Well, finally managed to scratch my Fantom today. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It took a while, but it finally happened. Was it a nasty drop? Sand in the pocket? An angry woodpecker? No.
It was...
The bottom of a ceramic coffee mug. I was actually just trying to see if it would scratch it and -- I'll be damned -- it did. Not terribly, but there are a few small, circular scratches in the one spot. Curiosity = satisfied.
So let this be a lesson, kids: don't rest your coffee on your Gnex, even with a Fantom tempered glass screen protector on it

It is unbelievably difficult to get a decent shot of the scratches. This is the best I could do.

Yeah. Admittedly, I haven't taken the screen protector off to find out for sure, but I don't think my coffee cup managed to cut through a piece of tempered glass and scratch the original layer of glass beneath it. I could be wrong, but still. Either way, the scratches aren't to terrible as far as disruption the usage of my phone. Usually I don't notice the scratches. I'll probably replace this protector once I find another that has a good, glass feel to it. If anyone has any recommendations, please do let me know.

wow those scratches are horrible, I wouldn't be able to stand it heh.

[Q] Scratched screen already!

O.k. I don't know how it happened as I keep my phone in my pocket without keys or sand. Within about 4 days the screen was scratched bad. I have the 14 day return period and am thinking about trying to get it replaced but I don't know if they will let me know. I'm pissed because my original Vibrant lasted me 1.5 years naked and never scratched. Are they using softer glass? Who knows for sure. Anyone know if I can return it? They are also now stating that it's an automatic $50 restocking fee no matter what (unless it's malfunctioning). I'm bummed and have to decide tonight as to what to do. Any suggestions?
This is quite surprising. I thought they are using the best unbreakable glass called "Gorilla Glass"...
I don't have scratches yet but there's a light purple layer that I can see has been "smeared off" and it bugs the he'll out of me :-(

That sucks.. Sorry to hear. I kept the gay screen cover that was on the phone when I bought it for like a week before I got my dry zagg screen protector
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Gorilla glass can be scratched. Just to let you know it isn't full proof. Fortunately can be fixed with machine glaze and a micro fiber cloth or you can just use a screen protector in the first place.
Naked on the vibrant since release and ive been naked on the SGS II since release. I did break a vibrant screen by sitting on it but never any scratches.
Why taking a chance with such a huge and beautiful screen.... just proctect it!!, here is a guy I got mine from they are excellent screen protector for $3.65 you can get six of them shipped, I got mine and I couldn't believe the great quality, you can highly see them and literally you can't feel them on the screen... I totally love them!!
that's why i always always always use a screen protector regardless of what type of unbreakable glass it's using
No restocking fee for same device within grace period

Restocking only if returning which is bs.

+1 Same here, I wouldn't be able to handle a scratch on my screen. A screen protector can always be removed and replaced.
Hercules Hercules!!
Thanks for the input guys. I went in and got it exchanged. I guess I'll need to protect this one. I'm surprised that it's so vulnerable compared to my Vibrant. With my Vibrant, I carried that thing with my keys, coins, thumbtacks, diamonds, sand, metal daggers, you name it, and I did so with no protection. Not one scratch at all! Just be warned, even though it's Gorilla Glass, it's very easily scratched, so protect this one! I'm not liking the idea of putting a cover over the beautiful screen. Oh well...

Tiny sctatch on screen, need help!

I dropped my phone and then noticed the tiniest, thinnest scratch on the screen. I can't feel it when I touch the screen, and can only really see it when the light shines on it. I know it's not a big deal, but it's going to slowly drive me crazy. Anything I can do to get rid of it, or reduce it even more? I have hope since it's so tiny. Thanks.

Lol. Not many of us have experience rubbing our screens with cream. Be the guinea pig or man up and buy a screen and screen protector. Matter of fact, just buy a screen protector and be done with it. Ocd is underrated. Or overrated. Depending on how you look at it.

Most of the wet screen protector will fill the scratch.

Get a screen protector or a new screen. It's a bit late now to be worried about scratches on your screen, should've gotten a screen protector.
But, we live and we learn.
I have a nice little scratch on mine too. These things are going to happen. It's just a phone!!! Put a screen protector on it and be done with it!
The wet screens will fill in the tiny scratches nicely. The dry apply ones won't.
the XO screen protector seems to be very popular, might be a good choice.
Get an XO Skin and put it on your screen. It filled both a scratch and a scrape on my Gnex, when I thought I'd have to live with the damage.
Get some ocd pills and use a screen protector

Brasso.
Makes your screen crystal clear.
It's been mentioned allready, but the wet apply screen protectors really do work for "hiding" the scratch.
I had a scratch on my droid charge and I actually did try a paste I got from autozone to try and remove the scratch, well... it didn't work. It didn't add to the problem but it didn't remove it either.
So I applied a wet screen protector from skinz I believe, then I couldn't find the scratch no matter how I tried. It was successful in healing my ocd.

Annd there goes the oleophobic coating.
I confirm that XO wet apply covered a scratch on my gnexus display.
It probabely only works for scratches on the coating though, not for deep scratches on the glass.

Quality seen protectors. I'm personally a fan of xoskins, best on the market imo

Tip of getting them up good...
Run a hot shower in your bathroom and steam up the room. The steam will remove all the dust particles in the air which is the cause for bubbles that cannot be removed.
Then apply the protector. I usually pull just the back off a little at the top. Line it up and scroll down with a credit card to the bottom. If you still have bubbles just work them out pushing them to the side, top or bottom of the device. As long as there is no dirt or dust under the skin you will be able to get rid of them.
I always use the dry application protectors. I find that they always leave a weird film on the screen. You can really see what I am talking about when you remove one of these from you phone.
Some might say a tip would be to not use one.

Some might reply to that tip and say they should read about what happens to unprotected screens.
Put it on outside you wont get dust under it.
While I did just start another thread complaining about ZAGG type screen/body protectors I will admit that certain ones offer excellent screen protection. Extreme Guard can be had on Ebay for about $5 for most phones, Nexus included and they're awesome. Very low smudge, and fingerprints. They're cut well and despite the pain of wet install screen protectors they are much easier to install than body protectors. I would recommend them.

Do tell.
What happens to unprotected screens? I've had my Nexus since Jan. with no screen protector. It attracts finger prints but that's not a problem when you have micro fiber cloth (or your pant leg).
I'm not damage prone so to each his own, I guess.

Tried the steam method etc.worked a treat. No bubbles.didn't do the shower though waste water lol.was having a coffee so held it a metre above the kettle and it worked fine. Only for 5 seconds or so ..don't want to damage her!

Or get a reusable screen protector.
I had the Boxwave one, i'm able to remove dust by using some tape and time.
Realook screen protectors. They're awesome. I have them on my Rezound, and they'll definitely be on the nexus when I get it too. I went to Florida the other day, had my phone in a bag on the beach, and of course sand gets everywhere, and scraped up the screen protector pretty good. Not a single mark on the actual screen though. Plus it feels almost exactly like the glass on the phone.

No screen protector is perfect so far. The only two I'd recommend are XO, and Martin Fields. XO is a wet application with a rubbery feeling. You might be irritated with the feeling, if so get Martin Fields. Martin Fields are dry app and matte finished, however it conducts fingerprint and oil like magnets. I went with Martin Fields.
Where abouts are you in the UK?
I have an unwanted XOSkin screen protector for the GNex. Its the one that goes to the screen edge.
Ill sell it for the price they are selling it for.. You save on postage... although if your too far away then nevermind
How much are they?

My martin fields is a glossy finish, didn't know they had two different versions.
I would say Martin Fields has the best fit and finish. I have always had better luck with the dry application protectors. The wet applied ones always have a strange uneven surface that always looks like crap.

This is the right way to do it.
The static from what you're peeling off gets rid of any lint that will end up on your screen, which reduces bubbles. I didn't believe it until I got a perfect application a few days ago. This was with a really cheap screen protector too (I ended up taking it off, it got scratched in like a day...lol).
Also...you can tape some handles on the screen protector to avoid your hands actually touching the sticky side. This is key, IMO. Any time you touch the side, you are at risk for lint.
I just recently put on an invisible shield... i dropped my phone shortly after. Now there are two thin cracks on the phone. Very straight and thin. I cant tell if its a screen crack (i think it is) or just a defect in the screen protector (i hope it is). Aghhhh

Will Screen Protector cover up some scratches

Hi all,
Pretty sad at the moment, just found 2 scratches on my s3(one vertically around the middle, and one horizontally around the bottom) that are pretty noticeable in daylight.
In the dark it is minor but still there. It sucks because I cant remember any instance where I could have gotten a scratch and I've had the phone for only 5 days. Do you think a screen protector will help hide these scratches in any way? I'm not totally destructed over this I just came to realization that this screen is not as durable as I initially thought it was. I just really need to protect over these next 2 years until my contract is up. I ordered a armor suit for the phone btw.
Also, if any suggestions please feel free to throw them my way
Thanks for any comments or help!
Invisishield will do the job and hide most scratches. Everyone phone I get the first stop I make is at the mall to get an Invisishield put on it. They are guaranteed for life of phone.

from my personal experience the hard plastic covers dont do such a great job
i bought an iphone iwth a ghost armor protector over the entire phone after i bought i i get a iphone 4 case for it when it was an iphone 4s a bit bigger and it peeled off the plastic "armor" and to my surprise there was a **** load of scratches i got ripped but i learned ghost armor does a hell of a job hiding scratches
if you dont want the entire phone done get the invisishild ones they do a great job as well.

I feel you on that one. I still don't know where my scratches came from haha. I wish I would have taken a bit more precaution but I thought the glass would be a bit more reliable considering everyday use. Anywho, the S3 is a great device and have no gripes about it!
Hopefully the screen protector I bought off amazon will cover up the scratches for the most part, if it does that I will be more than satisfied.

Breaking from a drop is definitely understandable, but chipping or cracking from being in your pocket with nothing else is pretty fragile. Definitely use a case with it, even the ones with rounded corners have been known to chip quite easily.
