Nexus 5X Rear Camera Black Dot Problem - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought my Nexus 5X in December, and i was using it with the stock software from Google (locked BL, unmodified, unrooted)(6.0.1 MMP29Q) because i didn't have USB C-A cable and everything was fine.
2 Days ago, i got the cable, and i unlocked the bootloader, rooted the device, and flashed a custom rom (namely Cataclysm)(6.0.1 MMP29P), and everything was still fine, but today, i was shooting some pictures with the camera, and i noticed a black dot in the view, i thought it's dust on the lens, and i tried wiping the lens (from the outside) but it didn't work.
I did some research on the issue, and i found out that many Nexus device users have faced the same problem with previous devices (Nexus 4, Nexus 5), and most feedback says that the problem appeared after updating the camera app, or updating the android version, but there's no actual solution to the issue, since most of the users chose to get a replacement phone.
Demo of the problem:

I posted the images in full size to notice that the dot isn't completely black, it's kinda transparent, on the blue wall, you notice that you can still see the pattern of the paint through the dot.
Things i tried
Wiping the lens from the outside
Uninstalling the camera app updates
Changing the resolution of the camera
Installing another camera app (Open Camera)
Unrooting/Flashing Stock Factory Image
Also, when i zoom in the dot goes out of the screen, it moves with the zoom.
Anyone has any idea what could be done apart from sending the phone back to the retailer? because my phone will have to cross countries to get there and come back :|

Probably there is something that stick to the inner sideof lens?

Thanks mate, but i'm keeping that as a last resort (as mentioned in the post, the phone will have to cross countries to be replaced, and that will take a lot of time).
I still have hope in finding a solution, or for a miracle to happen and the dot to disappear suddenly just like it appeared.
and i still have till next December for the warranty to end, so i'll hope a little longer for now

If all else fails you could try to find just the camera flex cable, probably has more attached to it, and either replace it yourself or have someone do that for ya. They aren't too hard to replace but haven't opened this phone up yet.

I had the same thing happen to my N4. Although I couldn't see it, there was some kind of speck on the camera lens. I never did anything about it because it was outside of warranty, and I didn't want to open the phone up.
I returned my first 5x for the same reason, although I couldn't see it on the picture yet. This time, I could physically see the speck of dust just outside of the range of the lens. I didn't want to risk it migrating into view just after the warranty expires.
Most likely, it's coincidence that it happened at the time that you flashed a ROM. If you want to be 100% sure, go back to stock to see if it's still there. The issue that you were referring to that happened to others was more of a black bar, which happened to my N4 if I used the most updated camera app.

Bright White Screen of Death?

My new replacement Dash, less than a month old, has a blank white screen. (See attached) The phone otherwise works perfectly, and is fully functional when the screen is echoed to the desktop with My Mobiler. (also attached).
I have been running Kavana's 80314 overclocked happily for 5 or 6 days now, and everything was functional, fast and stable. After just using it for a call, I pulled it back out of my pocket and found the screeen blanked-for-good. Any ideas?

Have you tried reflashing it ? This was an issue with an older Kavana ROM.
No, but I will. Back in a minute or two.
I have re-flashed with 80314, 80318, and the Kavana/Ricky; no easy task with no screen! Problem continues consistently.
so: the screen stays white through
soft reset
hard reset
sprite restore
attempts at entering bootloader mode
entire process of ROM flash.
Anyone have more ideas, or links to other threads on a fix?
If a ROM flash is going to cause bricking days after the fact, I can't recommend it, to say the least.
However, I may have an insight into the common 270 error. Anytime I allowed autolock.exe to lock the keys, the ROMs would appear to be corrupted. Will post on that thread.

Be thankful your phone isn't injured like mine. After flashing to Kavana's latest ROM, installing my programs, receiving my 8GB SDHC card, and watching a few movies stored on that card, I dropped my phone (on a soft carpet) and screwed up the LCD. You would think that after surving 10 or so concrete and hard surface hits, that carpet would be no opponent. I guess I should edit my signature.
Maybe now I have an excuse to get the AT&T Tilt.......

Wanna sell me the card?
Ebay look for a screen...or sell the phone for parts
Sorry Mikey but the Tilt has a MicroSD slot I am still debating whether to part it out or replace the screen and use it as a backup phone. I sure would miss it. Thanks to this community I have come to love my Dash!

Unfortunately, if that is the problem, I still can't get it to stop. I've tried turning the JOGGR back on (which I normally have off), and fiddling with the lowlight options, as well as experimenting with the tasks and processes in Celetask. No luck there, either. Still white.
I am afraid to replace the unit and have the same thing happen again if I go with WM 6.1
So far, I'm limited to sticking my SIM in a beater T722i a friend loaned me. It hurts, oh, it hurts!
Wrap Up
T-Mobile has decided that the sim died, and took my phone with it, so they replaced both no charge (except shipping). Who am I to argue with that?

Did you check to make sure that the connectors are all correct, try to reopen it and check it out... if ask for an exchange from the ebay seller. I believe that there is a policy and especially if you paid with paypal try going through there and say the item is defective.

Are they in the same place in every photo you take?
If so it looks like you may have some kind of contaminates on your lens / sensor.
I'd send it back to HTC and they should fix or replace it for you.
If it was a DSLR you could use a Rocket Blower to try and shift them but I don't think it would do much good on the tiny DHD camera

Usualy dust on the lenses appear as bigger blurred spots. Those sharp edges on the black spots should mean that there is something wrong with the sensor (dust or a faulty sensor). The fact that they appeared at a later stage is truobleing - it could mean that the sensor is not sealed properly. Have you tried to take a picture at a bright light souse (a lamp for example) to see if they are still visible. If they are that should mean sensor failure. Are they visible while taking the shot or while shooting a video?
Anyway, you should take it for repair, they have to do something for that, but if you are rooted, S-OFF and/or have installed custom ROM, be sure to return your phone to stock condition, because they will void your waranty if they see you have done these things to your DHD.

I've searched all the burn in threads and don't see anything like this. I use my phone as an alarm clock on a dock; a couple of days ago I noticed what looked like little yellow squares on white pages. It was driving me nuts so I took a screenshot and nothing was there; I used another phone and took a picture to email to myself. When I enlarge it I can clearly see it is clock numbers. The phone is still under warranty and I opened a ticket for repair but can't get a clear answer from the service personal; does anyone know if this is covered under warranty?

I use the genuine Google dock and the Alarm clock moves around the screen thus avoiding the burn in you have, just a thought in case they replace your phone and you dont want it to happen again

Unfortunately not. This will not go away usually. The image is "burned in". The technical term for it is "Image Persistence".
Just Google for a 10h white YouTube video and run it for awhile, it should be fine then. No need to send it in..

I guess I have nothing to lose so I plugged it in and turned it on. Fingers crossed and thank you!

Wouldn't youtube be fullscreen too since it's a video?
That has got to be the most severe case of burn-in I've seen yet. I'm curious as to the results of the 10h white video. Be sure to report back!

[Q] Poor Front-Facing Video Quality

What's up everybody?, I have searched around these forums and haven't seen a question similar to this, so.
I've recently noticed that the video quality from my front-facing is less sharp, has poor saturation, and has issues with lighting when compared to other Note 2's (especially my brother's; same service except he has the white model and I have the titanium). I never really played with it before so I don't know if it has always been this way. Before I post pictures and record some videos to compare I thought it would be smart to bring up the fact that I have rooted this device multiple times and installed 2 custom roms. As of right now I am running stock MC2, though. I have done several factory resets on MC2 already and tried THIS mod yesterday. I want to make sure it isn't a software issue before I attempt to send it in. I want to avoid receiving a refurbished or it being returned with another issue as much as possible.
My first question would be: Could flashing and rooting affect the way a front-facing camera performs?
My second question if it isn't software: What would be the best way to fix this? Or, should I just sell the device as is and get an S4?
BTW: I purchased the device brand new from Amazon, supposedly. When I first opened it it had a white charging cable and white AC adapter, which I don't think is standard. They've told me they can't do anything since it's past the 30 day return period. The functionality of this is important because I want to start posting vlogs on the interwebs.
Thanks in advance! I'd be happy to go into more detail if needed.

This phone does come with both, a white charging cable and a white AC adapter. I've flashed my phone for a total of 34 times (yes, I'm keeping track) and I don't seem to notice any problem with my front facing camera. It may just be the device itself..
It may just be your particular device. Your best bet would be to either go to sprint and see if they can do anything for you or just sell it and buy the S4.
Have you tried adjusting the settings in the camera app? Are you using a screen protector? Have you dropped the device, even with a case on?

Suddenly my camera has gone crazy

It was fine a day ago, nor do I remember it falling this bad.
It has suddenly just gone broke, the rear camera. It's upside down and is blurry. It only supports 2.1MP
The fronts fine, and the rear won't also work with any app except camera apps.
My flashlight is also gone.
I always have a cover on and I don't drop my phone. Maybe it did from 10cms but that doesn't count, I guess.
Tried reflashing rom however no good.
Please help, thankyou.

What?
"Tried reflashing rom however no good." quoted from your earlier post.
The way you worded it in that post was that after re-flashing the ROM, it didn't fix your issue.
As @lucyr03 said above, it's probably a hardware issue. It doesn't sound like a software problem, so flashing a ROM wouldn't fix it.
You could try running an RUU (which will wipe everything from your phone and set it up like fresh out of the box), but I really doubt that would help.
Having a hardware issue means that you need parts replaced. Send it for repairs or buy a new phone.

Meant flash light lol sorry
Anyway guess will have to get it repaired...
I recently replaced the Micro USB module on my HTC One M8 and in the process broke the pin that connects the GPS module to the antenna integrated into the rear cover. I managed to 'bodge' a fix for this with a bit of tinfoil to make the connection between the two that I no longer had due to the pin breaking. I noticed earlier that my rear camera and flash was behaving the same as yours and I can only assume I have damaged something in the removal/replacement of the rear cover.
I saw a post from another M8 owner saying they had the same behaviour you describe but when the cover was removed the camera and flash worked normally. They said it was a short somewhere on the camera module to the rear case. They put some non-conductive material between the camera module and the rear case and it fixed the issue.
I am going to take it apart (again...) tomorrow and see if I get the same behaviour and see if I can fix it.
Andy
EDIT: Just taken the back off again and the camera behaves the same - i.e. not working properly and I can't see anyting obvious as to what the issue could be. Probably a hardware issue.
I am using the stock OpenGapps so have Google Camera replaces the default Lineage camera and in the settings for this it doesn't even give options for the rear camera.
I have put it back together - looks like its time to order a new phone
