Hello,
So, I'm wondering if there is a good app out there that clears the system cache as well as cache from applications? On my S7 Edge, there was a cleaner built into the settings under storage. There isn't anything on this pixel, and assistant for android doesn't actually clean anything out now either (guessing it's not allowed in Oreo?). I hate to go through app by app and do this manually every now and then. The reviews of apps I found on the store were hit or miss. I even downloaded Norton's cleaner, and it didn't actually clear the app cache like it said it does.
Please and thank you!

They removed the option since Nougat I think. I used Norton Cleaner on my 5X and it did a good job clearing the app cache. What didn't it clear for you?

I checked some apps before I ran it, it said it cleaned out some stuff, but it didn't look like enough. Anyway, I checked the same apps after I ran it, and nothing was cleared. Is there a setting somewhere I'm supposed to change? I looked around but didn't see anything. Uninstalled it this morning.

Hmm. Just gave it a try and look like it gets app cache for some but not all apps. Like YouTube looks like it was cleared but Instagram wasn't. [emoji848]

Yeah, I checked Facebook and Messenger, nada there. Those two are a couple of the biggest offenders too.
I haven't really paid a ton of attention to how efficient it is, but I like HTC Boost+. It's got a pretty interface, pretty versatile options, and I trust that HTC has made some decent software.

Just gave that app a try and it's seeing different cache numbers as well. The app sees Instagram with 99 MBs and app info for Instagram shows 428 MBs. Maybe all these cache cleaning apps aren't viewing the right data?

Is there anything wrong switching back and forth between ART VS DALVIK?
IT seems that some games won't operate properly in one or the other.
That said I notice that I cannot install real racing 3 from the play store. In fact if I search for it. It does not show up. If I click a direct link for it it says my device not supported.. Any ideas?

Maybe the game doesn't officially support our resolution.
For some apps that don't want to install via play store I install them through Amazon app store, but that's only if they are also available on there because it doesn't do some of these "officially" supported checks.

That's what I'm thinking too.
Anyway to my origal question. Is there any issues switching back and forth

No issue at all. Have smashed b/w dalvik and ART several times. Finally on ART, no lag, amazing battery life.
OK cool thanks. So save to experiment
Curious, I switched to ART once and after every time the phone was rebooted it came up as one app was being optimized, anyone else had this happen?

This doesn't happen to me on my G3 or Nexus 7. Both of them only upgraded the apps once, so I have no idea what's going on with your phone.

Same here. After switching to ART, every time the phone is rebooted, it optimizes apps.
ART runs better for me.
Dalvik should have better compatibility.
I know some games simply don't work with ART, they FC immediately. Developers probably won't update it until L is out for a while.
Since the HTC 10 comes with the Boost+ app preloaded, I'm curious to see whether you all are keeping it enabled or disabling this app. Do you find it make a beneficial impact?
I disabled all it's features except the 1080p gaming mode which is nice for battery life.

Is this Boost+ app something Verizon may have removed from the Verizon version of the phone? I don't seem to have it--at least not as an app I can find with that name.
Edit: It turns out it was not on the phone, but I found it in the Play Store, and was able to install it that way.
Disabled Smartboost because it closed my apps when I wanted to use them.
One feature of Boost is that it can lock an application by enforcing use of finger print scanner or pin code per application. So if you don't want someone to pick up your phone and open your Facebook, enable the function in Boost+
I'm not seeing any option to use fingerprints to lock/unlock apps with the Boost+ app, it only offers the option to use a pattern. Anyone else seeing this? Is this the only method Boost+ uses for locking/unlocking apps? If so, seems awfully dumb and disappointing that they won't let you use fingerprints instead.
EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. There was an update needed for the Boost+ app for this particular feature to be available. (Not sure why, though, the Play Store app didn't notify me there was an update for the Boost+ app since it came installed on my phone out of the box...)
For those of you that have been using the phone for a few days, have you found a difference (either positive or negative) with enabling the "Smart Boost" feature in the Boost+ app?

I've had it for 6 days now and nope, no difference at all on my side (in terms of battery life and performance) so I keep it off. Why bother killing background apps with 4GB of RAM ?
By Android design, smart boost is a bad app.
You don't need to clean ram on Android, this isn't Windows. It'll end up doing as reported above, closing good apps instead of bad ones.
Android memory management is designed to load Ram for better performance.
Only good features are cache cleaning and app lock.

One thing that I don't understand.
The cache cleaning feature in the Boost+ app, is it the same as "wipe cache partition" in the recovery menu and is it really necessary to delete the cache ?
I thought that cache is good because with it apps open quicker.
Hey everyone,
My personal experience with this app is this:
For some reason my phone was little slow now, so I activated the the smart boost option and it started flying. Got fast(back to normal).
so basically.. the app it self is useful in terms of decluttering your phone and make it operate faster.. One thing it fails to mention is that clearing cache and memory means resetting all the apps to default. which means constant request to allow or deny apps access to contacts, location etc.

Yeah after finding it out I deleted it. there seems to be other issues with Nougat, but at least deleting this reduced my stress level in debugging this new update...

Just an update, the App seems to work fine, the reset of app permission settings is due to an encrypted SD Card not formatted after a wipe.
I formatted the SD Card, copy existing content back into the card and now resets do not reset app permission.
I then reinstalled Boost+ App and it seems to work fine without resetting app permission.

I am leaving it on now, I have not been able to test it as much due to the resetting app permissions. I'll be able to test it now though. So i'll let you guys know if i find it not as worthy as I'd hope.
Would you guys recommend Boost, or do you think Greenify is the better way to go for battery life?

The issue with the permission is not to do with the boost + app.
I have the boost + add still working and it's okay.
my phone is over 2 years old. so I change the battery and now it lasts more than a day!

Yup, more power consumption plus the fact that loading apps fresh each time provides worse user experience (slower operation).
There is absolutely no reason to clear RAM on powerful modern devices. Even I - the person that always kept clearing recents and even using memory cleaners on older devices - got used to keeping everything in RAM. And I'm happier than ever

Yes, but it depends on how frequently you are opening and closing apps. If you don't use an app all that often, there is no harm in clearing it.

I don't intend to do it constantly but want to have it available when I DO want to do it. For example, If I use Facebook once a day, I would rather not have it constantly running in the background.

It seems the "clear ram" feature actually hibernates apps. i.e it does a "Force Stop" in the Android app settings. This is behavior I want to preserve battery, particularly for apps I don't use all that often.

FB and similar apps are a perfect example of why it's a terrible idea to clear RAM - ever try force closing it? It always re launches itself without fail, even with root and apps like Greenify
Well, if you don't want to to kill apps often, you don't need a shortcut. It's just 2 taps away anyways (recents > kill).
Natively you can't get a shortcut. Maybe could be done with Tasker or something similar, but I'm not sure.
After all apps in RAM don't really consume power so you won't see any benefits if you do force stop stuff that you don't use often. The difference is negligible, there are a lot more factors that make much bigger difference.

I was using Pure Nexus but decided Sunday that I wanted to go back to stock. I wiped data and Fastboot flashed the March Factory image. When everything was done setting up I was left with a long search bar and a missing weather widget, anyone seen this before? I've gone through all the Google app settings and haven't been able to fix it.

Thanks buddy. I was asking a general question. I've been doing this since the G1 days. I've been doing trial and error with apps and yes safe mode worked but after deleting FB messenger which I thought was the issue but after 2 days of glorious battery and no Google play issues it creeped back up. So here I am again deleting a handful more apps to remedy the situation. Before 8.1 everything was amazing. Since then it's been non stop on and off drain.

Would have been great to have all that in your OP, Mate. Including I'm not going to root. You're obviously not a rookie, and having been around so long, you should also know full well by now how to pose a proper question with the appropriate background. Just have a quick look at your OP again Mate. Best of luck.
Can't really help you if you are not rooted
By default, any stock android would eventually become a battery drainer.
You need to tame and have full control of your phone,
Best of luck though
