Pixel xl phone app unresponsive 9.0 - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Hi, I'm aware that several people have issues with the new pie rom.
Unfortunately, I have a problem that I haven't seen before on the forum:
It takes like a full 5 sec to call somebody and the same to end it.
It's very frustrating because I never know how to react in this situation (did he heard? Etc...)
I don't want to factory reset and I got everything stock.
Anyone has an idea on how to fix this?
Can I wipe cache with the stock recovery? Maybe install an other phone app?
Thx

i am having issues in pie as well. i cant seem to transfer large files to the phone.doing so makes the phone restarts. i tried it 5 times or so. fhis update is not good

Only way to clear up issues is a clean factory image install if this was not done to begin with.

OK thanks...
Though I blindfully hope someone will be get some alternative has I don't want do execute such extreme solution

It's actually relatively painless. Apps restore automatically when you go through setup, calls and texts are restored, as well as system settings and WiFi networks. Takes me ~30 mins total, and maybe 5 of that is actually looking at the phone, the rest is letting it sync and restore backups automatically.

I was thinking about it doing a factory reset once the final came out but I've heard stories from fellow moviepass owners that are unable to use the app when switching phones. That would make a valid concern for factory resets as well. Not because of lag but I have noticed battery seems worse after the upgrade and wanted to factory reset to rule out. As I ran all the ota betas of pie a factory reset isn't a bad idea anyway.

Your device ID is tied to the app. When you factory reset and reinstall the app your device ID is reset. You can root using Magisk and then install Titanium Backup to backup the app and data, this will preserve the ID. i had to do this when switching ROMS.

[Q] Super Sluggish: 4.4.2 or Root?

Long story made short, I upgraded to 4.3 after switching over to AT&T and fell quickly in love with the selective privacy app. However, my battery would only last about fifteen seconds (exaggeration) so I upgraded again to 4.4.2 without performing due diligence. As you all well know, Google took away the privacy app. So I took the next logical step and rooted my phone (TowelRoot rocks!) and added xPrivacy.
My problem now is an extremely sluggish phone. Would this be due to the upgrade (4.4.2) or the root process? Would it make more sense to downgrade or flash a custom ROM?
Root should have no effect on performance at all. Its more likely that there is some data from a previous build causing a process to hang.
I would factory reset and start over clean. Only restore essential data.
You can also use Better Battery Stats. Find it here on xda. Great app for solving battery problems.

I think I can't see the forest for all the trees. Is a factory reset done through the phone itself? (i.e. Settings->Accounts->Backup and reset->Factory data reset) Or are you referring to finding the proper ROM and flashing through Odin?

You can do a wipe of the cache and data via recovery. Factory reset via the phone should work too.
Factory resetting from Settings actually just reboots recovery and performs it from there. So doing it either way will net the same result. And yes, thats the factory reset I was referring to.
Note, if stock recovery is on the device, factory reset formats the data partition, so ALL apps and data are wiped. If custom recovery is installed, it instead will selectively delete everything but your Internal SD Card, preserving any data you have stored there. Either way, always have a current backup.

[Q] Help ! can't find the problem with my LG G3...

Help ! I own an LG G3 and randomly had a problem with the stock messaging app as it was failing and crashing, so then I decided to reboot my phone but as it rebooted, it was still the same except it had a stock background, no knock code, and my home + recent apps buttons do not function at all but show touch feedback... also when I long press my recent apps button it brings up the settings tab which it should do, which is odd, also my return/back button still works fine. I switched my background to my original one and enabled knock code again, then tried rebooting, hot booting, and powering off and on the phone but nothing worked it even reset my background again to stock and disabled my knock code. I can answer any questions other questions, Any help would be appreciated, Thank You !
Edit: Notifications do not show and the stock camera shortcut ( Hold volume down ) stopped working.
I'd probably try a factory reset if you haven't already. Also list your current software version and carrier info., which might be helpful to us in helping you.

Be sure to backup your messages/address book, that problem sounds like an excellent candidate for a factory reset solution.

It's a Sprint phone, software version LS990ZV4
I was gonna use that as a last resort, but I'll give it a try. Guess I'll have to reroot my phone... Again

Well, if you are rooted, you might try going into your custom recovery and wiping cache and dalvik-cache.
Since you suspect the messaging app, maybe wipe the data for that one as well? You'd lose all your messages, of course.

I don't have a custom recovery, whoops. The messaging app was fixed after the first reboot, which is when my phone booted that all the other problems occurred. Thinking of just backing everything up and factory resetting, although I wonder if I back up my phone and reset it then load my back up would the problem persist ? as maybe it stems off the soft/firmware, feel like this is the problem since the buttons show touch feedback but do not work.

Glad you seem to have it resolved.
BTW, a couple of notes and suggestions on best practices:
1. If you root and intend in any way on using the elevated permissions to modify your system, you should install a custom recovery, such as TWRP. This will allow you to backup your entire system at any time and restore in the event of an oooops! event.
2. If/when you have a custom recovery:
NEVER accept an OTA (over the air) update. It will bork your phone.
NEVER perform a factory reset from a stock ROM. It will bork your phone.

Pixel XL - HUGE data usage NOT rooted

Hey all,
I've done heaps of searching here and the wider web but only found reference to rooted phones failing to take updates.
I can't get a screenshot on here right now as I'm at work so no wifibut:
- Android OS _______________3.04GB :silly:
- Chrome__________________434MB
- Google Services ___________24.13MB
- etc
When I read about the failed update I checked in there and sure enough I have a 2017-5 patches system update sitting there failed, when I retry it it will download successfully then do step 1/2 of the installation then fail.
So it seems this would be the problem but the phone is definitely NOT rooted, any ideas??
thanks
You speak in codes, man. Could you explain your issue simpler? Right now I see an Android OS usage of 3.04GB. That seems abnormally large times 10. No one should have that, really. So it seems like your Android OS process downloaded multiple copies of system updates in error. Is that your problem?
Your post is still largely incomprehensible, so I won't make a final conclusion.
These are just suggestions:
1) If your phone is downloading system updates over and over, just damn update so it stops, or factory reset your phone.
2) If this is some kind of a rogue app, you are literally funked. Good luck trouble shooting it.
In any case, GL!
Yes, android OS used 3.04GB in ~5 days, my best guess is it was due to repeated attempts at '2017-5 patches system update'
Sorry, when I did a search I got heap of references to rooted phones having this issue so I guess I just talked from that reference point? It seemed to be a known issue but for rooted phones.
I just wanted to be clear that my issue matched those symptoms but was not rooted.
1) I've tried a manual update (many times) fails at the same point, I assume this is what is causing the data usage, as mentioned above.
2) Pretty sure it's not a rogue app
I'll try a factory reset, it's only a couple of weeks old (warranty replacement) so I hadn't really thought to reset straight away.
The phone doesn't necessarily need to be rooted to fail the update. A previously rooted phone can also fail to update as described, but typically that would mean an unlocked bootloader. I would have figured that the phone would have been reimaged and the bootloader locked on a refurbished phone, but maybe that doesn't happen. Is the bootloader unlocked? If so you could image the phone yourself to see if that works to fix it. If the bootloader is locked and a reset doesn't work, then I figure you might need to contact support about getting a different phone.
https://developers.google.com/android/images
I think you've gotten good information from everyone so far but just to add some clarity.
I had this exact same issue and was not rooted but did have an unlocked bootloader.
A factory reset did not resolve it. At the time I had issues, there were questions about rooting the stock images so I flashed PureNexus and have never looked back or had the issue again. Also, Verizon did add data to my plan and credit my account for the additional charges to negate the cost. Hope this helps!
It sounds like an issue with your phone that Pixel support might be able to help you with but they will certainly suggest a factory reset so you should do that first. Since you have a refurbished phone you don't know how the previous owner was using it and its possible a modification he made is still on the phone and causing you problems. If the failed system update isn't actually causing the excess data usage it could also be a carrier issue. I know some Project Fi users had that problem and it was related to the service. Google gave people credit for the excess data. You could also have an app that is interfering with the update so a factory reset should definitely be your first step and I'm guessing it's fairly likely to fix your problem.

Refurb troubleshoot?

So I got a warranty refurb sent to me from Google I started it up and loaded it up from a backup.
Since then I just manually install my apps don't restore from backup up the back up seems to be worse right away.
From the factory room I tied a factory reset and on setting up the phone Google play services would crash instently couldn't do anything same after the next factory resetnusing the recovery menu of holding power button then long hitting volume up.
So that's when I reflashed updated factory rom.
Since day one Google service, Google maps, Google photos and Google play services all have random crashes they seem to happen the most around 4am 12pm 4pm 7pm
I have tried deleting app caches and storage still happens I have removed myself from the beta programs still have issues
I have factory reset a few times I've gone a day without installing third party apps and I just can't go without something's but even no third party apps I have issues but less
I have reloaded the Android rom to both partition a and b and I seem to get an issue on partition a seems to always never boot stays at the loading screen some times I boot and it's like the radio never booted says no sim and no signal reboot and everything works.
Sometimes when having crashing issues the apps will get very pixilated looking in the app drawer also on a boot I had the Google splash screen fill-up the whole screen and poor quality.
From what I know about pcs typically I'd start testing ram and hdd if those were good then I'd say the motherboard is bad and then that's usually the end of issues
Anyone got ideas I can try. Are there ways to test ram and storage?

From your post, I'm really not sure If I understand how you first started out of the box, but you did eventually flash a full Google image without modifying the flash-all script, right? In other words you did not remove the "-w" switch and allowed the script to wipe data and begin fresh? Before ruling it a hardware issue, you may want to try Deuce's Script which seems to have some success in restoring the phone to a factory state and recovering from various problems. Try to avoid the temptation of just jumping in and running the script... take the time to read up first before you get started. Best of luck! :good:

Returned previous phone because the vibrate motor stopped and thought it would be nice to get a newer phone that wasn't rushed released maybe.
When flashed new rom yes just ran the script since all you need to do is double tap on it as long as all updated adb/fastboot is in same folder also looked up how to manually switch partition which looked like it was only doing one partition.
Thanks you for letting me know about the other script I'll try that.

Tried it still same issue most time the issues would be non existent untill I opened an app at the wrong time then it was like i got hit with a virus or something.
But sent out the refurb got another refurb have had 0 issues thank goodness! Glad I'm done with that.

Camera won't open; YouTube doesn't load

My Pixel 2XL is acting up starting this morning
- The camera app won't open, it crashes instantly. Other apps can't access the camera. I tried clearing the data, cache and restarting. Nothing has worked so far.
- YouTube is stuck in a load loop, all is see is the loading circle to infinity. I attempted to clear cache and data and install an older version. Again, nothing works.
- Restarting didn't solve anything.
- Both issues linger in safe mode.
Any ideas on wtf could be going on?

Sounds like you've got an unexplained, interesting and unwanted glitch! Are you full stock, or rooted?
Your only solution will likely be a factory reset, or possibly a dirty fastboot flash of the factory image so as not to wipe your data. You might even get by with just fastbooting the vendor image as well.

Could the OTA Monthly Update solve anything?

Even i have the same camera issue. It suddenly stopped working. Some times it does start after a few tries if i hold it in landscape mode. But mostly it keeps crashing and doesn't even allow other apps to access camera.
So a quick follow-up. Here is what i've done so far:
- Cleared storage/cache and uninstalled the camera updates
- Installed Android 10
- Updated to Camera 7.0 Beta
- Booted into safe mode.
None of these actions solved the issue.
I then resetted my phone (2 days ago) and that seemed to have solved the problem. However, starting a few minutes ago and while I was taking photos, I again lost focus in the lens and the app crashed.
What could be the issue? It seems its the focus is problematic though it worked for a good while. Surely it isn't hardware as the camera worked for ~40 hours after resetting.

Just because it worked correctly for around 40 hours after a reset doesn't mean that you can rule out hardware issues as a culprit. Especially since you have done everything you possibly could on the software end and it hasn't helped.

You're absolutely right. I did another reset (this time without restoring from backup) and the camera doesn't open at all. I'm hoping its a OS bug.
Thank god the Pixel 4 will be released in 4 weeks.

I have exactly the same problem that they report, it does not open cameras or YouTube.
Can you give me the steps to upload a factory image?
