Warranty Questions - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

I'm a T-Mobile customer but am looking at buying a used Verizon branded Note 8. I'm getting a good deal on it and will just flash either the T-Mo firmware or Unlocked firmware on it.
My question is, if something happens and I need to send it in for a warranty claim/exchange: who do I take it to? Verizon, since it's a Verizon device? Will they warranty it if I'm not a Verizon customer?
Do I send it to Samsung? Or do they only warranty the Unlocked devices?
I know when I had a Moto Droid 2, I sent it directly to Moto for a warranty repair, not Verizon. Didn't know if Sammy was the same way.

Where are you buying the device from? I'd try to put SquareTrade on it as best as I can since they're very good in being a form of insurance.

I'm buying it from an individual. It's about a month old. I'll check into Square Trade, but I'm asking about the factory warranty. Thank you

You pretty much answered your own question then, it's going to be through Samsung themselves as they are the manufacturer. Verizon won't really do a thing unless you have their mobile protection plan.

Cool. I'm okay with that. I'd prefer to have Sammy do the warranty. Just didn't want to get left with no warranty.

Samsung warranty for UK/Canadian phones used in USA?

Does anyone have any experience with Samsung USA's service department to get service for a phone purchased overseas? Since it seems us GSM users are being left to kick rocks when it comes to getting a Galaxy Nexus here, I'm wondering if it's possible to import one without the worry that I wouldn't be able to fix it if it broke or was shipped as a lemon.

I can tell you that Samsung wouldn't honour warranties for UK customers who had bought the grey-imported SLCD version of the Nexus S.

they will not warrant any phone purchased else where
This is my fear for importing the phone. Are there any other options? I really want to import this phone, but I'm very hesitant to spend around $700 and have no type of warranty.

i know with tmobile if you have there insurance they will replace it with a current equivalent. I do not see why samsung will not honor a warranty covered defect no matter where it is sold

ive bought alot of devices from overseas basically your localised companies will not do warranties, instead you have to contact in this case samsung UK get an RMA form then mail the device back to samsung uk and they do the repairs/replacement and send it back.
now as for uk stores some will handle this for you such as clove in that case you contact clove and they help you with the RMA process
i find it kinda strange no one has had to do this before or just says no warranty :\
having said that they will not honor the usual user damage instead you will have to pay to get that fixed (ie water damage or negligence)

Thanks for sharing this. This is good news, as I just want to be assured that if something w/ the phone goes bad, I'll have somewhere to send it to be repaired.

Warranty - Samsung US vs. Grey Market

If and when the GSM model becomes available for sale in the US, what will the experience be if I need to do a warranty exchange through Samsung US? Would it be much easier and quicker than purchasing it through grey market? (ie. Expansys, Negri, etc) I assume with both instances, if something were to happen with my device, it would take many weeks to get it back from repair. If something did happen, I could also go with a local phone repair shop I suppose.
Also, if the GSM model became available in the US through Best Buy, would their black tie warranty service be better than the above options?
I guess Im just used to T-Mobile service where they send you a warranty replacement before you send in your defective device!
Thanks!
If Best Buy starts carrying the GSM model I would get it there. Not that I like the place much (used to work there and couldn't wait to get out) but they honor the manufacturers warranty. This gives you a storefront to take the phone to in case it needs repair. Also they do offer a warranty that covers accidents due to drops and spills but if I recall correctly it cost too much and if you are careful or have it in a case you should be fine.

Thanks, yeah I wouldn't need accidental coverage, Im usually very good with phones. After a year of use on a phone I barely have any scratches on it. I just have had bad luck in the past with hardware defects, overheating etc.

I hear you. I've had two HTC phones, and both had parts fail on me. So I'm looking for a warranty as well.
I don't want to wait for a US release. Who knows when the GSM will be released. I haven't heard any rumors, so it could be awhile. I'm going to wait for the Canadian release (Dec 8th). Supposedly, you'll be able to buy it off contract for $650. And if anything happens to it, the wait time won't be as bad as shipping it back across the Atlantic.

I was thinking of the same plan of getting the Canadian version of the phone. But there is one little bitty set back, the two carriers getting it on the 8th (one if you count one is a MVNO) is Bell and Virgin. Both use CDMA. So that one is a no go. The Rodgers one coming next month will work however.

I checked out Bell and Virgin. Both have specs of the phone and they both have the frequencies necessary for Tmo US. Check it out (I would post the link but I'm too new).
I remember someone saying Canada ditched CDMA awhile ago.
I emailed Squaretrade and while I didnt get an exact answer, it sounds like if you are a UK customer buying from one of these establishments then you can buy a warranty and be covered. I didnt ask about US stores like Negri or Expansys. I'll send the question to them and report back.
Negri said when it first launched that they will honor the year warranty for you.
but i emailed them and asked about unlocking the bootloader and getting the warranty still and they said it's up to samsung UK.
so just remember, if you unlock the bootloader and you imported you may be screwed.

That statement is incorrect, bell and virgin are no longer using CDMA, i am a customer with bell and all new phones now use sim cards on the gsm network.

I've read that people have already confirmed that fastboot oem lock works fine on the Galaxy Nexus, so it really shouldn't be a problem.
From what I've heard if you purchased your phone from expansys-usa then all you need to do is send your phone to them and they will send it to Samsung for repairs. That's the reason I bought it from them.
If you check the "Expansys USA Now Shipping" forum, you'll see quite a bit of information on the Warranty situation. Just search the thread for Warranty.
OP: should you move the Warranty parts of that thread to this one so it is consolidated and easier to find?
If you bought from Handtec, they also said that you can send the phone back to them and they'll take care of the warranty process w/ Samsung UK as well, although it's obviously a little more costly to send to them than to Expansys-USA.

Good idea, I'll try compiling what I find either this afternoon or the weekend.
I bought mine from Expansys USA and they honor the one year Samsung manufacturer warranty. Just send it to them if there is an issue and they will send it to Samsung for repairs or warranty replacement. Yes, you may have to wait longer to get the phone back, but you still have a year warranty, and it's better to have this lovely device in my hands now than to wait until who knows when for the US to stock this officially somewhere. Go with Expansys, they shipped out right away and they know their products. Just my two cents.

If you buy "Grey Market" it is a roll of the dice---NO Warranty

If you happen to buy a Samsung product from a Grey market dealer they will give you nothing but a cold shoulder...period. I bought a S5 2 months ago on EBay and it shot craps and the seller (some jerks in Houston Texas just say screw you) and when I called Samsung USA they basiically were nice until they found out it wasn't and "official" USA import. I now own a $600 brick. The "international warranty is in Farsi, so you can imagine I won't be sending it back to Iran for service.

Looking to buy Samsung Nexus unlocked that is yakju

I am an ATT user. I'm thinking about buying the Samsung note and reselling to buy the Samsung Nexus. My question is where can I find a genuine Samsung nexus that is yakju with the best price?
So far the best I can find is this
https://negrielectronics.com/samsung-i9250-google-galaxy-nexus-black-unlocked.html
Not sure if this supports ATT 4G LTE. can anyone help?
There's isn't a US version as it's generic for the world. Get a GSM SIM-free handset from the UK/Europe and it'll be yakju
I have to use a sim card. Im with AT&T.
He means buy a phone that doesn't come with a sim card. Since AT&T and most other carriers use GSM networks, you can buy the Galaxy Nexus from Europe and put your AT&T sim in it, and have it work just fine in the US.

If you want a yakju handset then you're better getting it from the UK/EU as the vast majority of them are yakju out the box. Those that aren't can be changed using the stock Google image (same applies to handsets from other regions)

yakju just means you get the updates straight from Google right? Oh and even if I dont get a real yakju I can still change it, so I can still get the updates from google?
So if I could change it, then it would be smarter to get the cheapest nexus I can find then change it to yakju?
Yes that's correct. Although from a warranty standpoint it would be hard to go back to a non-yakju handset as there are only 2 stock images available - the yakju one and the mysid one (CDMA phones):

No. yakju doesn't mean anything about your warranty. You warranty will have to be handled between you and your importer when it comes to it because the warranty won't be valid in the US. You're counting on your importer to help you with the international Samsung warranty. But that's just a factory defect warranty. If you want accidental damage insurance, just get a 3rd party insurance plan after you buy the phone.
If your phone is returned back to stock yakju and has a locked bootloader, I'm fairly certain they have no reason to deny your warranty claim, even if it came to you with a yakju** build.
As covered earlier ITT, you can flash any nexus you get to yakju, so don't worry about where it comes from. It takes 5minutes and you'll have the exact same software has the UK models, and get OTAs right from Google.
If price and warranty support are important to you, I suggest Negri. They've got great CS and will certainly help with warranty claims if necessary.

I'm going to buy this

Will this work for US with ATT and will i have ATT new LTE speeds?
The only nexus with LTE is Verizon and that won't work on ATT at all.
Negri does not have yakju units at this time
A handy FYI. I just chatted with a rep over at Negri. They currently don't have 'yakju' units in stock and he was uncertainly when they will get more. So, if you order from Negri, you'll have to deal with what you get or flash the 'yakju' build. I still think I'm going to buy from Negri since it's WAY cheaper than order from a site in UK/Europe, but it's good to know what you're getting before hand.

T-mobile Galaxy note 2 Warranty in USA and world wide?

I just bought galaxy note 2 from T-mobile for 700$. I don't want a contact. Ao, just the phone and I wanna use 4G month to month plan. I have a few questions.
1. The warranty in USA for T-mobile galaxy note2, as I don't have a contact with T-mobile. Do I still have a 1 year warranty? Is it warranty from T-mobile or Samsung itself? I want to confirm this as the sale told me that I have to deal with Samsung myself in case of claiming for warranty. Is this true? I heard that galaxy note 2 international version is not covered by US warranty.
2. T-mobile Galaxy note 2 US version is covered by world wide warranty from Samsung like international version?
3. Can this phone be unlocked for any carrier from any country? I will have to move back to Thailand. I am not sure that I can put Thai SIM card in or not. Please confirm this for me.
Thank you for the reply and response.
I appreciate every comment and thank you so much.

It's easy to get an unlock code from T-mo customer service especially since you are not on contract. Give them a call. Once unlocked your T-mo phone will work with any GSM carrier in the world.
I think Samsung warranty works only in the country where it is meant to be sold. All Samsung units have a region or country code. Even if they are all international versions, they have different codes especially if you bought the units from 3rd party retailers, online etc. Warranty will still apply but you might need to ship the unit back to the country of origin where it will be serviced. So T-mo units will only be serviced under warranty in the US, not in Samsung service centers in Thailand. You can have it serviced there but might have to pay fees.
---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:26 PM ----------
Manufacturer's warranty is almost always to be coordinated with the manufacturer.
T-mo's responsibility is only up to the 14 day return period. (30 days in CA). Malfunctions within that period, just have the phone replaced by T-mo.
Physical damage is not covered by warranties, rather by insurance.
Call T-mo have them unlock it, and bam!

[Q] SquareTrade Discount?

Before someone says 'search', you should know that the search function isn't working on XDA right now.
I was browsing SquareTrade's website and came across the fact that they have a specific page for Samsung Galaxy devices. It seems that those warranties are cheaper than the regular smartphone warranties. http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
It's only $99 down and $99 deductible. That seems like a good deal, since it covers accidental as well as water and mechanical.
Has anyone used SquareTrade before? Was it worth it, and what was the process for getting a replacement like?

that is the same deal you get if you go through amazon for squaretrade. I was going to get it, but it does not cover lost/stolen which is what I am worried about more than dropping and breaking it
When I found out that Jump through t-mobile came with insurance I just jumped on that. - no pun intended. A lot of people use squaretrade - including costco and a friend of mine has no problems. Search them on Amazon and read their reviews...they have good reviews.
Is 99 for a two year insurance plan?
does anyone know if squaretrade covers phones that have been rooted/software modified? like, does the phone have to still have it's original manufacturer's warranty intact or does that not matter here? will they force you to try to use the samsung warranty first, or does their warranty just work in lieu of the samsung one?

Yes, that's for two years, which seems to be a really good deal for me. When I want to sell my phone next year (when the next Note comes out), a warranty will be a big selling point.

I think that is something that manufacturers do more than 3rd party warranty providers. I don't think SquareTrade cares if you root your phone. It might come into play if something happens like you brick your phone and ask for a replacement, but i'm not sure. I'll have to google it and see if anyone has said anything about that possibly being a problem.

The only problem I have found with Squaretrade is that you can only replace your phone once during the 2 year plan. I've read it on multiple reviews.

Honestly, I've never broken/lost/damaged my phone in any way that it would need to be replaced. So I hope that one time would be all I would need. And even one time would save my $500+ to repurchase the phone.
I'm glad they give you 30 days from the date of purchase to get the warranty, cause I am all tapped out right now just from buying the phone itself.

Haha agreed!
Have you looked at NegriCare?
It's 79 for two years and 50 down for a replacement. I'm not sure how good of reviews it has gotten and I'm hesitant but it's an option.

for as many sales as Negri gets...i doubt there would be a big issue with their extended warranty
I'm also hoping for a coupon before the 30 days are passed. You can also request a prorated refund if you don't have the phone anymore within the 2 years.
I bought Samsung galaxy note 3 T-mobile from Swappa, I will unlock it and use it with AT&T.
In this case, will square trade covers above device. What all details I need from seller to get Square Trade protection plan on this device?
Thanks in advance!!

Don't think it's an option in private sales. Otherwise we'd see it more in certain forums like Craigslist ..But I could be wrong..

Yeah, I had originally looked at them. They just changed their insurance provider and the terms. Before, it was a higher price and deductible, but you got a new phone when you made a claim. Now, with the lower price and deductible, you have to send the phone off to be repaired. I'm just not sure about the new insurer. SquareTrade has been around for a while and I know that they are decent, so I may go with them.

I'm pretty sure that SquareTrade requires a receipt or invoice of some kind as proof of a newly purchased phone in order to get a warranty. The warranty itself is transferable if you later sell the phone, but to get a new one I think you need the proof of purchase.

Just got my Squaretrade warranty today. Didn't have to give a receipt or even put in the IMEI of the device.

Make sure you log into your account with them and then look at your MyPlans to make sure they say they have all they need.
