Hi, I tried to search but couldn't find anything about this problem.
The other day I was trying to record video at a kid's birthday party, and the video was somewhat long, around 6-7 minutes. Without any warning, the video stopped recording and went straight to the home screen. I tried to play the video file, but it shows up as a gray box on the phone and doesn't play on either my phone or my computer. I tried various video players.
This happened to me again, I went up to wine country and was taking a video from my car mount of the scenery as I drove down the windy roads. I stopped one video at around 5-6 minutes, the second one I didn't stop it that soon and the phone went to home screen again. Video was unplayable, same as last time.
I tried to replicate the issue recording videos, tried to push the home screen or any other buttons to replicate the issue - all times the video saved if you stopped the recording one way or another. I even tried to send myself an email to see if notifications could stop the video, didn't do anything. I recorded till around 7 minutes, and the phone went to home screen around 6:52. Same result as before.
All the files that were unplayable weren't unusually large, around 300-355 megs I believe. I'm running the stock 8gb card, and I'm rooted with baked snack 9.6. Free space on card was around 3-4 gigs each time, free space on phone roughly 80 mb. I'm using mpeg-4, all other videos I record are fine.
So is there anyways to fix this problem? It's kind of hard to always stop the phone at the right time to avoid this, and I'm wondering what's causing it in the first place. Could it be that the phone's ram is reaching capacity?
Hopefully the powers that be don't do a DMCA takedown on my youtube video, but I've uploaded an example of a video playback glitch that regularly occurs on my device. Does anyone else see this on their Note 10.1 2014 edition? Very annoying... SM-P600, 32GB, USA version, MK1 firmware. Not rooted.

So far, I must be in the less than 1% that have experienced this problem...
you didn't include any info on the clip. audio codec, video codec, bitrate, profile, etc. what videomplayer are you using. is the glitch repeatable at that exact frame each time?
You can be sure that when somebody else had such problems, you will already find it here in the forum. So, no, never have such an issue. Also not over the network.
And, as mad squabbles already wrote: For more we need much more information.

The movie was downloaded from Samsung Hub to the device. HD quality. The videoplayer was the only one that plays these movies (to my knowledge): The stock Samsung video player. The glitch is not repeatable at exact locations. I can go back and rewatch the same clip and it will not appear, which says to me that there is not a data corruption problem. It seems like an I/O or "interrupt" problem to me. I've run Androbench on the device and I get as good as or better than the Anandtech benchmarks for the device.
This type of glitch occurs on any kind of move I play, including those I put on the device (mp4, etc). For the ones I have put on the device manually (not through Google Play or the Hub), I've tried the following players: Dice, MX, Archos, and the stock player.
In all other respects, the device works flawlessly: no lag to speak of (except for the occasional stutter on the notifications pull-down, which seems to be the norm). It doesn't crash randomly and battery life seems normal (no less than 7-10 hours of screen on time, ~4% drain overnight. The only thing that I have that probably isn't too common is that I do have MDM software installed (MaaS360) so that I can sync with my employers Exchange servers using TouchDown.

Normally I would expect that you have an background process which got more attention from Android then your video player. This can be anything. Did you have this issue also after a directly after a restart?

Yes, I have the issue immediately after a restart.

I just removed MaaS360 and rebooted. The glitch remains...
Factory resetting now. Will report back when I get it back online. I'll test video before installing any third party apps...
And.....it's still glitching after a factory reset.
First thing I noticed was that this scene is similar to super Mario live action movie
Second, this glitch can happen when you read from a slow SD card or can be reading and writing at same time, for example downloading from torrent or installing apps and playback movies from same location.

Indeed. However, movies are playing from the internal memory without any other significant activity going on. (no D/Ls, etc. just normal device behavior that is native to the OS) going on in the background. I also have played video in airplane mode...

and the media scan which have issues with scanning some files. Maybe you check which processes are running in the background?

There is always *some* process running in the background... I have cleared all other applications while playing a movie, but really, should this be necessary? (Problem still remains) I've tried playing movies without any non-stock apps installed. Problem occurs. I've tried freezing as much bloatware as possible without rooting before installing third part apps. Problem occurs.
What I would like to explicitly know is this: has anyone rented a movie from Google Play, played at least 30 minutes straight while doing nothing but watching the movie, and saw any stuttering whatsoever during that 30 minutes. I can live with it if it is a suboptimal experience due to firmware (I'm on MK1, btw) if this is "normal" for this device. I could only hope that it would be fixed in a future firmware update if that was the case. However, I have a strong feeling that if I sent this in to Samsung, they'll fiddle with it for 10 minutes, see that it "seems" to be fine (except for this glitch, the device performs completely as-expected for an Android device), then it be returned to me with no action taken. I can live without this thing for a few weeks, but it will be extremely annoying if nothing is actually done about it. Given that this glitch is not reproducible on command, I fear it will be an ongoing thorn in my proverbial behind. Unfortunately, my return window has expired or else it would go back in an instant.
Used Kies to download and reinstall the MK1 firmware in case one of the OTA updates were corrupted. No joy. Still stutters. Samsung Live Chat help of no use. I expect a call or email from them telling me to send it in in the next 3-5 business days unless someone else states that they have the same tablet and sees this problem too, possibly confirming that it is a firmware/device combination issue.
Mmm this is weird, I have no problem with video playback (any supported format by this device)
I have no MK1 but MJ2 and maybe media scanner is working hard in background
Are you using external SD card and / or have many pictures?

MX player shows glitches as well on movies that it can actually play. i.e., MX player doesn't play nicely with rented (digitally rights managed) movies from Google, which is the primary problem. Perhaps Android tablet users just don't rent movies all that much?

Media scanner isn't working hard in the background as far as I can tell. No to the two questions.
Is anyone haveing the problem where you open the camera app and it lags big time? It lags in both camera and video. Then when i do take a video it's choppy and bad quality. Also, if you hit the video button is it stopped to start recording right away or should it flip over to video like other Samsung devices do? Mine starts recording right away.

Yes, I too see the lag.
there is lag elsewhere on the phone as well.

I only notice the lag on the phone, but also sometime in Chrome when I'm on this site. Is your lag bad enough where you can't even take a good video?
yes, it lags to the point that I think my phone locks-up.
I read somewhere where someone said that if you disable your SD card, the issue goes away. Try it, unmount your SD card.

I don't know it just started working again. But if it happens again I'll try to unmount the SD card. Do you know how to get to the video settings? Does the video automatically record in 4K? That will take up a lot of space.
yes, i think by default it is at 4k video. 16 megs when you click on setting while under camera.

Yes, I've noticed that as well on mine. To a point, where the phone almost stop responding when camera is on. I don't think it's hardware related at all, I could be wrong, I'm thinking more like a bug in the software. One easy way to get out the lag for me is to press the power button to turn of screen then turn back on, while on lock screen, swipe up the camera widget. That got rid of the overall lag and lockup for me. I know it will come back soon or later, just don't know what trigger it.
Do you guys get lag from the front camera? When you move, it's not in perfect sync. It also seems to give you a Jay Leno chin.
My phone is stock and updated, purchased day 1 of release. I have videos set to record in 4k but after a few minutes use the phone starts to get pretty warm, few minutes more and its hot and then maybe a few mins more (say 6-10) it will lock up. The only thing I can do is reset the phone....
Does anyone else get this problem using the stock camera app ?

Are you running out of storage space by chance? I read that 4k videos are limited to 5 minutes but I've not tested that myself.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app
Loads of space as got the 32gb version of the phone. Its not complaining I'm out of space and I use google photos so just clears photos and videos once uploaded (it pops up and asks when I am low).
The heat lock up issue is the problem, everything else is working fine for me.
Hi All,
1st time on here. Puzzled to this problem, struggling for a solution.
When recording video under water (under 1m) and its great, however when the phone exits the water, the video automatically stops recording.
Is there a way round this? I'm stumped on this.
Any help would be great, thank you
The phone doesn't have this functionality built in, it shouldn't happen.
Have you tried rebooting it?

Hi. Its a common problem when your using a phone in water. The touchscreen goes crazy due to the water. There are a few solutions to this.
1. The method i use. I have turned on volume buttons for clicking pics or video recording in camera settings. after doing that i installed touch lock. it basically locks your touch screen so that the water does not make certain parts of your screen get pressed and stop the recording. so start recording using volume buttons and then lock the touchscreen. ur recording wont stop.
2. download a spycam software like scos that can record videos when screen is off or make it take pics in interval. turn it oon and turn of screen.
3. Thr are apps made for underwater recording. but the good ones have only picture taking ability. some of the others arent that great while taking pics.
i had this issue with my a7. it would be fine for first 10 mins. but after that when i start recording n go underwater it would stop. i tried all 3 and im most comfortable with 1st one as i prefer using the stock camera app.
