How do i force the use of a 2.4Ghz WiFi network on my Pixel 2 XL ?
and.. no... turning off the 5Ghz network is not an option as the rest of the devices in the house are all 5GHZ
I have some home automation equipment that has a 2.4Ghz ONLY command hub. It automatically picks a 2.4 channel based on channel usage.
Unfortunately, the app and control device only know to use 2.4Ghz
I can't get my Pixel 2 XL to connect to the control unit as my phone always connects to 5Ghz. All the options within android do not have a setting to force connecting at 2.4Ghz.
I cant return the equipment and the manufacturer said the manual states the need for a 2.4Ghz WiFi capable phone to use with the app. Their website makes no mention of this.

I'm no tech genius by any means. However, I don't think you can alter the modem in the phone to only pick up 2.4Ghz. I have a similar situation in my house. So, I had my internet provider set up 2 different networks, one 5Ghz and one 2.4Ghz. They have the same password, but different SSID's. Don't know if that helps, but it's the best I can do :good:
What router are you using? My Asus router has 2 separate wifi networks for 2.4 and 5.0, but the devices on each can talk to each other. For example my OG Chromecast in the office is on 2.4 and my phone on 5.0 has no problem whatsoever casting to it. I believe the printer is also on 2.4, and every device on 5 can print no problems. There has to be some setting in the router to allow them to be one network.
Yeah my router has a regular SSID and the same name with _5G at the end. If you have something similar, just forget the 5G network and stick to the 2.4G one.

I too have a 2.4 and 5Ghz network. It does seem though its one network on 2 different frequency's. All the dvices in the house only see one network. i got my old 2.4Ghz only usb adapter and it had no issue connecting. so that tells me its one broadcast over two frequency's.
ill have to change this. thanks!
this isn't about 2.4Ghz vs 5.0Ghz frequencies - this is about Network Isolation
If you're having this issue, disable Network Isolation on your router

I see what you mean. Disabling network isolation should let his Pixel stay on the 5g GHz network yet control the hub that can only do 2.4GHz.

yep, that's correct. It's not usually a setting that's ON by default either
I have a similar problem with some smart outlets that I purchased. You pair them to wifi through your phone but I can't get my phone to connect to 2.4ghz and the plugs aren't compatible with 5ghz. The app isn't smart enough to realize that there is a 2.4ghz with same name/password.
My router is a Google Asus Onhub which has 2.4 and 5ghz with same ID. I ended up pulling out an old wifi extender to get a separate 2.4ghz channel. It works but now I have an extra wifi connection in my house. Not my ideal solution but it worked.
I did some reading after seeing this post and it was suggested to take the plugs and my phone someplace in my house that the 5ghz won't reach but the 2.4 will and my phone will use the 2.4. Then I can pair them with 2.4. So I might try that if I can find a place that the 5ghz won't reach.

Oh okay. I'm thinking of getting a couple TP-link ones.
Yeah I have a Roomba and a smart switch which both require 2.4 GHz network too. But my router and repeater are able to do separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. So they're on the 2.4 GHz while my Pixel 2 XL is on the 5 GHz and I can still control them from my phone.
Router: Google Wifi
phone: Pixel XL
Problem: Can't disable the 5 band on the router. Can't select the 2.4 band on the phone.
Solution: Turn on the phone wifi while standing out near my mailbox. Then it connected to 2.4 and allowed me to setup my smart bulbs.
That's a crazy work around. LOL

Why not forget both the 2.4 and 5G networks in your WiFi settings. Rename the 2.4 and 5G to have different names in the Google Wifi, then only connect to the 2.4 Ghz/enter the password. With separate names for the 2.4 and 5Ghz you should be able to isolate.
Separate names is exactly how I manage my 2.4 and 5 GHz networks.

What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz? I always connect to 5Ghz because the network speed is a lot faster, but that is the only difference that I've seen
5 GHz is faster but shorter range. 2.4 GHz is slower but further range.

I've got tp link and I use an Asus tri band router (2.4, 5lo, 5hi) and they all work fine across channels with each other.
That's because your router works the way it should. Your phone is on the 5.0GHz but can see the TP-Link on 2.4GHz. See my attached specifications for the TP-Link dimmer. It's 2.4GHz.
People with issues have to manually switch to 2.4GHz.

802.11n includes a number of "optional" features, so how much of it does the Galaxy Nexus actually implement?
My Wifi router supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously with different SSIDs, but the Galaxy Nexus only ever sees the SSID of the 2.4GHz AP. So I suppose it does not support 802.11n in the 5GHz band?
Also, even when standing right next to the router, it showed only a 65Mbps connection. Shouldn't that go to at least 150Mbps? And actually higher if MIMO is supported?
If the Galaxy Nexus' "802.11n" doesn't support anything better than 2.4GHz band with 65Mbps, it's a fake - 802.11g does 2.4GHz/54Mbps, so the "802.11n"-support boils down to be effectively nothing.
Has anyone managed to get better Wifi results with the Galaxy Nexus?
i think the gnexus is only supposed to support 2.4ghz band if i remember correctly. i get the same, 65mbps. all is good though i get great speeds and more distance. if 5ghz is in the hardware then software doesn't support it yet.
It does support 5ghz. Go to settings and then press wifi. Press the menu on the bottom right and select advanced. Then, wifi frequency band.
Weird... My WNDR3700 running DD-WRT is setup for 2.4 and 5GHz... My MacBook Pro is connected to the 5GHz SSID, but that is not displaying on my available wireless networks on my GNex...
The wifi settings are set to "auto", but even when set to only use 5GHz, it still doens't list it.
I'm connected to my 5GHz network right now so yes it does support it.

I'm connected to my 5Ghz network as well, however I'm only seeing 65 Mbps connection speed. Are you seeing a better speed?
Wi-fi performance for file transfers have been pretty abismal. Using the app andFTP and the sftp protocol I can only get about 1300kbps download speeds.
I get a weak WiFi signal on both spectrums compared to my DInc, DX, & DX2.

I've been playing around with WiFi - stock Verizon GN, 4.0.2. Cisco/Linksys E4200 DualBand Router.
Using WiFi Analyzer, my GN sees both 2.4GHz and 5GHZ bands, with the 2.4GHz band being slightly stronger (-46 dBm vs -15 dBm, for example). When WiFi Band Selection is set to Auto, it will connect to 2.4GHz every time. If I change it to 5GHz Band only, it will readily connect to that band.
Using Speedtest.net, I get Download speed of around 6mbps with 2.4GHz, if I force it to use the 5GHz band, I'll get over 30mbps. This was tested 3 times, semi-randomizing the sequence.
The range of 5GHz is obviously less, so it would not be practical to leave it on the 5GHz band only, as I'll need the 2.4GHz elsewhere in my home.
For what it's worth, I'm using Channel 11 on 2.4GHz and Channel 161 on 5GHz. I saw a few threads where only certain 5GHz channels are supported for connection, and those didn't include 161, but mine will connect fine. It's just that it'll go for 2.4GHz when given a choice, and a slight differential in excellent signal strenth.
Is this just the nature of the beast? Anything I can do to have it "prefer" the faster 5GHz band, while allowing it to connect to 2.4GHz when needed?
Hello again
Typically when dealing with 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz, you would assign different SSID's to each. That way you can control which network you associate with. As you already stated, you understand that 2.4Ghz has a greater range than the 5Ghz network.
As we discussed before in the other thread, wifi likes to hold on. However, it will show a preference to 2.4Ghz bands when signal strengths differ.

Funny running into you here!
I can play around with using different SSID's, but I'm guessing my GN will still choose the 2.4GHz if given the choice, since its signal is a bit stronger. If that's the case, then I'd have to manually have it connect to the 5GHz band anyway, little different from my current situation.
Too bad the WiFi settings don't allow us to prioritize our connection preferences.
Thanks again.
Please ignore this post.
I have a similar experience
sent from my googletron
Just to provide some follow-up here, I was able to more or less improve the situation.
On my Linksys E4200 Router, I changed the SSID on the 5GHz band, and removed the SSID oif the 2.4GHz band on my GNexus. So downstairs, it will automatically see the 5GHz band, and will connect to that, providing superior throughput.
I have the Netgear Wireless Adapter upstairs also on a different SSID (this is a 2.4GHz band), and when I go up there, the 5GHz signal is pretty weak, and so my GNexus switches to this fairly quickly. Not immediately, but pretty quick.
When I return downstairs, same thing - it will switch to the 5GHz signal reasonably quickly, especially if I sit down at my Computer, which is just underneath the Linksys router.
Hope this might be of help to somebody.

The S3 is capable of both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi and supports B, G, and N. It seems to be temperamental with the 5Ghz especially if you have high-end router that allows for frequency change, and also if you have a large house. Chances are high the 5Ghz won't broadcast all over the house.
Here's the difference between the two:
2.4Ghz broadcasts farther but has lower bandwidth
5Ghz doesn't broadcast as far, but has higher bandwidth
If your router supports it, the optimal settings are:
WPA2-AES secured with a Passphrase

Sorry it took so long for this response, I was banned for a while... Your router is near it's end of life because you have to constantly powercycle... There's ways to try and fix it... Restore the factory defaults, and load the latest firmware to it, even if it was running that already...

Here's a good chart:
"N" Number being the theoretical maximum, and Best case client "speed" being a real world scenario.
You have an older router, so it's only capable of 2.4Ghz with a 20Mhz Channel Width
Each increment in then "N Number" represents an extra antenna. e.g. 1 antenna will have a theoretical maximum of 150Mbps, 2 Antennas having 300Mbps, and 3 having 450Mbps
The higher bandwidth numbers (600, 750, 900) are for Dual-Band Wireless N routers, meaning the 2.4 can put out XXX bandwidth and the 5Ghz can put out XXX bandwidth. So the manufacturers add those two numbers together for marketing purposes.
The S3 only has one WiFi Antenna. It's theoretical maximum is 150Mbps, but you cant rely on what it's technically capable of. Use the "Best case client "speed" as a true judge of your link state, and according to that chart, you are right on par in a real world situation.

My Note 3 is having issues holding on to my wireless connection. I have an Asus RT-AC66U running merlin firmware. It connects temporarily, then disconnects and says it disabled the network because the Internet connection is to slow. I have had 3 other 802.llac compatible devices working without problems. 2.4GHz 802.11n works fine. I'll dig in more when I get back home. Anybody else having issues?
edit:
Apparently this thing doesn't like 5GHz networks at all, and it doesn't even see ad-hoc networks shared from two laptops I have tested. I might have to get it replaced, as I haven't seen to many other people having problems. It is definitely a problem with the phone and not my network connection.

The WiFi on this phone is horrible. It says I have unstable WiFi meanwhile I am right next to the router
TWEAKED 2.5
Same issue here, I have Asus RT-AC66U and the Note 3 keeps disconnecting from the 5GHz while other devices are fine on wifi
802.11ac won't be an official finished standard until next year, so, there's still room for improvement. New firmware for an AC AP and note3 should probably iron out bugs.
I'm about ready to upgrade to the Asus RT-AC66U myself (once it drops below $180 again), from a 2-year-old Netgear wndr3700 w/ddwrt. Will probably slap DDWRT onto it as well to compare wireless performance.
I finally have some time off to do some testing this weekend so I'll see what I come up with. I did notice that sometimes the connection would stabilize if i was sitting near the router and start acting crazy when I got up to do something. I disabled the "Explicit beamforming" option in the router and did notice an improvement. The top test below is with beamorming enabled. The bottom test was with it disabled. Still dropped a little in the middle but much better than before. I toggled the setting and ran the test a few times and was able to repeat the results, though this still might be nothing. Ill report back later with anything else I find.

asus ac66u
I am also running merlins firmware on my ac66u...I cant watch youtube videos while on wifi for some reason and also phone calls drop while using wifi calling...hopefully samsung will get the drivers straight a.s.a.p. everything else connects fine(15 devices) no problem...
Just for giggles, what's the phone ac speed? They're only doing 72 n 2.4, 150 n5. What's the ac5? Why don't they work on maxing n5 before jumping the gun.

The AC speed on this phone goes up to 433Mbps
Hello there... I just wanted to mention that i had made the jump to netgear ac1450 (ac, 2.4ghz, 5ghz) it was between that and the asus. But i picked the netgear because costco had a special sale on it, plus costco has awesome Costumer Service, and warranty in case something goes wrong... anyhow long story short, i am able to use both the 2.4 ghz and the 5 ghz without any hickups at least for now( knock on wood). although i would like more range it is definitely outdoing my linksys wrt54g which i had dd-wrt installed on both speed and range. From about 30 feet i get about 3-4 bars on the 2.4 ghz and about 2-3 bars on 5 ghz. also the signal is going through 2 ceilings. I will update if i experience any trouble, honestly i was a little worried when i received my phone because i had some wifi issues the first couple of days ( drop wifi and what not) but i haven't noticed it recently ive had the note 3 for about 2-3 weeks so far.

Interesting. Your Netgear appears to use the BCM4708 chip, whereas the ASUS uses the BCM4706. I wonder if the BCM4339 in the Note 3 is more compatible with one over the other. You would think that coming from the same manufacturer they would all be compatible. I am still running my phone through some tests, but so far it seems like there is something hardware/software related in this phone that does not like any 5GHz network I connect it to. Disabling explicit beamforming helped for a while, but the problem started happening again this morning.
just a quick update, i just flashed the latest firmware o my netgear ac1450 router which enhances/enables beamforming+ especially on 5ghz (from version 1.0.0.8 to 1.0.0.14) and i must say that my connection has improved further more its mostly on 3 bars sometimes 4 although i still seen it drop to 2 every now and then..
I returned the ASUS and ordered a netgear r7000 for a few bucks more. It should be here by Wednesday. I'll see how wifi works then, but I am not holding my breath.
RT-AC68R on 3.0.0.4.374_339 is good

FWIW, I have the Asus RT-AC68R on stock firmware 3.0.0.4.374_339. My wireless on 5GHz has been solid. I did a Speedtest last night which came back with 29.3Mbps down and 3.8Mbps up, and this was sitting one room away from the AP.
Before flashing to this firmware however, the 5GHz would never stay connected and once disconnected, I would have to access the router control panel and make a change, then exit and the 5GHz would be back. But now, on the newer firmware, it's been very good.
I am using the netgear r6300 v2 with stock firmware with no problems
I am using the RT-AC68U with AC I have no problems on my note 3. Only thing I guess you could say is a issue is every now and then the phone connects to WiFi and shows no WiFi signal but it connects and runs fine. If I reboot the phone the problem is gone. It happens like once every other week if that. I have the Comcast 300mbps down and 25mbps up connection. The highest the phone has done with WiFi is 165mbps down. This is on whatever the latest firmware is now.
Don't u have to change the SSID to make sure u are using the AC signal properly?

I also experience this issue with my RT-AC66U. I think the problem is that ASUS hasn't put in the option to set the 5GHz band as 100% 802.11ac, so if anyone else is connected it has to drop down to whatever crappy standard is before it. The current 802.11ac routers are really designed to be bridged to a second one. The insane throughput lets you create a solid high speed 2.4GHz network across a decent sized area. However, 802.11ad is going to poop on everything.

You have to chance the SSID to separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels. If you wan't guaranteed AC you'd have to only allow supporting devices on that band.
This is my two cents.
I use RT-AC66U with stock firm ware. I set up two SSIDs one for each frequency. That way if one falls over it will connect to the other connection. In My experience the 5ghz works best.
There are mixed results in this thread. What works for one does not work for another. I don't think it is the router, the Note 3 just does not play nice with Wifi. In researching Wifi problems was not tied to one router it points more to the Note 3.
Since I set up two SSID I have found it more reliable. I also use Tasker to control my Wifi and reassociate the Wifi connection.
I also found this problem to be intermittent. I have had my Note 3 since the release and did not have problems until last month. For the last few weeks it seems to be more reliable.
T-MOBILE has a trouble shooting page.

FWIW, I also had a horrible time with TouchWhiz disconnecting my 5GHz wifi all the time, saying "Your WiFi is Unstable". I have a Netgear R7000 router, known for its awesome range, but still TouchWhiz complained even when I was getting 4/5 bars. Anyway, long story short: After switching to CyanogenMod a couple weeks ago my WiFi problems are gone.
e.g.: When playing GoogleMusic via ChromeCast in another room, I often couldn't even play half a dozen songs before randomly having my 5GHz connection dropped, which results in the playlist being stopped as well, and getting kicked back to the GoogleMusic "play something" screen. With CM, I haven't had a dropout yet. Soooo... clientside firmware matters, and this is something that Samsung might have a fix for down the road in their KK update.
Just got a 1Gb network at home. Via cable from PC I get 700Mb but via Wi-Fi 5GHz only 100Mb. Things get worst with Pixel 2 XL via Wi-Fi 5GHz only 30Mb. My wife with iPhone X via WiFi 2.4GHz around 90Mb.
Is this normal?

No. You need a better router or need to use a less congested channel if you can.

Modem has:
- Wi-Fi up to 1.7 Gigabit per second
- 7 aerials
- 2.4 and 5 GHz
I am on channel 5GHz channel 36 at -30dBm on band 20/30/40 MHz and channel extension 40+44+48
I'm the only one on channel 36: there are three more networks on channel 100
PC and Pixel 2 XL and iPhone are in the same room of modem.
Never mind, it seems that the speed test I was using was bad (the one from Google)
With ookla I get instead:
- PC on 5Ghz: 85Gb/s (it's 2 years old but model is 4 years old so wi-fi card may even be a 5 year old model: intel dual band wireless ac 3165)
- Pixel 2 XL on 5GHz: 180Gb/s
- DELL LAPTOP on 5GHz: 85Gb/s

I hope you mean Mbps...
Regardless, I think your router isn't setup correctly then. I only have a 450Mbps connection with a Nighthawk R7900 and I max out with speed tests on my Pixel 2 XL, my Alienware Laptop with the Intel 9260 WiFi card, my wife's MacBook Pro, and her iPhone 8.
Yes sure Mbps ?
So what should I do? The device Is from network operator and specs as you can read are very good.
What's your WiFi setting? Ac or n or both? Channel width? Etc

I think you need to do some reading about how to setup your specific model or read reviews about your specific model. Just because it's provided to you does not mean it is a good product.
Sharing my settings will do nothing for you, even if we have the same model because WiFi signals can be affected by your home layout and your neighbors WiFi if they're close to your home.

Agreed. Personally, I turned off the WiFi from my router with my provider and have a two device mesh network WiFi.

Never heard of it but I checked the specs and although it's rated for 1300 Mbits/s, I don't know how close you'll actually hit that. Let us know.
