Are there any privacy concerns with using Redmi phones? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

This is my first Xiaomi phone.
I saw few threads every now and then about Xiaomi devices sending data to chinese servers. Even saw it for that mi fit app they use for mi band.
I personally didn't create mi account cause I don't really need any of those apps but I'm just wondering if there any security/privacy concerns like backdoors and spying and whatnot?
If there were would devs on xda already knew about this stuff?

[Q] Do data (Images and videos) get leaked?

I bought a redmi 1S in India from flipkart.
I had a question weather data (Images and videos) get leaked to china if we use the stock MIUI Operating system?
I have this question as I read the news about US army banning Redmi devices for the soldiers.
Someone please give me a conform answer. I think it will need someone on stock rooted rom to log all the packet data and wifi activities.
THanking you in advance!

Yes miui sends data to their server but it doesn't mean they are leaking, cheating etc.even iPhone also sends data to their server so what about them.

Yes fappening happened due to iphone servers having Celeb's pics .. but there's still a confusion over whether it was due to simple passwords or sub-standard encryption in icloud.

India IT laws are a joke and fear more about ur data landing in gov hands ( if you are doing something gov dislikes )
No one can guarantee if stock miui is hackproof or mokee or cm11 for that matter. there could be very intelligently written backdoor present.
Only security you can have is your insignificance.

Did u log data activities? Also does whatsapp and all get leaked?
What exactly gets leaked?
Yes it is well known that it sends info to servers on China.
Now before anyone say but Google and Apple do this as well. Yes they do but I would rather have a US based company do it then China. We have laws here that protect the info as to where there are no such laws covering the Chinese military. Which is rumored to be the main backer behind this company that went from not exciting to being able to produce thousands of devices.
And yes the US government has banned all products from this OEM from official use and are not even allowed to be carried into work at all.

Spyware in stock fw?

Hello,
bought a new Xiaomi Mi6. Have the newest developer fw ruuning on the phone. I heard that in the past chinese Phone having bloatware and spyware. But i read nothing about Mi6. Everything fine with the phone?- Ok, google is still watching.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Someone did find that miui sends statistics back to Xiaomi but I think all stock firmwares do it these days.
Companies use the data to make more money by making improved products.
Its not really fair but in the end I guess we get better products?
The only worry is we don't know exactly what they have and what they sell to others....
Then again does Xiaomi need to sell it to others?
Probably more valuable to make better products for them.
Google.... Yeah unless you ditch google apps they are always watching.
For evil purposes? Probably not.
For those damned adverts? Yes.
Hi, then its fine. Statistics is normal, have it also acitvate in my aicp rom for i9195. Ok, when there ist no bloatware which is known as a data spy, will use it first without flashing new rom.
Thanks.
Bloatware can be quite a vague term. What's bloatware for someones can be usefull to other. All the Phones come bloatware from Samsung to Google, but if you actually use their apps like they want to is not bloatware.
Some people prefer to be spied by Samsung, some by Apple, some by Xioami, etc in my case i want Google to spy on me. Don't the road all the companies will gather data if you use their apps and roms.
But If you are afraid they may steal some info like CC or bank accounts and steal money, then don't worry. They won't do that, not that they need or that is useful to them.
In my case the MI6 got much better after i ditched all the Xioami bloatware and rom and put all the bloatware by Google xD.

about redmi note 5 pro bricked

Xda developers please try to solve this problem
Our devices are just a piece of metal now
Look to Xiaomi forums threads. http://en.miui.com/forum-153-1.html
XDA have no way of resolving bricked devices caused by xiaomi's bad implementation of the feature.
Even if some third party was able to find away to disable ARP completely on xiaomi devices,
who would take the risk with there devices to test it.

As Huawei is Banned by Google so are we getting a bootloader unlock for CFWs?

Its really sad news for all Huawei owners (including me) as Google banned the further updates and pure Android apps for Huawei devices. This is really a huge loss to us as well as many of us have expensive devices and by this Ban we will loose our phones worth as well.
I have no idea what huawei will do for now but they should at least offer bootloader unlock to all devices as this will give the opportunity to the developers to update their phones to latest stock android version by help of famous CFWs (like LinageOS, AOSP etc.).
What you think about this issue?
by offering unlock bootloader ability to huawei phones owners , huawei may not loose his customers..
it needs to be done.

Same here. Unlocking bootloader can also put them in more risky position. But it will give a free hand to other developers who can work on custom versions and builds of Android.
Buy a Xiaomi. Getting a phone with a manufacturer made chipset like Samsung's Exynos or Huawei's Kirin lacks support. They save money at your expense.

OnePlus Vulnerabilities, Security Risks, Backdoors, Hacks ... Or not...

I really liked what I saw in the OnePlus 7 seriese. My HTC 10 has had a rough go of it and since 5G hasn't matured enough, I decided that another multi-year use 4G phone should replace it vs some cheaper hold over. I was bouncing between the 7 Pro and 7T over the Pixel 4 series for all the reasons that everyone else was - better hardware (for the most part) for a cheaper price.
Then I started reading about security concerns and the whole "typical Chinese company" types of posts. I understand that OnePlus is relatively new and made mistakes (like the one just recently...) but how much truth is there in malicious intent? I read discussion of the 3 series and later 5 series had some kind of hidden communication of data occurring outside of user consent. Even so, I would expect more exposure if there was some malicious activity discovered. Is the opinion of this community that the company is trustworthy? Or as trustworthy as any other mainstream player (Apple, HTC, Google, Samsung)? I am not worried about the typical data collection that all phones do for stat gathering or bug reports. I only really care about actual sensitive personal information, passwords for banking apps (your bank, Venmo, PayPal), etc being compromised. I get there are super paranoid people out there that fuss over any data sharing and that tends to get blown out of proportion or confused in threads. Some have suggested that the first thing one should do is install a custom ROM (and firmware!?) to eliminate potential hidden embedded malicious software in their Oxygen OS flavor of Android 10. Is that something that I should actually consider with this device? I have rooted and used custom ROM's on all my HTC phones since the Thunderbolt and planned to eventually play around with the device, but I never would have thought to do it because I didn't trust HTC.
Anyway, I fear I may have read too many uninformed and paranoid posts to make a meaningful decision so I figured I would poll this community for incite. If there was something real being hiding in the bowls of OnePlus 7 series, I am sure the devs would have picked up on it immediately.
Thanks!
