VOLTE On T-Mobile - Asus Zenfone 5Z Questions & Answers

Has anyone had any luck getting this to work? I've read a few posts with people having problems with it not working. Any word from Asus yet? The phone supports volte but with TMobile it seems it's not working. Im hoping maybe it needs a patch to get it working
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk

It's blocked on AT&T too. Seems that ASUS has it locked out.

I returned mine because of this. Asus has not and probably will not work with T-Mobile to activate this feature. I spoke with both sides and T-Mobile utilizes the default config for VoLTE, but Asus has to load the T-Mobile profile to get it to work. The device definitely supports it, needs software update to enable.

Would this be something that using a custom ROM could solve? I just picked up one of these phones and would love to use it as long as possible.

Wireless Tethering - Missing in Japanese Docomo Version

Got my phone yesterday from Docomo in Japan. I was able to root it, but haven't been able to get wireless tethering to work. It doesn't seem like there is any tethering built-in, and none of the options available in the market appear to work with the galaxy nexus yet. Has anyone else been successful?
(aside from that, phone is awesome!)
Works for me...go to settings, wireless and networks, more, tethering and portable hotspot.

Well... damn that sucks. It doesn't look like I have that option.

Click Wi-Fi direct. Drag down your notification bar and click it (should say touch for settings next to wifi direct) after that wireless tethering should appear and you can turn off wifi direct.

Congrats on the phone.
Tethering will be enabled with a future update along with SP Mode Mail and area mail.
A rep said no date confirmed but hopefully by the end of January.
Meanwhile, have you tried tethering via bluetooth? I haven't gotten around to trying it myself but it may be worth a shot.

So it seems Docomo are doing what they're not meant to do, interfering with a nexus. Still, I guess its no surprise as not all networks are likely to stick to what the Nexus is about.

Sorry about that. It didn't show on my device until I checked Wi-Fi direct first and now its always there.

I noticed my Docomo Nexus has the Baseband SC04D0MKKD and was afraid of rooting or changing roms etc.
How is your experience, everything fine?
What's your baseband?
Can't you just flash the official image that Google released? To give it the pure stock experience instead of the rom you have which has been modified by your carrier?
http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html
I'm not suggesting you definitely do this because for all I know it could break your phone, but it's an idea, maybe someone else could confirm if this would be ok to do or not.
Just got my GN from Docomo and i can confirm there's no wireless tether option in this rom yet. BTW, since Docomo GN devices have SC04D0MKKD baseband and ITL41D.SC04D0MKKD build number, i think we will get updates from Docomo and not from Google. Is it correct?

I was actually about to buy the phone at a Docomo shop yesterday and noticed tethering is indeed missing; this thread just confirms it.
Does anyone know if the image Google posted on the Nexus support website can be flashed to the device without breaking it? If so, does it get rid of this and whatever other crap Docomo may have done to the phone (for shame, Google: aren't Nexus devices supposed to be free from this kind of shenanigans)?
If not, are the Nexus models on sale at Expansys Japan similarly gimped or are they standard international versions? I was willing to pay full price + carrier unlock fee to the Docomo shop just to avoid having to deal with shipping, but no tethering is a deal breaker to me.
Reported as coming...

Docomo reports it as coming in a version upgrade, as well as spmode mail. When I bought the phone, I was told by the rep that it should come in the middle of Jan.
Sure it may be delayed, but is there a legitimate (non-emotional) reason to doubt that?
I would be more concerned about getting dumped into the 'non-docomo' smartphone category, like iPhone users, and pay the significantly higher data rates.
I'm also interested in rooting & changing the kernel stuff on a Docomo Nexus.
Does someone here know if the carrier stuff that's having to deal with data is in the baseband SW ?
I want to change to those leaner kernels, but I don't want to get surprise in my telephone bill...
I think there are some ppl on the forums already who have changed to different kernels, who use JP model
I just picked mine up yesterday and I'm already trying to figure out if rooting it will break it or not. I'd love to go with a generic ROM instead of the neutered version DoCoMo gives us. I went through this same crap with my Xperia and it's maddening. I don't care about tethering near as much as making a wifi hotspot. Has anybody rooted successfully then used anything like barnacle?

Just loaded the stock ITL41F image from google on my DoCoMo Galaxy Nexus. Afterwards, I flashed the DoCoMo baseband back onto it, and it works perfectly. Tethering options are now there! USB, WiFi, and Bluetooth - confirmed they all work.
I have my Docomo Nexus since Dec. 2nd and the missing tethering feature and also missing spmode is a no brainer for me. They told me that spmode will come in December and tethering in January. I will stay on the save side and wait for the updates, because I'm not sure that flashing the ROM will cause other problems and as LIQUIDARTS said, will likely cause also higher data rates bills. Docomo's Open APN (Mopera) costs around 8000Yen at time (previously over 10000Yen).
With the google build, I am still able to connect to the mpr2.bizho.net APN (which non-docomo phones are not able to use,) under the PakeHodai Plan with tethering. The other mopera.net APN is the open one for those foreign phones which must pay the higher 8000-10000Yen rates, I believe. Access to the mpr2 one is probably restricted by settings on the SIM, and/or IEMI filtering (guessing.) I'm not a big fan of DoCoMo and all the crap they add to their phones and lock down, but they have.... hands down... the fastest and most reliable phone service in Okinawa.
So kevink817, do you flash newb's phones for beer?

@kevink817
that's why I choose the Nexus instead of the Galaxay SII LTE. Except of spmode mail client/service there is nothing from Docomo on the phone!:
One can still use the mpr2.bizho.net APN with their non Docomo phone but you be dropped down to 128k transfer rate and an additional charge of 300Yen per month for it's use. I do this at the moment with my Samsung Omnia 7.
On my Docomo Nexus I have a normal flat rate data plan. Yes, they are using IEMI filtering! My hope is that they might be drop down the open APN rate to 5000Yen.

T-mobile ROM on At&t G4? Is it safe?

Is it safe to put a rom from a different carrier on my unlocked phone?
Its a att phone that im using on t-mobile.
no
It's extremely dangerous
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
I thought that might be the case.
I can't seem to get tethering to work.
I haven't rooted it yet but I think the problem would be that the carrier wants to be able to know if your tethering so they can charge you for it. And it's trying to re-route though an alternative ip that informs att as aposed to the one T-Mobile uses.
I don't think rooting and flashing another att Rom would fix that.
Not sure though. I don't know much about it.

AT&T Note 4 Enable Hotspot Options!

I am in love with my Note 4 and don't want to replace it. I have stock AT&T Note 4 unlocked with all the AT&T apps and etc. and would like to enable hotspot without paying extra premium for that service to AT&T. I am travelling overseas this summer having it is a must for connectivity with my laptop. I have explored in following directions!
First rooting phone and then may find hotspot fix after that (not sure if something exists) but running 5.1.1, I don't think there is root available yet for me? I found several posts upon googling that it's not available. Even if I get it rooted, is there concrete solution to hotspot fix? I don't want to downgrade to 5.0.X? and then root as it's just too much hassle!
OR
Easiest fix right now seems I get rid of this phone and get International version (I believe modeled SM-N910H ?) And that should allow me enable hotspot out of box from settings menu? correct?
Also will TMobile version SM-N910T, if I buy unlocked, will it allow me to enable hotspot? Does TMobile put software restrictions like AT&T? I don't want to buy and resale and all that headache!
Please advice!
Thank you
Not a single reply please help!
Only thing I know you can do on the AT&T version is to get a family share plan on your AT&T service. Tethering is included in those plans, then enabled on the phone with the stock app. I use it without problems on mine.
That's all I've got.

WiFi calling on Verizon network.

Has anyone confirmed that this feature works on the Verizon network on the US unlocked version of the phone?
I'm surprised that no one has the answer to this question.
Probably not. VZW seems not allowing WiFi calling on non-contract phones
Motorola's website says Yes, but I can't find anyone who has done it first hand. Just ordered one on Amazon so I'll let you know...

Please do. This is a puzzle regarding the WIFI. It looks like it supports their 5g also. Can you confirm this as well?

That's confusing since the unlocked (non contract) Galaxy Z flip has wifi calling on Verizon.
Verizon chat support says Yes, but I don't put a lot of stock in that. (chat screens attached). I'm hoping it will at least be enough to get the activation fee waived if it doesn't work and I return it. I bought a Razr from Verizon not realizing it was the 2019 non-5G version. It will likely go back because I'm having trouble swallowing $1000 for a generation behind phone, but I love the form factor.
Razr 2020 will be here Wednesday so fingers crossed and stay tuned.
So far not looking good. I made sure the phone was updated to the latest OS and apps, but there is no wifi-calling option to turn on. If I move the SIM back to my old phone wifi-calling works just fine. I'm going to call Verizon support later, but I'm not optimistic. I'll update again after I talk to support.
I spent an hour on the phone with a pretty knowledgeable tech and no luck.
Motorola has updated it's website to only say "Supports 4G, VoLTE", no longer 5G or wifi calling.
WiFi calling isn't working on Vodafone UK either, and the phone came from them.
The WiFi calling 'app' is installed, but the options in the settings are not available.
Did anyone on any network got WiFi calling to work?

EVR-L29 on ATT in USA

So, just today, my Mate 20X stopped making or receiving calls. Looks like ATT shut down 3G calling. Anyone on ATT in the US find a way to continue using the EVR-L29? Anyone get anywhere with ATT tech support on this issue? I REALLY want to continue using this phone. If not, anyone know of a suitable alternative of the same size (7+ inch screen) that is VOLTE enabled with the proper bands for ATT? Don't want a folding phone. Anything else out there? Thanks!

I have the same issue with my Mate 10 Pro. For the last few months I had to keep calling to keep my IMEI whitelisted. This might be the end of the line. I called ATT earlier and this time they said there was nothing they could do. They said the hard phase out started yesterday for non-voLTE. Data and text still work, just not voice. I'm hoping magically there's still a workaround, but I dunno anymore.

I hear ya. I'll let you know if I find any joy . They are sending me a new sim but a guy at the att store said it probably won't work. Wondering if there are Huawei phones that have VoLTE and USA bands this is the third time I've been squeeze out of a great phone due to tower upgrades. sucks
Good luck. I previously swapped sims with the ATT u304aa phone they gave me, and it didn't save me this week.
Problem solved!! Ditch ATT. Went to T Mobile after they sent me some stupid E sim card that wasn't even compatible with my device. They put in one of their sim cards into my phone and BOOM...just like that, my Mate 20X has VoLTE. Turns out ATT doesn't want to help people out.

Both tmo and att are corporate. But tmo is less corp and more people oriented than att.
