It's a shadow next to the power button on the right. I just noticed it when I going through new wallpapers. Now that I see it, it's bugging me.
Is it dead pixels? Pixels not operating at full brightness?
That's definitely annoying, I wouldn't want that on my new device.. I would wait a little bit if not gone RMA before they have some refurbished one..
Mine doesn't do that...
More info on when this occurs: I only noticed it when "Night Mode" turned on in the evening. Then the shadow appears near the power button. This doesn't happen without Night Mode.

Return for sure
Ya, definitely a manufacturing defect. I would return it for a sure.
The same...but worse
Mine is even worse. I have a gray band and a bump in both night mode and regular mode. So pissed. I don't see an image upload option here or I would share a screenshot.

I don't know whether it is hardware-related or software related (or why you pointed that out), I just know that it is persistent, very obvious, and it even shows up when the phone is restarting and the screen is completely white. It's obviously an issue with the phone that needs to be addressed. I would add that it was immediately apparent during initial setup, so that means that QC completely missed or ignored it.
EDIT: and when I said "screenshot," I was referring to a photo taken of the screen by another phone.

Edit: Just realized you aren't OP. The title is "screen defect?" so I was answering the question. Either way, my point still stands. It's most likely a screen defect and should be returned.

As you correctly noted, your response "was the question rhetorical?" (which you have since deleted) was misplaced, as I am not the OP and I did not ask that question. In addition, in one post you have said "it isn't a hardware defect" and in the next post you have added, "It's most likely a screen defect." A screen defect IS a hardware defect. In any event, your comments have contributed nothing useful to this thread. Troll much?

My post stated that if a screenshot can reproduce it, it isn't a hardware defect. I doubt a screenshot will reproduce the issue and it was mostly meant in jest. Sometimes people forget that a screenshot will not pickup something that isn't being rendered by the software. You misunderstood my response and immediately got defensive. I think it is a hardware issue and should be returned. I've been saying that from the beginning of this thread. I also edited my comment when I realized you weren't the OP, mentioned the fact publicly, and changed my response, so I'm not sure why you think I deleted something. I am thinking maybe you don't know what trolling is?
I also have a screen defect which is why I am RMA'ing my device. This showed up after a day of using the phone initially.

The display on my TP2 appears to have a liquidy substance underneath the cover/plastic top.. I can only see it when looking at it from a certain angle and it moves around when I touch it.. Is this the result of a defective display? I've had this phone since..late august, early september, and noticed it awhile ago.. never thought anything of it.. Just wondering if i could get a replacement or something, as i have insurance..
ill look for a picture that shows what im talking about. but can someone tell me what it is, if it will affect my screen, and if i can get a replacement?
thanks.
If it looks liquidy and moves around when you touch it, it sounds like... liquid. You may want to check the water indicator underneath the battery to make sure it isn't activated. If it's a solid pink/red color, your warranty won't cover a repair or replacement.

From what I've heard and seen, it's caused by a manufacturing defect on early models. The only way to fix it is to replace the touch screen. I don't know how the HTC service centres are in the US, but in the UK they are very, very helpful and replaced it free of charge within a week.

I've searched all the burn in threads and don't see anything like this. I use my phone as an alarm clock on a dock; a couple of days ago I noticed what looked like little yellow squares on white pages. It was driving me nuts so I took a screenshot and nothing was there; I used another phone and took a picture to email to myself. When I enlarge it I can clearly see it is clock numbers. The phone is still under warranty and I opened a ticket for repair but can't get a clear answer from the service personal; does anyone know if this is covered under warranty?

I use the genuine Google dock and the Alarm clock moves around the screen thus avoiding the burn in you have, just a thought in case they replace your phone and you dont want it to happen again

Unfortunately not. This will not go away usually. The image is "burned in". The technical term for it is "Image Persistence".
Just Google for a 10h white YouTube video and run it for awhile, it should be fine then. No need to send it in..

That has got to be the most severe case of burn-in I've seen yet. I'm curious as to the results of the 10h white video. Be sure to report back!

Hi,
I bought my Nexus 5X in December, and i was using it with the stock software from Google (locked BL, unmodified, unrooted)(6.0.1 MMP29Q) because i didn't have USB C-A cable and everything was fine.
2 Days ago, i got the cable, and i unlocked the bootloader, rooted the device, and flashed a custom rom (namely Cataclysm)(6.0.1 MMP29P), and everything was still fine, but today, i was shooting some pictures with the camera, and i noticed a black dot in the view, i thought it's dust on the lens, and i tried wiping the lens (from the outside) but it didn't work.
I did some research on the issue, and i found out that many Nexus device users have faced the same problem with previous devices (Nexus 4, Nexus 5), and most feedback says that the problem appeared after updating the camera app, or updating the android version, but there's no actual solution to the issue, since most of the users chose to get a replacement phone.
Demo of the problem:

I posted the images in full size to notice that the dot isn't completely black, it's kinda transparent, on the blue wall, you notice that you can still see the pattern of the paint through the dot.
Things i tried
Wiping the lens from the outside
Uninstalling the camera app updates
Changing the resolution of the camera
Installing another camera app (Open Camera)
Unrooting/Flashing Stock Factory Image
Also, when i zoom in the dot goes out of the screen, it moves with the zoom.

Thanks mate, but i'm keeping that as a last resort (as mentioned in the post, the phone will have to cross countries to be replaced, and that will take a lot of time).
I still have hope in finding a solution, or for a miracle to happen and the dot to disappear suddenly just like it appeared.
and i still have till next December for the warranty to end, so i'll hope a little longer for now

If all else fails you could try to find just the camera flex cable, probably has more attached to it, and either replace it yourself or have someone do that for ya. They aren't too hard to replace but haven't opened this phone up yet.
I had the same thing happen to my N4. Although I couldn't see it, there was some kind of speck on the camera lens. I never did anything about it because it was outside of warranty, and I didn't want to open the phone up.
I returned my first 5x for the same reason, although I couldn't see it on the picture yet. This time, I could physically see the speck of dust just outside of the range of the lens. I didn't want to risk it migrating into view just after the warranty expires.
Most likely, it's coincidence that it happened at the time that you flashed a ROM. If you want to be 100% sure, go back to stock to see if it's still there. The issue that you were referring to that happened to others was more of a black bar, which happened to my N4 if I used the most updated camera app.
Obviously this is getting RMA'ed, but I want to get a sense of whether this is a total fluke or a problem anyone else is experiencing:

Yes, I've been experiencing this too. Every time I squeeze the phone for assistant it flickers and the screen goes black. I'm currently in the process of troubleshooting with Google, but I assume will be a hardware issue and need an RMA.
Edit: So after going back and forth with Google Support, they're having me RMA it.

Glad you're doing that. It's an RMA, for sure. I was just trying to get a sense of how common it is. I'm seeing a lot of complaints about blue tint shift and screen burn-in/image retention, but very few people have said "I have this weird flashing screen thing."
I guess that's a good thing (that it's not that common an occurrence)?

I don't think anyone seeing this issue is going to see it go away. I was just trying to determine how common it is. Seems almost no one has this issue. Other issues, plenty. This issue seems rare, though (fortunately).
I got a new one from Google. Everything is working properly now.

On the subject of screen flashing. Go into safe mode and see if the issue persists. From what I understand, it is a 3rd party app issue causing this. If it still has an issue it could be a hardware defect.
Safe Mode: After the Google logo shows on your screen, when the animation starts, press and hold your device's Volume down button. Keep holding it until the animation ends and your device starts in safe mode. You'll see "Safe mode" at the bottom of your screen. Restart the phone without holding any buttons to get out of it.

Just got off of a support chat with Google and went into safe mode and that fixed it. Wasn't happening in safe mode and when I restarted it out of safe mode it's not happening anymore. The support person said it's not a hardware issue but it is a 3rd party app issue if it's not happening in safe mode. I am going to make sure that all of my apps are updated and then give it another day since I just got it this morning.
In the video... Looks like whoever built the phone caused some physical damage. That's not normal bleeding in the corner from light. Looks like an LCD when it's pressed too hard and breaks
It is more defective unit. I would just return it and get new replacement. My brother had the same flickering on his galaxy s8. He contacted to Samsung customer service and they replaced it. They told him that unit might got damaged during shipping. The package could be dropped hard and damage the screen inside the unit. It could happen to anybody. I hope you Google will replace it. Good luck. . I have my google pixel 2 xl and no issues with screen.
i am having issues with screen flickering (looks like a selfie flash) when i lock the screen - i used google chat support, after presenting my case with rep for 30 minutes, i was issued an RMA. i asked the rep if this is an isolated case, and they said that the replacement should address the issue.
feels like a beta launch and they are trying to make the beta testers whole now.
anyways, google support was good, now waiting for my replacement.
They are RMAing my phone because it was still flashing the screen after a factory data reset and was doing it on the setup screen.

Yeah, it probably was some kind of physical damage, maybe before packaging? The packaging itself was quite sturdy, so it probably wasn't an issue during shipping. The replacement phone seems good so far...
this is physical damage, probably from shipping, return it. its a gonner. looks like it was tossed around in a cement truck for its shipping method.
Got my new Fold 3 today, set it up and immediately noticed that something was wrong with the screens, both large and small. With certain apps such as Google Maps, Samsung Browser, Chrome, Amazon, etc., I have spots on the screen that seem to get stuck and merge into lines when scrolling. This happens on both screens when opened and closed. I've tried Wipe Cache, Factory Reset, and a few other options. Seems to be a hardware issue. Probably a GPU failure if certain hardware acceleration is required. In some apps it doesn't happen at all like Firefox, Youtube, Samsung Gallery, Facebook.
Anyone with the same problem?

Out of the box it should work.
It left the factory like that more than likely
Factory resets solve little* and worse the issue is likely to reoccur if the root cause isn't found.

Well saying things in favour of Samsung does not mean that one is a Samsung executive, and complaints about Samsung doesn't always come from an Apple executive, or an Xiaomi executive. It is exaggerated.
Actually in my opinion folding phones are only a proof of concept and still a long way to become, reliable, and durable, to use. Also it doesn't really brings a ton more than normal phones, considering that they are just pocketable tablets with a less durable screen and less battery life. Sorry to pry but could we get a tl;Dr of what those rights are? Could be useful for people in those regions if they have problems and find this thread.
Although regardless of your regional rights OP wants a working phone right? So returning it as soon as possible makes sense. Iirc in the UK returns are possible up to 7 years later but the sooner you do it the more likely a manufacturer is to help without questions.
