficult. The "tape hinge" method of application works pretty well.
I have found the touch sensitivity on mine to be great. Certainly there is no difference to the "usability" of the phone, and the smoothness an feel is as good as the original screen.
I did read one review where the buttons on screen wouldn't work with a glass screen protector, but that has certainly NOT been my experience. From what i have read the thickness of these has come down from around 0.6mm in early incarnations to something like 0.15mm and being flexible in some brands.
I got a 0.4mm one. No scratches as yet. Its supposed to be very hard (9H??). I had no issues with fitting my case on after installing the screen protector.. Its a cheap silicone and hardback model that provides good corner protection. Hopefully the screen protector will help if it falls on its face sometime.

Just bought my first one a month ago (MIME Ghost), best screen protector I have ever used. It's definitely scratch resistant and feels like the original screen. Not sure how it will hold up to drops, but that's not something I am willing to test.
Had a friend buy some Write Guard screen protectors for his HTC One. I installed one on his HTC One. Screen protector was all ready getting all kinds of scratches in it. No Bueno.
I used the XtremeGuard screen protector for a very long time on my HTC One, but recently I decided I wanted a matte finish screen protector, so I switched to Tech Armor Anti-Glare. Feels much nicer to me and gets a lot less fingerprints and smudges.
I was using the protector that came with the UG case. After reading this thread, I picked up a MIME. Very impressed. It goes on dry, was easy to remove and reposition and left absolutly no bubles (these drive me CRAZY). It has somewhat finger print resistant and I did not heave to deal with wetting the protector, then waiting 24 hours to see if all the bubles went away. Best screen protector I have purchased and believe me, I have tried at least 20 different types over the years.
I have had no issues with the touch sensitivity. You can't even notice it's on unless you look really closely at the top edge.
Using the screen protector that came with my otterbox comuter and it is quite terrible.
The screen protector has been on since April and it is already deteriorating. The spots where I'd swype, type show heavy signs of use. With a faint finger swipe over the screen you can actually feel the difference.
Other than that, the actual performance isn't the worst. Glare and all in the sun is bad, indoors though I don't have any issues.
Will look into MIME.

Naturally I want to add some protection to it especially since I will likely be going sans-case (at least for use, though I've ordered a leather/wool felt sleeve for it to take refuge in while not in the protection of my hands, which will work well with my Pebble as I don't need to constantly check the phone for notifications). A friend of mine that I talked into impulse buying the N5 ordered the Mime Feather Glass protector after his research. Looking through the threads I could find it looks like a lot of people have had issues with chipping edges on that model, and it sounds like a slew of other issues from other manufacturers like Spigen, and I don't like the extra cutouts on the Nillkin protector (just seems like an extra space for dust to collect and takes away from the sleekness a bit IMO). Anyway it looked like most of those posts originated closer to the launch time of the N5 so I'm wondering if any glass protectors have stood out for quality above the rest over the past couple months?
I know the tempered glass protectors are more expensive, but the feel, look, scratch resistance, and apparently debatable shatter protection of the underlying screen seem to be the best option. I saw the post about the Rhino Shield but the much lower scratch resistance and similar price coupled with the article claiming a ziploc bag offered similar protection deterred me slightly :silly:

The Mime feather is my first experience with extremely thin glass protectors. My experience at first was great, but it is starting to fall apart and I'm regretting my purchase. It started with the corners for some reason even though I have the heavy duty ballistic case on the phone. Now I'm getting whole cracks from one side to the other... Not even originating from the corners where it started. I am clueless as to how it happens because I have never dropped my phone.
If you're going to get a glass protector I strongly encourage you to get the non-thin versions. It's not a whole lot thicker and it is less likely to be brittle. I have used several normal thickness glass protectors in the past (Spigen) and was never disappointed in those. So far my experience with MIME is poor, but Spigen has been excellent and that includes their cases.
Thanks. I was tempted buy Iloome's flex glass cause it's on sale right now for $17 but I was thinking the thicker protector might be the way to go.

I have been using it for 2 weeks. No peeling/chipping issues since it is a bit thicker compared to feather. When I applied it on the phone, I got a very small bubble near the upper left corner. It disappeared after a day. Please read reviews from other mime ghost owners to get a fair idea. I remember seeing a separate thread for mime in the n5 forum.
I've got the spigen glass nano.tr slim (the one with rounded corners) coming the mail. Any tips on applying it? I REALLY get OCD (ADHD) if there's ANY dust or bubbles under the screen, so I have to do it perfectly, since it costs nearly £30.
Any advice on how to do it flawlessly?
I read somewhere about running the shower on hot for 30 mins, then doing it in the bathroom, because the hot air causes the dust to all fall to the ground and isn't flying around - but won't that cause condensation etc to build up on the screen in the seconds before you apply the protector?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I got the xgear glass for nexus 4 and it was great. It save me phone, I drop it on is screen and nothing happens only the tempered glass was broken.

Regarding the hinge method, make sure when you close the hinge it falls smack dab center. No having to pull it to slightly center it, etc. The tape itself has some bit of tension so it will pull the screen protector back. I'm like 0.2mm off center and I'm very annoyed. So maybe when you tape the screen protector down, start slightly to the left (assuming you tape the right).
Also if you have access to a clean room, do it there. I regret doing it at home and not staying late at work to use the CDA and cleanroom to properly dust off my screen. A stupid eyelash fell off in the middle of the procedure and I have a freaking eyelash underneath my screen protector. LOL. Good thing it's at the bezel though.
The most effective method imo is the steamed washroom method which gives you lots of chances to get it right and you'll never get any dust or any other particles on your screen.
The cruzerlite glass screen protector is amazing. I need to write up a review on it now and take some pics as I've had it over a week. It honestly feels better than the real n5 screen.

I have the Mime Feather Glass and it works great. I did have to shave the corners of my Ringke case to prevent the screen protector from peeling up on the edges. See post #30 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540471
On a side note., the screen protector did crack, from something I did, and Mime sent me a coupon for 50% off a new one.

I have a Nillkin protector, looks and feels great. Just wondering how a tempered glass protector fares against drops compared to those shatter proof polyurethane (non glass) screen protectors like Rhino Shield and Zagg Extreme. I know Tempered glass protectors can shatter but those others won't, I’m not worried about that, I’m more concerned about the level of protection they offer. Are glass protectors as good as those other ones at dispersing and dampening impact forces? I've seen a couple of videos on Rhino Shield and they look amazing.
I received the first gen of Spigen's SLIM.t screen protectors in mid-November and have been using it since. Initially, the product was great albeit it still attracted fingerprints. I was highly satisfied and the tempered glass looked and felt amazing (plus I managed to avoid any of the bubbles the majority of early buyers experienced).
But a month after normal use (I don't use a case either, but I'm very careful with my phone) it started chipping on the edges. I never dropped my phone or do anything that would cause damage, but magically out of no where the screen protector started chipping.
Currently today, I have 6 chips around my screen protector (2 at the top, 1 on the right, 3 on the left), and two clear cracks across my phone as well (both stemming from separate chips on the side). I'm not sure how the SPIM.tR Nano performs, but I can tell you that paying over $30 for a screen protector that chips this easily is not a worthwhile investment. Something to be aware of.
Zagg HD shield has no problems

I want to use my phone without any case. I'm not afraid of scratches, but I'm afraid of screen cracking if I drop my phone. So my question is: if I use tempered glass, will it protect my screen from cracking? Or they will both be cracked? And I also want that glass is the thinnest. So I was thinking about getting 0.15 mm tempered glass. Is it different from 0.3mm or 0.4mm in term of protection, or does only the hardness matter?

I've dropped mine many many times onto wood and concrete without a screen protector. The phone is a little chipped and scratched, but the screen is absolutely fine.
A nilkin tempered glass screen protector is a good investment as it feels brilliant although when I dropped mine with that on it smashed the corner of the protector.
The edges of the phone are slightly raised so without the screen protector on, a drop onto a flat surface will not damage the screen but will damage the screen protector.
A drop onto a raised surface like a stone would probably break the screen protector but don't know if it'd also damage the screen.
Question is, how often do you drop your phone, and how much do you want to spend on glass protectors?

I was thinking about Nillkin, but I think it would be too thick. So I'm considering those 0.15 mm protectors in this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc...5mm-dot-view-friendly-tempered-glass-t2810825
I also thought about xtremeguard, since I use their normal protectors and they are great. It 50$, but with 85% off coupon it's just a few bucks. Only problem is that it's 0.4mm.
Which one would you recommend? I'm planning to spend 10-15$, because 40-50$ is really to much for a protector, in my opinion.

If your looking for it, but after putting on, I haven't paid much attention to it. I dropped my phone once, chipped away at the edges of the shield. The seller replaced it free. I like tempered glass, it is the only screen proctor I will put on my phones. The only bad thing is that it goes edge to edge with the glass. So if you have a case that touches the screen, that might cause a problem. I use a thin clear cars I got off ebay. Works for me.

The only annoying thing could be top edge, when I pull down notification bar.
Case wouldn't be a problem, because I'm planning to use phone without case, and that why I'm looking for a tempered glass, to protect screen from cracking.

Actually then it could be a benefit, because going edge to edge means you will probably not touch the edge. And the edge is not sharp, nice and smooth. The price is cheap enough to try it. I have tried several over the last few months, mostly from China. But this is US born and works and feels great.

I wanted to start thinking on how to protect my OnePlus One but still be able to store it inside of my pockets.
I usually wear standard 550 Levis so the pockets are pretty OK. Still I perfer a thin case.
Besides a thin case, a screen protector is a must. Ive used Best Skins Ever and ZAGG InvisibleShield and personally I perfer Best Skins Ever because its cheaper and it protects even better.
I do see that nowadays a lot of people are using tempered glass. What difference is there?
On cases, I liked the TUDIA Ultra Tough OMNIX hybrid case but, after I cannot find it in Europe, I see it might be too thick. My previous phone was 14.1 mm and I do not mind at all a thick phone (perfer it actually). How thick is the TUDIA?
On tempered glass, I have no idea as I have no experience.

For case you want Diztronic case. For screen protector i don't recommend tempered glass. I had 3 in this phone and each time i dropped the phone they break. These are minimal drop that have caused no damage to the rest of the phone. They look nice once installed but 9% of the time are one hit protect in case of serious drop. Problem is any drop will break them. After spending $30 i gave up. You dont need screen protector for phone these days. Just make sure the case has a lump.
I agree.. Diztronic is the way to go for a case. I have the ultra tpu and couldn't be happier.. I do use a nillkin glass screen protector because i do keep my phone in my pocket and want to protect the phone screen from things scratching it.. I'd Rather the protector get scratched than the screen itself..
Tempered Glass
I'm a big fan of the tempered glass protectors, I've had a spartan shield glass one on mine for the past 5 months. Dropped it face down from ~5 feet onto concrete not a scratch, then down a concrete stairwell and only received minor scratches to the protector and nothing on the screen itself.
It is not necessary to use a protector, it will make the phone heavier
I use a orzly scrren protector tempered glass
Fit it while the sun is shining on the display (you can see more dust)
and wipe the dust off with all four fingers (bare fingers)
My provided dist cloth just made the dust stick to the cloth, then screen and back and forth
and when peeling the adhesive off the screen protector hold it flat, mid air above the device, with the top side facing up, and the adhesive facing the phone, NEVER turn the protector so that the front of the protector faces downwards. and apply.
It looks perfect, Feels REALLY smooth, and definatley protects it (I had to get two as i messed the first one up, so i put the old protector on an old phone (was too big but the phone was broken anyway)
I dropped it on concrete. Glass shattered a lot, phone was fine.
One thing about these screen protectors is that if you do get a little dust under it DO NOT TAKE ANY TEMPERED GLASS BACK OFF. you cant peel it back, remove dust and reply. IT MESSES IT UP. The adhesive seperates from the protective glass and they never go back together.

I have this setup as well, except I have a Ringke fusion case and a Niliken glass screen protector. can't tell it's there, have dropped my phone at least 4 times and neither the phone or the glass screen protector has come out of it with a scratch.
You DO need a tempered glass protector
I keep my OPO in my pocket with the Diztronic TPU case and a tempered glass protector (about US$7 on eBay, search for item number 311029665158). One day I forgot that my keys were in my pocket. The tempered glass protector got a scratch, but the screen is fine.
Yesterday my phone fell 3.3m (4 feet) face down onto a brick floor, in the Diztronic case. The tempered glass protector got chipped and cracked, but again, the screen is fine.
I wasn't planning for the phone to fall —*no one ever plans accidents. Be prepared. (I have no connection to Diztronic or the seller of the tempered glass screen protector.)
One nasty detail: In my pocket the OPO gets warm and the touchscreen fails for at least 10 minutes after taking it out of my pocket.
I use a RInkge Fusion clear case, Niliken glass screen protector. I was running for the train and my phone shot out of my pocket and landed face-down on the tiled floor. I panicked, picked it up, but didn't get to look at it until I was on the train. No damage. None, absolutely fine. No crack in the screen protector, no breaking of the case. Absolutely fine. Fall distance, about 3.5 feet. And, it slid about 2 feet after I accidentally kicked it.
I carry my device in my front pocket every day. Never an issue.

I use the tempered glass protector and flip-case which are sold on the OPO site. IMHO the flip-case offers great protection for in and out pocket, as the screen is completely covered. No worries about what's in my pockets along with the phone....and when its open, the tempered glass is protecting it! Also the flip- case does not add much bulk at all...very thin!
The case is mostly just rubber padding. Not really that much protection.
The glass protector is UGLY but I feel that it would get the some done Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have a pixel XL screen protector on my A7. I cut it to fit the A7.

I've had the same experience. I didn't use a screen protector for a period of maybe, 3 weeks? And noticed the micro scratches also when viewing the device at extreme angles. [near 180 obtuse angles? Or near 0 degree acute angles respective to the plane of the phone? Sorry math people.]
One of the few things about the phone that make me a little disappointed with ZTE.
Since then, I've been using a liquid screen protector and it works well.. I've dropped my phone once. From about 4-5 feet up onto concrete with no damage to screen but a metal flake on the upper and lower housing.
I would recommend using something.. Anything, as some protection is better than no protection. Be it from micro scratches, hairline cracks, or complete screen destruction.

The problem is Gorilla Glass 4… It's more prone to tiny scratches than Gorilla Glass 3. But don't most smartphones, including the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy line use GG4 as well?
No screen protector here as I couldn't find one, and luckily I have no scratches at all. The screen seems incredibly resistant!

That's the reason I've always uesd tempered glass - micro scratches! To all the people thinking it's because of keys or coins, etc. in your pocket- it's not, as most keys and coins are usually softer metal that can't scratch Gorila Glass (that's how they're able to make keys for you from blanks).
It's little particles of sand that can end up with the rest of your pocket lint that's believed to be the cause of microscratches. Sand is usually silica which is 6-7 on MOH's scale for hardness which is above what any of the Gorilla Glass 1-5 has been rated to protect.
I'm now on my second Axon 7, due to a cracked screen. I was using an aftermarket flexible protector. Looking for a tempered glass option for the replacement phone.
On the upside, ZTE does at least include accidental damage coverage in the warranty. It's still $80 for accidental damage, but that's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new phone or getting the screen repaired.

Which aftermarket flexible protector? How did it get cracked, and which case were you using, if any?
In my opinion, the case is the most important element of protection from cracking in case of drops, unless the screen hits something sharp, like a rock or the corner of something —*that's when you need tempered glass.

Good point. I wasn't using any kind of case, and it likely would have helped in my scenario. The protector was a DeltaShield BodyArmor Full Coverage Screen Protector. I dropped the phone on to my concrete porch. I think it hit flat face down on the concrete.
I have 2 different cases on order: a Spigen Rugged Armor case and a CoverON Hard Slim Hybrid Kickstand case. We'll see which one I like better.
