A security team named “Lookout”, who does have antivirus and anti-malware apps available for the Android platform, has said that there are a number of apps, all from the same developer, that are recording and sending out personal information from users’ devices to an unknown source somewhere in China, to include:
•browsing history
•text messages
•your SIM card data
•subscriber ID
•voicemail password (if it’s set to be entered automatically)
Is this a big deal? Absolutely. Should wallpaper apps be doing this? No way. However, there has been an unofficial response from Lookout concerning the uproar surrounding the situation, wherein Kevin Mahaffey, CTO for Lookout, Inc., states:
while the data the wallpaper apps are accessing are certainly suspicious coming from wallpaper apps, we’re not saying that these applications are malicious. There have been cases in the past where applications are simply a little overzealous in their data gathering practices, but not because of any ill intent.
While this is no justification for the problems surrounding the apps, it does clarify the possibility that this may simply be some slap-happy programming from an overly-zealous developer. Still, either way, we would recommend removing any of these apps in question. The list of suspected apps can be found here:

Ah, an Engadget reader I assume?
I'd pop back there and read their last minute update to their big story for the day where they admit they got the numbers wrong and the got the details wrong too.
So "millions of users" turns into 250,000. SMS messages, and browser history is not touched as they claimed and they admit hardly anyone ever sets their voicemail pin...I mean, have you ever done that?
lol... As my teenage son might type..."pwnd" I think is the expression... but with a big caveat on this occasion to the OP to say thanks very much for the heads up & the warning anyway... appreciate the spirit of the post.
I've removed endgadget from my Google reader a long time ago because of their stupidity but I see nothing has changed.

Basically it all come from Lookout who make anti virus and security software for mobiles attempting to scare up some business. Through a series of Chinese whispers their claims became more and more outlandish until culminating in "MILLIONS" of peoples emails and SMS messages being beamed to shady Triad gangsters.

We just spoke to Google, which confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus is no longer on sale right now, but Google says the device will begin shipping again next week. The company wouldn't get into specifics about why sales stopped, or whether new devices will include a patch that works around the court's preliminary ban, but they will indeed have the new Android 4.1 update.

From what I read they are going to remove the search functionality to be able to search for anything on the phone. Apple is lame and karma will get them in the end once people wise up and realize apple products come with too many limitations.

Google (the search company) can't put search on their phones anymore because Apple patented it...:screwy:
I sincerely hope Google is granted their notification patent and use it to crush Apple for their blatant copying of Android.
Im sure Google appreciates the publicity and boost in sales. Apple failed.
So new GNex will ship with JB. I wonder if tgis means we will be getting JB source soon.
This does go to show exactly how stupid and outdated our patent laws are that they allow for things like this. Google has had universal search as part of Android for quite some time and now all of a sudden it's an issue???

The issue isn't voice search, it's universal search allowing the phone to search for applications, contacts, and media already on the phone as well as the internet and alternative sources (wikipedia, wolfram alpha...) when searching (speaking or typing into the search bar). Apple first debut it in iOS 3 I believe. I don't know when Android started doing it but it was around the same time.
Iirc, didn't some Nokia smart phones have 'universal' search. You just started typing what you were looking for and it would spit back things you had on phone. I think you could enable it to search web too.
butter and jelly please...
I can only hope Google decides they can live without the revenue they get (yes, I have heard they get more from iPhones than from Android phones... dunno how THAT works but anyway...) from iPhones and pull all Google services from iOS.
It sounds very much like Google Desktop to me. It searches a ton of things on my computer and it searches the web as well.
Seriously though, do other industries have these issues and we just never hear about them? Cars tend to all look and feel very similar. How do they deal with it? What about TVs? They are all rectangles with screens. Most cameras work very similarly. There is a ton of products that we use daily that work very much the same all the time, so how come I never hear about them having these issues?

Never happen. all Android is to Google is an added revenue stream for their ad business. If Android fails they'll just go full on Apple. Selling ads on Google is what Google cares about.
I personally don't think Google will do anything because they want their services to continue running on iPhones. Apple can simple start putting in Bing apps and then Google would lose millions of dollars... my 2 cents why Google doesn't do anything....

I think it's time to make this thread as there are millions of people on the game that is still in beta.
The game is Ingress and it's an augmented reality game where two factions fight it out for all man kind. Taking control of portals and working with your faction to create mind fields is the goal, the Enlightened want to conform to a collective in mind control and the Resistance wants to rid the collective mind control for humanity.
The story can be found on line at: www.ingress.com but this thread is designed to assist on the basics, it would be unfair to favor one side over another as tactics of the game are only shared with the respective factions.
Do Not post personal information here, this game puts you in a real life proximity of other players and with that in mind it is easy for something to get personal in real life even though it was not intended.
This is a place to better understand the game itself and to collaborate for the community to learn everything involved.
I do not have any control over beta codes nor does anyone else in our community, don't ask and do not try to share your account or you will be banned, they do know everything you do in the game. Do not try to sell codes given to you by Ingress as they have been known to give out batch codes that are intended to be shared not profited from.

To get an invite you need to be creative, you go to your Google+ account and friend Ingress then create an image or anything supporting ingress in it and post it using these shouts.
@ingress
@ingressinvite
@inhressenlightened
@ingressresistance
Make sure it's publicly viewable so others can add comments to it and the better the idea the better your chances are, the ingress site email link isn't being watched but if you watch ingress on G+ you will see they release codes in batches try to time it in those posting times.

There are a few really good features on the desktop as well, they keep adding stuff in though. The one I thought was cool was on the desktop login when your on the map if you go over to the right and you see the +/- to zoom in there's a little yellow image of a person if you go over it with the mouse it will lean over to the left. Drag and drop that little yellow guy and it will give you street view of the location your looking at.

The codes are only good for a few seconds now, there's a plug-in you can download for chrome desktop that notifies you the second a code releases but it depends on how many people use it so you have to be quick about it. Go to chrome app store and search for the Ingress plugins, there's 2 of them but remember to go in settings and choose for notifications to be displayed in the top right corner. If you don't it will cover the area you have to type in the code.
There are a few places you can get info for the game, I just figured I would give the section a base location for XDA GS3 members to ask questiins and get answers that you don't have to go all over to find simple facts.

They were cool in the beginning because you got what you needed instead of hoping the farmed portals kick you back something. Now it's like pulling teeth to get anything from the portals and unless your one of those that enjoys decrypting code your kinda outta luck. Once in a while a code works but now that everyone gets the auto responses you'll be lucky to get a chance ti put ut in.
NRA Approved GS3
I've noticed more people reporting that they are having a hard time getting portal keys so I'm gonna post this trick I learned a few weeks back.
You go to a portal you already have a key to and need another for that portal, make sure your just out of range to hack the target and drop the key you have for that portal. Give it at least one minute for the server to register that you dropped the key then back out of ingress, turn on ingress again and you should see the portal and the key close together , now make sure the target circle only boarders the portal and NOT the key you dropped and hack the portal you should get a key. Once you get it retreave the key you dropped. Now you have a second key to give to someone else.
I've been able to get up to 5 keys on the same portal it doesn't always cough up a key the first time you try it but it will by the second attempt because you don't have one in your items. Good hunting.

Oh that. The iPad thing. It's probably a 1st gen piece of crap anyways. Which is why they don't mind giving them away. They could be refurbished after cracking them open to get some Apple secrets. I mean a million explanations! We dunno.
I didn't really see that as promoting competition because the company is definitely benefiting more from getting the developer than care about an iPad.

So what? You have to create an account for alot of employers. Fred Meyer, McDonalds, a bunch of places. They use it to keep your user profile and sometimes to keep past applications. By the way, the way I know you don't know for sure is your use of the word "probably".
This is shady as shady gets. They're CLEARLY going above and beyond to sell you on why you should do this. They sound way to desperate. To each there own, but I wouldn't risk it...#SCAM.

okay sir. everybody else is wrong and you are right. this is totally legit. we should all give our personal info to some random site because every body knows that everything on the net is totally trustworthy.
not.
Check it. I'm not trying to prove anyone right or wrong. I just want people to cite what they say. Have some proof and all that. If it's a scam, then someone should report it to the browsers (IE, Mozilla, Google, etc.) so they can stop people from going to it. Let them check it out. Don't just burn on it to burn on it no matter how many "leading" points there are. The only way to know for sure is to go and do it. Someone use a fake email and name and see what happens to it once they "steal" it and whatnot. Feel me?

...Also, many, many people use WearOS watches. Especially since 2.0. Not sure where you're getting the idea that "nobody" use them. You're either misinformed or you're just trolling.
I'm still using the watch despite everything.
It still works fine, except for the step counter but I don't care.
If we were to throw away all functional tech products only because of "unfair" business decisions regarding the updates we will waste money for nothing.
