Obviously this is getting RMA'ed, but I want to get a sense of whether this is a total fluke or a problem anyone else is experiencing:
I'm having issues with my screen flashing when I turn it off with the power button. It only flashes once and is intermittent. This YouTube video is from someone else but this is what's happening.

Had this issue with mine when the battery got below 20% for the first time. After charging overnight the line went away. Still getting it RMA'd.

Yes, I've been experiencing this too. Every time I squeeze the phone for assistant it flickers and the screen goes black. I'm currently in the process of troubleshooting with Google, but I assume will be a hardware issue and need an RMA.
Edit: So after going back and forth with Google Support, they're having me RMA it.

Glad you're doing that. It's an RMA, for sure. I was just trying to get a sense of how common it is. I'm seeing a lot of complaints about blue tint shift and screen burn-in/image retention, but very few people have said "I have this weird flashing screen thing."
I guess that's a good thing (that it's not that common an occurrence)?

I don't think anyone seeing this issue is going to see it go away. I was just trying to determine how common it is. Seems almost no one has this issue. Other issues, plenty. This issue seems rare, though (fortunately).
I got a new one from Google. Everything is working properly now.

On the subject of screen flashing. Go into safe mode and see if the issue persists. From what I understand, it is a 3rd party app issue causing this. If it still has an issue it could be a hardware defect.
Safe Mode: After the Google logo shows on your screen, when the animation starts, press and hold your device's Volume down button. Keep holding it until the animation ends and your device starts in safe mode. You'll see "Safe mode" at the bottom of your screen. Restart the phone without holding any buttons to get out of it.

Just got off of a support chat with Google and went into safe mode and that fixed it. Wasn't happening in safe mode and when I restarted it out of safe mode it's not happening anymore. The support person said it's not a hardware issue but it is a 3rd party app issue if it's not happening in safe mode. I am going to make sure that all of my apps are updated and then give it another day since I just got it this morning.
In the video... Looks like whoever built the phone caused some physical damage. That's not normal bleeding in the corner from light. Looks like an LCD when it's pressed too hard and breaks
It is more defective unit. I would just return it and get new replacement. My brother had the same flickering on his galaxy s8. He contacted to Samsung customer service and they replaced it. They told him that unit might got damaged during shipping. The package could be dropped hard and damage the screen inside the unit. It could happen to anybody. I hope you Google will replace it. Good luck. . I have my google pixel 2 xl and no issues with screen.
i am having issues with screen flickering (looks like a selfie flash) when i lock the screen - i used google chat support, after presenting my case with rep for 30 minutes, i was issued an RMA. i asked the rep if this is an isolated case, and they said that the replacement should address the issue.
feels like a beta launch and they are trying to make the beta testers whole now.
anyways, google support was good, now waiting for my replacement.
They are RMAing my phone because it was still flashing the screen after a factory data reset and was doing it on the setup screen.

Yeah, it probably was some kind of physical damage, maybe before packaging? The packaging itself was quite sturdy, so it probably wasn't an issue during shipping. The replacement phone seems good so far...
this is physical damage, probably from shipping, return it. its a gonner. looks like it was tossed around in a cement truck for its shipping method.

Hello,
The purpose of this thread is to seek assistance with what has become a major issue.I have a rooted EVO 4g device(for several months) and I am not sure as to how it exactly happened but my phone now complete commands by itself. For example when in typing screen,it automatically starts writing letters, when I try to erase them they repeatedly come back.It will not let me complete many commands before taking over and clicking random selections.
**Things I have tried to remedy the problem include clear cache, data several times, install other roms(same problems with Cynagogen 7, syngergy and MIUI).
Powering off and powering back on.
Nothing seems to work and I would greatly appreciate it, as i am extremely close to unrooting and going back to the old fashion way.
What should I do?
Please help
Albert
Are you using the stock keyboard? or is this on a 3rd party keyboard?
Sounds like the touch screen is going bad to me. Does it also randomly open aps? Or is it just when you are typing?
wow! Incredible response time. I have tried several keyboards as well, stock, swift keyboard and the one that comes preloaded with cynagogen 7.
Are you having issues with response times any other times you touch the screen? Could be your digitizer going bad?

Curious, do you know how much a screen cost? Nothing else that can be done prior to this? excuse my ignorance.
I've seen anywhere between $11 and $28.

Actually, it sounds like a hardware problem. My wife's touchscreen android phone had a similar problem..it was hardware related

Go to unrevoked's site and download the s-on tool, then flash that in recovery. Then download the newest RUU available. You can download it in .exe form to run from your computer or as a zip to flash through the bootloader. If you decide to go the zip route, rename it to PC36IMG.zip (don't add a zip, it's already there) and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into the bootloader (vol down + power) and when it asks you to update select yes with the volume up button.
I wouldn't flash the s-on tool though, and would just run an RUU. If you used unrevoked or unrevoked forever during your root process then you'll keep s-off. They should still fix it as long as you're back to stock otherwise. That way if the tech gets the crazy idea to update your phone you can still get root back. If they replace it then maybe someone will get your s-off device
I had this issue, gave the bare screen a nice cleaning with an glass cleaning wipe and changed screen protectors and the issue never came back.
If you have a screen protector on, check this route first. If not, then digitizer it is.
I wouldn't unroot, just flash a stock, rooted ROM. I doubt they're going to look at your Hboot or anything. This way, if they get jumpy and update for you, you'll still be S-Off.
Okay, I have no idea what is wrong with this piece of ****. I'll go to where the issues started.
I got a brand new phone with insurance and flashed it over to Slimbean back in May, stayed on the same build with no issues, until about 2 weeks ago, when the issues started. The screen would stay off and I would have to pull the battery. It did this a lot.
Then out of nowhere, after a routine battery pull, it wouldn't come on at all. The blue light would just stay on when I tried to turn the phone on. The only way to get it to boot was to put the charger in then power it on.
I flashed back to EL29 and upgraded to stock GB27. The wakelock thing still happens. It randomly reboots. and now, the blue light of death thing is happening even when I plug the charger or usb in. I can't get it to respond at all. can someone help me? I figured flashing back to stock would help but apparently not...
EDIT: What is weird about the blue light thing is from what I've seen it is supposed to be a brick, but when it was happening before plugging a charger would fix it. Now it doesn't fix it.
edit 2: Just put it back on the charger, took the battery out, took it off the charger, and tried booting. It worked. I still need to know what is wrong so this stops happening, though.

If it's a factory defect, which you could easily argue, you shouldn't have to pay a deductible

Take it to a sprint store, have them test the issue, if no water damage and within a year of receiving the phone they should switch it out no deductible no hassle.
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
Also, try grabbing a logcat. It's possible there's a conflict with something causing the reboots and SOD. The blue brick light is odd though.

All phones replaced by isurance have a 1 year warranty from the time received through the isurance process. I have had 3 E4GT because of the power button and overheating issue and they will replace it if it's a factory defect. Just cause they replaced it doesn't mean you have to pay a deductible go to your nearest sprint repair center or call sprint and they should transfer you to the isurance department and they'll send you a replacement for your replacement. My last replacement took me 4 days to get here and it was during my power button issue which kept restarting my phone like every 5 minutes, so annoying.

This has happened twice to my phone, and both times, it turned out to be a battery issue. I take it sometimes when you plug charger in the battery charge icon doesn't show, but after popping it out and then back in it will show then boot? This is because your battery isn't completely blown, or even fat, rounded etc... But has a segment of bad cells. I'm sure when this happens your phone gets hot underneath the camera as well. I am dealing with this same issue, and awaiting a replacement battery yet again. Watch the phone discharge carefully. Mine discharges fine until about 80%, then does exactly what you are saying. After the battery pull and such, I get a boot. The battery by that time is around 62%. Works great until about 45%, then completely shuts off. If I boot back up, it says the battery is dead and I have about 3% to work with until I get a charger hooked up. I tried all the same stuff you are saying, and the battery replacement fixed it, for a while at least...
Edit: a side from the battery being crappy, I think I found the reason why it would do what it is doing. Mine did this yet again, even with new battery. Then I felt the spot that was heating up, and noticed it was extremely close to the micro SD card. Removed it and went through a full cycle without issue. Seems there is an issue reading my card, and was causing the phone to power off, and lock up, all the while tearing up my battery... Give it a shot, if you have an sd card in there, if not, I don't have any other suggestions besides take the phone back.

I have all possible options that can auto-control the screen brightness unchecked, and the mode set to Dynamic (even if it's on any other one too), and my brightness set at 45 (again this doesn't matter as I changed it to other brightnesses), but I still see the brightness auto-adjust from time to time. It doesn't matter what app I'm in, or just looking at the home screen. Does anyone else have this happen? Is there a way to make it stay where I have it set? It's not really annoying, but I do notice it, and would like it to stay put.
I had this happen on the S4 and note 3. Supposedly it's a Samsung thing. I did see this though

It's happening to me I made a thread on it too, I've called Sammy and done everything I could I think it's a software issue or one of the sensors is jacked up. In any event I gave it a few days and it's not getting any better it's very annoying to me so I'm returning my phone and getting another one just to make sure it's not a hardware issue. It's the only reason I haven't rooted yet

Listen to what i wrote i said im returning it to rule out hardware issues, if the new device does it then its definitely software and illl wait for some kind of an update or wait for a dev to get a handle on it. S4 from doing research had the same issues so yes most likely its software but i have to rule out hardware by returning it and getting a new device. My Note 2 did not do this so im assuming its a TW 4.3 issue
Ok...

Conclusion: It's not a phone defect.
I have done some testing, and concluded (at least for me) it is software/hardware combo as said previously (heating up). Since I have the phone set up exactly how I want it (rooted and all), and I really don't want to return it since the phone itself is perfect (no physical defects with buttons, screen, etc), I kept a really good watch on when it does it, and it only does it after I have the screen on for like an hour or so, and the phone itself gets warm/hot. If the temp stays below 95F the brightness stays constant. Only if it gets up in the 100s I start to see it, so I do believe it's auto-dimming to cool off the phone. I can live with that since it doesn't get that hot all the time. Mostly playing games, or heavy browsing on the web using desktop mode, and when it does do it the change is slight. I only really notice it on white screens. I was worried since I thought it was a defect, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm super happy with this beast. Best phone I ever owned.
On a related note I do remember my GSII doing it on TW. After I put CM on it I never saw it.

No lux is not the answer I tried that too. I just got my new phone after returning it and it does the same thing . As BobbyPhoenix stated I think it's software related too and it's when the phone gets warm and I think how much it adjusts is based on how hot it gets. I guess I'll have to live with it because I love this phone the screen when full blast puts all others to shame. Hopefully a dev will have a workaround soon

My wife's S3 does the same on Lux, maybe acts a little different but basically overall it's schizophrenic. It's possible it's goofier with Lux installed. Now there is another layer to manage.

I was using my phone this morning, then the screen turned off after I left it idle. Tried to turn it back on and got the Sprint logo and then the Samsung logo shortly after, and then it would turn off.
I tried power + home + vol-down, and shortly after that screen comes up it turns off again.
Do I just have a bad battery? I'm using the Gorilla Gadgets extended battery, but I'm at work and don't have access to my original. I also noticed that if I plug in the charger, the charging light doesn't come on.
Anything else I can try?
Oh wow, thanks for the speedy reply and for the heads up. I'll go ahead and give this a shot when I get home tonight

I don't doubt you at all, I just managed to confirm it. After slapping it around for a bit I finally got it to go to my home screen, then shortly after the "power off" menu came up, similar as to if I was holding down the power button and off it went.
I actually saw a video of someone flicking the power switch area with their fingers, I did that and managed to get the phone turned on, and have made sure to not touch the power button since then by installing a "screen off" app and it's been on this whole time. I'm guessing this is just a temporary fix and eventually it'll turn off again w/out me touching the power button?

When you're looking at the button which is obviously in the middle of the switch look at that Brown cardboard looking material... directly behind the button in that cardboard area use a very small flat head after you've used that needle or pin then dig out enough of it, so you can stick your screwdriver behind the button and it'll pop right out.

What you have is I'll guarantee 99.99% is a bad Power Button/Switch on your motherboard.
This was initially referred to as Sudden Death Syndrome... don't waste your money and buy a new battery, I assure you that's not it.
If you have a multi meter take your phone apart, it's very easy, there's a tear down video of how to on YouTube if you need a reference.

If anyone takes this advice PLEASE be sure to test with a multimeter to be sure this is the problem. I don't even know if the multimeter test will tell you anything (I'm no electrician) but this advice will permanently disable your phone. I was recently having a problem with my phone restarting and Jessooca guaranteed me that the problem was the power button.
The problem wasn't the power button. The problem was corrupt data/cache in one of my apps. Clearing the data/cache fixed the problem.
I just don't see how someone can make guarantees and be 99.909% sure of anything. Every problem can be caused multiple ways.
A few months ago I had a problem with my phone failing to startup and in that case it WAS the battery. So that's two different times I have personally experienced boot up/shutdown problems that were not related to the power button. It's just crazy to make guarantees and say you are 99.99% sure about anything without any troubleshooting. Especially for a problem like this that can have multiple causes.
I know I'm late on this thread, but just in case others come here looking for advice on how to fix their power button. I have fixed many of these by soldering on new buttons, and it's a pretty easy fix if you are good at soldering and have a good microscope. What's not an easy fix is trying to replace all those little tiny resistors and capacitors soldered on right next to the power button. They're about the size of a grain of sand, and although I usually can get them replaced and make the phone work, it takes much longer, so be careful if you're going to attempt any kind of diy repair!
I would also say that the only way I've personally gotten these power buttons to work other than replacing them is by cleaning them and lubricating them. A good electronic contact cleaner/lubricant works best, but acetone followed by WD40 works pretty well. Just saturate them with the cleaner and click them a bunch of times to work the cleaner in... then do the same thing with the lubricant. Doesn't always work, but it's unlikely to make the problem worse, and if you it doesn't work you can send it to me to fix!

Hello there!
So I purchased a second hand Note 5, the global version, a week ago, and its been amazing so far!
However, I do notice that sometimes when I press the power button it registers twice, so if I press to lock the phone, the screen will turn off and then back on after a split second.
Now, is there any way to fix this? Since Xiaomi aren't very big here in Sweden I haven't been able to find any kind of support email, and honestly if I dont have to I dont want to send it in, I dont even know if that is possible due to not being first owner.
So really the ideal thing would be to try and fix it myself. Question I have there is, would swapping out the powerbutton flex cable fix this? Now, from what I've seen, it looks like a pretty straightforward thing to do, and I have poked around in phones before, so that would probably not be an issue.
Any kind of help on this is very appriciated!
I'm not an hardware repairer. So to avoid the button, I would use the software way to shut off the screen.

That's a good suggestion actually. However, I do very much like my power button, so I would like to get it fixed. xD
Yes, I understand. That is why I avoid a maximum to use the buttons, because they often are one of the weakest part of a smartphone. I use gestures most of the time and for screen light and volume my favorite app is VolumeSlider. Good luck for your fix.

Little update: I popped the back off the phone (which was a nightmare without a good prying tool btw), and I didn't have any issues with the power button. That does not say much tho, since its very random, and does not appear when I want it to...

Hmm, you say you're the 2nd owner, right? Then the power button can be somewhat worn down from the high usage of the previous owner. I may be mistaken, you should try to restore phone to factory settings or flash the rom again. If it won't help, then just buy power button, it's pretty cheap and replace it. It isn't very hard to do.

Yeah, it could be wear of course, didnt actually think of that lmao, i just read about there being a bug with some of the early batches. Anyhow, since im unlocking it when the timer has gone out in 50 hours (yay), then I can see if its the fault of the rom, which I really doubt honestly, since its so random. And if it gets unbearable ill order the button PCB on eBay and swap it out.
I got the same problem, i don't know what's the cause and how to fix it, but is very annoying.
At first time, this problem didn't happen. After some months. It started. By using with the official case occurs more often than using without it.
It is not a hardware issue. It comes from kernel. Power denounce time is too low. I think all custom kernels have included a fix for it which just an increase of this time.
I Think It's Hardware Issue
I'm Facing the same problem
I use double press to turn on torch with power button it flashing when I locked my device
I think its a hardware problem
My device is Global version

This is interesting, to me it would seem strange if it was a kernel issue, since its a very random and unpredictable behavior. In my mind, if it was an issue with the kernel, wouldn't it happen every time I pressed the power button?

I guess that the button doesn't behave exactly the same every time. Sometimes it may respond quick enough and sometimes maybe not. Have in mind that it is a matter of milliseconds.

That could make sense, do you know any kernel that fixes this?

I think that every kernel has fixed it. Icecold, purecoffee, agni for sure. And others too. I suggest icecold. It's the best for me!

Huh, thats nice! I'm still waiting for the bl unlock countdown, when its done i'll flash one of those and test!
That's weird, my Note 5 Power Button behaves like it should, without any so called "fix" I'm still having locked bootloader and I'm on the latest Global Beta 9.4.18 with Android Pie.

Yeah. It could either be different batches maybe, or as im leaning towards, hardware related...
I have the same problem It's annoying !
Have the same problem too. Global version, all stock.
