Is the screen scratch resistant? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys.
I have been wondering if the screen of our phone is scratch resistant like gorilla glass.
I read that has a obleotobic (blablavla) coating and thats for the fingerprints.
But is it scratch resistant?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

No, it's not like Gorilla Glass and will scratch if you're not careful. A nice XO screen protector might help.

Ok. Thanks for the info

It actually IS hardened glass. Maybe not Gorilla Glass, but resistant against usual daily-life dangers like keys.

My phone has been all naked for 8 months and not a mark anywhere. Just be very careful and you'll be fine.

even if the phone has gorilla glass, it can scratch...

Yes. I had it in the same pocket with my keys often. (And before replacement I got curious, and scratched it with a knife. xDD No damage, but I didn't scratch hard.)

I believe a screen protector will have more harm once your remove it from screen and it's not required if you take a little care.

I have gotten a couple of scratches on my gnex, and i have been really careful.... Seems like they appeared from nowhere and i haven't got a clue where I get t them from.....

exactly same for me. I care a lot but it was all for nothing because i find two long micro scratches on screen...screen protector is on the way

It's usually sand that would leave light scratches on the screen. My Nexus S had a lot of light scratches on it, but it could be a different type of glass.

Well I don't think sand can EASILY scratch your phone.
Lemme tell you why. The other day I went to the beach with my Galaxy Nexi(my mom had one too) and when I went in the water, I got sand in my pockets. So I went home and the next day I went to my pool with the same swim wear I went to the beach with.
I put my phone in my pocket(no screen protector at the time) and when I took my phone out, I remembered there was sand in my pocket. I carefully pulled it out.
And I was so happy. I only got sand between the plastic and the display (they all fell out by the end of the day) and I got no scratches. And lemme tell you, I had a lot of sand in my pocket.
So I wouldn't say sand can scratch the screen easily.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^

Had the phone for almost 9 months now. No screen protector. Always carry it in my pocket. Dropped it two times on hard wooden floor. Not a scratch on it yet.

two micro scratches on mine and I baby my phone..
doesn'tbother me too much since with the screen on you can't see them but definitely one of the easier to scratch phones I've had yet

My watch which uses Gorilla Glass has more visible scratches than my Nexus. I think there's a couple veeery faint ones on the Nexus, but nothing visible unless you reeeeally look for it. My watch on the other hand you don't have to look as hard, although still not deep enough to be visible when the screen is on. Then again I've had my watch for a couple more months than the Nexus..

watch the second video
mine is scratched
day 3 and i seen scratches on my nexus galaxy. I have never dropped it or put it face down. I have only put it in my pocket of my jeans and down jacket with nothing else inside. Why is mine so easily scratched? I own a Galaxy S Vibrant and used it for well over a year with no protection and have no scratches...
the glass isnt getting scratched, its the coating on the glass getting scratched. i dont think the vibrant had the coating...
Got scratches also on the second day. N1 didn't got any in two years.

Random thought... The iPhone has a "scratch proof oleophobic coating." Now if the coating is in fact what is getting scratched (I have been pretty lucky here and have no scratches) then how difficult would it be to:
A.) Re-coat the screen or patch it.
B.) Remove it altogether.

Have you tried googling "iPhone 4 coating wearing off"? It's far from scratchproof...

I was not literally saying it was scratch proof. The wording (like most things Apple) was only what i was referring to. However, in all honesty i have not done that or looked for their screen tests. Edited my previous post.

I´ve read somwhere that Samsung uses dragontail glas for the SGW. It has to be better than gorillaglas, but since Samsung was sceptical about this when they launched the SGW, they didn´t mention it.
Mine is scratched so no doubt it isn't.

Even Gorilla glass gets scratched and even shatters!! The scratch resistance just means it wont get scratched as easily as ordinary plastic or glass.I know our device uses a kind of scratch resistant material because it took about 3 months to notice a very fine scratch on mine.No Screen protector!!The scratch is almost invisible even now.
Sent from my Wonder
I did scratch my Wonder's screen somehow
Is there any way to find out what is the glass material? such as confirm with the samsung manufacturer?
I use SGW for 4 months without any screen protector and so far the glass hasn't any scratch.
I was expecting 1 or 2 replies to nothing at all but then im very thankful to all you guys who replied.
Long Live Our SGW!!!
I love You Guys.
Well, it's made of glass. So it's definitely more scratch resistant than plastic. But there isn't any reinforcement afaik.
I didn't knew it when I bought mine, so I bought an screen protector too. The week that I used it without protection I got any scratches. Now I'm using the protection for 3 weeks, and it's all scratched.

That's awkward, I can't get what you mean.
I bought mine 3 months ago and immediately put a screen protector on it. last January, I saw a video of a guy scratching (more like caressing) his GW with a pointed-edge scissor and there was no scratch (I was a fool to believe that video.) So I took off the screen protector after that. I'm always careful when it comes to my phone, and the only place where I put it most of the time is my pocket when I go out. I dunno where I got it, but I was surprised when I saw a tiny spec in the middle of the screen that won't come off. I tried to wipe it out but it still won't come off. I looked very closely and there it was, one tiny little scratch right in the middle of my screen. Bottom line is, NOT GORILLA GLASS! It was a good thing that the scratch was so small, it's unnoticeable when I put a screen protector back on.
Before I buy me GW I ask Samsung about glasses on Xcover and W.
The answer was
Xcover have hardened Gorilla glass
W there is used other hardened glass
I hear something about Dragontrail from Asahi glass or Samsung working on own solution...

Tiny sctatch on screen, need help!

I dropped my phone and then noticed the tiniest, thinnest scratch on the screen. I can't feel it when I touch the screen, and can only really see it when the light shines on it. I know it's not a big deal, but it's going to slowly drive me crazy. Anything I can do to get rid of it, or reduce it even more? I have hope since it's so tiny. Thanks.

Lol. Not many of us have experience rubbing our screens with cream. Be the guinea pig or man up and buy a screen and screen protector. Matter of fact, just buy a screen protector and be done with it. Ocd is underrated. Or overrated. Depending on how you look at it.

Most of the wet screen protector will fill the scratch.

Get a screen protector or a new screen. It's a bit late now to be worried about scratches on your screen, should've gotten a screen protector.
But, we live and we learn.
I have a nice little scratch on mine too. These things are going to happen. It's just a phone!!! Put a screen protector on it and be done with it!
The wet screens will fill in the tiny scratches nicely. The dry apply ones won't.
the XO screen protector seems to be very popular, might be a good choice.
Get an XO Skin and put it on your screen. It filled both a scratch and a scrape on my Gnex, when I thought I'd have to live with the damage.
Get some ocd pills and use a screen protector

Brasso.
Makes your screen crystal clear.
It's been mentioned allready, but the wet apply screen protectors really do work for "hiding" the scratch.
I had a scratch on my droid charge and I actually did try a paste I got from autozone to try and remove the scratch, well... it didn't work. It didn't add to the problem but it didn't remove it either.
So I applied a wet screen protector from skinz I believe, then I couldn't find the scratch no matter how I tried. It was successful in healing my ocd.

Annd there goes the oleophobic coating.
I confirm that XO wet apply covered a scratch on my gnexus display.
It probabely only works for scratches on the coating though, not for deep scratches on the glass.

The coating is what I'm sure got scratched. If I run my finger over it I can't feel it. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Looking into the XO screen protector.

Well, finally managed to scratch my Fantom today.

It took a while, but it finally happened. Was it a nasty drop? Sand in the pocket? An angry woodpecker? No.
It was...
The bottom of a ceramic coffee mug. I was actually just trying to see if it would scratch it and -- I'll be damned -- it did. Not terribly, but there are a few small, circular scratches in the one spot. Curiosity = satisfied.
So let this be a lesson, kids: don't rest your coffee on your Gnex, even with a Fantom tempered glass screen protector on it

Yeah. Admittedly, I haven't taken the screen protector off to find out for sure, but I don't think my coffee cup managed to cut through a piece of tempered glass and scratch the original layer of glass beneath it. I could be wrong, but still. Either way, the scratches aren't to terrible as far as disruption the usage of my phone. Usually I don't notice the scratches. I'll probably replace this protector once I find another that has a good, glass feel to it. If anyone has any recommendations, please do let me know.
wow those scratches are horrible, I wouldn't be able to stand it heh.

Does the Galaxy Nexus screen scratch without a protector

Hi. I looked for previous threads but wasn't able to find any...so sorry if this is a duplicate.
I saw on the web that various opinions were around on whether the Gnex needs a screen protector. I watched the key test as well on YouTube. Can anyone confirm if this screen is good enough to not require a protector?
Thanks all.

Obviously not scratch proof. No gorilla glass. Yes to the arguably "reinforced" glass. As long as you don't put your phone in with keys, coins, etc...you should be fine. I don't use a screen protector or case on mine and so far I only have a few nicks from light drops.

Watch out for sand, I'm pretty sure that's what scratched mine
There is no scratch proof glass on phones. Even Gorilla Glass scratches against things like sand.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Well gorilla glass is not much more than Cornings branded version of the hardened glass found on any phone including the GN. It is as resistant as any phone, but as it's still glass, it's likely that it will scratch. Personally mine has a bunch of tiny scratches(had it since launch). I bet they are caused by sand, and they are no better or worse than my previous phone with gorilla glass.
Whether you need a screen-protector is a question of whether you will be more annoyed by the protector or the tiny scratches. But it is likely that you will get tiny scratches.
My experience:
Galaxy Skyrocket with Gorilla glass: 1 1/2 years without a single scratch.
Galaxy Nexus: scratched in the first month.
Get a screen protector. These screens are pretty soft. It will easily scratch just from being in your pocket.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I've had mine for about 15 months, and I try to be careful with the phone. But try as I may, things happen. My glass is still crystal clear and free of any visible scratches, but there are multiple spots on the bezel around the glass that are scratched and pitted. I don't use any screen protectors or a case.

no it wont. just being in your pocket will NOT scratch the screen. however, if you have some sand in there or something harder than glass, it will scratch it.
i have had my phone for 14 months now, NEVER had a screen protector on it. and i JUST got my first scratch and i believe it was from a grain of sand on my thumb. i spend a LOT of time at the beach in Feb and March (live in Florida ) and its my only guess as to how it happened.
if you are careful, you should be OK without one....but getting one is probably a good idea if you are around sand a lot.
Yes it scratches
- wore out your welcome
Got mine at launch, no screen protector and no major scratches. There are a couple MINOR ones but nothing that can bee seen without careful inspection. I don't abuse the phone but I also don't baby it. I have used a holster and had it in my pocket. Go naked you will be fine if you don't abuse it.

The misconception is what exactly a "scratch" is. A layer of glass is actually removed and cannot be "fixed". Anything will scratch if rubbed against an abrasive with a greater hardness.

Agreed. My comment was just to reinforce the fact that unlike popular belief, gorilla glass is not at all scratch resistant but rather shatterproof. Not so much as an entire "layer".
