can't enable cellular data - Home , recent apps button stopped working - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Nexus 6 - stock Android
Android 7.0
Not rooted
Rebooted the phone when the phone seemed hung up. The notifications, home and recent buttons (The circle and square buttons) stopped working after the reboot. Only back button is working. The notifications don't work too. I can't enable the cellular data as well, and Google ID doesn't sync. In short only voice features (calling & text) work.
Interesting, but may not be notable ,is when the phone was rebooted and these functions we're lost, vibrate on key press was enabled.(which wasn't the case before)
I gather through threads here that some have successfully restored home and recent apps buttons as well as notifications by running setup wizard through Nova Launcher. But unfortunately I don't see the SetupWizardUpgradeActivity or setupTestActivity under setupWizard, when I tried to use Nova Launcher.
Has any one seen same/ similar issues with Nexus or other Android devices ?
Complete reset seems to be only other option. I am trying to avoid a complete reset if possible. ( I can't backup to restore after reset due to sync issue - device stopped sync)
Appreciate any help.

Wrong section. This is Pixel XL thread.

Understood. I see a number of pixel device owners reporting similar issues. (It looks like more of a SW issue than HW related). The Nexus 6 threads aren't that active and was hoping to get help from Pixel users if they saw and fixed similar issues.

I think it's called SetupExitActivity. It has no title, at the very bottom

Can't Access the Desktop (Disabled Some Services)

Hi everyone,
I have a rather sticky problem. A few hours ago I decided to disable a few of the services that I wasn't using on my phone in the hope of some more free memory and battery saving. The services where things like Stocks (including it's widgets and tools), weather, some pre-installed apps like Sound hound and a few others. As far as I could tell none were critical system services. After finishing I rebooted my phone to check the outcome....and it was not pretty....
Phone boots and everything seems to be loading fine (interface, startup apps, notifications), but my desktop is blank, none of the three soft buttons work and the only thing that works is the power button (to reboot). ah, actually the main menu (sliding from top) works, it slides down but whatever I select from it, the menu closes and nothing would happen. I assume I disabled a service that was in dependency with HTC Sense service and now that service is failing to load...?, correct me if I'm wrong.
At this point I have no clue as to what to do except to try to see if I can root the phone again, any ideas on how I can fix this without rooting the phone?
(I have no backup, no version info...nothing..., I wasn't expecting anything like this to happen while messing with non-critical app services so I did not go through the "backing up everything" procedure... sadly... )

4.2.1 bugs on GNex

I hope there is no similar thread on this yet and I request to all to add bugs here
my device: GSM international yakju-rooted
bugs:
1. clear recent apps in landscape mode, then switch to portrait mode and the cleared recent apps are BACK!!....and vice versa!!
2. Did OTA update with Bluetooth on and cannot switch off Bluetooth now with devices paired. Bluetooth switches back on automatically as soon as I try to switch it off. Correct me if this is a change in 4.2.1 or if this is indeed a bug.
Other complaints
1. apps on lockscreen widgets starting up randomly
2. 3 sec lag to start daydream and camera app
3. butter gone
4. laggy
luckily no random reboots and broken Bluetooth as others have reported on my device yet. I am not happy Google.
1. doesn't happen with me
2. can't test that (no bluetooth accessories)
Others:
1. lockscreen needs improvement (like clock widget auto resizing itself to full screen when swiping through screens)
2. my camera app starts in less than 2 seconds
3. 4.2 is a little heavier than 4.1.2 but still buttery compared to other high end phones
4. not on my phone
Something which happens to me when creating events on calendar... If i manually type in the end time of the event and the minutes are 59 (e.g. setting the end time to 22:59) when i press okay the time goes back one hour (e.g. 22:59 becomes 21:59). Anyone else?
I have none of the issues any of you have specified.

I got the same Recent App bug, which I didn't notice before!
But overall it is running smoothly. Did you try factory reset or flashing stock image?

* I listen to podcasts via Bluetooth car audio during my drive to and from work. Ever since 4.2, I get frequent Bluetooth disconnects while I am listening to audio. This never happened before 4.2. Unfortunately, 4.2.1 did not fix it.
* When third party apps such as Locale or Tasker turn WiFi on, it will not connect to any access points in range. However if I turn WiFi on via the WiFi settings, it connects immediately.
* Car mode is broken in 4.2 and 4.2.1. A "car home" app used to be able to invoke a mode where the home button would return you to the car app instead of the desktop. Now, the home button drops you to the desktop and crashes the launcher (Android's desktop process).
* Overall, much more lag and delays. Looks like 4.2.x is optimized for the Nexus 4 and its 2GB of RAM. 4.1.2 seemed perfect -- too bad we only had it for less than a month.
Well, my screen shuts off at random.. I can still press stuff, but it's totally black!! I have to put the battery and restart
bugs
I cannot use my BT headset, it disconnects when screen is off.
Camera is very very laggy.
Wipe phone and flash complete stock image!
I have none of these bugs! Bluetooth works like a charm.
Stock browser omnibox issue. When I open bookmarks and links from 3rd party appss, it's all good.
But when I try to type a search or url, the adress bar freezes and stays frozen on the screen. Rotate the screen and it becomes a black empty wasted space.
Is it a bug in in 4.2/4.2.1 or is it my phone?

i find it takes a couple of swipes of the security pattern at times, screen doesnt always respond as quick if ive not used my phone for a few hours.
didnt happen on 4.1.2 , not a massive issue but i do notice it

Firstly, It sounds bit too much to do a complete wipe and re-flash or a factory reset for just a dot.dot update.
Also, I have been reading that for some wipe and re-flash did not fix the Bluetooth issue. Also, a just a factory reset after OTA hasn't worked for all.
Can we please have confirmation here that a the factory reset thingy works so that all of us having issues can give it a shot?
In case we should wipe and re-flash, can it be done in the following way?
1. full backup system (in my case using titanium backup)
2. factory reset
3. copy the relevant image , yakju 4.2 in my case, into memory and flash zip using cwm recovery (6.0.1.5 in my case). then flash 4.2.1 similarly.
4. restore root.
5. system data/apps restore
please let us know.
International Yakju here and I've get the most annoying out of the problems. Random soft restarts. I've done a soft reset and it didn't help. I'm getting really pissed at this. Thinking of rolling back to 4.1.x
I havent tested bluetooth but I have random errors, sometimes when phone is locked It vibrates, I unlock it and it is asking with wich program I want to open, I choose gmail and it attaches a bug report, a .txt file with 4mb and a screenshot tottaly black.
weird. 4.2.1 yakju

I agree with the 3rd and 4th points. Camera app is quite different from ISC 4.0 and Jelly Bean 4.1, both icons are rotating while the phone is rotated. However, Jelly Bean 4.2's icon, instead of rotating, they shift the position while the phone is put as horizontally. I hope these will be fixed in the near update.

I got the same bug on both my galaxy nexus and nexus 7. For those who said that they don't have this bug, did you leave at least one app on and rotate the screen while having the recent apps menu open? Try again.

Can I turn off updates
OTA update to 4.2, totally stuffed my setup, flashed 4.2.1, no difference, have now flashed stock 4.1.2. to make the phone work as it should do.
Problem 1: The signal strength meter vanished on my car screen, no indication that bluetooth had connected.
Problem 2: The speaker, as I am sure we are all aware, is rubbish. I am using the pucker car mount and have a small speaker system set up and hooked into this so that I can hear warnings from CamerAlert. The phone connects over bluetooth but the CamerAlert warnings are directed out of the device speaker and go via the car mount to the speaker system - works a treat. With 4.2 this totally disappears and I get half a warning from the device speaker itself.
Having gone to 4.2 and back I can vouch for the fact that it is the update that is wrong. It will take me another day to get the 'phone back as I want it and I will then do a full backup. Thanks a bunch Google for, really professional update.
All I want now is for the 'phone to stop nagging me to update, anyone know how to turn off updates ??
my phone freeze after taking a picture today, so weird it didn't happen before and i need to pull out the battery in order to restart the device because the power button not give a respond.. so sad.. in 4.1.x everything is good.. for the first time on my gnex i need to pull out the battery twice today.. huh!!
Wow. I was very pissed of with the overall lagginess of 4.2/4.2.1 update, but I thought I might wait and hopefully Google will fix that. But then I noticed just how ofter the stock launcher crashes (leaks from RAM anyways). 5-10 times in an hour after using heavy apps like Chrome, Pocket, Facebook etc I press home button and I get and empty wallpaper. WTF? How is this even possible for a stock app?. And then there are things I've mentioned in other similar 4.2-reated threads like camera animation that lags and music widget that stops responding and keeps playing after headphones are unplugged...Gosh, that's the worst update (for me at least) ever. And now I noticed that recent apps bug. It does exist. Awesome.

Home and recents buttons not working

A very strange thing happens to me today.
My Pixel XL 128 (never rooted, with bootloader locked and running the lastest official Oreo) suffered a soft reboot when I clicked a YouTube link in the notification shade. After that, I ended up with home and recent buttons, not performing their actions. They still vibrated and the Home button kept the animation. The status bar did not showed notifications, even when they arrived (notification sounds continue to ring), and notification shade pulldown stops working. No mobile network either.
Has anyone else faced this thing?
I had to factory reset (through settings) to use my phone again.
The exact same thing happened to me today. I too am not rooted, all oem, 128gb too, have phone since January, upgraded to oreo several days ago.
Today, I was about to open an email from the notification shade, then the phone rebooted itself on its own, now after the reboot I am limited and can only use the back button. Home and Recents buttons are registering my touch (they both vibrate when I press them) but they don't do their jobs. And what's also strange is that before this happening I had 'vibrate on touch' off. Furthermore, I also can't bring down the notification shade past the first step where it shows the quick settings icons, and notifications no longer show up in the notification shade - it's always clear at the top. When I go into settings>developer options, it says 'this user has no developer options (something like that).
I went to Google's support chat via phone and they couldn't help me either, the same behavior in safe mode, only back button works. I asked support if they could help me troubleshoot the problem without having to do a factory reset and they ended up going down that street and said it's the only thing they could recommend to do.
Any recommendations?
Yep same thing has happened with me as well. I didn't factory reset but I did have to do a reboot for my buttons to work again. Also I get a lot of reboots when I'm using PiP for about 5 mins.

Exact same symptoms for me on a Nexus 6P with Oreo.
Same happened to me. Stock Pixel XL, 128GB, Oreo. Even applied the latest September update but no dice.
Do the "Nova Launcher" fix.
1. Install Nova Launcer. nb. Play Store not installing anything for me, so downloaded the apk with Chrome (google for Nova Launcher.apk).
2. Allowed from unknown Sources
3. Opened Nova from App drawer (or can set as default launcher).
4. Hold down on empty space -> Widgets -> scroll the bar across to Activities. Hold down and drag onto home screen somewhere.
5. Scroll down to Setup Wizard and hold down on "SetupWizardUpgradeActivity".
6. Complete the setup options and candy!

Interesting. That's fixed the UI issues in their entirety, and Developer Options are now available again too. And apps are once again downloading and installing/updating from Google Play. I wonder what on Earth got wedged and how? Bizarre.
Thanks again.
I got the same with my stock XL 128 seemed to just happen for no reason, after messing around with none of the bottom buttons working the square changed to two rectangles on top of each other as the screen went split screen again for no reason after that I could press the "recent" now split screen button to get the options up to select what I wanted on the second half of the screen when I canceled out of that everything was normal.
seems to be a problem with the picture in picture or the split screen, I don't know how I got into it or out of it but just messing around eventually did it for me. it did have me worried at first as at the time I was in google maps and couldn't get out or even use google maps, the bottom buttons reacted as if they worked but ultimately did nothing until the recent button changed.

Apparently it thinks initial setup is running (or maybe it is in background). During setup it stops you from pressing home, or switching apps, or doing anything of significance. I guess running the setup to completion clears that flag.

Same here: Needed reboot to get "recent apps" button working (although it did "light up" when i used it).
THANK YOU!
I've had a lot of Google phones issues lately and woke up to this and was getting ready to be annoyed all day. Super easy fix as I run Nova Full anyway!
Saviour
You my friend are amazing. Google were absolutely useless, this fixed the problem and introduced me to Nova, double bonus
Thank you - Just the solution that I was looking for.
Thank you! I registered at xdadevelopers just to say that. I too did not want to do a factory reset and the change User to Guest option was not available. I also tried the enable screen lock to Pattern and rebooted.
Going to Nova Launcher and following your instructions to a T fixed the issue.
Grateful for your effort and time.

Hi, I've tried downloading Nova and Nova Prime, so desperate with this issue, I paid for it. Of course, it won't download, when I hit install, I get "install pending" or "downloading" this is going on for 4 days now. Please help!!!!
had my screen freeze again today with it being non responsive, it seems to be every time I leave chrome open and chuck it in my pocket, forcing the phone off and turning it back on fixed the problem this time, no clue what is going on with it as it only seems to happen with chrome.
You need to download the apk file through chrome, not through the google play store.
I have to say, thank you for posting that solution! I had this exact thing happen to my phone today, no idea why, but it sure was annoying!
All the same stuff happened to my Pixel XL original. Even lost "ok Google" spoken activation of assistant, and the night light failed to operate even though turned on in settings. Followed Google's advise and did the factory reset. Worked for about 3 days then bang, soft rebooted on its own while switching apps, and then all problems returned. Had the phone for just 6 months so Verizon sent me a replacement. Will see if it holds up. I told Verizon that if it fails again I want a Pixel 2!!!

Galaxy S9 locks itself when screen is rotated. (Samsung support unable to fix issue)

First of all, let me state that I am desperate. After going through many fixes and channels, I cannot find a fix. Let me also state that I am new to the forums, and apologise if I miss out anything here. Do let me know if I have missed out any important information.
The issue: When the orientation of the screen changes to landscape, the phone immediately enters the lockscreen.
Further defining the issue: This issue occurs only when the orientation of the screen changes. When screen rotation is locked and the phone is turned on its side, the screen orientation is unable to change and the issue does not occur.
Device specs:
One UI version: 2.0
Android version: 10
Baseband version: GX960FXXS8DTD1
Kernel version: 4.9.118-17633310 #1 Mon Apr 20 13:03:37 KST 2020
Build number: QP1A.190711.020.GX960FXXS8DTD1
Android security patch number:
1 Apr 2020
Timeline of issue (includes events leading up to issue and attempted fixes. Please note that I do not know what I am doing.):
9 March - Bought Galaxy S9 second hand from a phone shop, factory resetted prior to purchase. No issues watching YouTube videos or Netflix videos. Phone is kept at home and charged regularly.
? Apr: Phone settings are adjusted and a theme is downloaded. No issues still.
8 Jun 7:00am - Phone is prepared for daily use. App Inspector and ADB Debloater are used hide some apps (read: every form of Bixby) . Only system apps with a clear and unneeded function are hidden. Multiple apps are installed from the Play Store. One third party app, Ymusic, is downloaded from a website.
This app has not caused any issues on 3 other Samsung devices (S7 Edge, Note 9, S7). APK extractor is used to extract Video Editor from a Galaxy S7, and it is installed on the Galaxy S9. The S7 does not have any issues.
All apps downloaded are already present on the Galaxy S7 with no issues except for a remastered version of a game called "There Is No Game Jam Edition". The older version of the game has no caused any issues.
8 Jun 12:13pm - Two videos are watched on the YouTube app in fullscreen with no issue. Soundcloud is visited. Visited drugs.com and reddit.com. Watched more videos on YouTube app. Tested smallest possible delay in double pressing left menu button to switch between apps (like alt-tab but for Android). Discovered that while the S7 has no noticeable delay, the S9 requires more than half a second to pass after the first press in order for the second press to cause the next app in the list to be selected. If the two presses are back to back with no delay, the S9 simply stays on the app selection screen.
8 Jun 2:13pm - Watched a video on YouTube app. Turned screen to landscape, and phone locks itself.
8 Jun 2:58pm - Engaged Samsung official support in remote control session. Samsung tech used General Management in settings to reset all settings twice. Tech also removed lockdown mode from power button menu. Tech uninstalled some possible culprit apps: Ymusic, 1.1.1.1, Malwarebytes. Tech guided me to boot into safe mode. Issue persisted even in safe mode. Tech instructed me to factory reset phone. He also stated that if the issue persisted, I would have to send it to Samsung's service centers for an inspection. I expressed concern that I may have caused the glitch and that following the same setup procedure as before would simply cause the glitch to return.
Note that I also do not have access to my laptop to "debloat" , as I have sent it for servicing on the morning of 8 Jun. In addition, I have developed some sort of swollen infection on one of my fingers that makes typing into a command prompt to "debloat" not just uncomfortable but also very unhygienic (I did not see pus until this time). Writing this on a mobile device, on the other hand (or my thumbs) , is OK.
8 Jun 6:29pm - Posted this issue on Samsung Reddit and twice on corresponding Discord. Posted on Google Android help forum. No replies on all. Messaged Android enthusiast friends (who may/may not be technically competent). Friends suggested deleting One UI cache and data. Issue persists.
9 Jun 10am - Posted issue on Tech Support Reddit's live chatroom. Some members suggested posting to XDA.
9 Jun 1:34pm - Discovered that minimum delay between presses of left menu button to switch apps is now insignificant.
are you sure all you did is debloating? because I did it once and I got zero problems, beside debloating shouldn't cause your phone to do that far. and non of the apps you mentioned above could cause the problem imo.
My suggestion :
- just use custom rom, if you want to stick to OneUI but got no Bixby and unnecessary Samsung apps or what so ever just flash Alexis ROM (OneUI 2.1 already). It is a bit tricky, since you have to unlock bl, and flash twrp and other thing. but it worth imo.
- if not, just flash again the stock firmware and redo the debloat
I am very sure all I did was disable and hide some apps with obvious purposes (such as Bixby) with ADB. While I am open to the possibility that something I disabled caused the issue, it makes no sense that a few hours would pass before the issue appeared. All I did in those few hours was watch YouTube videos use Ymusic, so I could not have possibly picked up any form of malware (which would be blocked by Malwarebytes anyway) or made any changes to break my system.
For now, I am going to factory reset my device and test landscape orientation after disabling each app while simultaneously praying to the Android gods that nothing goes wrong. Alexis ROM looks like the solution I am looking for, but unfortunately I know my limits and installing a custom ROM is beyond them.
This is a problem with my stock android s9
I'm frankly just about to give up. I factory resetted the device and redid installing all the apps, set them all up and got the settings in order. Guess what, the same exact glitch occurred out of the blue. Along with two more- a noticeable delay when double pressing the overview button and the lock screen clock settings being un-clickable. I'm running out of patience and hope for this device, but then again all the others I have are equally broke. Pity, was hoping to start working food delivery, too.
UPDATE: With guidance from a friend, I have used Odin to flash a friend's functioning copy of Android 10 on my device. I am going to configure it as usual and pray that nothing goes wrong. Will update here in about 24 hours' time, the time it usually takes for the glitch to appear. It should be noted that yesterday, I was watching videos on Landscape mode just fine until I decided to finish up changing my settings. That was when the glitch occurred, so I highly suspect that some setting I changed is causing it.
UPDATE 2: After flashing my friend's ROM, I went on to install only 1 app (App Inspector) and remove only 4 system apps while paying attention to any changes(disabling Always On Display broke my lockscreen clock settings so that was nice). Still, I could rotate the phone to landscape just fine. It was when I pressed the setting "lock home screen layout" that the glitch occurred. On one hand, this adds up, as the glitch occurred soon after changing this setting yesterday. On the other hand, I do not recall changing this setting the first time I configured my phone. I will experiment further and update this thread.

Nav buttons stop working with disabled lock screen profile

I recently upgraded from LOS 18.1 to 19.1. I was having issues with battery drain and finally decided to upgrade. The battery issues are completely fixed. A new issue cropped up with my profiles however. I have a "home" profile that disables the lock screen when my phone connects to my home wifi.
Since the upgrade, when my lock screen is disabled, my home and recent apps button stop working. Other things stop working as well like being able to copy paste between apps. My somewhat usable workaround for now has been to enable the recent apps screen when double tapping the home button, for some reason this works. I can return home by tapping the outer edge of the recent apps screen. This is what I'm running for device and OS:
Device - Poco X3 Pro (Vayu)
OS - LineageOS 19.1 microg Oct. 24, 2022 release(from https://lineage.microg.org/)
Recovery - TWRP
I found a bug report on Gitlab for the exact same issue here: https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/5189
They're reporting it as fixed for the most recent builds, which I'm currently running and still having the problem.
I'd really like to avoid a device wipe and reinstall as I have some MFA apps for work that would be a big pain to get going again. Does anyone know of any fixes? I'm guessing it's permissions related of some kind as it's like the device is only half unlocked or something. I've tried creating a new profile as well as disabling profiles, rebooting, and trying again, nothings worked so far. Should I just open another bug report on Gitlab? Appreciate any help.
This seems to have stopped, but I have little idea as to why. I noticed it stopped after I connected my phone to my PC with a USB to transfer files. After I did that, for some reason the lock screen disable is working fully as intended now. All nav buttons work, copy+paste, etc.
