Sounds like it could be a proximity sensor issue. Maybe it's somehow covered by your case or screen protector so the phone thinks it's in your pocket all the time? Just a thought.

Sounds like a software glitch. Bout all I can suggest is a factory reset, or flash the factory image. Was this a result of an ota or did you update it?
same happens to mine. It happens when the battery is low, but at "random" times too. It's like the AOD app in dozing.

I was not posting that I have an issue with aod, but rather help those with it to trouble shoot and resolve their issue.
Nope I don't use battery saver. Another issue I noticed that started with 8.1 is that my AOD will rotate to landscape sometimes. I've been having other issues recently too, may try for an RMA soon. My sketchy GPS is getting on my nerves

I know there's another auto brightness thread but I think my problem is different. I'll turn it on, leave the phone in standby for a while, and when I use the phone again I find the auto brightness doesn't have the check mark there anymore? Has anyone else noticed this?
I was wondering why my battery was draining so fast when I was using it. That's when I realized my setting was at full brightness but the Auto had become unchecked so it was running at 100 constantly without auto adjusting. I've used the 100/Auto checked on all my other Samsung devices dating back to the Note 2 and S3.
I'm thinking it's a software glitch which will hopefully be fixed in a future update. If it is, I'll live with it for now...
I actually had the same issue and I found that the issue was related to game recorder app I just uninstalled and now is fine
Interesting... I don't have any kind of recorder apps so I'm kind of at a loss as to what other app could cause that...

I'm suffering from this exact same issue. Very annoying because the auto brightness works well when it actually stays on.

For what it's worth, I started having other issues yesterday morning. When I first got the phone, and did the OTA, I did a factory reset as was widely recommended to do. Apparently it din't clear up everything.
What I ended up doing was, yesterday, I did another reset using the Samsung Smart Switch software. I backed up what I could, let it reset, and restored afterward. So far it's been 24 hrs and no issues.
I have the same problem with the auto brigthness with my galaxy S6 edge . but when i uninstall the car app from samsung its gone

Interesting.. car mode is the culprit? That's not the only bug in that app then. There's an option to auto close the app when the bluetooth connection is disconnected from the car.. it doesn't work for me.
But I'll just be sitting there doing something and if I'm in a dark room... WHAM I get blinded LOL...
I got a replacement today so I guess the saga continues...

I installed Samsung Switch for pc and did a backup for my edge.
I then did a factory reset.
Restored the backup from Switch.
I also un-installed a Go battery saver application.
Since then no more auto-brightness switching itself off.

I randomly realized my G4 wasn't rotating the screen anymore and I have since tried everything - factory resetting, calibrating the sensor (doesn't work) and even the banging phone on table method, none are successful.
This may indicate that it is a hardware issue but if I hold the phone landscape and open the camera the buttons do rotate, but if I rotate whilst already inside the app nothing changes so I'm not exactly sure what is going on. When I use the app CPU-Z to track the accelerometer value it stays static until I turn the screen off and move the phone a bit, when I turn it on the value changes again but stays still.
Any idea what the cause is??
does booting into safe mode make any difference (i know you said factory reset, but I'm curious).
Also, probably won't, but is there any difference whilst the phone is charging?
Throwing this out there. Did you debloat? On the Samsung models, if you uninstall the Hub app, rotation gets broken for some weird reason. I don't know what that would be on the G4, but maybe? Just a random guess.

I believe I did remove a few apps but since I factory reset and flashed a fresh image I believe they should be restored?

Not necessarily. I know a factory reset doesn't restore any previously removed apps, and flashing factory a fresh image depends on how it's flashed I've discovered. Only a CSC restores the phone to factory specs, while other methods didn't for me.

I think I recall seeing a debloat list somewhere. See if you can find it and compare what you've got. I'm not saying this is the problem, but it could be.

Yeah I found a few lists but they only have apps that are safe to remove and don't warn or mention possible ones that cause problems which I may have already removed

I had the exact problem a few weeks ago, thought my hardware was already flaking. Don't remember what I did to get it working, but it wasn't overly complex.. Rebooting didn't help, I think I pulled the battery, waited a bit, and then rebooted and then went to calibration from there.
Do you happen to have xposed installed by the way?

Hey thanks for your reply, I am trying now the battery pulling method, did you then calibrate through the sensor in display settings?
And yeah I do, hmm not sure if it stopped working after that actually.. but I remember after I flashed a fresh .kdz even without xposed it still doesn't work.

Yea would have been the calibration from the regular settings.
As for xposed, flashing a kdz will keep user data and settings.. It might have been gravitybox causing the issue for me, which if you uninstall that, reboot and reinstall it, might help. Same goes for any other modules you had enabled.

Yeah I have I don't even know there are signs that point towards it being a hardware or a software issue tbh.
Problem happened to me too. Started yesterday, sometimes worked, sometimes stuck on portrait.
Shutting down and pulling the battery for a few seconds seems to do the trick. It works properly now..
Have you been used apps which could calibrate the accelerometer before?
etc. some games that needs to be controlled by rotating the phone on its axis..

This problem happened on my g4 today...
Stock ROM?
LG 4 not rotating??
quick fix which worked for me was just take the battery out, wait 30 seconds, put back in switch on and problem solved...
hope this helps guys.... regards Steve
Hi All, not sure if it's just my handset but it has done it twice now so thought I'd see if others are experiencing the same issue and if there is a fix?
Phone fully charged, night mode on, wake up alarm on, go to sleep then wake up in the morning to realise you missed your alarm all because your phone was automatically switched off.
Becoming a issue now as people rely on alarms etc
Fix: maybe factory reset?!
Any feedback is much appreciated

cheers for the feedback
How did it go for you? Did it repeat?
I've got them too.. I did a factory reset.. BUT, I also changed Launcher.. Last time, I saw my device crashing. Launcher3 was the problem. (I think thats the Google Now Launcher right?) So i changed back to the stock launcher. No problems since then..

Hi guys,
I updated ota to OOS 4.0.1 at the weekend and on the whole, I'm pretty satisfied.
There is one little niggle that I have which is the ambient display waking seemingly without cause every few minutes, even when in airplane mode!
I suppose I could turn it off but I quite like the feature. Any ideas as to what could be happening?
For info, I'm running stock, never rooted.

There are no settings for ambient display so sadly there's nothing you can do. You can either turn off ambient display or get rid of ALL notifications. While there is anything, the screen will keep turning on. It's annoying, yes ...
Would be great if they made ambient display ignore low priority notifications (which persistent are). Maybe try raising a ticket with OnePlus and requesting a change in next update. Can't hurt

I kindda had similar issues. it was on 4.0 maybe. I'm not sure. then flashed 4.0.2, it's okay now.
I'm so fed up with these phones.
Is anyone else still having issues where when you go to make a call the screen goes black and you can't get out of it? No way to get into speakerphone mode, no way to hang up the call, no way to do a thing even after the call is finished.
This is with the June update which supposedly fix this issue.
If anyone has any insight I really appreciate it.
Never had the issue while on Oreo or while now on Android P DP3. Do you have a screen protector on it? Even pressing the power button doesn't wake the screen up while in call?

Very strange. It's replicable with every phone call? Any 3rd party dialer or display adjustment apps that you may be using that could affect it?

I know you probably already did this but make sure your screen is clean around the sensor area, I've had a false reading before when the top of my screen was dirty.

It seems it was TrueCaller causing the issues. Thanks for all the advice guys!

I have gone the whole day testing this issue.
I hard reset my phone 3 times and tested this.
On every hard reset and fresh start the proximity sensor works perfectly well, as soon as I install true caller, the dead screen issue starts.
But I use truecaller without any problems on my other 3 non pixel phone without any issues. This problem is only with the pixel 2 and pixel 2 XL.
There is no resolution as of now. Does anyone know of anyways to get this resolved ?
