Note 8 Freezing - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

I have a Verizon Note 8 and i love it, but I am having a lot of instances where the device freezes and becomes unresponsive. I have had several instances where the phone freezes while on bluetooth, while playing a game (hearthstone), and also while just browsing the web. The phone freezes and I have to do a forced reset (hold volume down and power off) to get the phone to restart. I have factory reset the device once and I am still having this issue. Do I have a hardware issue? Anyone else have this problem? Coming from a Pixel XL where I was used to incomplete software this kind of surprises me from Samsung.
Thanks

I've heard of others, not seen myself

We purchased 2 note 8s and my wifes would freeze and reset 2-3 times a day, i tried factory reset and not installing any apps and it would still happen. I exchanged it last thursday and so far it hasn't happened again so i would say its a hardware problem

Thanks for the feedback. I did a factory reset last night and hadn't loaded any apps to the phone. I've had 4 lock ups today. I guess I'll be calling Verizon and eating the cost of a screen protector.

only time I've experienced it was on Facebook

Same freezups with crappy verizon support
Me and my frirend both bought the note 8 the day they were put up for preorder. I've had some issues with lag at times when a lot of tabs are open in chrome but about 3 weeks ago mine also froze. Totally unresponsive and power button reset wouldnt work.
Didnt think much about it until she had the same issue today.
We took them into the store where we bought them and were greeted with some snotnosed kid trying to explain how all phones do this and how he builds pc's and has the same issues.
Not a help at all and he made it seem like i didnt know anything.
I told my friend to just keep a close eye on it and hope they have a patch to fix it. If we still have issues b4 the warranty we'll raise more of a stink. But that guy was an .ass

That answer from the Verizon rep is BS. Close all the chrome tabs. Turn phone off. Hold down Power, Vol Up & Bixby buttons. When it goes into recovery mode, use the volume keys to select the option BELOW the selection to reset the phone DONT RESET!). Once you've highlighted the one you want, press the power key to select that option. This will clear the Davlik cache. Use the volume keys to select the option to Yes, to clear the cache, then press the power button. Then the menu that appears next will have "reboot phone" as the first option. Press the power button to do that.
When the phone reboots, go into settings and look at storage. You should have at least 5GB free. If not, delete videos and other large files until you do. Buy a 256GB MicroSD card and put all photos/videos/music on that.
Go into settings again and go down to the OS build version. I think that's the right one. Tap on it bunch of times. Then you will now have a developer option on the phone. Go into animation settings under there and make all the window and menu animations 0. Your phone should now FLY like never before.
Enjoy!

Turning the 3 animations off in the developer options seems to have fixed the issue with the device freezing.
I turned off: Window animation scale, transition animation scale, and animator duration scale and now my device is working very quickly without freezing. I have only been running this way for 20 hours or so so I will keep monitoring but I highly recommend others try this if they are experiencing freezing issues.
Also, if your device does become unresponsive, you can hold the power button and volume down button to force a restart.

I'd love to know how the phone is doing so far with the animations turned off. Was that the magic fix? Currently, I'm in a chat support with Samsung about my Note 8 freezing! It froze around 1am, so my alarm didn't go off!
I didn't know this was such a widespread issue! Thanks for the update!

I have had very few freezes since I have turned these animations off. I have since received an update for the phone and I am running freeze free. Hope you get your issue resolved..

Just since last week I have had my phone freeze up and restart itself...freeze up and I have had to restart it...and also just restart itself from sitting in my pocket, on the desk, on the table, etc. I have contacted Verizon and they are shipping me a replacement. I did a factory reset and it did not work. I also reset my cache and I'm still having the same issue. The phone is fully stock and has the December security patch installed as well. Maybe something will be figured out. I can definitely say it had not happened at all prior to the December patch, but I can't say for sure if the patch is the issue.

Oh my this is my MAIN gripe about my Note S8.... I sent it back pretty quick after I missed alarms many times due to freezing up in the night. Whether I was charging it, or not, and it always had plenty of battery either way. Had to hard reset. Even happens after surfing the web, or it just sitting around. Very frustrated. The first time I sent it back they changed out the LCD, didn't work, still kept freezing. The 2nd time Samsung supposedly changed out the motherboard, still kept freezing on me. 3rd time of sending it in they told me they still could not duplicate the issue and to just add apps back 1 at a time. OMG how time consuming. I have been asking from the get go for a replacement phone. Can't believe I spent $1000 on a phone and I have to troubleshoot it myself. I miss my previous Notes! I get it back today and am not looking forward to the disappointment of it freezing up again. How are you doing with your phone? Did anything help? Thank you

Just got my gsm nexus and I like it but.....

Last night I updated to the latest ics update so I'm on 4.0.4. I've noticed it shuts off by itself occasionally. Even now at work, phone is laying flat and it shut off once. Also this morning driving to work phone was on my dash and it shut off. Both times phone was in sleep mode and I didn't know it shut off completely until I tried to turn screen on with volume keys or power button. I would then of course have to hold down power button to start phone up again. I haven't rooted or anything , I'm stock. I've tried tapping the back by the battery to see if something was loose but nothing happened.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced the same. Will this go away when I start rooting and romming ,or do I have defective hardware?
So no-one? So far I looked online and someone mentioned putting paper under battery to hold it tighter against contacts? I'm trying that but not sure if it's making battery hotter. I'll see if that works.
Also called Google just in case I have to go through the returning process which I hope not to go through this is what they emailed me for my issue.
" Greetings and salutations,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today. Many issues can be resolved by performing a hard reset by removing the battery or by factory data resetting your device, but first I'd like you to try removing the battery, wiping it clean with lint free cloth, as well as the prongs that connect to the battery itself. Try this a few times, if it does not work this should. Be sure to backup any personal files you may have on the device.
To factory data reset your device, touch the Settings icon from your ‘Home’ or ‘All Apps’ screen, then select ‘Backup & reset’ under ‘Personal.’
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device 2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode 3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option 4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode 5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button. 6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset. 7. Select Yes -- delete all user data. 8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.

I better root and try a Rom asap huh?
I'd say get a replacement for it while you still can.
yeah getting a replacement could be the wisest thing to do
altho if when you received it in 4.0.1 it wasnt randomly shutting then something might've gone wrong with the update so you can unlock your bootloader and flash some ROMs to see how that goes
I definitely want to try some roms before I replace it as I have some time under Samsung's waranty. I also want to gently pull the contacts out a bit with small pliers to see if it holds the battery better. I'll even clean the contacts.
Man I'm hoping it's software ...

Gently pull the contacts out? Wouldn't that void your warranty? I'd be careful with the hardware if I were you.
Unless your battery contacts on the phone are smashed/deformed, it is unlikely that the battery connection is being physical broken at the contacts. The battery fits fairly snug in the compartment and the contacts stay touching even when the battery is partially removed. Probably no benefit to placing a piece of paper in there. Also keep in mind your NFC is in the battery.
I am also using a "Yakju" device from Google Play. No similar issue on 4.0.4 stock or CM9. At least not this nightly build : )
I actually got the GSM nexus yesterday and I had the exact same problem. The phone powered itself off twice. Once right after I turned it on and again about two hours later. Both times it occurred when I was moving around with the phone.
I pulled the battery and popped it back in a few times and it hasn't happened since.

You guys are probably right. The battery does already feel snug in there.
As I'm reading through forums for my issue, I can't believe how many sgn users are experiencing the same thing I am, some even reboots. Alot of them think it's apps. Good chance I'll exchange for the another device with same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is why Google dropped the price.
Can't wait to get home and mess with this more. Hopefully I can make it go away.
I had this same problem when I first got mine with random reboots an powering off by itself, after about 2 weeks the problem went away, don't ask me how it seem to magically go away by itself maybe because battery needed time to settle in with the charging process.

I'm happy to report, knock on wood, that after I factory reset the phone the problem seems to have gone away. Last night I used the toolkit to unlock bootloader and root, and I flashed cm9 nightly and all is good so far. My only problem now is I dont know which rom to try next
I definitely want something with led customizations like cm9 has, thats just so old school reminds me of a blackberry .
Any suggestions, I guess I can also ask elsewhere.

I use light flow. It also lets me customize both LED and audio notification per app

I had light flow going when my phone would shut itself off. It doesnt include alot of the apps I use to customize so I'm not the biggest fan of it now. I think the cm9 led customizations is sufficient as it lets you add any of your apps regardless.
Aokp has more features and is most popular so you could try that. Then try paradigm rom. I done use light flow, I just have a few led colors from stock and its enough for me for now. Google voice green, handcent texts blue, and Gmail and calls white. All from the stock apps.
Black ice is good so far. So many different variations of aokp roms I guess, its hard to recommend the "best" one.

[Q] Recent app screen keeps coming up?

Hey guys! I recently updated my phone to 4.1.2 and noticed almost every time I go to use my phone and hit either the power button or the home button the recent app screen pops up instantly as if you were to hold the home button down. So far I tried a soft reset a factory reset with no luck. The phone worked perfectly before the update so I know it isn't either of the buttons sticking. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate your help, I'm at the point where I'm pulling my hair out haha
Thanks!!
Did you do the OTA (over the air) update Sprint pushed out, are you on a custom rom, or are you using a non stock launcher? Give us some details and someone, if not me, will help you out.
Also try rebooting. Some users in the past have reported that trying to activate recent apps properly (by holding the home) stopped working and a simply powering the device off then turning it back on fixed the issue. This may solve your issue too.
I see this is your first post, are you familiar with rooting and custom roms? Just curious so we know how to get you through this.
Thanks for helping. I did the ota update that sprint pushed out. The phone is completely stock nothing on it is modified at all. I already tried rebooting multiple times and tried a battery pull also. I am new to rooting and custom roms. Everything else on the phone is working fine but the recent app screen will come up as soon as I turn the screen on. It wont come up if I turn the screen on hit home to go to home screen turn screen off using power button and turn the screen back on quickly, it has to sit for 30sec to 1min for it to start doing it again.
Thanks!!

Anybody got any ideas?
Sorry for the late reply, I work a night shift.
Are you waking the screen up with the home button or the power button. The reason I am asking is because the only way I can make this same situation occur is with no lock screen set, I wake up the phone with the home screen button.
Try setting up a lock screen and see if it fixes the problem.
If it does not fix the problem then I recomend taking the phone back to Sprint to see if they will swap the device since you are not rooted.
If you have a custom recovery installed try rebooting into recovery and wiping cache and dalvik cache then go to advanced and fix permissions, if you only have stock recovery try wiping cache from it. To boot to recovery, power off phone, hold volume up and home then power, let go of the 3 keys when the note 2 splash screen pops up. If that doesn't alleviate the issue it may be a setting with the home key presses, for instance you can change what it does with longpress and double tap, may have gotten the svoice and recent apps mixed up. Try double tapping home and see if svoice comes up or recent apps, also longpress to see which comes up.

This is deff recent update caused i believe. I also have a non rooted sprint device that I just updated, and its doing the exact same thing. Annoying as hell. My device is less then a month old. To explain more on what happens, I have my screen timeout set for 2 mins, lock at 5 mins. Use phone, put it down, wait for screen to time out, pick it up and hit him key once and it brings up the task manager. Not a long press, just a fast press.
I tried to clear the cache with no luck..
I guess that makes two of us for this problem.
I have noticed sometimes when I go to use the phone there will be a blue box around one of the apps. Not sure if its the last app I used but it has been doing this since before the update.
I cant replicate the issue to save my life. When you guys updated something must have gotten confused in the process. May need to download a stock restore of ma7 and start fresh. That would be what I would do if nothing else fixes it. It will erase all you apps and settings and internal storage so back em up. Back up internal to PC
I like to break stuff!
Ok ill be more than happy to try that.. what exactly is ma7 and where can I dl it. Is there anything special I need to know or do to complete the process? I already cleared my my contacts.. google said they were uploaded but apparently not.
Thanks again for the help!!

MA7 is the latest OTA 4.1.2 which would be the update you took prior to this recent apps incident. Look in development for a thread by garwynn it'll have the links to the Odin one-click packages and since you already took OTA you won't need the modem. Just follow the directions in his thread. Before doing it if you have anything stored to your internal storage you want to save back it up to your PC via USB. You'll want to grab the full restore one click so it wipes everything and starts fresh.

Same issue, called Sprint
I spoke with sprint about this today, very frustrating. I learned:
Not all note users are having this problem
they did a reactivation, prl update, firmware check, profile (?) update.
That didn't do anything, so the recommended a hard reset, that's when I flipped out.
They said I may be able to sent me a new phone if the hard reset doesn't help, but would need to pay a $49 exchange fee... then i flipped out more.
possible reasons: I really don't know, here is what i have:
Go Launcher
SD card, inserted a couple weeks after activation
I use Home2 to modify my home button double tap action
Not rooted or anything.

I'm still having the same issue with recent apps popping up upon awake, non rooted sprint, happened after recent OTA update, and have no apps in common with above poster. I have not done a reset yet as it hasn't bothered to that extent yet, and once I get ready to root and really tear into things, ill work it out then I suppose.
I'm having the same issue after updating to MA7. Im rooted, cleared both caches and still going on. When I wake the phone with the home button it wakes up and shows the recent apps, when I close that it take me to my lock screen (wigetlocker)
Edit: Fixing permissions just fixed it for me and also clearing the caches again.
Double Edit: Started doing it again. -___-

[Q] Any way to disable the power button?

Hey guys,
So I've got an S3 running AOKP at the moment and I was wondering if there was any way to disable the power button. It's been malfunctioning, and causing my phone to reboot constantly. Sometimes even when off it continues to think I'm holding down the power button and cancels the boot process...
Any ideas of a workaround? I'm out of warranty and can't want to pay for repairs at the moment.

Hi,
I am having the exact same issue. Very strange as it decided to do this while checking my email (finger no where near the power button) and I have never had any issues prior to this.
I'm running CWM, CM10.2 and I CANNOT BOOT into recovery (CWM) or ODIN, best I got was the CM loader screen then it reboots.
Even if I disconnect the battery, wait 30 minutes (fully charged) and replace the battery, it attempts to boot itself again. and again and again...
The best videos I've seen involve smacking the phone on the power button side (not going to do that, at least hard) I think it may be a random power button failure. I will be disassembling the phone tonight and trying to open or close the power button contacts and wipe my phone before it goes back....

It's very random for me too. Sometimes it'll work all day then it'll take like an hour and a half to turn back on.
Quick question, as I've heard this from a couple people. Do you use an otter box?
Regardless I'm 90% sure this is hardware related and has nothign to do with software, because all the cases I've heard of this have had different roms, one of which was stock unrooted.
Pretty frustrating. Not sure I'll buy a Samsung again to be honest.

This started gradually happening to me too and I bought both my phone and Otterbox in July 2012 when it came out. I noticed with my family members' S3's that their Otterboxes were different in regards to the power button (it stuck out more) whereas mine hardly stuck out at all. I got a warranty replacement this past July (2013) and the exact issues you described began happening. It started out as random reboots and as of yesterday, I can't get my phone to boot because it thinks I'm holding the power button down (therefore not letting the boot process finish). I took my phone apart, expecting the power button to be an easy swap like it was in the GS2, but no, it's a part of the friggin motherboard. I also am looking for a way to disable the power button. I'd recommend that if you are able to get it to boot even once, that you make sure to backup all your stuff. Fortunately all my pics are backed up since I can't boot my phone anymore, but other files are currently inaccessible. I wonder if anyone knows if some sort of electrical tape or something could prevent the power button signal from transferring so that we would be able to boot our phones?
I had the same power button issue with my Captivate as well... and thought that issue had been looked into. After 14 months of use on my S3, I noticed this issue appeared.
Solution (well not quite): change key layout to disable power button. Re-map volume down as "power, wake". Yes, by doing this, I am losing volume down button. Also, when the phone is off, I still need to press the power button to power it up. My fix of changing the key layout file won't take charge until after the phone boots up.

[Q] Help - Glide crashes and restarts

I bought a Samsung Glide i927 phone last month in the US, i bought it unlocked as i am from argentine, and i wanted to use it with movistar.
Recently the phone started to crash a lot, by that i mean that the screen starts going white, with horizontal lines and pixels of different colors appearing, then just turn off or restarts itself, only to crash again as soon as it starts an then turns off.
When this happens i try to start the phone and select the shut down option myself to see if the next time it starts it doesnt crash. But sooner or later it happens again.
This problem its happening too often, and not while doing something in particular like running an app or something. Sometimes it crashes just by plugging it to the power adapter, it even shows the white screen with the lines instead of the charging battery image when i charge it while turned off. I have already try to fix it upgrading android or doing a factory reset, but that didnt work.
Anyone have any idea of how to resolve the problem, or if its a hardware malfunction that cant be fixed?
To make things more difficult, as i said earlier im from argentine, and i cant go to AT&T or Samsung to get it fixed or get a replacement. English is not my first language, so please forgive my orthographic mistakes.
Thanks
This really sounds like some hardware problem, but to be safe, learn how to use Odin and use it to revert your phone to completely stock condition (cleaner than factory reset).

I tried to do that, but the first times when Odin try to reboot the phone it just freezes and i have to unplug it. After many tries it finally finished, but the phone keeps freezing and crashing.
The phone even crashes while turned of and conected to the power adapter.
Do you think that with LiteROM 0.9.0, that might fix this issues?
I've got reboots too, try to disable auto brighness

Power button issue
I am having a similar problem. At first, it just happened on rare occasions. However, today, it started doing it repeatedly. The phone was unusable. I did some checking around, and it appears that the power buttons on Samsung phones are prone to sticking. Some people suggest you actually remove the battery and slam the power button against a table. I wasn't going to do that, because I could just see it doing even more damage. What I did instead was firmly tap the power button repeatedly. It seemed to unstick the power button and allow the phone to function again.
Another alternative is to have the power button replaced, but that might be a hassle.
First of all, sorry for my bad english.
I bought it on amazon a few days ago, I have the same problem...
I thing aznemesis is right, because my power buttom is very sensitive, in fact, some times, when I press the button smooth and fast, to turn off the display like, the typical menu appears as if I had pressed the button for much longer period. Which proves your theory. The problem is if I hit the button over a table and the button breaks here in Chile do not exist spares of the terminal
Well, I did. I couldn't stand the desire to do so. After nearly 18 hours, the terminal isn't rebooted again.

Thanks

The horizontal lines on the screen sound as if it is an overheating issue. What were you doing before your phone shut off? Are you using the factory charger?
cure found
take the battery out...blow on the power button with some compressed gas to get the dust out....then pour a drop of silicone based lubricant on the power button so that most of it gets in the gaps...then hit the power button a few times....haven't had any reboots since then

[q] screen is glitchy after dropping!

Two days ago, my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 dropped out of my coat pocket as i was running for the bus. I picked it up and saw the screen was cracked along the top left and bottom left hand side. Everything was working for the past two days and i figured i'll just wait till Christmas to get a new phone. This morning i took my phone off the charger and turned it on. The Samsung logo flashed, and then the boot animation for Slimrom (the custom rom i'm currently running on) flashed for about a second but then the screen went black. I did a battery pull but the weird thing is whenever i put my battery back in, even without touching the power button, it boots up by itself but then the screen goes black again. I can access TWRP and download mode but they both go black after a few seconds as well. I was able to successfully turn on my phone and have it fully function for about 15 minutes after putting it back on the charger, but it quickly blacked out again. It also keeps randomly booting up by itself which is weird. Im guessing this is a problem with the screen itself, but could it be a software issue because the device keeps booting up by itself? If it is the screen, will i have to buy a new one or is it not worth it? I've also tried using a different battery and i have the same issue so it can't be that. Any help is appreciated!
Sounds like an issue with the power button, it probably got stuck somehow either when you dropped it, or after you dropped it. Do a simple search for power button and you will find ways to fix it!
Holy crap i didn't even think of that! It makes total sense since every time i even tap my power button, even for just a second, it turns on. I've read around that clearing the cache or a factory reset could work. Is this true?
Unlikely, unless it's a software issue but it's always a possibility. Slam the phone against something to try to get the power button back into place, or open it up and try to see if you can fix it yourself, or replace it
The problem seems to be gone. I haven't had any issues for two days now. All i did was press the power button really hard multiple times. Thanks for you help man!
