I think it's time to make this thread as there are millions of people on the game that is still in beta.
The game is Ingress and it's an augmented reality game where two factions fight it out for all man kind. Taking control of portals and working with your faction to create mind fields is the goal, the Enlightened want to conform to a collective in mind control and the Resistance wants to rid the collective mind control for humanity.
The story can be found on line at: www.ingress.com but this thread is designed to assist on the basics, it would be unfair to favor one side over another as tactics of the game are only shared with the respective factions.
Do Not post personal information here, this game puts you in a real life proximity of other players and with that in mind it is easy for something to get personal in real life even though it was not intended.
This is a place to better understand the game itself and to collaborate for the community to learn everything involved.
I do not have any control over beta codes nor does anyone else in our community, don't ask and do not try to share your account or you will be banned, they do know everything you do in the game. Do not try to sell codes given to you by Ingress as they have been known to give out batch codes that are intended to be shared not profited from.

To get an invite you need to be creative, you go to your Google+ account and friend Ingress then create an image or anything supporting ingress in it and post it using these shouts.
@ingress
@ingressinvite
@inhressenlightened
@ingressresistance
Make sure it's publicly viewable so others can add comments to it and the better the idea the better your chances are, the ingress site email link isn't being watched but if you watch ingress on G+ you will see they release codes in batches try to time it in those posting times.

Great idea for a thread. I'm playing the game and I just love it. I'm sure I miss a lot of options though.
At least now I know how many android phones are in my neighborhood

There are a few really good features on the desktop as well, they keep adding stuff in though. The one I thought was cool was on the desktop login when your on the map if you go over to the right and you see the +/- to zoom in there's a little yellow image of a person if you go over it with the mouse it will lean over to the left. Drag and drop that little yellow guy and it will give you street view of the location your looking at.

If you sent in your email then they haven't even looked at those from the beginning but the best way is G+ and stay on them. I suggest getting an aftermarket battery (I bought a 4500 mAh battery online) your gonna need it.

I think this is a great thread. The OP was well written so as not to let this thread turn into a sided one, but rather general info for all for when it comes out of beta. I'll be watching this one for sure. I've been playing for a bit now as well.
There's also a Google community (G plus) called decode ingress that discusses ingress and daily pass codes that can be used to level up.

The codes are only good for a few seconds now, there's a plug-in you can download for chrome desktop that notifies you the second a code releases but it depends on how many people use it so you have to be quick about it. Go to chrome app store and search for the Ingress plugins, there's 2 of them but remember to go in settings and choose for notifications to be displayed in the top right corner. If you don't it will cover the area you have to type in the code.
There are a few places you can get info for the game, I just figured I would give the section a base location for XDA GS3 members to ask questiins and get answers that you don't have to go all over to find simple facts.

They were cool in the beginning because you got what you needed instead of hoping the farmed portals kick you back something. Now it's like pulling teeth to get anything from the portals and unless your one of those that enjoys decrypting code your kinda outta luck. Once in a while a code works but now that everyone gets the auto responses you'll be lucky to get a chance ti put ut in.

I've noticed more people reporting that they are having a hard time getting portal keys so I'm gonna post this trick I learned a few weeks back.
You go to a portal you already have a key to and need another for that portal, make sure your just out of range to hack the target and drop the key you have for that portal. Give it at least one minute for the server to register that you dropped the key then back out of ingress, turn on ingress again and you should see the portal and the key close together , now make sure the target circle only boarders the portal and NOT the key you dropped and hack the portal you should get a key. Once you get it retreave the key you dropped. Now you have a second key to give to someone else.
I've been able to get up to 5 keys on the same portal it doesn't always cough up a key the first time you try it but it will by the second attempt because you don't have one in your items. Good hunting.

Hi
I made a video of XDA Portal when it was in the black out. This video shows constant refreshes, updating the number count on the petition.
The rate went from about 22.7 to 30 signatures per second.

Well done to XDA for the great Blackout support.
Very impressive numbers of XDA supporters - thanks to everyone who signed the petition.

Me too, I watched it from the beginning.
Kudos to the moderators for taking a stand against SOPA and PIPA.
Very nice!!
A little less than 5 hours to get 50,000 "signatures", great work.
Lets hope this makes a difference.
Here's the letter I sent to my senators and representatives, written from the POV of my son. Anyone can feel free to adapt it to their own needs and send it to their representatives. I just wanted to do more than attach my name to a pre-made message which which could easily be dismiss after receiving countless identical messages...

Called my Rep and my Senators
I may not have signed the petition, but I called my House Representative and both of my Senators to let them how I feel about SOPA & PIPA.
I called rather than sent an email because talking to them lets them know we DON'T want these pieces of garbage passed. It's harder to ignore a phone call than an email.
This was the best idea to promote awareness

I absolutely hope you're right.
don't get me wrong, i'm not a pro "stupid law against internet"
but was this really necessary ?
a lot of visitor are from outside the USA
so even if we sign (i did it) the petition, the lawmans from the US will only think : what does this stupid french guy bother us..
also, even if politics get petitions from the internet... as long as people don't move on the real life, it will only be hopeless...
in france we had also some stupid laws, a lot of people said : we'll go to Paris and say our disagreement with us
finaly, there were only a few people in Paris, so they vote the ugly law ....
briging down XDA to say : we are against it and we'll only come back after 50k people signed the petition, is imo not very usefull
and by doing so you also force people to sign (were is the free will ?)
imagine the poor guy wo did a wrong manipulation on his device and he comes on xda to find help... he will comite suicide
a notice would have been beter, because the usefull informations are accessible
and you know politics are dumbasses... if they saw some actions like XDA they will say : 10 people does some action on internet to force other to sign it.. so the petition will be even more worthless into their eyes
i'm never against signing petitions, even against US laws, but here i found this a little too much
and don't forget, a lot of people from other countries come here, they have not the same mind as you...
some will say : yeah they are right i will sign it and refer this petition
other will say : what the **** ? i'm not interested in this **** put it back
and other will say : yeah but was it really needed to go that far?
The thing is that the future of XDA and numerous other websites which operate from the USA are at stake.
Logging on to XDA and finding the petition page (which you had been notified about prior to the black out) is better than logging on and finding that the website has been taken down because of a stupid copyright.
XDA folk can not just let it happen. Everyone needs to do their part. This way was the most effective, and I don't think that 4.5 hours of downtime effected development significantly, but it did show us the way (notice I am not using 'force') to fighting the SOPA petition.
It was your choice. If you wanted to see XDA back, you signed the petition. If you wanted the internet to stay the same you signed the petition.
A French person signing shows that SOPA is disliked worldwide, and the effects it will have (if implemented) on the world, and not just the USA.
+1 to that! Everyone should do there part, the domino effect of those two laws would be devastating! Well done all who signed!

To all American* viewers of this page, I would highly recommend CALLING your Congress critters and letting them know WHY you don't want this crap.
* == There was no slight meant for those of you not from USA.
I had some ideas this morning on what we could do to make the OS and usabilyity of the phone greater without hacking (I rolled out of bed and fell on the floor and then it came to me lol. Ironic right?).
*This will of course involve the browser which isnt the fastest but not the worst.
What if we made web applications for the KIN and a web apps store which basicially is like an android market turned into a mobile version and KINafied a bit and instead of downloads has links to webapps people have found and/or made. I would be willing to ut time into it if someone else will help and if you guys want this.
*Please leave a comment on your standpoint.
I stated this before. It was a work in progress called WebOS. I stated the idea, then people started to get involved and made it happen. Doesn't look like it will be done.
Yeah I know and it was a good idea so I stated it again because for some reason your posts always get passed off as bad, but I think some of them had good ideas.
That's not entirely true. I get impatient with people when they say "Just release the damn hack already" Or "Show some proof" I got annoyed so I gave up and gave those trolls what they deserved: Stuff to piss them off
True true but are you working on an online web app store optimized for the KIN or not? If you are can I be of any assistance?
I brought up the idea of web apps a long time ago but was simply blown off. I now have a Droid charge but still like to keep an eye on this forum. This is a good idea, but I do not have the apps I was using on my phone before I upgraded. However I did post them soif you look up my previous posts you could maybe as then to your list.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but your idea wasn't blown off. I stated the idea before you and they tried. I don't know here you were when we started but one of the main person that was in on this (Alex Williams) Left the train ride if you know what I mean. We made some good progress too.
im not so sure about doing apps for the device as long as we cannot really rely on the case or browser hehaviour.
on the other hand,im making some tests that could let you plug your kin on one pc and access the content wherever you want, through web browser
kinda....kino web version. kin on the cloud...whatever
must ask some guys to see if its doable in windows. but for linux, and probably mac it works. i just tested the kinect samples.
also is all done on javascript so if releases is instantly opensource.
tldr; makin something like studio....but on your pc so you will have to have it powered on, and that stuff
Johnwhat would we do without you. That sounds great. My next suggestion was something like that. If we can add our own apps without changing the software Im fine with that too. But changing the software to something like ICS would be a bonus! Can you give a bit more detail on what your program does?
mmm its too late here so i will just say that this will be just like kino but the interface will be by browser and from any device.
except the kin itself haha, will be the host.
this lets you edit the interface and the code in stuff like notepad.
also using css templates, designers csn change the gui, extend it..whatever

Thanks but what im trying to get us to do is make a website based app store with web applications designed for the KIN. basically just until we can crack this thing.
Sounds good I'll keep an eye to see how the progress is coming I thought you could use some games that cached to use source code to put in your site. I think the idea for a "Web store" or something like that, is out of the question. It's a good idea but the browser is slow, Plus we've tried this before..maybe I can ask people to try and do this again
to be honest... develop that would just take one evening.
the other stuff is just making it pretty.
the most imporant stuff is to store it somewhere.
and i may be... "overacting" but i wouldnt bet on someones personal site for storage of my "downloaded" or selected stuff.
Apart from that... well is a pity as kin doesnt accept ad-hoc networks so refreshing could be done from a laptop without internet.

not gonna happen. If electronics guys help us, we could just plug the samsung chip and use the wiring on the right pins, so read it in serial (UART) mode and dump the content into bin files (including possible rom content) like has been done for other Movinand devices in this forum (XDA). Of course no one has interest, and i got no means to do so, even if i had found the samsung documents describing the wiring.
And the alternative, which is decoding what XNA game dev studio says is not easy for me, so imma not gonna do it, and there is no other way to create a installable/runnable app (so no "do half and...." stuff that is on the other thread)
A thread was recently opened where a dropbox apk was pulled from a new phone and made available to android users on other phones, in this particular case, the SGS2. The apk allowed a user to have 48 GB of extra space on the Dropbox service. The thread was subsequently closed due to the apk being labeled as warez. A few arguments were made that because the apk in that form was not available in the Play Store it was therefore warez. That seems wrong to me. Many apks are made available by hackers and devs that are from other phones and are not available on the Google Play Store.
On Dropbox you are only able to get 2GB of storage for free if you sign up for the service. This apk got around that limitation and gave a free level user much more. I understand, I think, why some consider this warez but how is it fundamentally different from other apks that are snatched from phones and made available to people who chose not to purchase the phone the apk was developed to sell? All exclusive apps in a new phone are a form of business investment. If someone takes an awesome camera app that cannot be otherwise obtained unless one buys the new phone, then how is porting that apk to say a legacy phone where now a user can access that investment for no money?
Are there licensing issues at play here that make a ported camera apk or other similar type apk ethical to port? I find this to be an interesting ethical and perhaps technical issue. I'd like to learn more about the underpinning thought process for declaring some things warez while other software is just another ported apk.
If you know how this works, please chime in. I'm very interested. Maybe others are as well. Thanks in advance for anything you can offer.

Wrong. Pirated apps are modified applications that are different than their original intent. This could be an application that was compiled to be free, to "steal" media, to expand on services such as this drop box "hack".
There are plenty of android websites that are devoted to promoting this type of content. Even though the FBI shut down 3 this week, there are hundreds more.
With that said, I have a few apps in my library that I probably shouldn't. Shhhh.......

Good question. I wondered the same thing.
There is a thread on a modified version of skype that actually gives audible ring tones, among other things that skype developers neglected. It's quite ingenious work.
Is it warez too??

Everyone at some point or another has used warez. I do however agree the Dropbox .apk wasn't warez but however was an exploit. I myself used it because morally I see nothing wrong with it and I thank the guy. I support Drop box and have been using it for as long as I can remember. When people steal from developers like Applanet did before it got closed down, well that's just unacceptable.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Did not realize there was such shakey ground when figuring out what warez is. Quite simple it has always been any modified app(usually paid) that has been made to use without purchase of a license. Lets be honest warez have been around for ever and ever and a day. Some of the people that cry about stuff really need to go sit down somewhere.
Its ok to cry about eg. dropbox but then use a rom with the wifi hack in it? Download mp3's with a special app or use one of the many other questionable apk's according to his/her definition of warez.
Definition for warez:
Web definitions:
Warez refers primarily to copyrighted works distributed without fees or royalties, and may be traded, in general violation of copyright...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez
With regards to the specific dropbox.apk, it is stealing since that space on dropbox was not allocated to users of older phone models. I wouldn't call it "warez" as such, but it was allowing people to have access to space that they did not pay for or that the manufacturer of their phone did not pay for through their deal with dropbox. Dropbox allows people to have a certain amount of space for free. People using this apk were taking more than they were allowed to access. That is wrong and XDA should not allow it.
The difference between that apk and other apks being ported over is that this apk was not designed to run as a self contained application like a game or something, but as a link to off-device storage. These are very different situations so not really analogous. An inexact but somewhat better analogy would be a paid application for a specific device that someone else ports to another device but they are charging for it and not giving money or credit to the original developer. This is not right and would also not be allowed on XDA.
Also, Dropbox DID reclaim that space. I know a number of people in the Sensation forum were sent notices and lost that extra space and the stuff on it.

If we extend your argument to a ROM, which is a collection of Apps and system,
if someone ports the sgs3 launcher to sgs2, is that warez?
If someone ports the HTC sense to sgs, is that warez?
Should the whole mod community be shut down?

Samsung and HTC might say yes to those questions. I don't know myself, this is a gray area and the XDA team seems to take the general approach that if a reasonable person could think it is warez, then it is removed to avoid potential liability issues for the site as a whole.
For the launcher and sense specifically, I am not positive but I believe that the source code has been released and is available to all to download and compile, putting them on a completely different level than compiled apks which have been modified.
We have had this talk many times. The deal is that the devices OEM has paid said service for the ability to offer it on the phone. If it is used on any other phone that it was not paid to be on is what makes makes it warez. Like swype. It is allowed to be in a rom if the device came with it preinstalled but if it wasn't then it is considered warez. If a company asks us to pull it then we will.
As for the launchers. If Sense was ever fully ported to a non HTC device be sure that HTC would issue a C&D order that we would follow and then pull all links for it.

The twiz launcher has been ported to non Samsung devices.
Also wouldn't things like the old NFL app that was ported to non Verizon phones be the same situation? Those forums weren't closed the entire season until Verizon fixed it permanently then it didn't matter. Or porting the Sony launcher to a Samsung device, or porting the COD game from the xperia play... these are all examples of the exact same situation as the drop box situation. I don't use drop box that much so it doesn't matter to me, I just don't understand the line between porting for a benefit of developing and warez. Understanding how to get an app to work across different devices is considered developing isn't it? Cyanogen got a C&D letter for developing a version of android to be released on a device that got the exact same version months later. So in theory, isn't every JB port considered to be warez? Every leak? Every ported leak?
Situations like this are what cause a lower likelihood of people contributing back. If someone found an exploit, let the app creators fix the hole. That's the way it was for the NFL app. That was eventually turned into a hack. Then Verizon found a way to block it so only their customers could use it.

As for the CM team they got a C&D order to remove the gapps from their rom, which they did and is the reason AOSP roms dont have them included.
No that is not considered Developing. That is just porting. Big diff.
Understand that XDA works in the grey on alot of things, but if we get asked to pull something from the apps developers then we will pull it.
An example of what zelendel said about being asked to remove something, can be found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1891055&postcount=287
Velcro. What a rip off!

As I understood, the C&D was for releasing their newest market without permission. The agreement was made to remove gapps and make a recovery of them available to people who use them. This is also where the development for CM started taking off. This leaves then issue of gapps for all ROMs then. Since they are still ports are to be removed and added using the flash able zip (aosp style)?
I'm not trying to cause a rift. Just trying to help define a line. Does this mean drop box contacted a mod and asked the file to be removed?

The dropbox offer was only good for two years. It's just a marketing promo to get new users hooked and then charge them the normal rate. Maybe they are happy to have more people hooked. Otherwise why wouldn't they block it or reverse it at the server side?
Regarding software intended for a certain phone us considered warez If used on another phone, is there an official statement about this from the phone manufacturers??

I don't know if it exists already but i was wanting and looking for a app that lets you browse through ols newspaper articles ya know like have you seen one of those csi episodes where theyre investigating a case and then all of a sudden they are in the library trying to find a 1850 article under some scope. That would be cool to have on the phone, just someone go and scan all those papers and make a app, lol.
thank you

I imagine there would be too many licensing issues with the newspaper companies to make this a reality.
true but if it were a hombrew made for educational purpose and freedom of press to public act, then lets get something cooked up huh.. wink.. wink..

but at 99¢ i could see this app make easily a million dollars your right though theyll prob want some of that piggy bank. given them one penny per download, i don't think you'll have to pay any royalties to individuals in the articles seeing how they all ready been dead for decades, whats a newspaper worth nowadays anyway right but you are saying that you would have to get the permission still from lets says new york times to make it into a digital copy? that would suck because you know darn well that they arent doing anything with it anymore anyways except keeping all that good news in a library.

I like this idea
This sounds like something that maybe google's open book alliance may be interested in. Those old papers should be in the public domain. Depends on the copyright, I guess.
If it was made into an open source project I think it would take off
here is a site similar to the idea
chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/
and even this site could maybe use a touch of tapatalk style having the type of articles categories into years, types ex; murders, scams, business, ect... then at the end of all the parents have the article in a internel view or external view browser.

Um, doesn't it seem kinda odd that they are promoting a competitor for a job opening?? I don't see legit written anywhere on this.. I work for Pepsi, and don't see anyone giving a coke away for referring an employee.. Just my 2¢

Uhhhhh, how exactly are they promoting a competitor again? I checked out the openings, and the company Web page. The company is grounded and established dude.
So ur saying android and apple aren't competitors?? Again, just my 2¢

Oh that. The iPad thing. It's probably a 1st gen piece of crap anyways. Which is why they don't mind giving them away. They could be refurbished after cracking them open to get some Apple secrets. I mean a million explanations! We dunno.
I didn't really see that as promoting competition because the company is definitely benefiting more from getting the developer than care about an iPad.

this is a phishing scam. they really just want your personal info.
---------- Post added at 11:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:52 AM ----------
you have to create an account. they are banking that your contact email address will have the same password you use for your account on that site. they probably also try your name at various bank sites with the password you used.

So what? You have to create an account for alot of employers. Fred Meyer, McDonalds, a bunch of places. They use it to keep your user profile and sometimes to keep past applications. By the way, the way I know you don't know for sure is your use of the word "probably".
This is shady as shady gets. They're CLEARLY going above and beyond to sell you on why you should do this. They sound way to desperate. To each there own, but I wouldn't risk it...#SCAM.

okay sir. everybody else is wrong and you are right. this is totally legit. we should all give our personal info to some random site because every body knows that everything on the net is totally trustworthy.
not.
Check it. I'm not trying to prove anyone right or wrong. I just want people to cite what they say. Have some proof and all that. If it's a scam, then someone should report it to the browsers (IE, Mozilla, Google, etc.) so they can stop people from going to it. Let them check it out. Don't just burn on it to burn on it no matter how many "leading" points there are. The only way to know for sure is to go and do it. Someone use a fake email and name and see what happens to it once they "steal" it and whatnot. Feel me?
