A very strange thing happens to me today.
My Pixel XL 128 (never rooted, with bootloader locked and running the lastest official Oreo) suffered a soft reboot when I clicked a YouTube link in the notification shade. After that, I ended up with home and recent buttons, not performing their actions. They still vibrated and the Home button kept the animation. The status bar did not showed notifications, even when they arrived (notification sounds continue to ring), and notification shade pulldown stops working. No mobile network either.
Has anyone else faced this thing?
I had to factory reset (through settings) to use my phone again.
The exact same thing happened to me today. I too am not rooted, all oem, 128gb too, have phone since January, upgraded to oreo several days ago.
Today, I was about to open an email from the notification shade, then the phone rebooted itself on its own, now after the reboot I am limited and can only use the back button. Home and Recents buttons are registering my touch (they both vibrate when I press them) but they don't do their jobs. And what's also strange is that before this happening I had 'vibrate on touch' off. Furthermore, I also can't bring down the notification shade past the first step where it shows the quick settings icons, and notifications no longer show up in the notification shade - it's always clear at the top. When I go into settings>developer options, it says 'this user has no developer options (something like that).
I went to Google's support chat via phone and they couldn't help me either, the same behavior in safe mode, only back button works. I asked support if they could help me troubleshoot the problem without having to do a factory reset and they ended up going down that street and said it's the only thing they could recommend to do.
Any recommendations?
Yep same thing has happened with me as well. I didn't factory reset but I did have to do a reboot for my buttons to work again. Also I get a lot of reboots when I'm using PiP for about 5 mins.

Exact same symptoms for me on a Nexus 6P with Oreo.
Same happened to me. Stock Pixel XL, 128GB, Oreo. Even applied the latest September update but no dice.
Do the "Nova Launcher" fix.
1. Install Nova Launcer. nb. Play Store not installing anything for me, so downloaded the apk with Chrome (google for Nova Launcher.apk).
2. Allowed from unknown Sources
3. Opened Nova from App drawer (or can set as default launcher).
4. Hold down on empty space -> Widgets -> scroll the bar across to Activities. Hold down and drag onto home screen somewhere.
5. Scroll down to Setup Wizard and hold down on "SetupWizardUpgradeActivity".
6. Complete the setup options and candy!

Interesting. That's fixed the UI issues in their entirety, and Developer Options are now available again too. And apps are once again downloading and installing/updating from Google Play. I wonder what on Earth got wedged and how? Bizarre.
Thanks again.
I got the same with my stock XL 128 seemed to just happen for no reason, after messing around with none of the bottom buttons working the square changed to two rectangles on top of each other as the screen went split screen again for no reason after that I could press the "recent" now split screen button to get the options up to select what I wanted on the second half of the screen when I canceled out of that everything was normal.
seems to be a problem with the picture in picture or the split screen, I don't know how I got into it or out of it but just messing around eventually did it for me. it did have me worried at first as at the time I was in google maps and couldn't get out or even use google maps, the bottom buttons reacted as if they worked but ultimately did nothing until the recent button changed.

Apparently it thinks initial setup is running (or maybe it is in background). During setup it stops you from pressing home, or switching apps, or doing anything of significance. I guess running the setup to completion clears that flag.

Same here: Needed reboot to get "recent apps" button working (although it did "light up" when i used it).
THANK YOU!
I've had a lot of Google phones issues lately and woke up to this and was getting ready to be annoyed all day. Super easy fix as I run Nova Full anyway!
Saviour
You my friend are amazing. Google were absolutely useless, this fixed the problem and introduced me to Nova, double bonus
Thank you - Just the solution that I was looking for.
Thank you! I registered at xdadevelopers just to say that. I too did not want to do a factory reset and the change User to Guest option was not available. I also tried the enable screen lock to Pattern and rebooted.
Going to Nova Launcher and following your instructions to a T fixed the issue.
Grateful for your effort and time.

Hi, I've tried downloading Nova and Nova Prime, so desperate with this issue, I paid for it. Of course, it won't download, when I hit install, I get "install pending" or "downloading" this is going on for 4 days now. Please help!!!!
had my screen freeze again today with it being non responsive, it seems to be every time I leave chrome open and chuck it in my pocket, forcing the phone off and turning it back on fixed the problem this time, no clue what is going on with it as it only seems to happen with chrome.
You need to download the apk file through chrome, not through the google play store.
I have to say, thank you for posting that solution! I had this exact thing happen to my phone today, no idea why, but it sure was annoying!
All the same stuff happened to my Pixel XL original. Even lost "ok Google" spoken activation of assistant, and the night light failed to operate even though turned on in settings. Followed Google's advise and did the factory reset. Worked for about 3 days then bang, soft rebooted on its own while switching apps, and then all problems returned. Had the phone for just 6 months so Verizon sent me a replacement. Will see if it holds up. I told Verizon that if it fails again I want a Pixel 2!!!
Nexus 6 - stock Android
Android 7.0
Not rooted
Rebooted the phone when the phone seemed hung up. The notifications, home and recent buttons (The circle and square buttons) stopped working after the reboot. Only back button is working. The notifications don't work too. I can't enable the cellular data as well, and Google ID doesn't sync. In short only voice features (calling & text) work.
Interesting, but may not be notable ,is when the phone was rebooted and these functions we're lost, vibrate on key press was enabled.(which wasn't the case before)
I gather through threads here that some have successfully restored home and recent apps buttons as well as notifications by running setup wizard through Nova Launcher. But unfortunately I don't see the SetupWizardUpgradeActivity or setupTestActivity under setupWizard, when I tried to use Nova Launcher.
Has any one seen same/ similar issues with Nexus or other Android devices ?
Complete reset seems to be only other option. I am trying to avoid a complete reset if possible. ( I can't backup to restore after reset due to sync issue - device stopped sync)
Appreciate any help.
Wrong section. This is Pixel XL thread.
Understood. I see a number of pixel device owners reporting similar issues. (It looks like more of a SW issue than HW related). The Nexus 6 threads aren't that active and was hoping to get help from Pixel users if they saw and fixed similar issues.
I think it's called SetupExitActivity. It has no title, at the very bottom
I was looking for a list of changes and discussing the changes with the Verizon GS7 on Oreo. I have yet to find youtube videos reviewing the Verizon version. One website talks about how to use the new features but the Verizon version has a different setup menu then the others. As a matter of fact I was lost looking for the Bluetooth settings at first. It's combined with the Wifi and connection settings. I also noticed when using bluetooth on my car stereo the volume is way louder now. Is the volume louder on the phone with Oreo? Another change I'm happy about is being able to download more AOD's in the Samsung Theme store. I downloaded one with a Siamese cat. I love cats.
anyone else notice changes with Oreo on GS7?

The author has the Verizon variant.
I've noticed a bunch of bluetooth settings added in developer options (seems only picking some of them make a difference though and might reset on reboot?) and I personally really hated the picture in picture so have disabled that. A great way to do so if anyone else feels the need is to go to Applications, click cog in upper right and go to Special Access, pick Picture-in-Picture and enable/disable per app as you desire. My other gripe right now is figuring out how to disable the ugly rounded rectangle effect icons get. I understand I can theme them but I just want the normal ones without rounded edges For now I'm just theming all of them to circular in Nova. There are also some new always on display and lockscreen clocks/widgets. That's all that stood out to me

To remove the white background frame, go to display > Icon frames.... But!
Samsung updated a lot (not all) Google's apps icon to fit their icon frame design at system level. So they will be there permanently.
I noticed since the Oreo update whenever my phone reconnects to my cars bluetooth adapter the volume is reset and i have to turn it back up. doesn't do it on my bluetooth speakers or headphones. Not sure if it's the alpha version of the Poweramp that's the problem or Oreo. But it's sure annoying. and another issue i discovered when at the Lonestar concert is i can't turn the ringtone and notification volume to silent with the volume controls. i have to bring up the full controls and adjust each slider the hard way. I had several notifications throughout a song and couldn't silence my phone in between taking pictures and videos.
Upgrading GS7 from Nougat to Oreo
Guys I spent 5 days working on my Edge S7, after an upgrade to Oreo that went wrong. Most videos tell you to upload only the AP file and for me it didn't work. I then saw a video about Odin and learned the meaning of it's buttons. If you are using a Verizon S7 Edge with Nougat and you want to upgrade it, you need to upload 3 of the 4 files, the BL, AP & CP. On my first attempt I uploaded the 4 files, including the CSW one and the Verizon setup would not allow me to ADD AN ACCESS POINT, so I could use data with another carrier. The I decided to root(in a different way suggested on the below video and went wrong. My phone went into boot loop. I tried resetting but nothing happened. I then remembered that the file to be uploaded on the button CSW was for the carrier. I then uploaded the other 3 files this time and VOILĂ!!! The option Mobile Networks was detached from CONNECTIONS and when I clicked on Mobile Networks it asked for the SIM. After putting the SIM card I could add a CARRIER and do the rest of the settings
I had been playing with some settings in the hidden menu and developer options sometime before this problem began but AFAIK I returned everything back to default and the phone was working fine for a while afterwards. So I am not sure exactly why the Wifi and bluetooth stopped working. When I dragged down the notification bar to toggle the Wifi icon it just flashes like a strobe light and never turns on. If I go to toggle the slider in the Settings menu, it's either greyed out, or immediately slides back to Off. Discovered that the bluetooth also did the same thing, but Data connection still worked. Also for some reason the phone now took a solid 60 seconds to boot up when it used to take 30 or less.
I did a factory reset in case I had overlooked changing some option back to default, and when that didn't work I flashed stock ROM H815-20g-00-1023 (I'm ~ 95% sure it was running 20g to begin with but it might have been another letter instead) with LGUP. But the problem still persists --- I can't complete the LG setup process because the page for setting up the internet connection is either completely blank or if it does come up the checkbox for Wifi is greyed out... and even if the mobile data option is able to be selected the setup wizard will not let you proceed without Wifi.
Any idea what might be the problem and how to fix?
Many thanks!
I've looked every which way on Google for possible solutions but none of them match the scenario I'm describing. Is this really a problem that no one else has ever had? :-O
Hello everyone, i've been experiencing this problem for a while now: every time i put an app in the background (swipe up on gesture / middle button in traditional), Android immediately closes it for me. I keep seeing in the list of open apps (long swipe up on gesture / square key in traditional) the apps I should have in the background but as soon as I open them it's like I'm starting them for the first time, not saving anything I was doing before. So far i've been able to live with it, but now I can't postpone this problem anymore.
What i tried so far:
Restarted the phone several time
Turned off adaptive battery and battery optimization
Turned off energy saving
Didn't touch anything in the developer settings
And i got another issue probably linked to this one: in the GMail app, the notifications for multiple accounts only works to the account you are viewing, not to the others. (Example: If i'm connected to two accounts, A and B, and i'm viewing B's emails, if i receive an email on A's account the notification won't work. If i receive the email on B's account while i'm viewing A's emails, it won't work either).
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Just in case you want to know i'm currently on 11.0.5.0 build.
EDIT 2: Link to my reply with a possible solution to the application issue: LINK

Xiaomi team for our device is at fault. If you want the best android experience you should buy Pixel phones.
I'm also having this problem. Seems that restart helps a bit for some time but not for long. It is really an awful experience to use the phone like this. Having the 4 GB version.
It's the first time that I'll complain about this phone! But the use is unbearable now! I have the 4gb version too! I hope the next update fixes things
As far as I know, this problem is common on our device. If the next update isn't going to fix it, then I'm switching to a custom ROM. HavocOS, RebelOS or LineageOS 17.1.
Never had this problem before but is indeed the first time I'm also considering a custom Rom too!
If you're rooted you can fix this using LSpeed app
Hello again, i apologize for being away for a while, but i had personal problems.
I just wanted to reply to my own thread because today i updated to 11.0.7.0 build, but they don't seem to have solved anything? The changelog says only
Optimization: Increased system stability. Reduced system lag

(other than June Security Patch). I'm reading the replies now, and i have to tell you that (currently) i can't root or install a Custom Rom because it would conflict with my bank's application.
So, once again, no support from Xiaomi... but the great news is that i may have found a solution for the application problem! I will link this reply to the main post, so you can find it more easily, let me know if it works for you too!
What i did:
Disabled Adaptive Battery under "Settings -> Battery ->Adaptive Battery"
Disabled Night brightness (also the plannings)
Disabled Do Not Disturb (also the plannings)
Disabled Rest mode (if any)
Rebooted the phone
Try it out with two application, and if you want to reactivate some features after the reboot, i discovered that "Adaptive Battery" creates problems only after some days since it's turned on, so i suggest to keep it disabled. For the other settings, i can't confirm anything because i haven't tried yet, so let me know.
Thanks
Finaly it worked. :good:
I was searching for this problem for a long time.
Your solution worked with me.
I want to say:
I already jave disabled adaptive battery, Night brightness and Don't disturb mode. But only Recovery mode I needed to disable it, then I rebooted the phone.
Now I can switch between applications, and no application have been closed.
Thank you
what recovery mode do you think?where can I find it? thanks
